Kate Liu

Hehe, and of course in Coral Gables.

Good to see that she’s allright. I hope I’m not starting any rumors now… but I first heard about her through a Polish friend around the time of the Chopin competition who tried to get me interested in her playing even before R1. I can’t find anything about this in my e-mail archive now, but my memory – at least – is that it turned out he was friends with her boyfriend or something like that and hence had a bit of vested interest in her. About a year ago now I wrote and asked if he knew anything about Kate, but was met with a wall of silence, and then eventually just that she had “problems”. No further info relayed. If I’m right in remembering that he had personal connections to her he would surely know what’s going on, but that he chose not to tell perhaps in that case says a thing or two about the nature of the incident…

Kate Liu’s Atmospheric Steinway Society Recital

When the Steinway Society presents a sold-out recital by Kate Liu this Saturday night at San Jose’s Trianon Theatre, she’ll play works by Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, and Prokofiev. For a couple of years, the prize-winning Singapore-born pianist was recovering from a hand injury that curtailed her performances.

There’s more information at the Steinway Society website.

Kate Liu has won the New York International Piano and the Asia-Pacific International Chopin Competitions, and got the Bronze Medal in Warsaw at the Chopin Competition there. For all of her wins, though, she says the purpose of taking part in competitions has changed for her over the years. “I think when one is much younger, these competitions are kind of exciting – they’re sort of a thing to look forward to, and to work your way up… I’ve always treated competitions as a way to improve, and I think for many that is the way, and it’s the healthy way, really. To do well, you can’t really have the thought of ‘competing’ in your mind to advance you musically. The music has to advance by itself, in your interest, and your love for whatever it is you’re playing, and for whatever it is that you’re investing all your emotion into.” Her injury is behind her now, but for two years it was a considerable disruption. “I had to work really, really hard to get back on track with the right sort of positions, the right sort of relaxation, less tension… Because when you get any sort of injury in your hands, and you’re a pianist or any sort of instrumentalist, it kind of freaks you out for a very long time, because you’ll never know how it’s going to affect you, and the moment when it happens, you also sort of fear that you’re never going to be able to play again.”

Even with today’s proliferation of piano competitions, the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw has held its place as one of the most prestigious. Past winners include some of today’s legendary names in music.

The winners of the 2015 edition of the competition have all, in their own way, developed major careers. Gold medalist Seong Jin Cho has had a meteoric rise in the music world since the competition, playing around the world to sold out houses. In Asia, and especially in his native South Korea, he has achieved almost rock star status. He has branched out from playing Chopin, and has since recorded best selling albums of the music of Debussy and Mozart. Canada’s own Charles Richard-Hamelin, a very close runner up to Cho, also enjoys a highly active career, playing in his native country as well as internationally. His recent recording of Chopin’s Piano Concerti was given a rave review by Gramophone magazine. Kate Liu, third prize winner and winner of the Polish Radio Prize for best playing of a mazurka, had a hiatus to her career because of a hand injury. We are happy to report that she has now resumed concertizing, and made a return visit to Poland this past summer, where she again won the hearts of the Polish audience with her original artistry.

Eric Lu, who won 4th prize at the competition, went on to win the gold medal at the 2018 Leeds International Piano Competition, and is now enjoying a spectacular career. Canadian Tony (Yike) Yang, who won 5th prize, performs as recitalist as well as concerto soloist, and is currently pursuing a joint Economics and Piano Performance degree at Harvard University/New England Conservatory of Music. Sixth-prize winner Dimitry Shishkin went on to win 1st prize at the Geneva International Competition and 2nd prize at the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2019. Szymon Nehring, one of the finalist, went on to win 1st prize at the Artur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in 2017. Georgijs Osokins, who received honourable mention at the competition, also enjoys an active performing and recording career, and frequently performs with Gidon Kremer and his Kremerata Baltica Octet.

The Vancouver Chopin Society is proud to have presented Seong Jin Cho, Charles Richard-Hamelin, Kate Liu, Eric Lu and Georgijs Osokins, all in their Vancouver debuts. You will be happy to hear that Eric Lu will perform for us again in the 2020-2021 season. We are already looking forward to presenting for you winners from the 2020 competition. Stay tuned! Spring Offerings From The Gilmore: Concerts by Kate Liu, Kirill Gerstein

Pierre van der Westhuizen, the executive director of the Gilmore Keyboard Festival and a concert pianist himself, joins Cara Lieurance to preview the final concerts of the spring season. On April 28 at 4 pm, American pianist Kate Liu, a finalist of the 2015 Chopin Competition, will perform works by Beethoven, Mozart and Prokofiev in the Wellspring Theatre. Westhuizen recalls the day he watched the livestream of the famous competition, and how Ms. Liu’s performance stood out among all the others. Liu had to withdraw from performing in recent seasons to allow an injury to resolve – something Westhuizen says athletes and musicians share in common.

On May 7 at 8 pm in Chenery Auditorium, the 2010 Gilmore Artist Kirill Gerstein will replace an ailing Murray Perahia on the Piano Masters Series. Gerstein, who has returned to Kalamazoo more times than any other Gilmore Artist, will play a wide-ranging program of immense variety and difficulty, Westhuizen says. Westhuizen and Cara Lieurance get into the details of the great Liszt Sonata in B minor and other works on the program.
