Violinist Isabella Geis is an active chamber and orchestral musician and educator currently based in New York City where she is a student of Naoko Tanaka and David Chan at The Juilliard School. She has performed extensively in Cincinnati, her hometown, and in various venues throughout the US in cities such as Atlanta, Detroit, and Kansas City. Recently, she has appeared as the concertmaster of the Juilliard Orchestra as well as in the violin sections of the Princeton Symphony Orchestra and Montclair Orchestra. Chamber music and the beauty of performing in people’s homes, businesses, and community centers interests Isabella. She finds that the intimacy of these settings supports a great connection with her audience, created both through her music and the discussions which follow her performances. She has performed in chamber concerts at Juilliard in Paul and Morse Halls, Seiji Ozawa Hall in Tanglewood, Harris Concert Hall in Aspen, as well as in different Groupmuse locations throughout NYC. Isabella currently enjoys teaching a small studio of private violin students and in Cincinnati she has volunteered at MYCincinnati, an educational nonprofit supplying children with both musical instruments and guidance, fostering a wonderful community of young musicians. She is looking forward to returning to her role as a teaching fellow in the CLIMB program at Juilliard which introduces young children to both literature and music. Why Juilliard?
Because of the variety of new experiences I would have, from ensemble work, interdisciplinary projects, and contemporary music to teaching fellowships and community engagement programs. I also chose Juilliard because of my desire to work with private faculty who had careers and outlooks that would really expand my artistry.
What activities have you been involved in?
One of the teaching fellowship programs I hope to return to post-COVID is CLIMB (Combining Literacy Instruction With Musical Beginnings), where I worked with a drama student to introduce students ages 4-7 to similarities between storytelling in drama and classical music. I have also been part of the Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging (EDIB) working group—a group of faculty, staff, students, and staff who meet about programs that can be offered to the Juilliard community to create necessary conversations around topics such as anti-racism, gender expression, and power dynamics and to foster an environment in which each person’s identity is respected and supported. I have also been a Hire Juilliard Performers group leader, which has taught me how to draw up contracts, create a great client/performer relationship, and be adaptable to a variety of performing situations in addition to giving me the chance to perform in some amazing settings.

What activities have you been involved in?
I co-founded the first LatinX student organization at Juilliard and organized several events that encouraged students to share their culture through their art. I was a Diversity Advocate for a year, creating programs and events that brought awareness to the Juilliard community. I’m currently a Resident Assistant, helping students through this difficult time, making sure they have a place they can call home. And being a Gluck fellow allows me to share my culture with my fellow Latino ensemble members and to connect to the community outside of school and support others through our art, to bring smiles to their faces, and to bring the arts to audiences that are not often exposed to it.
What has your scholarship support enabled you to do?
I could not have been able to attend this amazing school, meet my closest friends, learn about who I am as an artist and how to be an activist, and find my voice, if it weren’t for my scholarship.
What are your post-Juilliard aspirations?
I want to keep telling my people’s stories, reach people’s hearts, challenge people’s opinions, bring in new ideas, give voice to those who are silenced, make people smile, create a theater company in my hometown, and one day be able to fund my own scholarship for someone who needs it.

I’ve always been interested in interdisciplinary collaboration, and Juilliard’s history of excellence in music, dance, and drama was very attractive.
How do you balance life and school?
Outside of class, my life as a husband, artist, and teacher continues. I’m still leading bands, composing new music, producing records, and teaching students when I can. It’s been intense balancing school and life but rewarding. Being a teaching fellow and working with the students of PS 191 has been the highlight of my last year at Juilliard. The teachers and students are so sweet and interested in the arts. It’s wonderful to work with them.

In attending Juilliard, I have gotten an extremely wellrounded education that is rooted in musical knowledge, historical knowledge, and the protection of artistic integrity in all disciplines.
What activities have you been involved in?
As a MAP, Morse, and Gluck fellow and, outside Juilliard, Reaching for the Arts teacher, I am able to play with great musicians while teaching multiple subjects such as improvisation, saxophone fundamentals, jazz repertoire, recorder, using art to create change in the world, and more.

I am currently a student at the Juilliard School and have started to teach more within the past five years. I have really enjoyed working with elementary school kids in the past through a nonprofit, and have taught a wide range of abilities, ranging from very early beginners to other advanced players who are hoping to audition for a university/conservatory. For beginning students, I really enjoy using the Suzuki method, as this is how I started, and because of how I feel it helps one to develop a more musically attentive ear.

I am currently studying at Juilliard and I started to teach in high school. I really enjoyed my teaching work with the nonprofit MyCincinnati which was mostly focused on beginning students that were in elementary school. In the past, I have also worked with advanced students and have helped them in preparation for auditions for youth symphonies or universities/conservatories. If you are a beginning student I would love to have you start with the Suzuki method as I find it is especially useful in the way it can help better your musical ear in addition to basic music reading skills.

I am currently in my third year of undergrad studies at Juilliard. Originally I am from Cincinnati, Ohio where I took lessons at the College Conservatory of Music throughout high school. In these first two years at Juilliard, I have found myself to especially enjoy chamber music, and I consistently perform in a trio and quartet.
