Finding this wine at my local Costco was like stumbling upon a unicorn being groomed by fairies in forest while winning hide and seek against a sasquatch. I can’t miss the opportunity to review it since I have this rare find in-hand. So, here’s my wine review on the 2016 Kirkland Signature Chablis Premier Cru.

2019 Kirkland Signature Series Premier Cru Chablis
Finally, for the first time, we didn’t skip a vintage on the Kirkland Chablis. For some reason, this one either doesn’t always appear near us, it sells out fast, or it skips a vintage. I think it’s a combination of the first two.
But we found it this time, and there’s good news right off the bat. The price went back down to $17.79, which is about where it used to be, down from $19.99 that we saw in the previous vintage.
That is still a sweet price for Premier Cru Chablis no matter how you look at it. We also welcome a new winemaker with the 2019 vintage, Pierre Brissy, who appears to work with several Burgundy estates, at least according to a quick Google search. And you see Suckling gave the wine a nice 93 points.
Looking back historically we’ve been walking up the ratings for this wine reaching a high of 89 in the most recent 2018 vintage.
2014 vintage: 87 points
2016 vintage: 88 points
2018 vintage: 89 points
If history had its say, we’d be giving an easy 90 points for the 2019 vintage. And that’s exactly what I’m going to do. This might be our favorite vintage so far.
The wine pours a medium gold in the glass with citrus fruit aromas; it is medium in body with great flavor, very elegantly delivered; lemon, green apple, nectarine; excellent finish too. We’re big fans of Chablis, so this clean, unoaked style of Chardonnay really appeals to us.
This expression in particular is very well executed in our opinion, and this wine remains an amazing buy, way below what you will find for any other Premier Cru Chablis.
So this Kirkland wine will finally hit our Top Picks list, which makes me happy as I’ve always wanted it to reach this level. Grab a few for summertime too.

Kirkland Signature Premier Cru Chablis – Inexpensive Elegance
We check out the new vintage of this big time Burgundy at a bargain price, the Kirkland Signature Premier Cru Chablis.
100% Chardonnay from Burgundy, France. The wine sees no oak and is aged in stainless steel for 12 months.
The Kirkland Signature Premier Cru Chablis is available for $17.79 at Costco. Very few Premier Cru wines are available under $20, with most costing $30+. It is imported by Misa Imports.
Kirkland Signature Premier Cru Chablis is made with Chardonnay grapes sourced from the finest Premier Cru vineyard sites. The Kimmeridgian soil, a blend of limestone and clay, gives the wine a distinct minerality. The wine is aged 12 months in stainless steel tanks and has flavors of lemon citrus and white floral notes with a refreshing lifting acidity.

Today we are revisiting this Chablis Premier Cru wine, a designation in the Burgundy region that normally carries a much higher price. Not to the level of the Grand Cru wines, these wines are nevertheless very high quality with strict controls on vineyard sites and maximum yields. A relatively cool climate, south facing slopes that get lots of sun, and the unique limestone and clay soils dotted with seashells all create a fabulous recipe for growing high-quality Chardonnay grapes.
The price on this particular Kirkland Signature bottling has bounced around over the years. It started at just $14.99 for the 2014 vintage and went up to $19.99 with the 2018 vintage. It seems to have moderated a little bit with this latest 2019 vintage, coming back down to $17.79.
The wine also has a new winemaker this time around, Pierre Brissy, who appears to be the winemaker for multiple Burgundy houses including his own winery. (Previous vintages were made by Odile Van Der Moere.)
The 2019 Kirkland Signature Premier Cru Chablis begins with a quite a pleasant aroma of lime and green apple plus a little grapefruit and tangerine and maybe just a touch of lemon cream.
Tasting the wine shows it to be really delicious with tons of rich fruit. It is very pleasing in the mouth with lots more lemon, apple and pear as well as tart fruit flavors of pineapple and grapefruit. It doesn’t have quite as much acidity and crispness as the 2018, but it does have tons of flavor and is a bit more round and smooth in the mouth.
Some chalky minerality leads into the tart, smooth and long finish. This is a great example of how good unoaked Chardonnay can be and a rare chance to try a Premier Cru Chablis under $20 (albeit just under)!

While perusing the shelves at Costco Lihue, I picked this Premier Cru Chablis up for a song.
Aged in stainless steel for a year, this was a great wine to enjoy in the warmth of Kauai on the lanai. I did not want any wood on my wine, so I was in the market for some Chablis, and this one delivered.
On the eyes, it’s pale lemon with a nose of citrus, green apple and white flowers. The palate has super acidity and flavours of lemon verbena, green hay, jasmine, chalk, and a rocky minerality.
Pierre Brissy is the winemaker but that’s the only proprietary information on this bottle. This is a new winemaker for the Kirkland Chablis which started out in 2014 at US$14.99. The buying power of this chain has kept it sub US$20 – and for a Premier Cru, white Burgundian wine, that’s an awesome deal.
If you can access this wine in the US, run, don’t walk, to pick some up.

Chablis is a region of Burgundy that mainly produces oaked and unoaked Chardonnay-based wines known for their steely, concentrated, rich, and ageable character. The grapes in this region grow in a unique soil known as “Kimmeridgean” that is rich in limestone, clay, and millions of fossilized oyster shells that are said to impart a flinty flavor to the wine.

Happy New Year friends!
In the strangest of years, we have made it to the doorstep of 2021. That which doesn’t kill you makes you stronger indeed.
You might expect that we would be featuring a sparkling wine with it being New Year’s Eve and all. But that would be so boringly predictable. Not to mention that we reviewed a sparkling wine just last week in our penultimate Thirsty Thursday post of 2020. Plus you know the saying “man doesn’t live on Champagne alone” or something like that.
In more normal years, you might be entertaining (or being entertained by) a large group of friends and family. And you might be reticent to bring a bottle – or two – of Kirkland Signature wines. It’s not that they are not good and highly drinkable, it’s just that they are unabashedly – from Costco!
But if you are enjoying a quiet night at home with or without a significant other, perhaps you can get away with these two delicious and high QPR wines that are in my local Costco right now. If you are entertaining a small group – no judgement! – you could always decant them and just introduce them as a “modest Chablis” and/or”one of the best Cab values you have tasted from Rutherford in Napa”. Both would be true in our opinion.
Let’s start with the Chablis:
Chablis is the steely, dry white wine made in the northernmost vineyards of the Burgundy region of France. And like all fine white Burgundies, it is made from Chardonnay grapes. But if you are not familiar with fine Chablis, don’t expect it to taste like New World Chardonnays made in places like California.
The appellation of Chablis consists of 7,500 acres surrounding the small town of, wait for it, Chablis. Created in 1938, it has four ranks, the top most of which is grand cru Chablis. Wines like this one bottled under the Kirkland Signature brand – being premier cru – are just one notch below that.
Chablis is actually a bit separated from the rest of Burgundy. So much so that the “heart” of Burgundy, Beaune, is over 60 miles to the south. The vineyards of Chablis are actually closer to those of Champagne. That explains a lot. Both are crisp and mineral driven due to a history of grapes that could not achieve anywhere near the ripeness levels we enjoy here in California. As climate change warms the region, new fleshier flavors emerge, but as we said already, you are not going to confuse this wine with a California Chardonnay.
Tasting Notes: Typical wet stone aromas, along with notes of citrus, cloves and ripe pears. Dry and medium bodied with flavors of lemon, pear and green apples on the palate. Nice acidity and minerality to cleanse and refresh the palate. Would pair well with fatty flavors like white cream sauces, risotto and soft cheeses, although potato chips would be pretty yummy too.
Now on to the Cab:
If the Napa Valley is synonymous with Cabernet Sauvignon – and it deservedly is – then its Rutherford District is known for some of the finer expressions of said grape. It is also uniquely known for a quality in the wines known as “Rutherford Dust”.
Some mystery still surrounds the term “Rutherford Dust” and its creator. That said, in his book “Private Reserve” about the history of Rutherford’s iconic Beaulieu Vineyards, writer Rod Smith recounts the first time André Tchelistcheff tasted the 1936 Beaulieu Cabernet Sauvignon (which later became the first vintage of the winery’s Georges de Latour Private Reserve bottling). He writes, “The most intriguing thing about the wine was a whiff of clean dirt with a high-toned note something like pencil shavings. André recognized it as the expression of a distinctive terroir—the very fragrance of Rutherford. To describe it, he would later coin the term ‘Rutherford dust’.”
The 6,000 acre Rutherford District of Napa Valley is perhaps the single best-known Cabernet Sauvignon growing area in California. Incredibly, the Rutherford District American Viticultural Area (AVA) was only established in 1993, nearly 60 years after the aforementioned 1936 vintage that helped put the area on the California wine map.
Tasting Notes: Medium body, beautiful ruby color. Dark fruits on the nose. Cherry, blueberry, and a touch of bramble in the mouth along with notes of mocha powder. Soft dusty tannins on the finish. Would pair really well with grilled meats, game and hard mature cheeses.
