Gremlin Costume
I wanted the face to be in two pieces that I could glue to my face. Having it be in two pieces gave me more facial movement and was far more comfortable than one piece and I didn’t want it to end up looking like a mask. The final mask is made out of standard latex from the costume shop.
First step is sculpting the face out of clay. I looked at a lot of pictures to get the characteristics of the flasher gremlin and did some drawings so I had a better idea of what I wanted.
Once the sculpture is done it is time to cast in plaster. I just used a crafting plaster powder. Once mixed it gets thick and wet so make sure your sculpt is in a container before you start pouring it on. This mask has a lot of details so I had to pay extra attention the get the plaster in those areas. After the sculpt was completely covers in plaster I backed the mold with plaster wraps to add stability.
Next pull all of the clay out of the plaster mold. Get it really clean so that the latex can get in every nook and cranny. Sculpting tools can help reach into the tight areas to get the dried clay out.
Now the fun part of putting the latex in the mold. I basically brushed in latex in layers over and over again, waiting for it to dry completely in between coats. Takes a while but once you pull the mask out you know it’s worth it.
The teeth are made out of Scultpy and then I painted the mask pieces. I also added a little hot glue drips and glycerin for a moist, drooling feel.
The ear are foam with clothes hanger wire pushed through it and then I used a green pair of panty hose for the flappier part and painted both. I fashioned a panty hose bald cap style covering for the rest of my head and painted it too.

Creative DIY Costumes
I have always loved watching Gremlins as a kid. This love has been passed down to my own children. They think the gremlins are so funny. My oldest daughter has noticed her 2-year-old sister has a lot of the same mannerisms as those little monsters, which just makes it funnier. (They don’t call it the terrible twos for nothing). It’s become a tradition to watch Gremlins every year at Halloween and Christmas. I, on occasion, even catch myself calling my kids “gremlins” when they are naughty instead of other choice words. I wasn’t sure how I was going to do it, but this year was going to be the year I actually made one.
I really wanted the costume to be as inexpensive as possible, like $20 or less. I have 2 other children that needed costumes and it can add up quick. This costume started with a $1 Halloween hockey mask and a roll of masking tape. I started crumpling up newspaper and taping and shaping it to the hockey mask to make the face. To make the ears I used a piece of 55 pound galvanized steel wire that I already had at home. I taped the wire across the forehead right above the eyes. I bent the wire to shape the top of the ears and tapped newspaper around the wires to shape the top of the ears. To make the part of the ears that hangs down I used a layer of the weekly store ads folded over. I securely taped them to the top of each ear. Then I cut them into the desired ear shape and taped the layers together at the bottom. Then I started to papier-mâché.
I used shopping adds I already had at home for my paper. I just used flour and water for my paste. This process took days adding layers and letting each layer dry. Well, at this point I had gone too far down the rabbit hole to stop. I had to see this through now for better or worse. As I was adding the layers of papier-mâché, I used wadded up pieces of papier-mâché to add details to the face. For the details on the ears I rolled up strips of masking tape and gradually stuck them on the ear flaps with strips of papier-mâché to make the ears look veiny and more detailed.
To make the eyes, I used an old plastic Christmas ornament I already had home. I cut it in half and used a half for each eye. Each half of the ornament I cut a diamond shape out of the middle and painted it.
To make the desired shade of green for the face and ears I mixed a dark green with just a tiny bit of black and brown. I lightly painted red over the areas of the face I wanted darker to add depth. Around the veiny looking parts of the ears I used a tiny more brown to make them look more realistic. The teeth are made from masking tape folded over itself multiple times and cut into shape. The gums are painted red. I used a little blue to create purple and red hue on the gums between the teeth to make them look like they are textured instead of flat. Inside the mouth I used the same color to make it look deeper.
After the mask was all finished, I realized the elastic on the dollar store mask was too flimsy to keep it on her head (sad face). I cut off the top of a pair of old panty hose and hot glued it across the back of the mask so it would cover the top and back of her head, without sliding around. It worked! Yay!
To make the body I bought a plain small long sleeve crop top shirt from thrift store for $1. The body of the shirt was small and short so the length of the shirt was perfect but the sleeves were extra-long. I cut the sleeves off at my daughter’s wrists. The cutoff sleeves were then used as leggings to match the shirt. The shirt was a little baggy in the armpits, so I sewed the seam up a little higher in the arm pits to make it fit better. Prior to painting I placed a piece of cardboard inside so it would not bleed through the shirt. I started with the stomach. I used acrylic craft paint that I already had in the garage. Around the outside of the yellow / beige part of the stomach, I outlined with black and brown to provide more contrast. I painted the stripes on the arms the same way. It took a couple of coats of paint to cover the shirt thoroughly. With a very light amount of paint I dotted darker green and brown randomly around the front of the shirt and on the sleeves between the stripes to try make it look more textured. Note to self, do not let paint dry on the cardboard. Pull the shirt away from cardboard before it dries all the way, or it will be glued solid to cardboard. Oh goodness, I learned that the hard way.
If I had to purchase all the materials, it would have only cost roughly $10 to $15. Most of the items were things I already had around the house. The only items I didn’t already have were the shirt, mask, and a couple small bottles of acrylic craft paint which totaled (drum roll please) a whole $3! Yay!
This costume was a labor of love. It took between 1-3 hours / day for about 2 weeks. It was a learning experience for sure. Looking back, it was fun making it, and it turned out better than I had imagined. My daughter absolutely loves it! That makes my heart happy. She is almost 3 and is the perfect height this year. She loves scaring everyone, dancing around, and doing a silly Gremlin voice that makes everyone laugh. It has brought a ton of entertainment to all our family and friends. I’m glad I finally did it.
Well, that’s the story. So if your air conditioner goes on the fritz or your washing machine blows up or your video recorder conks out; before you call the repairman turn on all the lights, check all the closets and cupboards, look under all the beds, ’cause you never can tell there just might be a gremlin in your house.

Gizmo Gremlins Kids Halloween Costume
Hi! So it’s been a while! My oldest is 5 and my youngest is 2 now!!!! Now I have twice the challenge for making super awesome DIY kids Halloween costumes! YAY! Before I move on to double trouble, I have to share one of my of oldest son’s amazing Halloween costumes! For those of you that have seen the movie Gremlins, I decided to make a Gizmo costume that was to die for! I always go into each project not knowing how the heck I’m going to pull it off and it always seems to come together.
As always I headed to my favorite store JoAnn Fabric to look for what I needed. I feel like they have a great selection of various types of fabric and I know I’d seen some furry looking fabric before. I chose a few that had the longest looking faux fur I could find. Be aware you need to know your child’s measurements before you go and grab your fabric.
For this post, I do not have a lot of step by step pictures as I am a doer and have a super hard time documenting when I’m in the swing of things, but I can demonstrate by adding drawings a descriptions that will help.
It’s looking like little bro is big enough to be Gizmo this year!!! My oldest was 3 when I made this for him… my youngest is 2 and it fits!
What you will need for your Gizmo Halloween costume:
Brown Faux Fur Fabric
White Faux Fur Fabric
Brown Zipper (appropriate length for your costume)
White Linen or Scrap Fabric
Poly fil Stuffing
3 Large Pink or Tan foam sheets (For ears)
Acrylic Paint (For ear details)
Glue (Fabric Glue or Any Glue will do)
Sewing Machine
One kid who doesn’t squirm ; )
Step 1: Measure your child!
Before you ever run to the store make sure you’ve got every measurement of your child that you can think of. This is a whole body costume so I suggest grabbing:
Height
Distance from feet to bottom of neck
Single arm length
Inseam (crotch to floor)
Hip to floor
Hip Width
Length of head and neck
Step 2: Draw Your Pattern & Cut:
FRONT/BACK Head :
For the head you’ll be working on the front and back simultaneously starting with the the brown faux fur by folding and doubling your fabric. Fold your brown faux fur fabric inside out. Then you will draw the general entire taco like shape of the head out of your brown faux fur in the pattern. Do not worry about any holes or white pieces yet! We will get to that. Before you draw this shape you want to mark your child’s head length and width on the fabric. You can also take a measurement from your child’s chin to their forehead so you know how big the face hole needs to be. I suggest making the marks for the dimensions and then lightly sketching the size of their head as a guide. Then you can draw the taco shape according to those dimensions. Do not forget to cut 1/4 inch outside of your pattern lines for seam allowance.
Once you’ve got the large brown piece cut it’s time to figure out where the white parts go. The diagram below is an accurate representation of how to draw and cut those pieces. Remember to save the pieces you cut from the brown piece so they can be traced on your white faux fur to replace the holes.
FRONT White Belly & Legs:
You’re going to want to take a measurement from your child’s chin to their crotch #1, then another measurement from the hip to the heel #2, crotch to heel #3, and lastly hip width #4. Make sure they are standing up straight with their heels against the wall. You can add an inch for fluff room. It’s ok for it to be a little big rather than small.
Draw the shape on the back of your faux fur fabric making sure it lines up with each of the 4 measurements. Try to draw it close to the edges so you can reserve fabric for the other parts.
When you are satisfied with the over all shape be sure to cut about 1/4″ on the outside of your lines to allow for seam allowance.
FRONT Brown Flank & Arm Pieces
Next you be cutting out the two brown flank belly pieces for the front and the front and back brown pieces for the arms as well as the white cuff wrist pieces. Place your newly cut white belly piece on the back of your brown faux fabric and draw the flank pieces to match up. Make sure they are the same height as the white piece at the top and end them right at the top of the legs. You can measure your child’s width from shoulder to shoulder and make sure that the width of top of the flank pieces in addition to the white belly piece are wide enough for that measurement. I used a black sharpie so I could see my lines well on the brown fabric. Don’t forget to cut 1/4 inch outside your lines for seam allowance.
Next measure out the length of your child’s arm and draw the arm pieces. You can fold your fabric in half so you get the back cut as well. You’ll need to cut about a 2″ inch wrist piece for each arm always keeping in mind to add for the 1/4 seam allowance.
Assemble all of the front pieces with pins before moving on to the back piece. Make sure you pin the pieces together so that the seam will be hidden once sewn.
BACK Body, Arms, and Legs:
Take your assembled front and lay it out on your brown faux fur to get the partnering shape of the back. Trace the shape of the brown body so it lines up with the front. You’ve already got your arm pieces from the previous cut so you can start to assemble so it looks like this. Sew all of your back pieces together.
When it’s time to put the whole thing together it will look like this laid out. You’ll need to pin it all together inside out for the final sew.. Do NOT sew the sides of the head yet. You’ll need those open to place the ears inside.
Ears:
Take your pink foam sheets and draw then general shape of what I’ve come up with. If you want them to be the same trace the one onto the other or don’t for some variety. Cut a top strip to give the ear some dimension and glue it on. The ears will be inserted into the side of the head and then sewn with one final stitch across. You will not see the thread with all the hair.
Testing out our ears…
Use some acrylic paint to paint in the details of the ears and give them dimension.

How to Make Greta Costume
Don’t be fooled by a Mogwai’s adorable, big eyes and short stature. They’re not as angelic as they seem. In fact, these creatures can be downright terrifying. They are also highly skilled in killing off people. While Gizmo might not be evil, it’s not an assurance that other Mogwais (or Gremlins) will be the same. Just look at Greta.
Gizmo is the adorable Mogwai pet that Ryan has. He has brown and white fur, huge brown eyes, and equally huge ears. Greta is the female gremlin who has long, big ears, a scaly green skin tone, and super red lips. She wears a leopard-print two piece outfit. Here’s everything you need to look like Gremlins.
