EXCERPT FROM JULIO ANAYA CABANDING INTERVIEW –
What is your most favorite and least favorite part of creating a mural? What is your most favorite and least favorite part of working in the studio?
My least favorite part of painting a mural is the prep work that goes on before I can actually start painting. It could be from getting a concept approved to buffing the wall.
Once that process is done, then we can actually get into the paint, which is the best part. Seeing how the wall comes together and interacting with people in the street during the process is what makes it all worth it. In the studio, it’s pretty much the same. I really enjoy the creative process, but I struggle having to be indoors, confined to a space for long hours.

Julio Anaya Cabanding

Julio Anaya Cabanding creates pictorial interventions in the urban landscape by meticulously crafting replicas of famous paintings and displaying them in unlikely public places. Born in Málaga, Spain, Cabanding began his practice by recreating …

Julio Anaya Cabanding

The result is not only a painting that pretends to be a painting and a relationship with an environment, a sometimes strange and inhospitable scenery, or a deteriorated or residual support, it is also the action of taking the picture of the museum, stealing the image… and the sacrum of the institution to put it in another place, in a place where it is never seen or seen in a different way.

Julio Anaya Cabanding

Julio Anaya is a graduate of Fine Arts from the Univeristy of Malaga, 2018. His art reinterprets the works of the great classical masters by painting on discarded and deteriorated cardboard, collected from abandoned places and rehabilitated in his studio in order to give them a new identity in a different context. The contrast of this results in the decontextualization of those rigid structures established within the art world. In successfully painting Great works on discarded cardboard, Julio calls into question what it is that we truly value in art

Julio Anaya Cabanding

Spanish artist whose practice is based on creating meticulous replicas of the renowned museum-worthy images in surprising public locations or on found objects. Painting replicas of masterpieces of Renaissance, Baroque, Impressionism, etc, he is developing puzzling creations which challenge notions about the relationship with fine art.

Street is the new museum: Julio Anaya Cabanding’s paintings

If we had not started building houses and cities our eyes would have been able to see miles and miles away without any distraction. In some ways we would have felt a sense of sameness in many parts of the world, seeing a homogeneous landscape without contrasts, an opposite definition to that of a city, especially one as large as Los Angeles.

Photographer Andrew Soria has captured this detail of his city, namely the layering of contrasting elements that define the landscape and different neighborhoods.

Andrew Soria in this series made with collages of different photographs wants to celebrate the identity of the city by representing the characteristic elements of each neighborhood. Store and fast food signs as well as skyscrapers thus appear as a guide to the city’s different neighborhoods, but also a narrative of the condition of those who live in them, whether poverty or extreme wealth.

The photographer says his Welcome to the Neighborhood series “This project aids in the beautification process of the city, and helps build a sense of character amongst locals and tourists alike. It brings awareness, nostalgia, and a sense of pride to its vibrant neighborhoods.”

You can follow Andrew Soria’s digital work and pop-surrealist cityscapes on his Instagram account.

Julio Anaya Cabanding

Julio Anaya studied Fine Arts in the University of Málaga, his work recreates iconic artworks and hides them in abandoned places, resulting in impressive contrasts. The ephemeral nature of his work makes photography fundamental because, by allowing the documentation of the work, it gives meaning to the artistic action. The story closes with this gesture: the painting of a painting, which no longer exists.

In a few occasions, the spectator can approach the work and watch it live, since the interventions generally take place in locations of difficult access. The result is not only a painting that pretends to be a painting and its relationship with the environment, a landscape sometimes strange and inhospitable, but also the action of taking the painting out of the museum, stealing the image, stealing the painting.

UNSTOLEN • Tales Of Art

Tales of Art gallery in Imola, Italy, is proud to present a debut solo show by Julio Anaya Cabanding opening on 27th of April and organized in partnership with Musei civici della Città di Imola. Young Spanish artist whose public interventions and captivating studio works have been catching the attention of mainstream media worldwide will be presenting his first ever gallery solo exhibition titled Unstolen, as well as his debut institutional presentation.

Curated by Sasha Bogojev the exhibition was conceptualized as an overview of Cabanding’s unique practice that is based on liberating the precious classic masterpieces and bringing them closer to the general public. Through his poetic public interventions, Malaga-based artists started recreating the pieces from a local museum into abandoned and unpopular urban spaces through his hometown.

Painstakingly rendering the image of a classic painting displayed in a museum, together with its framing, light and shadow effect, he wanted to juxtapose his trompe-l’oeil remakes of classic old masters against the remote atmosphere of abandoned places as well as started building an unprecedented bridge between the common people and often elitist fine art world. This unique concept brought the artist a lot of international interest and after showing his works through Spain, in Canada, and painting public works in Scotland recently, he is now opening his big solo debut in Italy.

Invited to present his work in Imola, a historic city that was a temporary home of Leonardo da Vinci back in autumn of 1502, young Spanish artist wanted to mark the 500th anniversary since the death of the famed Italian Renaissance artist and polymath. Intrigued by the fact that it was Imola where Leonardo created the world’s earliest surviving ichnographic map, both beautifully drawn using delicate colors and washes and technically precise, Cabanding decided to pay a tribute to the master by recreating his Head of Leda drawing which was actually a study for the lost painting Leda and the Swan. The drawing will be presented at the Museo di San Domenico along with the drawings and studies by Leonardo’s contemporaries such as Carracci, from the museum’s permanent collection. Through such gesture, the artist is creating a glitch in his creative process and instead of “stealing” the work from museums to place them in urban space, he is bringing a very personal item that wasn’t originally created to be shown publicly, into a public institution.

The gallery presentation will include an overview of the artist’s public work captured on photographs as well as an original intervention painted on the walls of the gallery, along with a whole new series of studio works created exclusively for this exhibition. Including the iconic works by Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Monet, Friederich, Camprobin, or Vuillard, his studio pieces are painted on found cardboard which was primed through a custom developed process making it rigid and time resistant.

Part of the new series of studio pieces will be displayed in a site-specific installation that will be built in the main space of the gallery, and the cooperation with Musei Civici di Imola is further extended by creating copies of the works from their collection, including the Portrait of a Woman by an unknown painter from Bologna, which was stolen from the museum last year, only to be found a few months later at the house of a local “collector”.
