Legend of the Blue Sea Episode 15 Recap

Joon Jae sees someone from his past.

Legend of the Blue Sea Episode 15 Recap

After dinner Sim Chung (Gianna Jun) leads Joon Jae (Lee Min Ho) to another room She THINKS “my heart only beats if you love me. My heart on land has a limited time. If you leave me or this world, my heart stops beating. Unless I return to the ocean, I’ll probably die.” Without thinking, Joon Jae asks if she’s dying. Shocked, Sim Chung asks what he said. Joon Jae asks what will harden without him. Sim Chung realizes that Joon Jae can hear her thoughts. Joon Jae says she stated her heart would stop. Sim Chung wants to know how long he’s heard her thoughts. Neither one of them cares to answer the other. Angry he demands to know when she will die. She’s angry too and demands to know when we started hearing her.

Joon Jae says he knows everything about her, her beginning, their former encounter, etc. She’s stunned. He tells her he remembers everything she erased. She’s stunned.

Joon Jae pushes her to deal with what she said about her heart. His world is not her world. When she gave up the water for him, she tied herself to him. Joon Jae asks if he dies, will she? Sim Chung confirms this. Joon Jae recalls Professor Jin telling him that their love for each other will kill each other and therefore is ill-fated.

Joon Jae says that Dae Young isn’t the problem, he is. He could be the one to kill her. Sim Chung steps towards him. He steps back. They stare at each other.

Good opening scene. Cards are on the table. Now how do they deal with their new reality?

Sim Chung weaps in her loft bedroom. The pearls are piling up.

Joon Jae wonders if he returns Sim Chung to the sea, could he avoid her death?

Jo Nam Doo finds Joon Jae and tells him that Sim Chung is crying. Joon Jae tells Nam Doo that when Sim Chung sought him out that was her greed. But keeping her with him, that’s been his greed. Nam Doo says there’s something about Sim Chung he just can’t remember.

With hindsight, Sim Chung realizes when Joon Jae began hearing her voice. She wonders why he kissed her. She opens the loft door and sees him stares at her. She comes down to talk.

Sim Chung confesses that Nam Doo because a different person once he knew she was a mermaid. He wanted to use her to make money. That’s why she erased his memory. Sim Chung wants to know if Joon Jae had similar feelings. Joon Jae confirms she didn’t scare him or make him upset. She was unusual from the beginning. Sim Chung admits that knowing that he knows eases her heart and the fear she had that he would reject her. Joon Jae admits that he fears the past repeating itself.

Joon Jae takes her to the museum and shows her the picture of his past self, Dam Ryung. She’s surprised. Joon Jae quips he’s better looking. He tells her that Dam Ryung was a man the loved a mermaid. Joon Jae explains how a young mermaid saved a young Dam Ryung from drowning. He loved her and she loved him. On his wedding night he went into the sea to find the mermaid. She erased his memory so he wouldn’t try and find her again. But they met again when Dae Young captured her and Dam Ryung arrived at the village. Their connection restarts. Joon Jae thinks the dreadful parts of their past life. Sim Chung prompts him to explain what he fears will repeat. Joon Jae stares at the woman he loves, the woman he wants to protect, and remembers a happy moment from their past. Dam Ryung brings Se Hwa her favorite fruit and they watch the first snowfall together. Joon Jae looks at Sim Chung and decides a lie is kinder. He tells her that their past counterparts lived happily every after. She looks at him and smiles. She asks him why she feels sad as a tear falls.

Joon Jae takes her to the painted vase of them kissing. He says that they must have know they’d be together again in the future. Sim Chung doesn’t understand what Joon Jae is scared of. He hedges and says today’s world is different. He’s worried she’ll die. Sim Chung says as long as he stays by her side, she’ll live. Joon Jae pretends his heart is fickle and could change. That’s why he’s scared. Sim Chung stares at him. He stares at her. She wonders why he can hear her but she can’t hear him. Joon Jae says that hearing his heart isn’t necessary. He strides away.

Hmm, how do I feel about Joon Jae lying to Sim Chung. I’m not surprised but I am disappointed. Forearmed is forewarned.

Joon Jae’s mother calls the assistant’s number but the number is no longer in service. A car is watching her.

Sim Chung decides that erasing Joon Jae’s memory of yesterday will put him at ease again. He’s not interested. She presses him against the wall and tells him to trust her. He’s memorized by her. But he breaks the spell and literally runs away from her.

Tae O and Nam Doo watch them chase each other. Tae O sighs not wanting to see their giddy glee and goes to his room. Nam Doo steps away too.

Their playfulness was fun to watch and seemed authentic!

From her loft, Sim Chung tries to cajole Joon Jae into letting her erase only half a day of his memory. He refuses. He reminds her that she thought there were other fish in the sea besides him. She offers to erase that too.

She comes down the loft ladder. He offers to send her to a nice warm ocean and promises to visit often. She doesn’t like that. She suggests they cuddle together. She promises not to erase his memory. Joon Jae wants her near. They snuggle.

Cute!

Seo Hee can’t believe the Joon Jae’s mother was hiding in plain sight as Ahn Jin Joo’s maid. She directs her drive to take her there.

Ahn Jin Joo is happy to see her and asks if she’s agreed to forget how she behaved when she was drunk. Ahn Jin Joo calls for coffee. Ahn Jin Joo tells Seo Hee that she’s quitting. Joon Jae’s mother brings the coffee out. Seo Hee says her family enjoyed her cooking and wonder if she’d like to work for her. Joon Jae’s mother is blunt, she lived as if she were dead because she feared for Joon Jae’s safety. But that’s no longer a concern. Joon Jae’s mother tells Ahn Jin Joo that Seo Hee is the witch that stole her husband and she’s the first wife. Ahn Jin Joo is shocked.

Ahn Jin Joo calls a friend and begin to gossip about what just happened in her living room.

Seo Hee strides away livid that things didn’t go as she planned.

Joon Jae, Nam Doo, Detective Hong and his partner look at paperwork together. Joon Jae asks if Nam Do found Kang Ji Yeon (Seo Hoo’s original name). They discuss the two husband’s who died and other family members too. Nam Doo speculates that she changed her name. Nam Doo reveals that she went to the same high school as Joon Jae’s mother.

Seo Hoo guides Heo Il Joong (Joon Jae’s father) from the hospital into the waiting car. She introduces the driver as the new assistant. It’s Dae Young!

That surprised me.

Joon Jae’s mother tells Ahn Jin Joo that she’ll be leaving the household after dinner. Ahn Jin Joo bats her eyes and tells her to stay as if they were real sisters. She cooes that she loved the drama she witnessed today. Ahn Jin Joo declares she will help Joon Jae’s mother return to her rightful place next to Heo Il Joong. Joon Jae’s mother isn’t interested. Jin Joo declares she’ll help her anyhow. Why? Because having Joon Jae’s mother become powerful will help Jin Joo’s status.

Jin Joo goes to Cha Si A’s room. Jin Joo chides Si A for not telling her that the maid was Heo Il Joong’s first wife. That stuns Si A. She can’t believe the Joon Jae is Heo Il Joong’s son.

Si A calls Tae O and asks him to pick her up from a nightclub. He shakes his head but agrees. She titters that he’s not to get any ideas. He rolls his eyes.

As Tae O puts on his coat he tells Nam Doo that’s picking Si A up at the water club. Nam Doo wants to go too. Sim Chung wants to go too.

At the club the men are gobsmacked by Sim Chung’s short dress. Si A sees Nam Doo and Sim Chung and asks Tae O why he brought “the unwanted” with him. Ha! As Nam Doo dances he gets a call from Joon Jae who isn’t happy to learn Sim Chung is having fun without him.

When Joon Jae gets to the club, he sees Si A and Sim Chung having a dance off. Sim Chung isn’t above pushing Si A out of the way. Love it! Joon Jae literally drags Sim Chung off the dance floor. She doesn’t want to go.

As they wait for the rain to abate, Sim Chung says she can’t walk in the rain with him. Joon Jae brings boots and an umbrella. He tells her she can anything. He puts the boots on her and they walk arm in arm in the rain with the umbrella shielding them. Lovely!

Later Sim Chung tells the little girl, Yoo Na, that Joon Jae can hear her thoughts. We haven’t seen Yoo Na for 4 episodes. I wondered if we’d see her again. Sim Chung admits she likes that Joon Jae knows her thoughts. Now she can live a normal life. Yoo Na counsels that “normal” is easier said than done. The homeless lady joins them for a snack. Sim Chung admits even though she feels like a fake person, she deserves to be loved too. Yoo Na says the inside of someone is what matters, not the outside. They all agree. Sim Chung declares she’s decided tomorrow is her birthday. She invites them to the house for a birthday party.

The assistant’s wife leaves her husband’s side for a moment. Chi Hyeon enters the room. He asks if the assistant can answer his questions in the same manner he answered Joon Jae’s questions yesterday. Chi Hyeon says he overhead that Dae Young was the person that injured him. He asks if Dae Young is working with his mother. The assistant can’t hide his reaction. Chi Hyeon smiles and holds his hand. The assistant sees Chi Hyeon look at the life support monitor and the fear registers on his face. Chi Hyeon says that his mother is happy the assistant can’t talk. But Chi Hyeon is worried because his mind is functional. He worries the assistant will betray his mother. He removes the oxygen tube from the assistant’s face.

The assistant’s wife gets a call from Joon Jae’s mother. She gets to the point. Did Joon Jae leave the house and not study abroad. The assistant’s wife apologizes for lying about that. She thought it would upset her too much. The assistant’s wife shares that her husband is in the hospital and Joon Jae visited. She asks for her son’s phone number. The assistant’s wife says she’ll get her glasses and so she can read the phone’s small letters.

The assistant can’t breath. Chi Hyeon is freaking out. A man pulls him out of the room and into the stair. It’s Dae Young! Evil dad meet your evil son.

The assistant’s wife sees the medical team rushing into her husband’s room. They administer CPR. The assistant remembers Dam Ryung and how he said they’d meet again. The assistant remembers someone entering the room he was in to take a ledger from Dam Ryung. Wanna bet that was Chi Hyeon?

Chi Hyeon is driven away from the hospital by Dae Young. Chi Hyeon asks who he is. Dae Young says cutting off oxygen sets off an alarm. Dae Young says he’s lucky it was a shift change or he could have been caught. Chi Hyeon wants to know why he’s driving his father’s car. Dae Young tells him to keep quiet like his mother. Chi Hyeon yells that he doesn’t want a dangerous man around his mother. Dae Young yells back that he should stay quiet and accept his support.

Joon Jae’s mother gets a call from Sim Chung inviting her to her birthday party. Sim Chung explains that this is her first birthday party. Touched, Joon Jae’s mother agree to come and support her friend.

The house is a flurry of activity to get ready for the party. Nam Doo tells Joon Jae that it is crazy at the house. Joon Jae laughs and says he’ll be there soon. He leaves the florist’s shop with a lovely bouquet. Nam Doo is taken aback when the homeless woman arrives.

Joon Jae is happy carry a bouquet of flowers and a gift for the woman he loves. Could anyone else rock a PINK coat with a gray sweater and pants like Lee Min Ho?

Sim Chung meets Joon Jae’s mother as she walks to the house. Sim Chung is surprised Joon Jae’s mother brought food including her sea urchin seaweed soup. Joon Jae’s mother says the food was her son’s favorites. Sim Chung declares she feels reborn today. Joon Jae’s mother says she want’s to find what she’s looking for too.

Joon Jae sees Sim Chung walking with a woman from across the street. He smiles. Sim Chung doesn’t see him until they reach the cross walk. She waves. She tells Joon Jae’s mother that her boyfriend, Heo Joon Jae, is across the street. The name shocks his mother. She stares at Joon Jae. Tears fill her eyes. She tells Sim Chung her son has the same name. Sim Chung stuns his mother when she shares the Joon Jae once called himself Heracles and told her about Heracle’s mother. Flashback to Joon Jae and his mother sharing that story. Sim Chung says she’ll meet her son again. Joon Jae’s mother grabs Sim Chung’s hand for support. She looks across the street at the man she loves. She THINKS “Joon Jae, the legend is true. Those that get separated will meet again. They meet again and love. Congratulations. You now meet your mother.” She smiles. Joon Jae looks stunned. He looks at his mother. She looks at him. The crosswalk light turns green. They walk to each other. Lovely moment!

My thoughts

Joon Jae finally sees his mother again. I was surprised what an emotion packed moment that was. I was not overly fond of Joon Jae’s mother but she’s showed some moxy these last two episodes. What made that moment work was Sim Chung and Joon Jae’s emotional connection. It was perfection that Sim Chung used her thoughts to communicate to Joon Jae that his mother stood next to her. Sim Chung looked at Joon Jae with love brimming in her eyes. She knew this was a big moment for the man she loved. Joon Jae’s stunned expression was softened by the love of discovering the mother he thought he’d never see again.

Side characters notes. Nam Doo happiness at taking Sim Chung to the dance club was fun. Tae O got the pickup call from a drunk Si A and he felt obligated to help. Ah Jin Joo’s joy at realizing that Joon Jae’s mother was actually a once powerful woman was perfect. Si A’s horror when Jin Joo told her that was fun to watch. I loved how Si A and Sim Chung got physical while dancing together.

On the evil side of the house, Dae Young got Chi Hyeon out of the hospital before he was discovered tampering with the assistant’s oxygen. Does Dae Young know that Chi Hyeon is his son? I’m over Chi Hyeon going instant evil, it is the writer’s prerogative. Chi Hyeon was menacing as he stood over the helpless assistant. How many times have we seen son’s willing to cover up their mother’s evil ways? It’s a drama standard. I did enjoy Joon Jae’s mother telling Seo Hee off. Her irritation was nice to see. It was bold for Seo Hee to bring Dae Young as her husband’s new assistant. Team Evil should clasp hands and yell “evil powers activate!”

Dam Ryung / Joon Jae (Lee Min Ho) lied to Sim Chung that their past counterparts lived happily ever after. I wasn’t thrilled with the choice but it is the writer’s prerogative. Joon Jae could argue he’ll make their dream of happily ever after come true. Lee Min Ho and Gianna Jun have created a couple I care about. I want this couple to overcome the three evil forces in their lives. Will they? We’ve got 5 episodes to go. Team Evil will make a concerted effort to hurt our couple, his mother and his father. Is happily ever after a possibility for all?

Sim Chung (Gianna Jun) got over Joon Jae’s omission quickly. And why not? We are down to the final 5 episodes and I don’t want our couple bickering about this item. Gianna Jung makes Sim Chung a breathe of fresh air in every scene. It was nice to see the little girl, Yoo Na, the homeless woman, and Joon Jae’s mother all come together to support their friend Sim Chung. She’s a lovely person. Who couldn’t help but love Sim Chung?

The 9th song of the OST is “Day By Day”by Park Yoon Ha.

Legend of the Blue Sea Episode 15

Advertisements

After the intensity of ep14, this episode returns to the show’s more usual light-hearted tone with more sweetness and fun between Joon Jae and Sim Chung while still moving several pieces ahead, the most significant development of all being Joon Jae finally meeting his mum.

I’ve always felt that the wiser choice for Joon Jae would just be to come clean to Sim Chung about what the dream is all about and how it’d end, so that the both of them can work together to avoid a repeat of the ending. I’m wondering if Sim Chung is completely ignorant about what happened, because we did see her in episode 1 swimming at the bottom of the ocean and picking up the jade bangle. Instead, Joon Jae decides to tell her the story between Dam Ryung and Sae Wa, but changing it to a happy ending instead. Perhaps it’s also his way of changing the past, by not acknowledging it. It could also be part of his general protectiveness towards Sim Chung, which also bothers me slightly because we know that Sim Chung, unlike Sae Wa, is perfectly able to protect herself, particularly against physical threats.

While I did not particularly like Joon Jae hiding the sad ending from Sim Chung, what I enjoyed was how Sim Chung responded to the realisation that Joon Jae has known all along about her mermaid identity. One of her fears has always been that he’d reject her and send her back once he knew she was different. Her realisation that he accepts her and values her makes her feel completely at home in this world. This is reinforced later by his assurance to her that he will ensure she can do normal things, just like anybody else in this world. It feels so much like a new lease of life that Sim Chung decides to throw a birthday party for herself, inviting Yoona and her homeless friend along. She also decides to invite Joon Jae’s mum, who initially declines, but agrees once she realises that Sim Chung has no parents and that this is her first birthday party.

The bond between Sim Chung and Joon Jae’s mum felt a little forced initially, but I like how it has developed into something such a simple, heartwarming friendship. When Joon Jae’s mum meets Sim Chung, she too tells Sim Chung that she’s planning on a new start, to look for the person she wants to find and say what she wants. I do wonder though why she’s just been targeting So Hee and not looking for her husband, because wouldn’t she be even more disappointed with him given that he allowed his own son to run away and didn’t inform her. Nonetheless, I liked how she put Soo Hee in her place when she came to Jin Joo’s household and let the whole truth out of the bag.

Jin Joo’s reaction when finding out the truth is so hilarious and perfectly in character! She responds with so much excitement because her home has now become the site of where history unfolds and asks Joon Jae’s mum to stay on in the place, even if she doesn’t want to work for her anymore. Shi Ah is also informed of this new revelation, which then makes her sink even deeper into desperation because she realises Joon Jae is connected to the Chairman of a huge company.

On the dad side of things, Soo Hee has become even bolder and has now even enlisted Dae Young to become the chauffeur of the family. Chi Hyun sinks even deeper into the dark side and pulls ajusshi’s oxygen tubes, because he realises that ajusshi knows about his mum’s connections to Dae Young. Chi Hyun seems to have a moment of regret and awakening when we see him fumble to put back the oxygen tubes, but is taken away by Dae Young who tells him not to destroy the plan and just sit back while things fall in place. Well, who would blame Chi Hyun for wanting to take action? Whatever Dae Young’s plan is, he’s certainly taking ages to act on it. He hasn’t even acted on his plan all the way in the first few episodes to kill Joon Jae. Dae Young’s specialisation seems to be lurking around in cars, but not taking any action. Our present day villains just aren’t very competent, though I am keen to find out who Dam Ryung’s friend saw in the room, wearing the jade bangle. I hope the show doesn’t hold out for too long in revealing the truth to us and that the answer will be a satisfying one.

The episode ends with Joon Jae and his mum finally meeting, at both sides of the road and walking towards each other, both in tears. While we’ve taken longer than I’ve preferred for this reunion to happen, the way it has been set up has ultimately been satisfying, with Sim Chung being the one to make the reunion happen and communicating it to him telepathically from across the road, that the legend of the tower was right, that those who parted there would meet again. With one legend coming to pass, what remains to be seen is how the legend involving our mermaid will unfold. While that story had a tragic ending in the Joseon era, the overarching message of that legend is that whatever happens, the boy who loved the mermaid will always fulfil his promise to find the mermaid and protect her. I truly hope that the sense of danger to our mermaid becomes clearer in the coming episodes, because what their romance needs now is a rising-up against the odds storyline to elevate it to something truly legendary.

The Legend of the Blue Sea Episode 15 Recap: Shim Chung Becomes Heo Joon Jae’s Instrument to Meet his Mother – Shibuni Reiki Montreal

In The Legend of the Blue Sea episode 15, Shim Chung (Jun Ji-Hyun) explained in her thoughts what could happen to her if Heo Joon Jae (Lee Min Ho) dies. That was why in episode 14 she did not want to promise that she’d go on living if he died.

Heo Joon Jae then concluded that he’d be reason that she’s going to die in the end. With this he had a dilemma of sending the mermaid back to the sea. But he showed her to the museum and made up a story of their past lives, which ended happily.

Meanwhile, Heo Joon Jae’s mother is visited by his stepmother in the pretext of seeing the owner of the house. But his mother revealed that she was the first wife that got kicked by the second one. Because of it, her employer offered her to stay there without having to work.

On the other hand Heo Joon Jae’s father already got out of the hospital. The new driver turned out to be Ma Dae Young.

At night, Cha Si-Ah asked Tae Oh to pick her up at the club. When Jo Nam Doo asked him where he’d go, he wanted to come along, so did Shim Chung. The three of them went there and met Cha Si-Ah, to the latter’s disappointment. Later, Heo Joon Jae was informed of his girlfriend’s whereabouts. He came after them and took Shim Chung out of the club, into the rain.

Meanwhile, Chi Hyeon talked to Chief Nam, the driver that was supposed to be killed by Ma Dae Young. He took the latter’s oxygen, which set off the alarm. However, Ma Dae Young got him out of trouble, and the driver lost his heartbeat when the doctors arrived.

Then Shim Chung met her friends, little Yoo Na and the homeless woman. She thought to have her own birthday party the next day. She even invited Heo Joon Jae’s mother to come.

She met his mother while her other visitors arrived at Heo Joon Jae’s home. Therefore, the last scene of The Legend of the Blue Sea episode 15 showed that he is about to meet his mother after a long time of searching for her.

Legend of the Blue Sea: Episode 15 Recap

Oops! This image does not follow our content guidelines. To continue publishing, please remove it or upload a different image. Joon-jae hears Chung think to herself that she’ll die on land without him, that her heart will stop beating and harden without his love, and he asks, terrified, “Why would you die?!” She’s more concerned with how he heard her thoughts, and demands to know how long he’s been able to hear her true voice. He finally admits that he recovered his memories: “The crazy guy who shielded you with an umbrella in the rain, the player who held your hand when you were alone, the wacko who made you ramyun—they’re all me. And the mermaid who saved me in the ocean and erased my memories is you.” They’re both shell-shocked for different reasons, and he asks again if it’s true that her heart will stop and she’ll die without him. She confirms it: “This isn’t my world. The moment I gave up water and came to land, I had a heart that can’t beat without you.” She tells him to stop asking her to make promises about living happily after he’s gone, because that’s not a promise she can keep: “If you disappear, I disappear too.” The truth finally sinks in and Joon-jae recalls his shrink Professor Jin calling theirs a bad fate, where loving each other would lead to their deaths. He mutters, “Ma Dae-young wasn’t the problem… I could be the one to kill you.” She tries to argue and reaches out to touch him, but he backs away from her. Aw, no! Don’t do that! She looks heartbroken as she lowers her hand. Chung sobs up in her room, the floor littered with pearls around her. The wailing is so loud that Nam-doo comes out to the terrace to ask Joon-jae if they fought very badly, and he suggests that if Joon-jae can’t take responsibility for her till the end, he might as well cut her loose now. Joon-jae snaps at that and says he hasn’t even done anything for her yet, and everyone wants him to end things, thinking of Professor Jin’s advice to let her go. Joon-jae says that it may have been Chung’s greed that brought her all the way here in search of him, but it’s now his own greed that’s keeping him from sending her away. He knows he’s being greedy, he says, but he keeps not wanting to hear the reasons why he should send her away, and admits to wanting excuses to keep her around. Nam-doo has no idea what he’s blabbering on about, but says he has a niggling feeling that Chung owes him a debt for some reason, though he can’t remember what it is. Joon-jae thwacks him on the back of the head again just in case, to prevent any sudden memory recovery. After a good cry, Chung thinks back to the moment Joon-jae began hearing her thoughts, now understanding all the reactions he seemed to be having to her interior monologues. Then it occurs to her that he knew she was a mermaid when he ran around saving her from water at the jjimjilbang, and that he could hear all her thoughts when he kissed her and quieted her nerves. She wonders now what it could mean, and opens her door to find Joon-jae standing down below just staring up at her closed door. She comes down and tells him about being found out by Nam-doo earlier today, and the way he became a different person and wanted to sell her out the instant he knew that she was a mermaid. Joon-jae looks like he wants to go punch Nam-doo’s lights out, but Chung asks what he thought when he found out—was he afraid, or does he dislike her?

Legend of the Blue Sea: Episode 15 OR….Girl Fight, Tonight!!

As our daydream continues, Joon Jae and Shim Cheong face each other on the patio. In her mind, Shim Cheong explains why she cannot make Joon Jae the promise that he asks for. He hears every word and he asks her to repeat what she was just thinking. She asks him if he is able to hear her voice and he counters, demanding to have his question answered. Neither one is willing to give way until Joon Jae admits that he has been able to hear her voice since the beginning. He remembers everything. He knows what she is. He remembers all of Spain and that he is the man from all her stories. Having given her the answer she wanted he asks his question again. She explains that her heart beats only for him and without him, her heart will turn to stone and stop beating. Her very existence depends entirely on him. The information crushes them both and he distances himself from her, not really knowing what to do from here.

Shim Cheong goes to her room and cries her eyes out, leaving a trail of pearls on the carpet and in the ever-filling bowl by her bed. Nam Doo approaches Joon Jae, who is staring into space out on the cold patio. He asks if the two of them had a fight. Joon Jae tells Nam Doo that he feels he needs to send her away but he keeps making excuses not to. Nam Doo tries again to recall what he’s forgotten and Joon Jae smacks him in the back of the head for his trouble.

Joon Jae makes his way to his room where he can hear Shim Cheong’s thoughts. She is recalling all of the previous situations where Joon Jae protected her from having her secret revealed. She comes down from her room and tells Joon Jae that Nam Doo caught her swimming. She also confesses that she erased his memory of the event. She asks Joon Jae if he was scared when he found out what she was. He tells her that he wasn’t and she is relieved to hear it. She says that having him hate her is the scariest thing she can think of. He begins to tell her what frightens him the most but he stops short.

Joon Jae takes Shim Cheong to the museum to show her what he knows and why. He leads her to the exhibit and the stunning painting of Dam Ryeong. He explains that he is a man who fell in love with a mermaid. He tells her Dam Ryeong’s story and how he drowned as a child and was saved by the mermaid. As they grew, they fell in love but the young man was forced to marry. On his wedding night, he ran to the ocean so that he could meet the mermaid again. She knew that he was in pain and so she erased his memory of her so that he could live his life without pain. They met again later and the man remembered everything. He saved the mermaid from those that would exploit her and intended to live his life with her. Shim Cheong wants to know the rest of the story and Joon Jae lies. He creates a happy ending in his head. He tells Shim Cheong that the two lived together happily and created a good life filled with children and happiness. Shim Cheong doesn’t understand why such a happy story would be something that Joon Jae would be fearful of repeating. He shows her the vase and supposes that Dam Ryeong and the mermaid must have also dreamed of them.

Yoo Ran makes a call to Mr. Nam’s wife but it goes to voicemail. She is unaware that there is someone watching her every move. At Joon Jae’s, Shim Cheong tells Joon Jae that it might be a good idea to erase his memories from yesterday so that he won’t feel burdened. He isn’t crazy about the idea and she eventually has to corner him. Just as she is about to kiss him, he breaks free and runs from the room. They chase one another around the apartment as Nam Doo and Tae Oh watch. Later that night, Shim Cheong is still on about erasing his memory, only now she thinks maybe a few days or even a week would be better. He’s bundled himself like a burrito to keep her from touching him but eventually her cute pouting gets her an invitation to snuggle, which she quickly accepts, with the promise that she won’t erase anything.

The next day Seo Hee shows up at Jin Joo’s house. She is there to gloat at Yoo Ran. Seo Hee tells Jin Joo that she forgives her for her drunken tirade. Jin Joo calls to the kitchen for coffee and Yoo Ran soon appears with a tray for the two ladies. Seo Hee calls her “ahjummah” and compliments her on her cooking. Yoo Ran freezes when Seo Hee tells her that she can come and work in her home. It was meant to insult her but Yoo Ran turns and lets Seo Hee have it. She tells Jin Joo that the woman who was kicked out of her house by a husband-stealing bitch is her. She also lets her know that the husband-stealing bitch is Seo Hee. Jin Joo excuses herself and can barely contain her glee as she makes a phone call to spill the biggest piece of “historic” gossip she’s ever witnessed.

Joon Jae and Nam Doo meet with the detectives. They discuss their efforts to locate Kang Ji Hyun. Nam Doo has searched for her but it seems that anyone that might be able to tell them her whereabouts is dead. He did find one interesting piece of information. Kang Ji Hyun is from Jecheon and she went to the same high school as Joon Jae’s mother.

Seo Hee goes to the hospital to pick up Il Joong. He has been discharged but his eyesight is still very bad. She introduces him to their driver and says that he will be handling things for Il Joong while Mr. Nam is still hospitalized. The man driving the car is none other than Dae Young. At Jin Joo’s house Yoo Ran prepares the table for dinner. Jin Joo asks her to sit down and then calls Yoo Ran “Unnie”. Now that she knows of another way to get at Il Joong’s money she is going to help Yoo Ran to return to her rightful place in the Heo household. Later, Jin Joo explains to Si Ah who Yoo Ran really is and that they are going to be taking care of her from now on. Si Ah is completely frustrated by her circumstances.

Tae Oh is gaming in his room when he receives a call from Si Ah. She is at the club and she needs him to come and get her. Tae Oh puts on his coat and Nam Doo asks where he is off to. When he finds out that Tae Oh is headed to the club, a simple pick up becomes a club night out. Once they arrive at the club, Si Ah is annoyed to find they have brought Shim Cheong with them. Si Ah slams back another shot as Nam Doo makes it clear that they are there to dance. Nam Doo makes a beeline for the dance floor and begins flirting. His phone rings. It is Joon Jae. He tells Joon Jae that they are at the club and Shim Cheong is with them.

Before we know what’s happening, we find ourselves in the middle of a dance battle girl fight on the enormous dance floor. Shim Cheong and Si Ah dance around one another as a gob smacked Tae Oh and very happy Nam Doo look on. Shim Cheong is clearly winning, much to Si Ah’s consternation. Si Ah grabs Tae Oh’s beer and takes a big swig and then jumps back into the middle of the pulsing crowd. Joon Jae arrives at the club and Si Ah greets him while attempting to look virginal but Joon Jae tells her to have a good time with Nam Doo and Tae Oh. He immediately turns his attention to Shim Cheong. Joon Jae physically removes Shim Cheong from the club in spite of the fact that she is enjoying herself. Si Ah can do nothing but throw dirty looks after the quickly exiting pair.

Outside the club, Joon Jae and Shim Cheong stand together as rain pours from the sky. Shim Cheong tells Joon Jae that she cannot walk in the rain with him. He tells her to wait and then returns with a pair of rain boots and a large umbrella. He helps her with her shoes and then draws her close as the venture out into the rain. They both smile at the simple pleasure of cuddling close and walking together in the rain.

Later, Shim Cheong meets up with little Yoo Na at the convenience store. She asks Yoo Na how she is able to hear Shim Cheong’s thoughts and also tells her that Joon Jae can do the same thing. Shim Cheong’s homeless friend (who’s character name I cannot find anywhere. Help! Anyone??) arrives at the convenience store to join the girls in their semi-al fresco meal. The homeless woman points out all of the women running in the rain with their “expensive” handbags over their heads. “Those bags” she says “are knock-offs”. She then points to the one woman who is carrying her bag underneath her coat as if it were an “ancestral tablet”. “That one is real.” She makes the point that although the bags may look the same, their owners who know the truth about their value treat them differently. It is an astute observation that is mostly lost on Shim Cheong. She feels that even though the owner of the bag knows that it’s not the real deal, they should be happy and treat the bag well. Little Yoo Na understands Shim Cheong and basically repeats “don’t judge a book by its cover”. Shim Cheong says that even though she knows she doesn’t quite belong, she is going to do things as normally as possible. In the vein, she is going to have a birthday party. Since she doesn’t know her real birthdate, she has decided that tomorrow is as good a date as any. She invites both of the ladies to her party with a smile.

Mr. Nam’s hospital room door opens and a fuzzy figure approaches his bed. It is Chi Hyeon. He seems overly friendly. He tells Mr. Nam that he saw him with Joon Jae and he wonders if he would be able to answer his questions too. His primary question concerns his mother and her association with Dae Young. Mr. Nam’s eyes grow wide and he cannot hide his fear. He is unable to speak or cry out as Chi Hyeon pulls the oxygen tube from his face, setting off alarms.

Mr. Nam’s wife wanders the halls of the hospital. She has received a phone call from Yoo Ran. She is happy to hear from her but must admit that she has lied to her in the past about Joon Jae and his whereabouts. She admits that Joon Jae has visited her husband several times in the hospital. Yoo Ran asks for his phone number and she agrees to provide it but she must first run back upstairs to get her glasses.

In Mr. Nam’s room, the machines are going crazy and Chi Hyeon searches desperately for a way to turn them off. A hand grabs his shoulder and pulls him from the room and into the stairwell. It is Dae Young. Mrs. Nam is walking back to her husband’s room when she notices several doctors and nurses going into his room. She screams and runs to his room to find the medical team performing CPR on her husband. She is overcome with panic and she faints, dropping her phone. As Mr. Nam is dying he remembers his past life with Dam Ryeong and his promise to protect him. He remembers limping back into the magistrate’s office and opening a secret panel in the wall. Hearing someone approach he hides himself in the hidden room and watches as a man with a ring reaches for a book on the magistrate’s desk.

Chi Hyeon is taken away from the hospital by Dae Young. He is outraged that a fugitive like Dae Young is so close to his mother. He begins to shout his outrage but is quickly silenced by Dae Young who tells him to keep his mouth shut and not disturb a table that has already been set for him. Chi Hyeon has no idea that the man in the front seat is his father. At least he comes by his bi-polar psychosis honestly.

Shim Cheong calls Yoo Ran and invites her to the birthday party. At first Yoo Ran declines but then finds out that it is the first time that Shim Cheong has had a birthday. She agrees to attend and the fact that Shim Cheong doesn’t have parents also helped her to change her mind about attending. The next day delivery bikes arrive with party supplies and food. Shim Cheong flits about the house, preparing as her guests arrive. Her homeless friend arrives with a bag of fish, which she passes off to a very confused Nam Doo. She makes herself comfortable on the couch across from little Yoo Na.

Yoo Ran’s phone rings and it is Shim Cheong. She tells her that she is on her way but no sooner do the words leave her mouth than she finds Shim Cheong next to her. The two women walk arm in arm and chat happily. Joon Jae has stopped at a florist just down the street and picked up a small bouquet of flowers. As he heads for home he sees Shim Cheong walking on the other side of the street. He waits at the cross walk and when Shim Cheong sees him and waves excitedly at him. Yoo Ran asks who he is and Shim Cheong tells him that he is her boyfriend. She shouts his name and Yoo Ran can scarcely breathe. She looks across the busy intersection almost in a trance and tells Shim Cheong that her sons name is Joon Jae. Shim Cheong simply says “Heracles Lighthouse” and Yoo Ran looks as if her legs will disappear from underneath her. She remembers telling her son the story about the lighthouse. Shim Cheong finishes the story about meeting those you have been separated from. Shim Cheong turns to Joon Jae and thinks her congratulations to him and tells him that today he meets his mother. Now it is Joon Jae who looks as though his legs will disappear. The crossing light changes and mother and son take slow and careful steps towards one another.

REVIEW

Another solid episode, although the club scene was completely unnecessary. However unnecessary it might have been, I loved it to bits. Seeing everyone in a club environment and how it changed their personalities was fun to watch. The only person who remained exactly the same was sweet Tae Oh. I really hope that he knows more than what he’s letting on.

I’m a bit trepidatious about this giant crosswalk between Joon Jae and his mother. Koreans love hitting people with cars in their dramas. Especially when that person is super important to the main character or has some information that could answer several huge questions for the drama plotline. They are crossing with the light but that won’t stop and impatient taxi from running the light and turning Mom into squashed squirrel. (No seriously, ask me about any cab ride in Korea.)

So how are you feeling about the way things are shaping up?? How desperate do you think Si Ah will be to have Joon Jae? Do you think she will do anything crazy? What will Chi Hyeon do when he finds out that his father is a psychopathic killer? What about Nam Doo? He is sure to remember his encounter with Shim Cheong and when he does what do you think he will do? Let me know in the comments below.

Legend of the Blue Sea Recap: Episode 14 & 15

There was a lot of great plot movement this week! Not that I don’t love watching our OTP (one true pairing) be awesome but when you have twenty episodes it is nice when other things begin to happen as well. So come join us as we discuss running plotline jokes, ridiculous fated meetings, and everything else that happens in Ep 14 & 15.

A Little Too Convenient

KMUSE: OK, I can forgive the random moments of fated meetings since that is just a part of watching a kdrama. But seeing Evil Killer just happen to open the door and overhear Joon Jae’s discussion on his past life was just too ridiculous to believe.

And while I am on the topic of our big bad serial killer…. am I the only one that is confused over his personality? Sometimes he seems super evil wanting to kill people, but other times we get a confused and scared vibe. It just doesn’t work for me. I need him to totally commit to being a bad guy with a hammer fetish or just a sidekick villain to his black widow girlfriend. At least the historical version had a set focus of greed and revenge that didn’t deviate.

Drama Geek: Lazy writing through and through. And I think what the writer is trying to do is show that he really isn’t as bad as everyone thinks and he is a puppet, but it’s just weird storytelling and acting.

CLKYTTA: I hope they aren’t trying to give him a redeeming angle. He’s a bad guy, make him a bad guy.

Jennie: I still can’t see past my favorite dad in the Reply series.

Ongoing Jokes

There have been several ongoing side plots that are mostly humorous filler. For the most part, we have not focused on them so I think it is time to do a little chat about the filler and whether it is working for us.

The Cop & The Conman

Drama Geek: It was so fun this week that Joon Jae remembered what they were to each other in their past lives. By the end of this drama, they will totally be partners and solving mysteries together.

KMUSE: I think I have to agree with DramaGeek previous comment. I would love to watch a show with these two solving crimes and cracking jokes. Their connection is just so adorable and it makes me happy to see it crossed time to be established again in modern times.

CLKYTTA: Yep, they are destined to work together. These guys have good chemistry together and I think the whole team will work together. I want a spin off!

Jennie: I love how he walked in there and started bossing everyone around. Such a great friendship budding here. I think Joon Jae will become a cop in the end or at least a CI.

2nd Lead & Mom

KMUSE: I have heard some rumblings about how selfish the 2nd lead girl is since she doesn’t just tell Joon Jae about his mom. Personally, I see it as a running joke and I don’t take it to heart. 2nd Lead Girl has always been just a fluff character and shallow to the nth degree. There is no chance that she will be truly evil so having her be part of these funny side plots fits.

Wait…. I just watched 15 and it stops being funny and just super selfish and annoying. Oh 2nd lead girl, I expected more from you….kind of.

Drama Geek: I think the rumblings were from me. LOL. She cares zero about Joon Jae. If she did, she wouldn’t care how bad she looked, she’d tell him right away. And if the last scene of 15 ends up with either our mom or son hit by a Truck of Doom, then I’m going to purpose we hog tie her and leave her for the birds.

CLKYTTA: Rubs hands together in glee! Oh the joy of knowing that 2nd lead irritating girl has just realized that she’s mistreated Joon Jae’s precious Mama! This girl irritates me so much and I know she is only going to cause more problems.

Jennie: I love how she’s totally falling for Tae Ho without realizing it, too. She is so clueless. Personally, I think Tae Ho is way too good for her.

Tae Ho’s in Love

KMUSE: Tae Ho is all that is adorable. His cute red ears can be on my TV anytime. While I do find 2nd Lead Girl’s misconception of his undying love amusing, I think I am ready for us to move on. The joke has run its course in my opinion.

Dramarookie: Actually, I still get a kick out of the misunderstanding. His barely restrained eye rolling, or horror that he accidentally answered her phone call cracks me up.

Drama Geek: This guy is just so adorable and I want him to get speaking parts. Please drama gods, in 2017 can he please do a web drama where he’s the lead, or be a really fun BFF to the lead or something in a bigger show?

CLKYTTA: I love this guy. His character is adorable and he’s got so much potential. He’s the perfect boy next door. He can blush, he’s got a great smile, and someone needs to totally make bank on that because girls like the boy next door.

Jennie: I’ve been crazy about him ever since Big, so I agree with Drama Geek. Please let him talk more!! His secret crush is really cute, though. I felt soo bad for him in ep. 15.

A Titanic Style Date

KMUSE: Aw. Joon Jae and Cheong’s date was so flipping adorable. The fact that Joon Jae took Cheong to see Titanic just so he could make a point about her not dying if he died was epic. Kudos for thinking of the perfect object lesson to try and get his point across.

Drama Geek: Do they really still show this movie in theaters in Korea? That aside, I loved their date. So cute. And her dress. But I think I’m in love with her whole wardrobe for this show. (KMUSE: I think it is the 20th anniversary or something like that. I remember it was playing in Portland recently for a week or two.)

CLKYTTA: I almost died laughing on this part. I wanted her to yell out that there was room for two on that raft! Her outfit was fabulous, JJH could literally wear a trash bag and look like a million dollars though.

Dramarookie: I must be too conservative. I don’t care if it IS the glamorous Jeon Ji Hyun wearing them, the red and white stripes remind me of clown pants. (KMUSE: *whispers* me too)

Jennie: Red striped pants aside, I’m loving her wardobe, too. I could never wear the stuff she wears though. Also, I hope that theater worker left that job and became stinking rich.

Who’s The Big Bad?

KMUSE: I don’t mind the stepbrother being the big bad of the show. I just wish they had developed the character a bit better so it didn’t feel like narrative whiplash. You can’t just give a guy an evil updo and expect us to believe he went from wanna-be good son to crazy killer overnight.

Drama Geek: Where is Shin Sung Rok when you need him? Since this is the same writer as My Love From Another Star, it’s really hard to not compare the bad guys. There are still running jokes about- if anyone asks how your health is you should run away as fast as you can. Not only was Sung Rok’s performance stellar, the character was well written and you knew you were scared of him from the moment he stepped on screen. The stepbrother’s character is so muddy. And I about choked on my tea the moment he showed up with the updo and possibly a smidge of eyeliner. Wardrobe changes do not equal character development.

CLKYTTA: I called it! I called it! An updo and some eyeliner and voila! we got us a villain!

Memory Wipe Take 2 & 3

KMUSE: Cheong can be hella scary when she wants to be. I totally loved the scary music as she moved in to wipe Con Bestie’s memories of her mermaid state. She truly is a force to be reckoned with.

Drama Geek: I was so excited that she took this situation in her own hands and dealt with the problem. And it was fun seeing Con Bestie get his comeuppance. I would have let him stub his toe a few more times than she did.

CLKYTTA: We knew Con Bestie would sell her down the river if he found out the truth, and I’m so glad she did what she did. I love that our mermaid will protect herself and not wait for a man to save her.

Dramarookie: This guy is played for comedy one minute, and creepin me out the next. Let’s not forget he took a teenage genius and turned him into a conman that he’s been living off of for a long time. He better get a bigger comeuppance than a stubbed toe before this show is over!

Jennie: I honestly wonder if he could be the Big Bad..with the unfleshed-out side characters, it could be anyone.

She Knows He Knows

Drama Geek: I’m really glad we didn’t drag this out too long. It was adorable that he could hear her, and she didn’t know, but everything is always better when a couple is on the same page. And the purposed memory wipe was hilarious with her slamming him up against the wall. I’m glad she didn’t though.

CLKYTTA: I really felt like this was well done. I really liked how it all came to a climax when he realized that their fates were tied. He stopped pretending and started demanding answers and it was nice to see them talk about it head on. Once it was all out in the open it was fun to watch them play as she was threatening to wipe his memory.

KMUSE: I cracked up when Joon Jae was trying to decide if getting some smooches was worth chancing a memory swipe. Boys will be boys.

Dramarookie: We’ve still got five episodes. How awesome would it be if she started hearing Joon Jae’s thoughts, too. Isn’t love a two-way street?

Jennie: The role-reversal of both the wall and sleeping holding hands thing was great. Only this character could pull it off, though.

Confrontation

KMUSE: I actually enjoyed the confrontation. Sure the reason Real Mom left her house was totally stupid but I enjoyed Black Widow not getting the reaction she wanted. Not to mention the flaky mom is cracking me up with her expressions during the fight.

Drama Geek: I’m not sure I care… I just want Joon Jae and his mom to find each other.

CLKYTTA: I love, love, love Elizabeth’s Mom. She’s so real, she’s a social climber, but she’s also got a little bit of heart. It’s like Real Housewives Korea as she gets on her phone tree to ruin Evil Stepmom’s reputation. I also loved how Joon Jae’s Mom is now her “Unni”.

Jennie: I love her for starting the gossip train right away. Someone needs to ax evil step-mom

The Family That Kills Together Stays Together?

Drama Geek: I’m sure we’ve all guessed who the baby daddy is. It’s good that he cares enough about his son to teach him how to kill and get away with it. Oh, and glasses equal non fugitive on the run??? I guess if it works for Superman.

KMUSE: Evil Stepbrother is not the brightest killer in the family. I guess when you have parents that are not hands on things will fall through the cracks.

CLKYTTA: Moving on, this part bores me. Evil Stepbrother trying to act like he has no control over his life and Bad Reply Dad trying to be all Daddish. Eww.

Jennie: Yeah, this scene gave me the hebbie-jibbies. It didn’t work. If it wasn’t for the OTP, I wouldn’t be hanging on.

Its My Birthday

Drama Geek: I wonder why mermaids don’t know when they’re born. It probably has something to do with no parents. Anyway, I thought it was so cute that she just decided to throw a party for herself and that she’s amassed a gaggle of friends to invite over. Also, the polka dot outfit is to DIE for.

CLKYTTA: I loved that she invited all of her friends and is throwing her own party. Can we talk about Joon Jae’s pink coat? Never in a million years would I have thought a pink coat was sexy. It’s like one big happy family, we’ve got Mom, weird brothers, baby sister, and the crazy aunt. I like it!

KMUSE: Joon Jae’s pink coat and gray clothes underneath (Can’t believe I am saying this but even the turtleneck) are crazy attractive. Love that they matched the flower bouquet and the little girl in the party hat is just adorable. This party makes me happy.

Jennie: I think I need to invite an eight year old and a homeless person to my next birthday. They sure make it exciting.

Reunited…….With The Truck of Doom?

Drama Geek: As a drama viewer we are trained to get nervous when we see a crosswalk. Especially if there are two people who are reuniting on either end. This can’t end well, can it? Narratively, I’m not sure what purpose having his mom die or end up in the hospital would serve. On the other side, I could see Cheong save the mother and she ends up in the hospital. Or of course, Joon Jae. Personally, I really hope we can circumvent the trope and all go back and eat cake and ice cream.

CLKYTTA: Please let this not be a TOD. I want this to be a satisfying reunion, but we all know something bad has to happen. I’m impatiently waiting for next week.

KMUSE: I will be so pissed off if this ends up with any of the three in a coma at the hospital. Sure we need something to push Joon Jae to fight his psycho step-family but does it have to be at the expense of a cute reunion scene?

Jennie: I will curse and throw things if it ends up that way. Can’t we change the crosswalk trope to the one in King of High School where he gives her the best kiss ever. *sigh*

Our Thoughts:

Drama Geek: I know I sound like a broken record each week, but I’m really here for the OTP and that’s is about it. Oh, and Cheong’s outfits and Tae Ho’s smiles. Let’s see if that can continue delighting me for 5 more episodes.

CLKYTTA: I’m with Drama Geek, it’s all about the OTP and the adorable puppy. I do have to say that the dance off scene this week was epic, but I am really tired of 2nd lead girl.

KMUSE: I also agree. The OTP is the #1 draw…. and maybe Tae Oh who has stolen my Ahjumma heart. But other than that it is just an OK plot.

Jennie: OTP! OTP! As long as I keep getting feels and a good laugh, I’m happy.

Thanks for joining us for another discussion of Legend of the Blue Sea. We are getting closer to the end so I look forward to how everything is going to be resolved.
