Do you light cure Gluma desensitizer?
Light-curing does not affect GLUMA Desensitizer.
How is Gluma applied?
Non-invasive treatment. Apply GLUMA Desensitizer and GLUMA Desensitizer PowerGel for an application time of 30 – 60 seconds. Air dry the liquid GLUMA Desensitizer until the gloss of the liquid disappears. Rinse off GLUMA Desensitizer and GLUMA Desensitizer PowerGel completely with plenty of water.
Does Gluma need to be rinsed?
After application on the hypersensitive tooth area, GLUMA Desensitizer/GLUMA Desensitizer PowerGel needs to be airdried. This step increases the desensitizing effect. Afterwards, the desensitizer needs to be rinsed off using plenty of water by the dentist/ dental assistant.
Is Gluma a primer?
For bonding and repairing silicate ceramics, you precondition the restoration using GLUMA Ceramic Primer. Universal bonding means: one for all! Let’s get to the point. One bottle provides the adhesive for indications of direct and indirect restorations – and for intraoral repairs of chippings and fractures.
Do you cure Gluma?
GLUMA does not need to be stirred or light cured, simplifying application and saving time. Desensitize: GLUMA is the only desensitizer that has been proven to penetrate exposed dentinal tubules up to 200 μm1.
Does Gluma interfere with bonding?
Gluma had no significant influence on bond strength of the three adhesive systems. Within the limitations of an in vitro investigation it can be concluded that Gluma did not significantly affect the bond strength of any of the adhesive systems tested.
How do you use tooth desensitizer?
Use your finger (or q-tip) to gently apply to your teeth one of the Calcium based desensitizing toothpastes. Let the paste set for a few minutes and then spit thoroughly; do not rinse for at least 30 minutes following application.
What is Gluma desensitizer?
Gluma desensitizer is an aqueous solution containing 5% glutaraldehyde and 35% hydroxyethyl methacrylate. Because glutaraldehyde is a biological fixative, it has been suggested that the dentinal tubules are occluded as an effect of reaction with plasma proteins from dentinal fluid.
What is the best tooth desensitizer?
KöR Complete™ Desensitizer has proven to be one of the most effective options in reducing or eliminating tooth sensitivity.
Is Gluma toxic?
However, in spite of beneficial results regarding dentin desensitizing, Gluma has been reported as toxic to different cell lines. Gluma desensitizer and Gluma Comfort Bond+De reduced MDPC-23 cells metabolism by 77% and 85.1%, respectively, indicating that both products are considered highly cytotoxic.
What is Hema in Gluma?
Use. Its formula of 5% glutaraldehyde and 35% HEMA (hydroxyethyl methacrylate) in water is used to help control both hypersensitive dentin and reduce the incidence of post-operative sensitivity in restorative dentistry procedures.
What color is Gluma?
It allows greater control and accuracy during application. Its unique green colour makes it easy to apply, easy to detect and easy to rinse clean. GLUMA Desensitizer – Two styles, one solution against hypersensitivity. The success story continues.
How do you close dentinal tubules?
It is concluded that glutaraldehyde can intrinsically block dentinal tubules. The septa in the tubules may counteract the hydrodynamic mechanism for dentinal sensitivity.
What does Hema do in dental?
2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) is a monomer based on methacrylic acid (MAA) used to produce biomaterials such as dental adhesive and composite resins [1]. The process of polymerization, which is run in situ, is always incomplete, resulting in the presence of free monomers in the oral cavity [2].
How do you use HurriSeal?
Apply 2-3 coats of HurriSeal Dentin Desensitizer and thoroughly dry with air syringe. 4. Cement temporary restoration. Caution: Do not use eugenol-containing products in combination with HurriSeal Dentin Desensitizer.
Is Gluma a glutaraldehyde?
Let’s get to it. Gluma by Heraeus Kulzer has been used as a desensitizing agent since 1991 and is a combination of 5% glutaraldehyde and 35% hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA).

GLUMA® Desensitizer
GLUMA Desensitizer contains glutardialdehyde and HEMA ((2-Hydroxyethyl)methacrylate). HEMA enables glutardialdehyde to penetrate up to 200μm into the dentine tubuli3. Inside the tubuli, glutardialdehyde reacts with the proteins present in the dentine liquor. The proteins precipitate and form protein plugs which close the dentine tubuli. This protein coagulation leads to the polymerisation of HEMA4. Because of these coagulated proteins (protein septa), the permeability of the dentine is significantly reduced5 and movements of dentine liquor inside the tubuli or other stimulating effects are lessened. GLUMA Desensitizer functions within the dentine tubuli and therefore do not interfere with adhesive treatments. It does not create a layer on the dentine surface. Other studies have shown further benefits from glutardialdehyde. It inhibits enzymes (MMPs) within the dentine that degrade the hybrid layer of adhesives over time6. Apart from this, glutardialdehyde has also demonstrated its potential for cavity disinfection7. Last but not least, it increases the strength of the dentine and may lead to more durable bonding8.

Gluma™ Desensitizer PowerGel – The Dental Advisor
Consultants’ Comments
Description
Gluma Desensitizer PowerGel contains the same active ingredients as traditional Gluma Desensitizer but in a gel form. The glutaraldehyde gel treats dentinal hypersensitivity by precipitating plasma proteins, resulting in decreased permeability and inhibited fluid flow into the dentinal tubules. It is indicated for the treatment of hypersensitive dentin in cervical areas and in teeth prepared for direct or indirect restorations. Gluma Desensitizer PowerGel is dispensed from a 1 g syringe through a brush-tipped cannula. Application requires isolation of the soft tissue, placing Gluma Desensitizer PowerGel onto the affected area for 30-60 seconds, followed by thorough rinsing. Each package contains four syringes of desensitizer and 20 applicator tips with illustrated instructions. Gluma Desensitizer PowerGel was evaluated by 27 consultants in 476 uses. This desensitizer received an 86% clinical rating.
Product Features
Gluma Desensitizer PowerGel is an effective desensitizer for cervical areas and under restorations. The new gel formulation is intended to increase control and accuracy of placement. The green color of the gel is visible on the tooth and helps ensure complete rinsing. During dispensing, it is hard to control the amount dispensed from the syringe. The viscous gel must be spread on the tooth with the brush tip. Because the tip is large, the gel sometimes contacts the cervical gingiva. Fifty-six percent of consultants rated Gluma Desensitizer PowerGel as better than their current desensitizer, and 26% reported it was equivalent. Seventy-four percent of consultants would switch to Gluma Desensitizer PowerGel, and 85% would recommend it.
Clinical Tips
Avoid contact of Gluma Desensitizer PowerGel with soft tissue; severe irritation will occur. Rubber dam isolation is recommended.
Do not use metal applicator tips.
For application into small areas, dispense gel into a dappen dish and use a small brush.
Editors’ Note:
Use caution to avoid contact of glutaraldehyde-containing solutions with mucous membranes, skin and eyes.
Gluma: Every Prep Every Time!
My friend and fellow dental educator Dr. Gary DeWood is famous for saying “Gluma, Every Prep, Every Time”. This accurately represents the way that I use Gluma Desensitizer by Heraeus in my practice. It is a part of every set-up in our office, and I have come to depend on it’s benefits based on my real life experience. The combination of Glutaraldehyde and HEMA work both by killing off bacteria, and sealing the dentinal tubules preventing fluid movement. Fluid movement in the tubules is known to be a primary cause of post operative sensitivity. Bacterial contamination of the dentinal tubules is associated with an increased risk of post-restorative endodontic therapy as well as being a contributing factor in sensitivity. Effectively reducing sensitivity combined with the anti-bacterial properties improve my clinical outcomes and the patient’s experience. For these reasons I follow the rule “Every Prep, Every Time”. For indirect restorations, this does mean they get treated both on the day we do the prep prior to placing the provisional, as well as the day we seat the final restoration.
There is a third benefit, the hydration of etched dentinal tubules that have collapsed due to over-drying. One of the challenges of a total etch technique can be figuring out how to dry the tooth, but not too much, after rinsing the phosphoric acid off. The application of Gluma following drying, alleviates this concern as it reopens collapsed collagen. So during total etch techniques it is applied after etching and before the application of primer and resin. It can also be used with self etching systems, and should be applied prior to the dentin adhesive.
It is available in two formulas, the original liquid and the new PowerGel. They work equally well, but do have different application protocols.
