From a vineyard planted over tufo in Pitigliano, this is roughly half Sangiovese with the other half being a mix of Syrah and Merlot. It spent three weeks on skins, before being pressed off to vat to rest for six months. This is perhaps our favourite vintage yet of what Clem and Gianmarco dub their ‘picnic wine’, offering plenty of red cherry, earth and bitter herbs, whilst remaining incredibly light on its feet.

After harvest, the red grapes are left on to macerate on their skins for about 20 days, during this time fermentation takes place. Dry, juicy , cherry fruit driven flavours and a cool luscious/viscous feeling on the palate. A little funky in the end. More than totally enjoyable.

Tasting Notes: The Rosso di Gaetano is mostly Sangiovese with additions of Merlot and Syrah. Harvest is made by hand from the beginning of September, up until the beginning of October. The wine is made without technological processing or chemical additives; fermentation occurs spontaneously due to indigenous yeasts without adding sulphur dioxide; malolactic fermentation follows naturally, usually after the alcoholic fermentation, sometimes ending in the spring. It packs a punch of Brambly dark fruit and spice on its medium frame. It’s an energetic and lively wine on the palate with touches of bright cherry and olive.

Estate History: Gianmarco Antonuzi and Clementine Bouveron are the husband and wife team behind this natural winery. They both worked in Alsace for the iconic Schueller and once married, they relocated in Italy and bought a beautiful abandoned piece of land in Gradoli, facing Lake Bolsena, at the border of Tuscany. Their approach is extremely strict and based on byodinamic principles. These are some of the most natural wines of Italy. Extremely pure and expressive, they are a joy to drink. Le Coste Vineyard began in February 2004 with the purchase of three hectares of abandoned land known as “Le Coste”, which had once been a “garden” of vines and olives. The vineyard has since grown and now covers about 14 hectares. On all the property they practice “natural” agriculture, without any official certification, but with great respect for the environment, in order to create a natural balance which intensive farming would certainly disturb.

150 kilometres north of Rome (Lazio), 40 kilometres from the Mediterranean coast, on a hilly landscape 450 metres above sea level lies Le Coste, a 14-hectare garden of vineyards and olive trees that Clémentine Bouveron and Gianmarco Antonuzzi bought in 2004 with the aim of recovering vineyards and ancient traditions. From that day on, this couple, who met and fell in love at maestro Schueller’s estate in Alsace, embarked on a romantic and professional journey to produce many different wines year after year, all of which are a pure reflection of their surroundings.

Of all their wines, they call Le Coste Rosso di Gaetano their “picnic wine” for its simplicity and honesty. Made with Sangiovese, Syrah and Merlot grapes from vines planted on volcanic soil rich in iron and minerals, this wine is handcrafted without the use of any chemical products. Instead they use biodynamic and organic treatments to protect the natural balance of the vineyard. When the grapes are harvested, they are immediately taken to the winery to begin a three-week skin-contact maceration. Fermentation takes place spontaneously with native yeasts and the wine finally rests for 6 months in oak and 6 more months in the bottle.
