Lower register: Somewhat developed in placement but not nearly as well explored as one would desire. Mixed register: A very consistent part of his voice, where he’s able to keep resonance, good support and placement from the bottom of his mix to even as high as G4/G#4 consistently and is able to stretch that into support and resonance on A4’s. Above A4, however, the mix doesn’t lighten up causing strain in his voice.
Upper register: His least explored register by far is his falsetto. It is safe to assume that he can transition into this register in the higher 4th octave with enough ease to keep stable pitch, but the few times he has gone up into the fifth octave were mostly with an airy falsetto in studio.
Agility
As a rock singer, Lee Hongki shows little to no interest in developing agility in his voice. Due to the heavier technique used to sing rock music, where he relies on a chestier mix and more volume, he tends to lose the flexibility existent in the outer parts of the vocal cords that help creating a lighter mix and also a more agile voice. The few times he has done any kinds of slight jumps in vocal melodies, such as in “사랑사랑사랑”, his pitch is mostly fine and his runs generally are quite slow. It is not particularly necessary for him to develop such an ability as a rock singer, but it could be something to be looked into if he has the interest to expand into more genres of music in the future.
Overall analysis
One of Korea’s mid-generation idols and one of the first idols to break into the band music scene, FT Island’s Lee Hongki is also very well known for his unique tone and his singing skills. The tone of his voice is very light and boyish in nature, and yet possessing a husky manly quality to it as he ascends in pitch or adds intensity to his singing. The overall natural tessitura of his voice lie closer to that of a tenor, more likely falling into the Light Lyric fach.
When it comes to his lower range, FT Island’s music is often written for their specific vocal ranges and even by the members themselves. As such, most of the songs often fall in between the D3 ~ A4 range, sometimes peaking at B2 to B4, thus not allowing for much to be shown when it comes to support and development of registers. Having said that, however, Hongki has shown enough times through his more acoustic performances that he is capable of comfortably supporting his voice consistently as low as E3, such as in “I Confess“, D3 in “미치도록” and “Words I Haven’t Said“, and even more recently showing the ability to consistently produce audible, supported and well placed, comfortable C3’s, such as in his performance in the “Vampire Musical” as well as an acoustic cover of “다행이다“. giving the idea of airiness being a stylistic choice more so than lack of development, as well as indicating recent improvement in his lower range. As he descends below C3, however, the tone of his voice is usually lost to a more airy tone and his vocal cords lose the connection they have above that, as well as his support starting to become more shallow, such as in the B2’s of “미치도록” and A2’s from “빛”, where he heavily relies on a more vocal fry-like tone to let the notes come out.
As Lee Hongki ascends into his mixed range, his voice becomes more piercing and more intense, opting for a darker tone with a heavier use of chest voice in his mix. The heaviness is mostly due to the chest-dominant mix he uses, as opposed to him having that dark of a tone. His voice is generally very consistent in support in his mix, producing effortless resonance from F4 ~ A4. He has shown numerous times that he is able to sustain G4’s with resonance, such as in “내사랑내곁에” and”사랑사랑사랑“, G#4’s, such as in “청혼“, “그대는인형처럼웃고있지만” and “사랑앓이“, and A4’s such as in “말리꽃“, “모두다사랑하리“, “고해” and “신사동그사람“. Even though his placement is quite pleasant and so is his support, the result of a chest-dominant mix can be that at times fatigue can cause his condition to change quite easily and for his range to be affected. At times Lee Hongki might fall flat when trying to sing above A4, due to the lack of head voice in his mixed voice, such as the Bb4’s in “좋겠어” and “바래“. At other times, even in better condition, the strain in his voice becomes apparent above A4 due to the heaviness of tone, causing Hongki to rely a lot on his throat and having a high larynx on higher belts, such as the B4’s in “신사동그사람“, “PRAY” or the C5’s in “태양을피하는방법” and “조조할인“. Even though, he does still show characteristics of a tenor by being able to push his voice to mix as high as Eb5, while singing “지독하게“, even with a heavy chest-muscle coordination. Another downside of his mix, as well, lies within his stylistic choice of purposely tensing up his voice with heaviness of rock singing, which can cause his voice to sound throaty and slightly tense, such as in “사랑앓이 (Different Performance)” and “고해“.
The highest register Hongki has shown is his falsetto register. As opposed to the rest of his voice, this register is not nearly as used nor as explored, which can be due to the fact that he is not as confident using this register live, as well as it not fully fitting the style of music he usually sings. In the original version of “태양을피하는방법“, Rain sings a full tone below Hongki’s key and switches into falsetto on a Bb4, whereas in Hongki’s cover, he chooses to belt the C5 instead of switching. The few times he’s switched live, he shows less projection and the sound of his voice becomes clearly more airy and less well placed, creating a disconnected falsetto instead of a full sounding head voice, such as the A4 in “조조할인” and the G4 in “이젠남이야“. The few times his voice can gone above the fourth octave were the C#5’s and D5’s of “미치도록“, which he avoids live and the A5 in the studio version of “사랑사랑사랑”, where there’s a clear need for a push of air causing strain in his voice and showing a lot of tension, which can also validate the theory that his voice just isn’t as comfortable in his falsetto register as it is in the rest of his range.
Musically speaking, he has a very sensitive ear to music and is able to perform quite well within the rock-pop genre of music, using the right degree of airiness, throatiness, resonance, dynamics and knowing exactly when to be soft, quiet and whisper-like, or when to really give all his power to further emphasize the full content of the music he sings, to better deliver his vocal performances. For the most part, Hongki shows not only consistency in tone produce, a consistent column of sound, support and pitch, but also he shows many times the ability to use vibrato with a healthy natural vibrato, and the ability to control that vibrato, choosing when to add it and when not to have it in his singing. As he ascends above his supported range, however, his vibrato becomes generally unsteady, uneven and tense.
As a performer, idol, vocalist and entertainer, Lee Hongki has always shown professionalism and a passion for what he does. Not only has he consistently been able to sing better as the years passed, he always delivers good performances, knowing how to use the stage and how to act out the best he can on stage. As a vocalist, however, Lee Hongki’s main priority would be further developing the rest of his chest voice into his lower extremes, as well as learning better mixing technique to become even more versatile in his upper range, as well as exploring the rest of his falsetto range.
Musicianship
Although for the most part Hongki generally stays in the original melody lines of songs, he has the ear to further embellish his songs by playing around more so with the rhythmic approach of the vocal delivery, than the melodic approach. Even then, Hongki has shown a couple of times the ability to change his songs around, even if subtle in changes, he does have the sensibility to add to the music, as well as changing parts of the melody to better fit the condition of his voice in the day of the performance, examples including the acoustic versions of “사랑사랑사랑” and “미치도록“.

On June 3, FTISLAND’s Lee Hong Ki appeared as a guest on JTBC’s “Ask Us Anything” and asked the cast to guess his greatest flaw as a singer.
Kim Heechul was one of the first to guess and said, “You turn ugly when you start to sing,” and started to imitate him.

Lee Hong-gi (Korean: 이홍기; born March 2, 1990), also known mononymously as Hongki, is a South Korean singer, actor, and media personality. He is best known as the front man of rock band F.T. Island. In 2015, Lee debuted as a solo artist with the releases of his first Korean extended play FM302 and his first Japanese album, AM302. As an actor, Lee started his career by starring in children drama Magic Kid Masuri (2002). He later successfully transitioned to adult role and participated in various television dramas, notably You’re Beautiful (2009) and A Korean Odyssey (2017).
Acting career [ edit ]
Before Lee Hong-gi debuted as a singer with the band F.T. Island, he was a child actor, making his acting debut in 2002 with KBS2 TV series Magic Kid Masuri as Masuri’s friend Kim Ji-hoon.[2] This children drama gained popularity among elementary school students during its run. He was also featured in EBS children drama Kkangsooni, where he played the character of Eo Soo-bong, and sang for the drama’s OST.
In 2008, he was offered the lead role in Master of Study, the Korean adaptation of Japanese drama Dragon Zakura. Master of Study should have aired in the beginning of 2009 but due to preproduction difficulties, the drama was postponed to the beginning of 2010 which led FNC Entertainment to refuse Lee’s role because of his busy schedule with the band.
Lee then played Lysander in a Korean musical theatre version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream,[2] where he showcased his singing, acting and dancing skills. In 2009, after a five-year break, he made his acting comeback and took the role of the quirky but loveable drummer Jeremy in You’re Beautiful.[3] To promote the drama, he also contributed solo tracks to the OST, such as “Promise” and “Still/As Ever.”[4] He received a New Star Award at the 2009 SBS Drama Awards for his performance. You’re Beautiful recorded modest ratings in South Korea, but it became an international success and with it, Lee’s worldwide popularity increased.
In April 2011, Lee starred in the TBS Japanese drama Muscle Girl! opposite Yui Ichikawa.[5] This was followed by a 90-minute Korean-Japanese co-production titled Noriko Goes to Seoul, in which he played a young aspiring singer who meets an older woman (Takashima Reiko) who inspires him through hardships to achieve his dream.[6]
In June 2013, he made his big screen debut in the movie Rockin’ on Heaven’s Door (Korean title: Passionate Goodbye), with Baek Jin-hee, in which Lee portrayed as a rebellious music star who is sent to work in a hospice.[7][8]
Lee began filming Bride of the Century with Yang Jin-sung. He went on a four-week rest after he dislocated his shoulder and suffered facial fractures during December 2013.[9][10] He resumed shooting in January 2014, and the drama aired that February.[11][12]
Lee also starred in SBS Modern Farmer alongside Park Min-woo, Lee Ha-nui, and others. The drama aired from October 18, 2014 to December 21, 2014, at 20:40 on Saturdays and Sundays.

In 2007, Lee debuted in the band F.T. Island as the lead singer. He can also rap and beatbox.
Lee decided to pursue a career in singing after he starred in Kkangsooni, for which he sang a song for the soundtrack. At the end of the drama, he performed the song live on stage. He was 13 years old at that time. Impressed by his powerful vocal ability, a few music agents approached him, not wishing to waste his talent for singing. Then-fledgling label company FNC Music signed Lee and fully trained him to become the lead singer of F.T. Island.
Solo debut [ edit ]
In 2015, Lee announced through social media that he was working on both a Korean and Japanese album, which was released in November and December respectively.[13] The mini Korean album was revealed to be FM302, and the album was released on November 18, 2015,[14] while the Japanese album was revealed to be AM302, and it was released on December 9, 2015.[15] ‘FM302’ combines the radio terminology frequency modulation (FM) with Lee’s birthday which is on March 2, to create the effect of his own radio frequency that resonates his music across the world. The title song “Insensible” is a ballad track and it tells the sad story of a man who is unable to forget his previous love. The music video was published on November 18, 2015.[16] The lead actress of the music video is actress Park Shin-hye.[17] Prior to his official music video release, a showcase was organised.[18] Upon the release of FM302, it topped both Naver’s real-time search chart, as well as Hanteo sales chart. The album still retained its position next week, selling more than 19,000 albums within two weeks. Moreover, six days after the release of the album, Lee won first place on SBS MTV’s The Show for the first time.[19] The album charted at No. 2 on Gaon Chart’s national physical albums ranking, as well as No. 5 on the Gaon Social Chart in the 3rd week of November.[20]
On the other hand, the music video for the lead single of the Japanese album AM302, “モノローグ (Monologue)”, was published on November 11, 2015 on F.T. Island’s Official Japanese YouTube channel. The Japanese album contained some tracks from the Korean album FM302, but was translated into Japanese. The album is also available in three different sets, namely, the original version, Primadonna version (for fans), and the limited edition DVD version.[21] Upon release, it charted at #4 in the Oricon charts.[citation needed]

On May 21, 2015, Dal Shabet’s official YouTube channel uploaded a video titled Joker in Rock Version. The video was a collaboration with Lee and Subin singing Joker in rock version.[22] It was believed that the two decided on a collaboration when Lee and Subin met on Hello Counselor.

In recent years, Lee has also begun composing music, contributing the songs “Black Chocolate” and “Orange Sky” to F.T. Island’s Japanese album Rated FT, as well as the title track “Memory” and the song “Always With You” on F.T. Island’s Korean mini-album Thanks To, “Siren” from their album The Mood and title song “Wind” from their album Over 10 Years .[23][24] He also composed Japanese songs “On My Way”, “Just Please” and “Born to be a Rock n Roller”.[25][26]

Lee was enrolled in Kyunghee University studying theatre and film.[2]
Lee started his own fashion brand ‘Skullhong’ in June 2014. He designs accessories, jewelry and various nail products.[27] It was originally based in Seoul, but has since expanded its business to Hong Kong, and Tokyo, Japan.[28]
On September 30, 2019, Lee began his mandatory military service, becoming the first F.T. Island member to enlist.[29] Lee was discharged on April 18, 2021.[30]

Vùng giọng pha: Vùng giọng mượt nhất để cậu có thể thể hiện tốt, rõ ràng từ những nốt thấp nhất trong vùng giọng này đến những nốt cao hơn như G4/G#4 và có thể kéo đến A4. Tuy nhiên, trên A4, giọng pha thường không sáng và khiến giọng hát như bị kéo căng.
Âm cao: Đến thời điểm bây giờ thì chủ yếu dùng giả thanh. Có thể nói rằng cậu ấy có thể chuyển sang hát âm cao trong tầm hơn 4 quãng tám với khả năng giữ giọng ổn định. Nhưng đôi khi, khi hát lên quãng tám thứ 5, giọng chủ yếu là giả thanh (không dùng lực, hát bằng khí/hơi).
Sự linh hoạt của giọng hát
Vì là ca sĩ nhạc rock nên Hong Ki có vẻ không hứng thú trong việc chuyển biến linh hoạt giọng mình. Bởi nhạc rock thường buộc dùng những kĩ thuật hát hạng nặng mà người hát thường phụ thuộc vào giọng ngực và cường độ lớn, Hong Ki có xu hướng mất đi sự chuyển biến linh hoạt giọng hát nằm ngoài dây thanh đới – bộ phận tạo nên giọng mỏng và nhanh hơn. Có một vài lần cậu ấy có thực hiện một vài đoạn nhảy nhịp, ví như trong “Love Love Love”, quãng âm ổn và nhả nhịp chậm đều. Thực ra cũng không cần quá quan trọng việc tập luyện kĩ năng này với một ca sĩ nhạc rock, nhưng có lẽ đây cũng là một điều nên xem xét nếu cậu ấy có ý định tiến sâu hơn với nhiều thể loại nhạc trong tương lai.
Đánh giá chung
Là một trong những thế hệ tầm trung của thần tượng Hàn và là một trong những thần tượng đầu tiên bước vào con đường ban nhạc, FTIsland Lee Hong Ki được biết đến với chất giọng lạ và khả năng ca hát. Chất giọng tự nhiên đã rất nhẹ và nam tính, tuy nhiên có thêm chút khàn (husky) càng giúp cậu tiến sâu hơn trong ca hát. Sự hòa quyện ấy khiến giọng của Hong Ki nằm rất gần với chất giọng Tenor (nam cao), lại gần với chất Light Lyric fach (sau một hồi tìm gu gồ, wiki các kiểu thì gần như bất lực với kiểu giọng này ;__; Nhưng mình nghĩ đây là chất nam trung trầm, ấm)
Nếu xét đến vùng âm thấp, những bài hát của FTIsland thường được viết riêng dành cho âm vực phù hợp của họ, và thậm chí là chính các thành viên viết. Nên thường các khúc sẽ rơi vào khoảng D3 ~ A4, đôi khi lên cao nhất thì thường từ B2 đến B4, bởi vậy không cho phép thể hiện quá nhiều khi cần support và phát triển quãng âm. Tuy nhiên có người cho rằng, khả năng của Hong Ki được thể hiện nhiều hơn qua những màn biểu diễn acoustic khi mà cậu có thể thoải mái support giọng mình thấp xuống đến tận E3, ví như“I Confess“, D3 trong “미치도록 (- Madly) và “Words I Haven’t Said“, và thậm chí gần đây còn được thể hiện khả năng hát trực tiếp, thể hiện C3 mà không bị lạc giọng như màn diễn trong nhạc kịch “Vampire Musical”, cover acoustic của “다행이다“, nghĩ thoáng ra thì là tạo phong cách hơn là thiếu sự phát triển, với cả gần đây cậu ấy cũng cải thiện kha khá trong âm vực thấp rồi. Tuy nhiên khi hát dưới C3, tông giọng của cậu ấy không có nhiều lực (-hát khí) và dây thanh đới mất kết nối, support cũng nông hơn, như là B2 trong “미치도록” (-Madly) và A2 trong “빛” (-Light) , những bài hát Hong Ki nặng về tông như fry (quãng âm thấp nhất mà con người có thể xuống được. Đây là quãng âm rất tự nhiên, có sự liên kết với giọng ngực (giọng nói bình thường). Trong ca hát thì Vocal fry là quãng âm ít được trọng dụng nhất những nốt trầm xuống bằng Fry không đẹp, không có lực, không rõ chữ, không vững nốt.) để có thể hát thành nốt.
Khi hát dùng giọng pha, giọng cậu ấy trở nên mạnh và dữ dội hơn, phù hợp cho bài tông tối với việc nặng về tận dụng giọng ngực trong hát pha. Sự nặng này chủ yếu là do giọng ngực là giọng chú yếu trong giọng pha của cậu, nên việc hát từ F4~A4 không khó khăn gì. Cũng có vài lần Hong Ki cho thấy cậu có thể chịu được đến G4, như trong “내사랑 내곁에” và”사랑사랑사랑“ (-Love Love Love), cả G#4, như trong “청혼“ (-Marry you), “그대는 인형처럼 웃고 있지만” (- Smile like a doll) và “사랑앓이“ (- Love Sick), và A4 như trong “말리꽃“(-Jasime Flower), 모두다 사랑하리“, “고해” và “신사동 그사람“ (- Shinsadong, that person). Có vài lần Hong Ki bị flat (hát chưa đến nốt hoặc cao hơn nốt một chút nhưng chưa đến nốt tiếp theo – chắc là lạc nốt?) khi cố hát những nốt trên A4, lý do bởi ít dùng head voice (Giọng óc: là quãng giọng cao nhất của âm vực, dây thanh quản chỉ đóng 2/3 chiều dài, 1/3 còn lại được hở ra, sử dụng để tạo độ rung), có thể thấy như Bb4 trong “좋겠어” (-I wish) và “바래“(- I hope). Một vài lần khác, thì dù đang trong tình trạng tốt, thì việc căng giọng vẫn rất rõ ràng khi lên cao hơn A4 do tông khá nặng, khiến Hong Ki dựa chủ yếu vào thanh quản khi belt (*Belt : một trong 2 cách hit note phổ biến. Belt là kĩ thuật hit note full, nghe mạnh và rõ, gần giống như hét vậy), như là B4 trong “신사동 그사람“, “PRAY” hoặc là C5 trong“태양을 피하는 방법” và “조조할인“. Tuy nhiên, cậu ấy vẫn thể hiện được nét riêng của nam cao khi đẩy giọng pha lên tới Eb5, như khi hát “지독하게“, mặc dù đấy phải phối hợp cơ ngực. Một mặt khác trong giọng pha của cậu ấy nằm ở cách chọn phong cách hát – đè nặng giọng khi hát rock, có thể khiến giọng cậu ấy khá khàn và dữ, như trong “사랑앓이 (bản remix khác)” và “고해“.

Là một nghệ sĩ giải trí, thần tượng, Hong Ki lúc nào cũng thể hiện sự chuyên nghiệp và đam mê của mình. Không chỉ vẫn luôn hát tốt trong suốt nhiều năm, mà cậu còn mang đến những màn biểu diễn đẹp, biết cách dùng sân khấu và thể hiện tốt nhất trên sân khấu. Tuy nhiên là một ca sĩ, ưu tiên chính của Hong Ki là phát triển giọng ngực xuống thấp hơn, học thêm về khả năng hát giọng pha để linh hoạt hơn trong vùng giọng cao, cũng như khám phá những vùng giọng giả thanh còn lại.
Tài năng âm nhạc
