The Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid has this same basic setup, but it adds an 8.9-kWh battery. Both models are rated at 139 horsepower.

That isn’t very much muscle, and it feels like it. The Ioniq is sluggish when pulling away from a stop, and it doesn’t offer much merging or passing power at highway speeds. The dash from zero to 60 mph takes a leisurely nine seconds. Once in motion, the Ioniq provides adequate punch for zipping around town and navigating traffic, especially in Sport mode, but it isn’t inspiring. Fuel efficiency is this hatchback’s true focus. On the plus side, the transmission operates smoothly, and it does a great job of blending the gas and electric power sources.

It reverts to a gas-electric hybrid mode once the battery runs low or when stronger acceleration is needed. The Hyundai Ioniq tackles the everyday commute with mostly positive results. The Ioniq feels spry and maneuverable in town, thanks to its quick steering, and it maintains stability through turns with minimal body lean or sway. The brakes provide sufficient stopping power, and the brake pedal feels linear and natural to modulate, which isn’t always the case with hybrids.

The Ioniq’s issue is its ride quality. Smaller cracks and wrinkles in the pavement tend to jiggle the car around, while larger bumps and dips give the Ioniq a floaty sensation. It’s not uncomfortable, per se, the suspension just never feels settled.

The Final Call

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq doesn’t tick many boxes on the driver enjoyment checklist. It’s sluggish when getting up to speed and bouncy over rough roads. If you can look beyond these faults, however, there’s a lot to love about this Hyundai. It gets excellent fuel economy, it’s affordably priced, and it’s generous with both cargo space and standard features. All in all, the Ioniq is a good bet if you’re looking to save money at the pump and the dealership. It’s a solid pick in the hybrid car class .

Hyundai Ioniq Reliability, Safety & Euro NCAP

Hyundai has ensured the Ioniq is packed with safety kit, including seven airbags, autonomous braking, adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist all as standard, while blind-spot detection, lane follow assist and a rear cross traffic alert are offered on Premium SE versions.

Euro NCAP tested the Ioniq in 2016 and awarded it a full five stars for safety. Adult and child protection scored 91% and 80%, respectively.

The Ioniq performed well in our 2020 Driver Power customer satisfaction survey, finishing in 9th place out of 75 cars. Infotainment systems, safety features and running costs were highlighted as being particularly strong. Hyundai also achieved a decent spot in the manufacturer rankings with 13th position in a field of 30 car makers.

Warranty

Another huge selling point of the Ioniq is its five-year, unlimited mileage warranty. Alongside that class-leading cover, Hyundai will also throw in a 12-year anti-perforation warranty for the bodywork.

Servicing

Hyundai offers customers their Service Plan option, which helps to manage fixed maintenance costs. You can configure your service plan based on the model and age of your car, your mileage and plan duration. These details are then used to determine the cost of your plan, bearing in mind recommended service requirements and any necessary MOTs.

2022 Hyundai Ioniq Review, Pricing, and Specs

Overview

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq is perfect for folks who want a hybrid or plug-in hybrid hatchback that doesn’t call attention to itself and drives like a regular car. The hybrid’s combined EPA rating peaks at 59 mpg, and the plug-in version offers 29 miles of all-electric range. Unlike the Toyota Prius the Hyundai Ioniq looks dead conventional, and the hybrid model is more efficient than the thriftiest version of the standard Prius hybrid. However, Prius Prime plug-in hybrid delivers better fuel efficiency than the Ioniq plug-in—though the Prius offers only 25 miles of all-electric range to the Ioniq’s 29. When it comes to driving behavior, both Ioniqs are a bore and suffer from some refinement issues, but they’re comfortable and conventional enough to be confused for a non-hybrid. With an interior made from sustainable materials and a roster of desirable standard features, the 2022 Ioniq is eco-friendly and user-friendly. It’s also unpretentious, albeit unexciting.

What’s New for 2022?

The Ioniq hybrid lineup enters the 2022 model year without any changes whatsoever. However, Hyundai no longer offers an all-electric version, which we previously reviewed separately. The company says its decision to drop the EV is primarily due to the introduction of standalone Ioniq EV models, such as the upcoming Ioniq 5. This year will reportedly be the Ioniq’s last, as Hyundai is discontinuing it to focus on fully-electric cars and SUVs.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

To avoid the added cost and underpowered behavior of the plug-in-hybrid Ioniq, we’d go with the hybrid version. While the base Blue model is the most efficient, according to the EPA, we prefer the additional features that are found on the SEL model. It comes standard with 17-inch wheels, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, LED running lights, heated front seats, rear cross-traffic alert, and a sunroof. Apart from that, there are a handful of dealer-installed accessories to choose from.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Ioniq hybrid we tested wasn’t quick, requiring 8.9 seconds to accelerate to 60 mph. Shift timing isn’t perfect in Eco mode; the transmission pauses too long to downshift when you want to accelerate. The plug-in hybrid Ioniq’s combination of a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, electric motor, and six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission will be familiar to fans of the Ioniq and its cousin, the Kia Niro. The Ioniq holds its own on curvy roads, responding obediently to steering inputs and maintaining a firm grip on the road. If pushed hard in corners, the body leans, but overall the car feels stable and competent in most every situation. Pleasantly surprising are its composed ride and relaxed highway manners. All Ioniqs have steering-wheel paddles that you can use to modulate the level of regenerative braking, allowing drivers to approximate the one-pedal driving style that Tesla has popularized among EV cognoscenti.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The base Ioniq Blue model is the most fuel-efficient hybrid on the market. The Ioniq Limited we tested fell 2 mpg short of its EPA estimate during our test, but it’s still one of just a few cars we’ve tested that have topped 50 mpg. In our real-world testing, the plug-in did about as well as its closest competitors in our set of highway tests, but it failed to live up to the promise of its EPA ratings. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Ioniq’s cabin is comfortable and attractive even in base trim, and it can be well-appointed in more expensive versions. Adding to its green cred, Hyundai sourced sustainable materials for its interior, using composites made of sugar cane and volcanic rock. While the rear seats won’t inspire outrage on the part of your passengers, several competitors offer more room to spread out. The Ioniq fits about as much luggage as other members of its class and more than some larger competitors. Interior cubby storage lags behind competitors, but Hyundai has employed some clever tricks to maximize what space is available. The plug-in version gives up four cubic feet of cargo space compared with the hybrid model. You can blame the larger battery pack for the deficit, but it shouldn’t be a deal-breaker.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Even base models come with an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and auxiliary and USB ports—swank accommodations for an entry-level model. Top trims use a 10.3-inch screen that includes navigation. Hyundai’s touchscreen interface is easy to use and performed well in our tests.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Every Ioniq comes standard with a bevy of driver-assistance features, while upper trim levels include even more active-safety equipment such as an ability to detect pedestrians in the car’s path. OK Readers; This REAL review from a FORMER I.C.E. driver and owner for more than 05 decades. Thus I traded my 2018 Honda Ridgeline for this EV, reason not needed here. With that trade in- a whole new world began. I had to re learn EVERYTHING I knew about I.C.E driving. From the basics, like how does re gen brakeing work to thinking not, ‘where is the next gas station, I am running on … fumes’ to ‘where is the next EV charge point, I am running on sparks” This auto SEEMS, and other research confirms, that this is the ‘entry level’ sort of EV for the new to the EV experience should buy. It does not ‘freak out’ the tech phobs with its “2001-A Space Oddessy” tech, and a “HAL II’ sort of voice telling you EVERYTHING and ANYTHING. Getting into it may be a problem for those with mobility issues. The doors open wide and well, but this thing is LOW. And there is no grab handle on the driver door. Once IN, and you find some mid grade seating, all the controls are friendly, and there is a lot of driver leg room, The HUGE FLAW comes when you take the view out the back. ALL the headrests are in the way of the TINY rear windows, and some jerk smoking squids for lunch put the ‘spoiler ‘ smack in the middle of the too short back window. It may be a deal breaker for some, but you can ‘adjust over time’. I note the next generation of the “Ioniq” does NOT have this flaw, so at least Hyundai learned from its mistakes. The controls are easy to find and use. I much like the shifter, both in construction and placement. Right there were you can see it, with a hand rest, no less! Some EVs have it elsewhere, this seems sensible, and its NOT right on the steering housing where you can grab it in the dark for the wiper arm. DO NOT BUY THE BASE TRIM LEVEL! It has no Nav. system, and thus you cannot, with ease, find the next Charge Station, and have the system tell you how to get there. On the ‘cheap trim level’ I am stuck having to plug in a Smart Phone with this information. IMHO ALL EV should by Law and decency, have at least the Nav system with the EV charge points in it. Over all I am more than pleased with the auto. I do not need a huge range, so the short range, and less $ Ioniq is perfect for my driving needs. I am am NEVER going to be sad over missing out on ALL the repair costs to the old style gas. engines. SO, if you are new to the EV auto evolution, consider this Ioniq amoung your choices. —————– 2/23/2022 Readers: This writer is old enow to have owned a ’55VW Beetle when it was just a used car; so I am NOT of the age and generation to embrace an EV{BEV}. BUT, I was tired beyound words with ALL the upkeep of a gasoline powered auto, or ICE auto. So, having followed EV evolution since the very first commercial years, I thought it time to make the change. With that, I did the research [important that is} for an EV. My needs were easy; short driving distances, no need for a long range EV, and ‘just I’ and an occasional great grand kid, to be in it. You should buy an EV or any auto, based on how you drive 95%of the time. So, I found one local, that I could see, touch and drive. With mobility issues, I have to be able to get in and out of it ‘with out a crane’. It must be comfortable, have room for all my bits and parts, with good visiblity, good ‘road manners’, and cost effective, both in terms of cost and running costs. So I bought the “IONIQ” B.E.V or EV in the vernacular. It has four doors, folding seats for the times it has to ‘pretend its a small truck’, decent storage aft, very good lighting and its well constructed. Its interior is not “a science project’ gone wrong. It looks mostly like an “ICE” auto inside, which is PERFECT for me. The windows have plastic switches for the window motor, and are NOT buried in a huge I pad glued to the dash. Rather than a metal key, you have a ‘magic keyfob’: climb into the EV, touch the brake, push a button, and the EV gage screen makes a noise and a swirl of color, to let you know it is ‘awake and ready to play in traffic’. Rather than a gear shift, there is just a selection of buttons to push for your choice of direction. The ‘gas gage’ is replaced by a similar looking display that show how much charge is in the Battery, and it does it the way a fuel gage would. In all, its a well thought out vehicle. Now the downsides: One has to be the stupid spoiler that runs right thru the middle of the back window! Next, a low roof line for my 05ft and 09 inch height. And most annoying, and a fact I overlooked; this trim level DOES NOT have navagation systems. Which means you have to Fap about with a Smart Phone app, and your stand alone GPS to find where to ‘feed’ the EV on a longer trip. For ANY EV you buy, Reader–be CERTAIN it has a navagation system in the center screen. This device tells you where and how far, and if you can get to one or another one, with the charge left in the Battery. Sadly, this EV is now ‘obselete’ and been surpassed by the “Ioniq 05”. Its unfortunate, in many ways, this is a fine urban EV for most daily chores. The circa 179 mile range means that it is made for urban use. You can drive long distance in it- but you MUST plan the route well in advance. So, Reader, if you want a good commuter car, 02nd car, a car for the new driver in your house, or like conditions, have a view and try this one. That is IF the Dealers have one, know anything about them, or even care to sell you one. The Hyundia Dealers{and others} do not seem to be ‘fans’ of EVs.

This weekend my wife and I took a trip to Lancaster Pennsylvania for a quick weekend getaway. On the way our Palisades received two flat tires due to a road hazard. We used the Hyundai roadside assistance and that worked great. The next morning ( it was late at night when this happened ) we got a call from a saleslady from Colonial Hyundai in Downington PA telling us it would take two weeks to a month to get tires for the car. She said she would help us by selling us a new Hyundai at the same price of the one we had. I explained to her we couldn’t do that we had a kid home with a babysitter and needed to get home by the next day. She said there was nothing else she could do. About a half hour later I got a call from the service manager Michelle, when I explained to her our predicament she told me she would look into it and get back to us. She called back about a half hour later and said your car will be ready in about a hour and a half. The service manager was great. However the saleslady really needs to go. How dare she take advantage of people this way. Colonial Hyundai needs to fire this lady! Beware of unscrupulous salespeople especially if you fine yourself in these type of situations.

I was told Massy’s technicians have been well trained, and servicing will need to go through Massy because of the technology involved. The cables under there are serious business.

Roadside assistance – Massy is said to be working with their partners to ensure they are well trained in providing any specialized roadside assistance the Ioniq may need.

Cables are just copper conductors… where is the “Serious Business” in that? That is like saying the gas line is “Serious Business” because you know, gas is flammable and poisonous. All vehicles are supposed to be serviceable one the proper procedures from the manufacturer are followed… but the tiida seems to defy that logic so I digress.. much less these new technofangled machines. I am usually against high-tech but I can see how these would reduce gas consumption in our gridlocked traffic. I need to open a garage for these since Massey is already spreading fear and misunderstanding about the technology right out the gate. Should be able to charge a pong and a crong for service.
