Panasonic GX85 vs Panasonic GH4 Detailed Comparison
Here we are comparing GX85 and GH4, two Mirrorless cameras by Panasonic. Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85 is a Advanced Mirrorless class camera and Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 is a Pro Mirrorless class camera.
Panasonic GX85 was introduced to market in April 2016 and Panasonic GH4 was launched in February 2014. As you can see, GH4 is 2 years older than GX85. Let’s see if this age difference between two cameras makes a big difference.
Here is a brief look at the main features of Panasonic GX85 and Panasonic GH4 before getting into our more detailed comparison.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 vs Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85: What is the difference?
1. weather-sealed (splashproof) ✔ Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 ✖ Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85 The device is protected with extra seals to prevent failures caused by dust, raindrops, and water splashes.
2. screen resolution 1036k dots 1040k dots A higher screen resolution provides a sharper image, making it easier to review your photos.
3. EVF resolution Unknown. Help us by suggesting a value. (Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4) Unknown. Help us by suggesting a value. (Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85) An electronic viewfinder (EVF) with a higher resolution provides a sharper image, producing a view comparable in quality with the one displayed on an optical viewfinder.
4. Has a built-in focus motor ✖ Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 ✖ Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85 The focus motor moves the lens in order to autofocus. For system cameras, having a focus motor in the camera’s body allows you to use a wide range of lenses, including lenses which do not have their own focus motor. For compact cameras, a focus motor is usually built-in.
5. Has a flip-out screen ✔ Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 ✔ Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85 Flip-out screens can be useful for tricky shots.
6. has an optical viewfinder ✖ Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 ✖ Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85 An optical viewfinder (or OVF) allows the photographer to compose a shot while seeing exactly what the lens will capture. OVFs have no time lag and require no power – as opposed to electronic viewfinders, which can drain battery life. OVFs are also better in low light situations.
7. Has an electronic viewfinder (EVF) ✔ Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 ✔ Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85 An electronic viewfinder (or EVF) is a small display which shows the framed image. Benefits of these over optical viewfinders include: they show more of the image; they can be more compact; it’s easier to focus with digital zoom; and they sometimes offer extra info on the display (such as a live histogram).
8. viewfinder coverage 100% 100% With 100% coverage, you can compose the image correctly when you capture the photo. With less than full coverage, you may have to crop your photos afterward to get them looking perfect.
Panasonic GH4 vs Panasonic GX85 Comparison Review
Panasonic GH4 vs GX85
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85 (labelled Panasonic GX80 in some countries) are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in February 2014 and April 2016. Both the GH4 and the GX85 are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are equipped with a Four Thirds sensor. The GH4 has a resolution of 15.9 megapixels, whereas the GX85 provides 15.8 MP.
Below is an overview of the main specs of the two cameras as a starting point for the comparison.

Going beyond this snapshot of core features and characteristics, what are the differences between the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85? Which one should you buy? Read on to find out how these two cameras compare with respect to their body size, their imaging sensors, their shooting features, their input-output connections, and their reception by expert reviewers.
Body comparison
An illustration of the physical size and weight of the Panasonic GH4 and the Panasonic GX85 is provided in the side-by-side display below. The two cameras are presented according to their relative size. Three consecutive perspectives from the front, the top, and the back are available. All size dimensions are rounded to the nearest millimeter.
The GX85 can be obtained in two different colors (black, silver), while the GH4 is only available in black.
If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic GX85 is considerably smaller (30 percent) than the Panasonic GH4. Moreover, the GX85 is markedly lighter (24 percent) than the GH4. It is worth mentioning in this context that the GH4 is splash and dust resistant, while the GX85 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. In this particular case, both cameras feature the same lens mount, so that they can use the same lenses. You can compare the optics available in the Micro Four Thirds Lens Catalog. Mirrorless cameras, such as the two under consideration, have the additional advantage of having a short flange to focal plane distance, which makes it possible to mount many lenses from other systems onto the camera via adapters.
Concerning battery life, the GH4 gets 500 shots out of its DMW-BLF19 battery, while the GX85 can take 290 images on a single charge of its DMW-BLG10 power pack. The power pack in the GX85 can be charged via the USB port, which can be very convenient when travelling.
The adjacent table lists the principal physical characteristics of the two cameras alongside a wider set of alternatives. If you would like to visualize and compare a different camera combination, you can navigate to the CAM-parator app and make your selection from a broad list of cameras there.
The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The GX85 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 47 percent) than the GH4, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Both cameras under consideration feature a Four Thirds sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as “crop factor”) of 2.0. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the medium-sized sensor cameras that aim to strike a balance between image quality and portability. Both cameras feature a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 4:3.
While the two cameras under review share the same sensor size, the GH4 offers a slightly higher resolution of 15.9 megapixels, compared with 15.8 MP of the GX85. This megapixels advantage translates into a 0.3 percent gain in linear resolution. On the other hand, these sensor specs imply that the GH4 has a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 3.76μm versus 3.77μm for the GX85). Moreover, it should be noted that the GX85 is much more recent (by 2 years and 1 month) than the GH4, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of individual pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the GX85 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 200 to ISO 25600, which can be extended to ISO 100-25600. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85 offers exactly the same ISO settings.
Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors. Both cameras use a Bayer filter for capturing RGB colors on a square grid of photosensors. This arrangement is found in most digital cameras.
For many cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service assesses and scores the color depth (“DXO Portrait”), dynamic range (“DXO Landscape”), and low-light sensitivity (“DXO Sports”) of camera sensors, and also publishes an overall camera score. The Overall DXO ratings for the two cameras under consideration are close, suggesting that they provide similar imaging performance. The adjacent table reports on the physical sensor characteristics and the outcomes of the DXO sensor quality tests for a sample of comparator-cameras.

One feature that differentiates the GX85 and the GH4 is in-body image stabilization (IBIS). The GX85 reduces the risk of handshake-induced blur with all attached lenses, while the GH4 offers no blur reduction with lenses that themselves do not provide optical image stabilization.
The reported shutter speed information refers to the use of the mechanical shutter. Yet, some cameras only have an electronic shutter, while others have an electronic shutter in addition to a mechanical one. In fact, both cameras under consideration feature an electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (risk of rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (risk of flickering).
The Panasonic GH4 and the Panasonic GX85 both have an intervalometer built-in. This enables the photographer to capture time lapse sequences, such as flower blooming, a sunset or moon rise, without purchasing an external camera trigger and related software.
Concerning the storage of imaging data, both the GH4 and the GX85 write their files to SDXC cards. Both cameras can use UHS-I cards, which provide for Ultra High Speed data transfer of up to 104 MB/s.
Connectivity comparison
For some imaging applications, the extent to which a camera can communicate with its environment can be an important aspect in the camera decision process. The table below provides an overview of the connectivity of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 and Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85 and, in particular, the interfaces the cameras (and selected comparators) provide for accessory control and data transfer.

It is notable that the GH4 has a microphone port, which is missing on the GX85. Such an external microphone input can help to substantially improve the quality of audio recordings when a good external microphone is used.
Studio photographers will appreciate that the Panasonic GH4 (unlike the GX85) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.
The GX85 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Panasonic. In contrast, the GH4 has been discontinued (but can be found pre-owned on ebay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the GH4 was succeeded by the Panasonic GH5. Further information on the features and operation of the GH4 and GX85 can be found, respectively, in the Panasonic GH4 Manual (free pdf) or the online Panasonic GX85 Manual.

If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the GH4 emerges as the winner of the contest (12 : 9 points). However, the relevance of individual strengths will vary across photographers, so that you might want to apply your own weighing scheme to the summary points when reflecting and deciding on a new camera. A professional wildlife photographer will view the differences between cameras in a way that diverges from the perspective of a family photog, and a person interested in architecture has distinct needs from a sports shooter. Hence, the decision which camera is best and worth buying is often a very personal one.

How about other alternatives? Do the specifications of the Panasonic GH4 and the Panasonic GX85 place the cameras among the top in their class? Find out in the latest Best Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera listing whether the two cameras rank among the cream of the crop.
In any case, while the comparison of technical specifications can provide a useful overview of the capabilities of different cameras, it remains incomplete and does no justice, for example, to the way the GH4 or the GX85 perform in practice. User reviews that are available, for instance, at amazon can sometimes shed light on these issues, but such feedback is all too often partial, inconsistent, and inaccurate.
Expert reviews
This is why expert reviews are important. The adjacent summary-table relays the overall verdicts of several of the most popular camera review sites (amateurphotographer [AP], cameralabs [CL], digitalcameraworld [DCW], dpreview [DPR], ephotozine [EPZ], photographyblog [PB]). As can be seen, the professional reviewers agree in many cases on the quality of different cameras, but sometimes their assessments diverge, reinforcing the earlier point that a camera decision is often a very personal choice.
The above review scores should be interpreted with care, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation. Hence, a score should always be seen in the context of the camera’s market launch date and its price, and rating-comparisons among cameras that span long time periods or concern very differently equipped models make little sense. It should also be noted that some of the review sites have over time altered the way they render their verdicts.

Panasonic GH4 vs Panasonic GX85 Overview
Following is a in-depth review of the Panasonic GH4 versus Panasonic GX85, former is a Pro Mirrorless while the other is a Advanced Mirrorless and they are both created by Panasonic. The resolution of the GH4 (16MP) and the GX85 (16MP) is fairly well matched and both cameras posses the same sensor measurements (Four Thirds).
Coronavirus is affecting the sensor business
The GH4 was launched 3 years earlier than the GX85 which is quite a sizable difference as far as tech is concerned. Each of these cameras have different body design with the Panasonic GH4 being a SLR-style mirrorless camera and the Panasonic GX85 being a Rangefinder-style mirrorless camera.
Before getting right into a comprehensive comparison, here is a quick summary of how the GH4 scores vs the GX85 with regard to portability, imaging, features and an overall score.

Head To Head Comparison
Panasonic GH4
The Lumix GH4 measures 3.68 x 5.23 x 3.30″ (HWD), weighs around 16.93 ounces without a lens, and features a sleek, all-black body that is made of a tough magnesium-alloy material which promises a higher level of durability, while on the other side, Panasonic has also implemented a weather-sealing with the intention to maximize the camera’s durability, and allow the photographer to have a freedom in shooting under a variety of different environments and weather conditions.
Moreover, if you view from the front, you’ll notice the presence of the deep handgrip which is covered in a textured coating that will aid a lot on the convenience you’ll feel once you have this camera in your hands, and of course, on the stability which is essential for photographers.
I’d also like to mention that the GH4 holds numerous buttons that are spread across its body, some will find this difficult, others, including me, would like it because it won’t take much until you learn all of them and understand what they do in practice, and once you do, you will always be able to tailor the settings to suit your desires.
Namely, on the top plate, there are twin dials, one sits on the left the other on the right, a hot shoe on the center, whereas, also on the right, there are 4 dedicated buttons including a White Balance button, ISO, Exposure compensation button, a customizable Fn1 button along with a shutter release button located right on the grip!
On the rear, all of the buttons are spread on the top and right-handed side of the body, leaving enough space for the LCD screen to flip out. I like the way of how Panasonic managed to design the rear controls because they aren’t many and they are easily accessible.
In addition, there’s one more thing I particularly like regarding this camera, and that’s the 2.359k-dot electronic viewfinder that provides the user an exceptionally vivid view filled with strong details, and when we add the fact that the viewfinder covers up to 100% of the field, without a doubt I can say that you will never miss a target!
Also, the 3″, 1036k-dot LCD screen is extremely clear to shoot with and to preview your images, and what’s even better is that it is touch-enabled which will help you tremendously as you’re navigating between menus, as well as it is mounted on a vari-angle hinge that will guarantee you a convenient shooting experience from a variety of different angles!
Furthermore, the GH4 packs a decent number of connection ports, such as a single USB 2.0 port, micro HDMI port, single memory card slot that supports SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards, 3.5mm headphone output, 3.5mm external mic, 2.5mm remote input and has a built-in support for Wi-Fi and NFC, hence, you’ll have multiple options to transfer your content! Great job, Panasonic!
In terms of the performance, the GH4 employs a 16.1MP Digital Live MOS sensor, a -CPU Venus Engine that boosts the camera’s ability to produce JPEG and RAW images with minimal noise, 49-point AF, an impressively fast burst shooting speed of 12 fps, and an ISO sensitivity range of 200-25,600 which is expandable up to 100-25,600!
For your information, if you opt to shoot JPGs at ISO 3200, they look wonderful, the color accuracy is excellent and the detail level is indeed great, whereas, noise can’t be detected until you zoom 100%. Relatively the same can be said regarding ISO 800, while if you reach ISO 12,800, keep in mind that the noise will appear more but still, images are usable. At the highest level – ISO 25,600, although images may still be usable, I’d recommend you keeping them for emergency situations because noise becomes indeed prominent.
RAW images shot at 100 do not look good at all, while starting from ISO 3200, 12,800 and even ISO 25,600, details are preserved, so, the overall image quality remains strong although I wouldn’t push as far as ISO 25,600.
Finally, the GH4 let’ you record 4k videos at 24 fps, UHD videos up to 30fps, and 1080p videos at 60fps, hence, the footage does not only look pleasing for the viewer, but users can also opt to use this camera for professional purposes, and gain more skills in the field of videography! This makes it a popular camera amongst documentary filmmakers. It’s affordable, has a lot to offer and it’s great for video. What more could you ask for?
