Intercooler on ebay 24″w 11″h 3″d core will flow 500cfm and support 700 Max Hp. This one doesn’t make sense to me at all because 500cfm is about 350Hp right, and its a bigger core than the full-race?

Mishimoto claims their 20.5″w 6.25″h 2.25″d core is tested @ 740cfm. How do they even cram 740cfm though that tiny little core, I can’t imagine the pressure drop at that flow rate?

I don’t understand how these rating are so far out of proportion with each other. Can someone clear this up for me so I can properly size an intercooler to my car and horsepower goal. Thanks, Chris

Got it, so I would say that is normal returning to about 1500 then something is adding air for a little until it returns normally to 800. I’d disconnect the IACV and AAC wiring and see if it still happens, might be ECU sending a signal to add air, or might be a faulty air valve if it still happens

Sup guys , I would like to know some info on intercoolers . This is my intercooler :What i would like to know is this , probably this intercooler would flow like 1200 cfm and my F1 blower is capable of flowing 1500 cfm ( so 1000 hp ) . So does this mean that i could only make like 800 hp because the intercooler can’t flow more cfm or does making more boost means that it can flow more cfm . I Ask because i see some twin turbo intercooler on cars that made 1000+hp and doesn’t look bigger or much bigger then mine . From looking to my intercooler it looks like it cools less then others intercooler ( like the griffing ones ) cause it doesn’t have too much core but flows more because of that . I am getting my alky control (progresive alcohol injection kit ) next week so i’m deciding that if the intercooler is small for my setup i would be using only the alcohol injection and get all the cfm out of the blower . I’m not good explaining this cause i’m not an english speaker . So any info on intercooler vs hp vs boost , or what diferent type of intercooler should affect cooling or hp should be realy aprecieted .ThanxGeomar

The gasoline motor is basically an air pump: The more air that flows through it, the more horsepower it makes.

Estimating air flow by horsepower

If you know how much horsepower your motor makes, you can estimate its air flow in cubic feet per minute (CFM).

We are measuring the surface area that the charge air hits when it enters the intercooler. The length of the tubes are nowhere near as important as the number of tubes. The second half of the length of the tubes only does around 25% of the cooling.

Piping

Intercooler pipe size can be too small. If we are trying to force the air through at too high a speed, it can lead to exponential increases in drag.

We want the intercooler pipes to be as big as they need to be but without causing reduced throttle response. Having said that, bigger is better than too small.
