Laphroaig 25-year-old
This is a masterly whisky that, with its enormous layering and complexity, you can keep busy. This is not whisky to “drink away” on a weekday evening. But especially one that you really need to take the time for. The difference between the smell and the taste intrigues me enormously. The fact that this whisky has been peeled off the barrel strength gives an even more intensive drinking experience and certainly adds something to the complexity. By tasting the whisky and smelling at the same time you get an overwhelming impression of this masterly composition. Unfortunately, the price of this whisky is slightly out of my budget.

Nose A fresh, fruity, sweet, balanced and complex whisky with notes of malt, malt, muesli, mandarin, lemon peel, pineapple, almond, papaya, mango, caraway seed, plantan, raisins, plum, fig, green guava, passion fruit, fennel, liquorice , soft creamy smoke, anise, white wine, coffee, toffee, honey, soft subtle oak, rosewood, roasted pine nuts, sweet sherry, salty, chocolate, cinnamon, marmalade, wet wool and a subtle medicinal tone. The scent is initially very fruity and maltig and slowly develops into a heavier and more complex whisky. He needs a lot of time in the glass to achieve a good development.
Taste A powerful, intensive, full, spicy and complex whisky with notes of greasy smoke and earthy peat (more than the smell suggests). Earthy tones (from wet forest soil, peat, wet leaves & a hint to dried manure), honey, lemon, brine, grapes, plums (fresh and dried), raisin, baked apple, liquorice, licorice, cough syrup, anise, fennel, caraway seed , clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper, leather, cereal, balsamic vinegar, oak, tannin, chili pepper, minerals (lime and flint), old rope (hemp), bitter cocoa, bitter orange marmalade, marmite and sleepers. The taste is quite different from the smell you suspect. The smell is soft and seductive and the taste is strong and intense. The layering of this whisky is very beautiful and always gives a new aroma experience.
Finish The finish is very long, warm and slightly drying with notes of white pepper, honey, lemon, bitter grapefruit, chocolate, oak, tannin, smoke, peat and a hint of sleepers. After a few hours there is still a Laphroaig aroma, thunders!

This is the 2009 annual release of Laphroaig 25 Year Old. This edition was matured in Oloroso sherry and American oak casks and bottled at 51%.
Prior to any bid being placed on a lot, close up visual inspection is to be carried out. If you are unsure in any way about the condition of the said lot, click “ask a question” above. More in-depth descriptions and additional photos can be taken upon request. Otherwise, lots are sold as seen in the pictures. The bidder understands that once you have bid, you are stating you understand this and that the checks stated above have been carried out and you are happy with the lot’s condition.
TGWA may try to highlight conditions of interest of lots being sold in the auction. The majority of the items being sold are of second-hand nature and TGWA cannot be held responsible for any conditions that may not have been specified when listing the lots on the site. This one was matured in ‘a combination of the finest oloroso sherry and American oak casks’. I think this ‘American oak’ mention can be misleading as most sherry casks are made out of American oak anyway if I’m not mistaken. Colour: gold. Nose: this is rather strange. Curiously herbal and vegetal (beans, cabbage), very farmy, with whiffs of wet animals (dogs, sheep – sorry both) and then big, bold notes of antiseptic, bandages and embrocations. The most medicinal Laphroaigs I ever nosed. With water: really toned down but even earthier (old pu-erh tea). Touches of ink, old papers and mud. Mouth (neat): rawer than expected from a 25yo, almost as rooty and earthy as the 10 but also more medicinal again. Cough medicine, heavy liquorice lozenges and lime. Aloe vera juice. With water: it got cardboardy and dry, water works much worse than with the 10, which is a little strange. Muddy waters! Finish: long, rather bitter, herbal and a little acrid. A little grapefruit in the aftertaste.
