Review – Expobar Brewtus III Double Boiler Espresso Machine

A few months ago I had a chance to get my hands on the Brewtus III and I’m dying to share the experience with you. This was probably one of the biggest espresso machines I’ve used in terms of size, and therefore the name for this bad boy is very suitable – Brewtus III. It does sound powerful when you say it out loud. This line of espresso machine has been around since 2005, and so I’d heard the name here and there, so it was with some excitement when the Brewtus III-V espresso machine arrived at our café. After one of our old ones (not a Brewtus, but another good, sturdy model) finally gave out after a solid 8 year run, we found ourselves bidding on a used one – the Brewtus in question, and it so happened we won the auction. This is why we didn’t spend two or three thousand dollars like you would have to if you bought it new .

This is a large machine that weighs in at about 62 pounds, so if you are getting it, a little bit of help will be necessary to pull it out of its box. I’ve been advised to lay the box on its side and slide the machine out. Still, you should get another person to help you lift it and place it on your counter top, as this is not a one person job I don’t think.

The Brewtus III is made of stainless steel and with a snazzy E61 group head which is one of the main aesthetic perks of this machine, I think. It just looks great! Even though ours was used when we bought it, with a bit of polish it practically looked new and it is quite a sight to see.

E61 Groups – The Key To Great Espresso

E61 Groups – The Key To Great Espresso

E61 groups, if you don’t know, are those one of the keys to great espresso for a few reasons, with the main one being due to controlling the temperature of things and offering super stable heat in such a way that you get the best possible results. Its a rather technical thing to explain, so here is a video on E61 groups to bring you up to speed on them.

This is a double boiler unit, but as far as double boiler units go it is relatively compact. Brewtus is 16.5″ high, 10.5″ in width and 17.5″ depth. The stainless steel exterior is made from a heavy gauge material, making it solid when lifting it up onto the counter. I guess I’ve just got its size on my mind since I almost threw my back out lifting it. I have to admit it was my fault, since I didn’t get someone to help me.

Brewtus III has a relatively small drip tray; and so you may find that to be a little con. The tray can be either plumbed in or emptied manually.

The machine came with solid feet with rubber pads so it is raised off of the counter; no worries whether it will heat the surface it is laid on.

Also, there’s no slipping when locking in the portafilter.

The Brewtus III is equipped with a no-burn steam arm as you can see on the left (meaning you can touch it and not get burned) and a hot water tap on the right.

The steam and water wands swivel excellent in all directions. Brewtus’ no-burn design is turned into a steaming wand that’s safe to touch, but also because the wand stays cool all the dirt doesn’t stick on it, which makes it super easy for cleaning.

Brewtus III is a double boiler, as mentioned – one boiler for steaming and one for brewing. Each boiler has a gauge to indicate the pressure, one for brew pressure and one for steam boiler pressure. The machine also comes with a backflushing disc, a portafilter, single and double baskets, a plastic tamper and a scoop. I honestly, don’t like the plastic tamper so long ago I upgraded to something better .

This is a machine with a rotary pump that needs to be plumbed in. It came with a long braided stainless hose that is well explained in the owner’s manual; you can learn how to attach it to water supply, just make sure you read the manual well. Our manual was a bit banged up from the unit being used (about a year old, we’re told), but we’re lucky it was included. Of course there’s always the internet for helping with such things as well. Spent a lot of time on YouTube looking things up, to be honest.

In my digging around for more info, I came across Crem International, the company responsible for Expobar and the Brewtus line of espresso makers. Here’s an article about them if you want to learn more.

Expobar Brewtus III-V has a water reservoir, so there’s no reason for worrying about plumbing. This model can be converted to direct connect. Its sub-degree brew temperature is managed by an electronic temperature control unit which is displayed by the three digit LED display on the front of the machine.

Give the machine about 5 minutes to adjust to a change in the brew temperature. The Expobar Brewtus III-V brew temperature control (PID) shows the desired brew temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit using one degree intervals. The PID is preprogrammed at the factory and usually doesn’t need any adjustment, unless you prefer Centigrade instead of Fahrenheit. In case you want to change the temperature scale this is what you should do:

Press and hold the UP & DOWN buttons while turning on the machine

When the displays shows F.03, release the buttons

DOWN selects the parameter you wish to modify; UP changes the selected parameter

The first of five parameters, F.03, changes from F to C. Press DOWN to select it and UP to change its value

The other four parameters are P, I, D, and F.04. “P” is the value of the proportional variable, “I” is the value of the Integral variable, “D” is the value of the Derivative variable, and “F.04″ is the correction factor or offset in degrees C between the actual boiler temperature and the display readout.

The water hookup is a standard NPT fitting that can be adapted to the plumbing fixture you have available under the sink or from the icemaker hookup.

You can plug this machine into a standard 15 amp circuit. If you’re buying the Brewtus new from WholeLatteLove , they will include a well-written owner’s manual with instructions, including the following steps:

Turn on the main power switch

Lift the lever to the right of the brew group; the pump should turn on and begin to fill the steam and brew boilers

Leave the lever up until water exits the brew group. Note: If the pump runs for more than a minute and no water comes out, turn off the machine. You can damage the heating element if it is left on too long without water

Wait a few minutes for the steam boiler to fill. The pump will automatically turn off when both boilers are full.

Brewtus needs some time to warm up, so usually it’s about 35 minutes. Remember to leave the empty portafilter in the brew group so that it will be hot and ready for use. Make sure you have the portafilter locked into the group head during the initial warm-up.

The fact that Brewtus III can serve you well at least for five years makes it one of those machines that make a good investment. In all this technical talk, I never mentioned the actual espresso that this machine produces. As many customers have remarked, it is some of the best they’ve ever had. The Brewtus here makes you realize that there is espresso and then there is espresso . As one espresso loving friend of mine says, if someone takes my Brewtus away from me, I’ll go and get another one. We give this machine 4 stars all the way!

Rebuilt Expobar Brewtus II

Rebuilt Machine Overview

Our rebuilt machines were entirely dismantled, cleaned and extensively rebuilt. The whole boiler assembly and all of the copper tubing was removed and thoroughly descaled. We then rebuilt the boiler, brew group, pump assembly and valves, cleaning, replacing and lubricating parts as necessary. Our entire process is described in detail below.

Total Tear Down and Rebuild Process:

Boiler & Piping Assembly: first we installed all NEW parts including a heating element, pressurestat, safety valve, vacuum relief valve, high limit switch, and boiler insulation.

Brew group: we then did a complete tear down, cleaning and lubrication of the brew group and installed all NEW brewing, infusion and discharge valves along with their seals, the upper and lower infusion valve springs, the shower screen, and group gasket.

Pump Assembly: the rebuilds all feature an all NEW pump, OPV & air remover, and style fitting with heavy duty teflon tubing.

Testing Phase:

When the machines were reassembled, we adjusted the steam pressure to 1 bar; and, with the backflush disc in, we set the brew pressure to 10 bars.

Post-reassembly, we thoroughly tested the machine’s steaming, brewing and pre-infusion performance, and made sure the sound level it produced was no louder than on a new machine.

When you Buy:

The rebuilt machines include the following accessories: a portafilter, single and double filter baskets, a backflush disc, tamper, coffee scoop, and a large particle filter.

Warranty:

Our rebuilt espresso machines are covered by a 1-year parts and labor warranty.

Machine Overview

Please Note: The Brewtus II is a redesign of the original Brewtus. Improving on the first model, the Brewtus II features a brewing pressure gauge in addition to the steam pressure gauge, a brewing pressure adjustment knob that is located behind the drip tray, and a no-burn steam wand.

From stability to adjustability, the Brewtus II’s temperature reliably stable even today. This is because we worked with Expobar to develop a list of features the machine had to have, including a double boiler system (both with auto refill) each with their own powerful heating elements, a red digital temperature control that’s right on the front of the machine for easy use, the iconic E61 brew group, a commercial caliber chrome-plated 58mm portafilter, and adjustable brewing pressure that can be monitored through the new pressure gauge. These features, combined with Expobar’s already exceedingly high standards and dedication to craftsmanship, result in a prosumer machine that performs exactly how our customers have requested.

Along those lines, the Brewtus II also has a super-sized 90-ounce removable reservoir – complete with low water sensor – so you never run dry or burn out the heating elements. It also has a large removable drip tray that can hold up to 64 ounces of liquid before it needs to be emptied. On the top of the machine is a stainless steel passive cup warmer, which is also removable for access to the reservoir and for cleaning. The Brewtus II also features a freewheeling stainless steel steam wand and a fully pivotal stainless steel hot water wand, each activated by their own dedicated hard black plastic star-shaped knobs. To top it all off, the Brewtus II’s brewing pressure can be adjusted using a knob that can be accessed by removing the drip tray.

The Brewtus II is also a handsome machine, with traditional styling, as is the case with the entire Expobar line. It is encased completely in polished stainless steel, and will make a striking impression on any countertop. It’s heavy too; in fact it’s a walloping 61 pounds. What else would you expect from a machine that’s got so much muscle packed onto it? It’s the perfect little powerhouse for any home or small office environment.

The Brewtus II includes a tamper, single shot filter basket, double shot filter basket, backflush disc and a 7 gram coffee scoop.

Please Note: Regulations for commercial use vary between states. Be aware of your local requirements. Machines carrying an NSF approval are labeled as such. Please visit our policies page for warranty information.

Housing and Build Quality

Housing Construction

The Expobar Brewtus II is shiny and sleek. Its traditional design is housed in polished heavy-duty stainless steel housing. The cup warmer, drip tray and drip tray cover are also stainless steel to match. And the chrome plated brass brew group blend perfectly with the rest of the machine. All this needs to be held up by a very strong frame, and the Brewtus II’s frame is just that. It is constructed of a heavy gauge stainless steel, which contributes to the machine’s hefty 61 pounds.

Brewing

Commercial Design Double Boiler System Construction

Each boiler is complete with a dedicated 975-watt heating unit, which makes it possible for them to run at their respective temperatures with precision. Two boilers means there’s no switching boiler temperatures as you go back and forth between steaming and brewing. Double boilers also make it possible to brew and steam at the same time, which is perfect if you’re making a few drinks at once. Because the boilers are so large and automatically draw water from the reservoir, you eliminate any wait time between shots.

Now, you would think all that power would put a drain on your electric system, but we’ve even taken that into consideration and designed the Brewtus II to work off a standard 15-amp household breaker.

E61 Commercial Brew Group

In keeping with the Brewtus II’s focus on unwavering temperature stability, this machine features the E61 brew group – the industry’s best. Made of solid chrome-plated brass, this entire assembly is revered worldwide for its ability to retain heat at an absolutely consistent temperature. Locking into the group head is a heavy chrome-plated brass 58mm portafilter, which hold the stainless steel filter baskets tamped with coffee. The Brewtus II comes with two filter baskets – a single shot and a double shot. You can also order a special filter basket that holds pods if you prefer to use pods to brew your espresso.

Completing the brew group is the 3-way valve which operates off a manual lever on the front of the Brewtus II. This allows you to control the initiation of the brewing process and the depressurization process yourself.

Digital Temperature Control

The Brewtus II features a digital temperature control that’s right on the front of the machine. You can make the brew boiler hotter or cooler if you prefer, simply by pressing the up or down arrows on the display. The temperature is adjustable in 1°C increments should you care to change it. This eliminates the need to temperature surf or guess at the proper temperature.

Heavy Duty Commercial Portafilter

The Brewtus II’s portafilter is commercially designed and made of chrome-plated brass, which is ideal for temperature stability throughout the critical end stages of the brewing process. It is a dual spout, 58mm portafilter that weighs in at a hefty 22 ounces, and comes with two filter baskets – a single shot and a double shot.

Progressive Coffee Infusion

The brewing system provides a smoother delivery of pressure than many machines in its class. This makes it possible to perform what is the equivalent to pre-infusion, which is a moistening of the grinds before the full force of water comes through them. This is important because it prevents the water from “channeling” through the grinds and therefore not getting the maximum flavor and aroma out of them.

Unique Lever Control w/ 3-Way Valve

There are only two controls on the Brewtus. The main power switch is located on the upper left and a big manual lever to the right operates the brewing process and 3-way valve. The main power switch is a lighted rocker switch – when the machine is turned on it glows red, and the boilers immediately start to heat up. When the pressure gauge reaches 1 bar of pressure, you are ready to brew. The only control you will need to operate is the lever that is located just to the right of the brew group.

Brewing Pressure Controller w/Pressure Gauge

The Brewtus II’s brewing pressure can be monitored using the corresponding pressure gauge on the front of the machine. The brewing pressure can also be adjusted using a knob that can be accessed by removing the drip tray.

Frothing and Hot Water

Steam Pressure Controller w/Pressure Gauge

The steam boiler temperature/pressure is controlled through a pressure controller. It senses the pressure in the boiler and turns on the heating element in the boiler as the pressure drops. You can visually see the boiler pressure through a pressure gauge on the front of the machine.

Hot Water Dispenser

The Expobar Brewtus II has a separate stainless steel hot water dispenser. Mounted on a ball joint, the dispenser swivels in all directions giving you easy access. Just turn the black knob above it and you’ll have all the hot water you’ll need for Americanos, tea or cocoa.

No Burn Steam Wand

The steam wand is also made of stainless steel and is mounted on a ball joint. While this is nice for access, it also makes it easy to use when you want to froth. Plus, the interior of the steam wand is lined with Teflon so you don’t burn your fingers when using it. The steam wand’s tip is a commercial one-hole model. This is great for steaming or frothing 8 ounces of milk at a time.

Water Reservoir

The 90 oz plastic reservoir is easily removed or refilled from the top of the Brewtus II. Tucked inside the machine to the left, simply lift the cup warmer to get to it.

Cleaning, Maintenance, and Other

Low Water Cut Off

The Brewtus II has a low water sensor mounted under the water reservoir. It operates similar to a scale. If it notices the reservoir feels too light, it will turn off all power to the boiler because that means the water level is too low.

Electronic Controls

The \”Electronic Boiler Refill Control” is the brain of the machine. It uses probes mounted inside the boiler and on the base plate below the reservoir to sense the water level. It uses this information to control the operation of the pump for refilling the boiler when necessary. It will also turn the boilers off for safety if the reservoir or boilers run out of water.

Cup Warmer

Warm your cups on the passive cup warmer that takes up the entire top of the machine. Because it’s warmed by the heat that’s given off from both boilers, it will keep all your cups extremely toasty. Some passive cup warmers have “cool spots” where the heat from the boilers can’t reach. But the Brewtus II’s double boiler system completely eliminates this. And the cup grate is made of stainless steel to conduct the heat evenly across the surface, adding to a uniform temperature. It is removable for easy cleaning or access to the reservoir.
