GA-5 Les Paul Junior, 5W 1×10″ Combo

The Gibson amplifier model GA-5 has had many incarnations. The first model GA-5 Les Paul was introduced in 1954. The circuit of this amp is an almost identical copy of the Fender Champ (5C1 circuit). It was fitted with a Jensen 10″ field coil speaker. It had a “TV” style cabinet.

Gibson GA 79 RVT

6EU7 vs 12AX7:

In a guitar amp, I don’t think you’ll detect a big difference between a 6EU7 and 7025 or high quality 12AX7. Magnatone/Estey used a 6EU7 on the 460 and 480 of 1961-1963. Prior to that, they used a 12AX7 in the predecessor model 260 and 280’s. After the 460/480, they went back to the 12AX7 in the M15. If you look at the circuits surrounding those first triodes in all those amps, they used the same plate resistors, voltages, caps., etc.., so I don’t think there is any need to re-think the GA77RVT change to a 12AX7 other than pinout.

reverb:

you can use a 6U8A subbed for a 7199. They seem to have similar/same specs. as far as a reverb transformer, I think you could use a Fender reverb OT 7.5K:8 or a champ 8K:4/8ohm type transformer. Fender drove them with a parallel 12AT7, plus you have wiggle room with a reverb tank.

There was a shootout of vintage stereo amps (some guitar/amp magazine) where they compared the Magnatone (I think a M15), an Ampeg Twin-Echo, and a GA77RVT. you might fish around for it.

The downside about the GA77RVT is the trem and reverb is only in one channel. To see if you’d really dig the concept, put two similar amps next each other and and plug your guitar in to one and daisy-chain the input to the other. The 480/M15 at least has two separate vibrato units that are driven by the same oscillator, so there is enough variance in left and right that it really sounds stereo. I’d never suggest a 480/M15 build because you can buy one for what you’d spend in NOS varistors and transformers alone. As far as the GA77RVT goes, its a big project for an amp that isn’t a whole lot more that two discrete amps sharing a cab and power supply.

❌SOLD❌ Gibson GA79RVT Stereo Amplifier, 1966

Here’s a Gibson GA79RVT Multi-Stereo combo amp, featuring two ten inch speakers in a wedge cabinet each powered by its own 15 watt amplifier. This model was introduced in 1960 as the GA-79 and upgraded with Reverb and Tremolo to the GA-79RVT in 1961, and the entire line was discontinued in 1967 when Gibson ceased amp production in Kalamazoo.

On this example, the two 10-inch CTS speakers on this Gibson GA79RVT bear dates of the 8th week of 1966 – late February, and the Tolex covering is black faux-gator with a naturally faded silver/grey grille cloth. The wedge cabinet design is reminiscent of the Watkins Dominator amp, which at 18 watts was a high powered monster in the 1950’s UK market. The GA-79RVT uses four 6BQ5 (EL84) power tubes, two for each power amp. The preamp section uses three 6EU7 tubes, and one each 7199 and 12AU7 tubes along with a solid-state rectifier.

The Gibson GA79RVT has a number of features relatively unusual for guitar amplifiers. There are four instrument inputs in two channel groups plus a fifth stereo input marked ‘Accordion’, and a mono/stereo slider switch. In the Stereo position, the two channels are routed to separate power amplifiers. In the Mono position, the signal is routed to both amps for a total of 30 watts. As well, the control panel carries a pair of RCA jacks as a phono or turntable input. Each of the two preamp channels has controls for volume, plus treble and bass on concentric pots. The Tremolo control is also concentric, for frequency and depth, while the Reverb control is solely intensity.

This Gibson GA79RVT amp has been recently serviced and appears original except for the important safety upgrade to a 3-conductor, grounded AC power cable. It is in quite good condition with most of the physical wear to the handle. The original footswitch for Reverb and Tremolo is included, and its special holder in the lower rear cover is intact.

GIBSON GA-79RVT Stereo Cab plans or dims

Not sure what all the controls are on top as all the photos I have are not quite clear enough. Click to expand…

Yep, not exactly a perfect photo, But I figured after looking at the schematic it should be fairly easy to determine what knob is what and what the input jacks are.Im not done looking for more info on this one though, It seems to me that the amp was also released under another name also. I searched Kalamazoo to find those last photo’s.One thing that was common of Gibson back then was farming out electronics and amplifiers to other companies. I suspect it might have even been a Chicago made amplifier, Though there is little documentation on that specific amp. That one interests me a lot, Enough to build one!Lets keep in contact, Compare notes and see if we can come up with a couple nice sounding units for ourselves.Trout
