Who is Lillian Peck in Apex Legends?

Lillian Peck is a name that was mostly attached to the past in Apex Legends lore. Her introduction in the lore is fairly recent, but she lived well before the time of most Apex‘s characters—until Horizon arrived, at least.

Horizon’s addition to the game brought back a treasure trove of information about the floating city of Olympus. That’s when Peck’s name first surfaced, but the story arc leading to season 11 brought her back to the spotlight.

Who was Lillian Peck?

Screengrab via PlayApex

Lillian Peck was a billionaire humanitarian who built Olympus in 2640, nearly a century before the events of Apex. She wanted to turn the floating city into a safe haven for people of all different socio-economic backgrounds, where they all could work and learn together. Its creation brought a series of technological advances to the Outlands.

Science and research thrived on Olympus, but a group of scientists discovered that the Outlands were on the brink of a devastating energy crisis that would wipe out the resources in the region in less than 20 years. Peck helped find a solution to the energy crisis with the help from one of her oldest friends, Dr. Mary Somers—the same Dr. Somers who would become Horizon.

Somers and Peck were close—Peck was even Newton’s godmother, according to the season seven loading screen “Crisis to Avert.” The two worked together to save the Outlands from the energy crisis, but mentions to Peck are scarce—if not inexistent—after Horizon disappeared.

Peck resurfaced during the season 10 Twitter comic, appearing in a flashback to Horizon. The legend believed Ash was Peck and “waking her up” would be the key to reuniting with her son.

Why did Horizon think Ash was Lillian Peck?

Peck appeared to Horizon in a dream, telling the legend all she had to do was “wake me up.” Horizon believed it referred to Ash, and she asked Pathfinder about the simulacrum.

In season five, the legends reassembled Ash at Hammond Robotics’ behest. The company had interest in some codes inside her memory, Pathfinder explained. Hammond took the Olympus access codes and left Ash in a dumpster, the MRVN told Horizon.

“The Olympus access codes? That cannae be,” she says. “Only Lillian Peck knew ’em.”

With Ash having the Olympus codes and Peck presumably being the only person who knew them, Horizon believed Peck being Ash wasn’t a far cry. When she “woke up” the simulacrum, however, the legend discovered it was actually Dr. Reid, the assistant who left her stranded in space.

Peck hasn’t appeared since the story, but the comic did give fans a first official look at her appearance. This doesn’t necessarily mean we’ve seen the last of her, though. Horizon’s storyline, as well as the Ash/Dr. Reid conflict, could both prove to be valuable opportunities for Peck to resurface, at least as a mention.

Apex Legends Most Played Characters and Tier List – June 2022 Season 13

The Apex Legends Tier List splits the characters in four tiers based on their popularity at Master and Apex Predator. Find out the top 20 most played legends by rank in June 2022 Season 13.

Based on popularity. The tier list is based exclusively on the popularity of a legend at Master and Apex Predator. The win rate has no effect on the tiers.

No pro data. The performance of a character when used by pro players and teams doesn’t influence the tiers as I wanted to create something useful for us ranked players.

The requisites for each tier never change. The tiers are viewed as clusters of data, and each legend is placed in the one they are closer the most. The goal is offering a neutral comparison that shows how the meta evolves over time.

No personal opinions. I hope that my statistical-based approach is a good attempt to provide a reliable list for all the casual and ranked players.

This list includes data from PC, Xbox, and PlayStation players.

Respawn has not released an official Apex Legends API to access the data of all players in the game. However, there are several websites that gather data from their users, and I decided to utilize the statistics provided by Apex Legends Status as it is the most popular one.

This tier list contains only matches played at Master and Apex Predator in June 2022, Season 13. Considering all ranks, the data is based on over 13 million players. I will update it before the end of each month with fresh data.

c-is-writing · a year ago Text intimacy pairing: lena luthor x gn!reader genre: fluff word count: 1894 warnings: none a/n: okay ngl i was pretty head empty while writing it so i apologize if this made no absolute sense :’D original request It all began with a simple brush against her hand that led to two hands intertwined with each other, swinging back and forth as the two of you walked through a park. The sun was setting, casting a peach light across all surfaces before transitioning into shades of pink and purple until settling into the dark blue of the night. You lean your head on Lena’s shoulder as the two of you continued to walk under the dim lamps scattered along the path. It was almost as if you were the only two people in the whole world. As you absentmindedly hum a tune, Lena could feel the heat rush to her cheeks, painting them red like the sunset sky. The warmth radiating off your body pressed against her side comforted her in a way that she never knew she needed until now. The hand connected to yours suddenly feels burning hot but Lena makes no effort to remove it. There’s no way a Luthor, someone who is meant to be cold and cruel and undeserving of this sort of comfort, could enjoy something like this. Right? Wrong. Absolutely wrong. Ever since that park date, Lena has practically become addicted to your touch. She constantly craves it like a smoker with a cigarette but she has restraint, she has an image to uphold as a Luthor. To her, it’s almost embarrassing how quickly she gives into your touch. Despite the embarrassment, the CEO is willing to do anything to feel your touch on her skin again. A knock on the office door brings her out of her dilemma as she looks up to meet your bright smile and bag of takeout in your hand. Immediately feeling a warmth bloom in her chest, she returns the smile as you make your way towards her. Placing the bag down on a spot that’s not covered by papers, you finally greet your lover. “Hey, Lee.” “Hi, love.” “Are you ready to take a quick lunch break or do you still need to finish some work?” Glancing at the unfinished document on her screen, Lena shakes her head and says, “I’m more than ready for lunch, I’m starving. Just let me clear off my desk first.” Giving her an okay, you take the bag to the coffee table and settle down, watching as Lena organizes the files. You reach into the brown bag to pull out the lunch items when you hear a gasp. Your head shoots up to see Lena holding her finger tightly. Rushing over you quickly ask, “Is everything okay? What happened?” Almost laughing, Lena waves it off as nothing major. “I just got a papercut that’s all.” “May I take a look at it?” “Oh, sure, I guess it wouldn’t hurt.” Lena says after seeing the concern in your eyes. She watches as you grab a bandaid from the first aid kit in the office and return to the table. Lena’s heart practically stops as you go to grab the injured hand. The gentle, feather-like grasp on her finger was enough to make her melt on the spot. As you wrap the bandage around the small cut, you press a soft kiss to it before placing her hand back into her lap. At this point, Lena has been reduced to a very flustered and embarrassed mess as her brain scrambles to understand what just happened. You were so gentle and loving with Lena that she could feel your adoration and care for her through your actions. Lena quickly clears her throat to hopefully pause her panicking mind and calm her racing heart. Noticing how Lena is still sitting in her chair, you take one of her hands and lead her to the couch where the two of you talked and had lunch together. Throughout the conversation and eating, Lena could still feel where you kissed her finger as if she touched a hot stove. Imagine a Luthor being this soft for someone. She can’t enjoy your touch. She’s not allowed to. Or at least, that’s what Lillian kept telling her. Luthors are cruel aren’t they? They are undeserving of love and care, so why should this be any different for Lena? Why does she have to feel so embarrassed about wanting your touch? Following the papercut incident, Lena found herself exaggerating her headaches and migraines from working constantly at L-Corp just so you could take care of her and cuddle the pain away. This went on for a few weeks and eventually you caught onto what she was trying to do. You realized that early on in the relationship, you always initiated physical contact with Lena and in those moments, she would tense up, making you think that she was uncomfortable with it. Later on, you learned that Lena is trying to get used to receiving so much physical love because it’s still new to her. So, you began to give it to her in small doses whether it was hand holding or pecks on the cheek before you left the apartment. Now, you see that Lena wants more but she’s either too afraid or too embarrassed to ask for it. Looking down at the CEO that’s currently in your arms, you quietly laugh at the realization and almost find it endearing. You tuck that thought into the back of your mind as you readjust your position on the couch and tighten your hold on Lena. She snuggles a bit deeper into your chest as your focus falls back onto the movie playing on the TV. Maybe, it’s okay to let herself relish your touch as long as you were hers. After all, the Luthor name is simply a name, not a rule for her to follow. A few days later, you find yourself heading back to your shared apartment where Lena is currently resting. According to Jess, she wasn’t feeling well and decided to take the rest of the day off to ensure that she could recover and work more efficiently tomorrow. It became a normal occurrence for Jess to call you whenever Lena was unwell so that you could take care of her. Upon arriving at the apartment, you find the raven-haired woman curled up in bed. At the sound of the bedroom door opening, she immediately sits up as her eyes light up when they lock with yours. You send her a loving smile as you say, “Lena, I want you to be honest with me.” Furrowing her eyebrows in confusion, Lena simply answers, “Okay…” “Are you actually feeling unwell or is this an excuse to have me take care of you?” The moment the question leaves your mouth, Lena’s eyes widen. Shit. Unsure of what to do as you watch Lena try to formulate a response, you decide to turn around and head to the kitchen to start preparing for dinner. As you’re about to leave, Lena desperately calls out, “Y/N, wait!” Pausing, you turn back around and tilt your head, expecting a response. As she slowly begins to speak, Lena breaks eye contact in favor of tracing the patterns of the bedsheets with her eyes. “I-, um, yeah, it was an excuse and I’m really sorry for disturbing you while you were at work for this.” Watching as Lena slumps over in shame, you make your way to the bed and sit down next to her. Quietly waiting for her to continue and give you a reason, an awkward silence fills the bedroom. You’re the first to break the silence. “Lee, you know I love you right?” “Yes, I know.” “Okay, so then, why? Why did you feel the need to make excuses to get me to come?” “Well, um…” Lena trails off while continuing to look at the bedsheets, trying to hide her embarrassment. “Babe, if you don’t give me a reason then I’m not giving you any cuddles until you tell me.” At your words, Lena’s head flies up, exposing her flustered state. “Wait, no, that’s not fair.” She whines as she tries to wrap her arms around you. Laughing, you do your best to push her off. With a soft smile, you tell her, “I just want my girlfriend to communicate with me and if I have to revoke cuddling privileges to get you to communicate then I’m going to do it.” Lena lets out a sigh as she realizes that you’re going to stick to your words and she loves your touch too much to lose it over her slight issue with communicating properly in relationships. Readying herself, she allows the Luthor mindset to slip away from her mind as she opens up to you. “I really like your touch and I was just afraid of how much I liked it because I wasn’t sure if I deserved it. When I was young, I was always told that Luthors don’t deserve love or care because of our cold nature. But the way you hold me made me melt and I felt tingly all over.” quickly adding in, “In a good way, I promise!”. She takes a deep breath before continuing, “I guess I just felt embarrassed of how strongly I wanted physical contact with you because I wasn’t sure if you would give that much to me. In the back of my mind, I thought that you were giving me all of this physical affection because you felt obligated to and not out of love.” Taking in her words, your expression begins to soften as you pull Lena into your arms. Your fingers slowly trace random patterns into her back as you begin to speak. “Oh, Lena, sweetheart. I love you so so much. I’m so sorry that you felt undeserving of this love and attention but I can definitely assure you that you deserve it all and so much more. You are so kind and you are everything that the Luthor name isn’t. You’ve worked so hard at L-Corp and trying to rebrand it as a company for good instead of how it was made before you.” Pulling away, you cup her face in your hands. “I promise that all of the affection that I freely give to you is out of love and not obligation. I will do everything I can to give you all of the love that you deserve. If you ever want cuddles, just ask okay? I’m definitely more than happy to cuddle you whenever you want.” With your final statement, you seal your promises to Lena with a soft kiss. You pull away from her to see her eyes brimming with tears. She simply nods at your words and you pull her into your chest once again. Lena has never felt so loved in her whole life. You practically radiate love and warmth that she will gladly receive without feeling as embarrassed now. Letting out a sigh of relief, Lena feels lighter now that she was able to open up to you. Before fully settling into your embrace, Lena asks one more question. “So, does this mean I get my cuddling privileges back?” Feeling the vibrations in your chest as you laugh, Lena smiles as you reply, “Yes, your cuddling privileges are no longer revoked and you can now ask for them whenever you want. Just promise that you won’t make any more excuses, alright?” “I promise.” taglist (all): @teenwonder @procrastinatingsapphictrash @owloftheshadows #*mine#lena luthor x reader#lena luthor x gn!reader#lena luthor x you#lena luthor#supergirl imagine#dc imagine#send help i’m so tired lmao#no thoughts head empty 188 notes · View notes

gryffindors-weasley · a year ago Text Snowflakes Draco Malfoy x Reader Summary: An evening date leads to an unexpected encounter, resulting in a lovely confession. Warnings: tad bit of jealousy, flirting, fluff It was a beautiful evening in your cozy little town, the snow falling in delicate flurries that clung in Draco’s platinum strands in an adorable, almost fairytale-like way. Of course, you made sure to tell him as such, a soft blush creeping up his neck and coloring his cheeks in a way you knew wasn’t just from the cold. He pulled you by your mitten covered hand into the familiar little cafe on the corner with a playful eye roll, a little bell over the door signaling your entrance. Never once letting your hand go, he places your usual orders with ease, only this time with the addition of a warm slice of pie. It was the perfect kind of date really, no grand gestures were ever needed. The warmth of the little building you currently resided in, just the two of you, it was all you ever needed. The light tug on your hand pulled you from your thoughts as he lead you to the little table you always found yourselves sitting at. Out of the small display window you had a view of the street, snow collecting slowly on every surface it found. The lanterns that dotted along the bricks of each building casting a warm glow over the town, a foggy condensation curving around the edges of every windowpane. You had always found winter to feel so magical, as magical as it could be compared to the very magic the two of you knew— “Are you listening, Darling?” Draco asks, his soft laugh bringing a smile to your lips as he once again caught your mind wandering. “Of course I’m listening,” you say, resting your chin in your hand as you smile fondly at him across the small, slightly wobbly table. “What have I said then?” His tone was light as he tilts his head, brow raised though you hardly saw it under his hair. He never seemed to want to cut it lately, not that you minded the messier look. Your smile widens as your cheeks turn a light shade of pink from your obvious blunder, “tell me again, my love.” “I thought maybe we could pay Lillian a visit down at the book shop before she closes up for the night,” he repeats. You perk up at that. “I think she’s mentioned a batch of new books had just come in this week,” you said, “we’ve got to check them out before William buys them up first.” Draco laughs softly, recalling the friendly older fellow the two of you often come across in the small shop. Your conversation had been interrupted by the soft ding of the bell that sat atop the counter, your drinks and pie steaming warmly to the right of it. “I’ll get it,” you say, pecking his lips before heading up. You pulled the money out of your wallet, leaving extra as a tip to which she smiled brightly at you. Carefully, you grabbed both mugs by their handles and then the small plate, ready to bring them back before an unfamiliar voice sounded behind you. “Do you need some help, Darling?” You turned around with a polite smile, a bit startled by the mans sudden presence behind you. He appeared to be not more than a couple years older than you and Draco, offering you a rather flirtatious smile. Draco was listening now, gray eyes bouncing over to the two of you briefly before averting back to his hands. He couldn’t help the bit of jealousy that was seeping its way in as he began to fidget with the packet of sugar that was pinched between his fingers. Who was that guy to be so daring? If only he’d seen the ring that adorned your finger under your mittens. “I’ve got it, thank you though,” you say kindly, turning to leave once more. “Would you care for a coffee sometime?” Draco scoffed to himself at the mans forwardness, having moved on to tearing pieces off his napkin as the tips of his ears burned red under the blonde hair that covered them. He did his best to keep to himself, however, knowing you wouldn’t want him to make a scene as he may have done as a teenager. But your answer came as a bit of a surprise. “I’m sorry,” you started, shifting on your feet, “but my heart belongs to someone else.” You smiled fondly at the thought of your beau seated just two tables away, sulking to himself unbeknownst to you. But his scowl was soon replaced by the softest of smiles as he looked at his hands that quickly swept away the smattering of napkin shreds. You were ever so romantic in his eyes, perhaps it’s from all those classic love stories he often finds you reading in every bit of free time you had. His heart was doing leaps in his chest nevertheless, your words dissolving any bit of jealousy he once held. Moments later that little bell over the door dinged, your footsteps drawing nearer before his tea was gingerly placed in front of him. The sweet smell of the apple pie soon wafted his way as you sat down, moving your chair a little closer. “What’s got you so smiley?” You ask, briefly running your thumb over his flushed cheek before taking a sip of your tea. “Nothing, Darling,” he chuckles, hiding his smile behind his own cup. But your words left a warmth within his chest no mug of tea could ever manage. — Teas were drank and pie was shared over small talk, fond gazes cast when the other hadn’t been looking. Soon you wave goodbye to Louise from her spot behind the counter, finding yourselves heading towards the shop in the brisk winter evening. “I love you,” you say after a minute or two of a comfortable silence. He’s quiet for a moment, something resembling that of a teasing smile on his lips. “If my memory serves me correctly, darling, your heart does belong to me after all .” Your cheeks flush a pale crimson at his words, the words you spoke not forty-five minutes earlier, but you spin on your heel to stand in front of him. “It’s true,” you shrug. He laughs softly, his breath puffing out in small clouds as he tugs you forward gently by your scarf. “You’ve got my heart too, love. Entirely.” He barely gets two kisses in before you’re grabbing his hand, skipping ahead to the book shop as you pull him along, a smile tugging at his lips. — Tags: @iliveiloveiwrite @snitches-at-dawn @valwritesx #draco malfoy#draco malfoy x you#draco malfoy x reader#draco malfoy fic#draco malfoy imagine 364 notes · View notes

perfectpaperbluebirds · 10 months ago Text @sicktember Prompt # 28: Missing Out Title: Unforgettable Fandom: N/A Based on this post as well as an ask box prompt. The prompt: “I’m currently dying for something set in a big house (any period) and the young master of the house has a party to attend but he feels awful and is trying to hide it and be a good host but keeps having to sneak off to cough/sneeze. Until maybe one guest notices and that’s how he meets his future wife.” A young heir attends a Christmas party with his childhood friend as his date. They find themselves in an interesting position when he falls ill. CW: Vomiting. (Author’s note: Never written this time period before, but I would like to again in the future! I really enjoyed this prompt. And yes these two are definitely in love and will be married someday.) The year is 1927, and two young men are seated in the back corner of a jazz club in New England, talking little as they sit, enjoying the music. As the band finishes their opening set and prepares to take a break, the older of the two men takes a deep drag from his cigarette, then glances at his companion. “All ready for your parents’ big Christmas shindig next weekend, Jesse?” Jesse rolled his eyes and scoffed, tapping a cigarette of his own out of the pack. “Sure John, of course. It’s such a thrill to be a captive audience as they get smoked and strut around peacocking for their friends. Highlight of my whole year, that. Masquerade Ball, my ass. What drivel.” John chuckled, reclining back in his chair and taking another drag. “You’re expected to bring a dame too, yeah?” “Naturally. It’d be too bad for the heir of the Hamilton fortune to attend without a looker, wouldn’t it? Shame all the women in this town are abhorrent.” John shook his head with another chuckle. “That attitude is why you’re a perpetual bachelor, hombre. But I have some news that may interest you. Did you know Miss Greenwood is back in town?” Jesse’s interest was piqued in spite of himself. “Lillian Greenwood is back?” “The very same. Home from university for the holidays.” Jesse leaned back in his chair, trying to look unbothered. “So what if she is. What’s it to me?” “Well I dunno, only that you might like to invite her to the Masq’. If memory serves, you never found her particularly abhorrent.” “We were kids!” “You were damn near inseparable. You don’t *have* to do anything, Jess. But as your oldest friend, I’m asking you to think on it. You’d enjoy the party more if you had company, and I’m sure she’d like to see her old stomping grounds again. Just something to consider is all.” Jesse made no reply as the band resumed the stage just then, but he did indeed think on it very hard. *** John’s information was proven true only a day later. Jesse was just exiting a drugstore he frequented with a fresh carton of cigarettes when he caught the eye of Lillian Greenwood, who was just about to enter the same store, and looking very fetching in a blue fitted coat and hat. Both their eyes widened in surprise upon seeing each other, and for a moment they were speechless. “Jesse?” Lillian finally said, a slow grin spreading over her face, so familiar to him. “It’s been at least an age!” She seized his hands in hers, reaching up on tiptoes to peck him on the cheek. “How are you? I’ve missed you!” “Lil!” He wrapped her in a hug. “I’ve missed you too! What are you doing back in this dump, accomplished University woman that you are now? I’m surprised you didn’t run in the opposite direction from here a long time ago.” “Well I haven’t graduated yet, silly. And I couldn’t miss another Christmas at home. I missed everyone here so much. Oh Jesse, it’s so good to see you!” She hugged him fiercely again. “You must tell me everything you’ve been up to! Come inside while I shop before we freeze.” He willingly followed her back in, looking fondly at the soft brown hair brushing across her shoulders. He was so sick of the horrid bobs all the girls were wearing, and he loved that Lillian was still wearing hers longer. He trailed her through the whole store, gamely answering the barrage of questions she directed at him, but mostly content to enjoy her familiar presence. Eventually she stopped short, turning to face him. “Are you all right? You’re very quiet. You’ve hardly said anything.” “I’m sorry. Just worn out I guess. Been working extra before the holidays.” “You are looking a bit peaky. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to jabber your ear off.” “No it’s fine, honest. I’m just happy to see you.” “Likewise.” She gave his hand a little squeeze, accompanied by a warm smile. Knowing he wasn’t going to get a better opportunity, he took a deep breath. “Lilli, do you remember that big bash my parents host every year for Christmas?” “Oh yes!” she said, her eyes lighting up in pleasure. “It was my favorite part of the holidays!” “No kidding? Well anyway, they still throw it. The last few years they changed it to a Masquerade Ball, but otherwise it’s still just like it was. It’s a week from Saturday. I know you just got into town and all, and maybe you already have plans… but what do you think about going with me as my date?” Lillian’s grin was immediate, and she clasped her hands together joyfully. “Oh Jess, I’d love that! Just like old times.” Jesse rubbed the back of his neck, attempting to smile. “Yeah, I guess. Same old dumb party. Like I said, if you’re busy, don’t worry about it. But you’re welcome to come… if you want and all.” She looked confused and a little hurt at his abrupt backtracking. “Of course I want to come. I’ll be there.” “Great. I better get going though. I’ll call you in a few days to give you the details. It was great to see you, Lil.” He pecked her on the cheek. “I’ll see you around, kid.” He strode out of the store with hardly a backwards glance, leaving her shocked face in his wake. He hated himself for behaving that way, and he wasn’t even sure why he did it. Perhaps it was because the “old times” she was referring to included the present he was stuck in, while she had clearly moved on. Perhaps it was the realization that he had resorted to asking his childhood best friend on a date rather than finding a real date to avoid the embarrassment of attending his parents’ party unaccompanied. But whatever the reason, speaking to her had made him equal parts thrilled and miserable. Surprisingly, when he called her a few days later as promised, she again agreed to accompany him, despite his rude behavior in the drug store, and continued to insist she was excited for the party, despite his constant negativity towards it. *** The Saturday before Christmas dawned bright and snowy, and the Hamilton estate was in an uproar all day with last-minute preparations. Every surface was bedecked for the holidays with ribbons and garlands and tinsel and wreaths and holly and candles. A Christmas tree stood in every room, making the whole house aromatic, each twinkling and topped with a star. When evening rolled in, so too did the guests, all as twinkling and bedecked as the house, filling every room in no time. The Masquerade Ball had begun. Lillian arrived promptly. Jesse met her in the foyer. Even wearing a mask, she was easily recognizable. She looked stunning in a sparkling gown that accented her figure perfectly. Her eyes were a color that would be easier called unique than pretty, her nose a touch irregular, and her teeth a touch crooked, but Jesse had always found her beautiful. Yet he was in a foul temper, and had been the whole day, and seeing her gave him little pleasure. He noted she had pinned up her hair so it appeared “bobbed” like everyone else’s, and even such a simple thing soured his mood further. Upon seeing her initially, he took her hand and kissed it, then gave a sarcastic bow. “Welcom, Lillian dear. It’s a pleasure to see you again,” he said, trying to keep his tone civil She curtsied daintily, smiling warmly. “The pleasure is all mine. You look very dashing and alluring in that mask.” He chucked coldly. “You’re looking spiffy yourself, kid. Well, shall we get on with it?” He offered her his arm, which she took, almost hesitantly. “Are you all right?” she asked. “You seem… not yourself.” “Fine and dandy. Ready to cut a rug and show a girl a good time. Let’s not keep the evening waiting.” He didn’t bother to keep the sarcasm out of his tone, but continued to tug her toward the dining room, albeit gently. She reluctantly followed, casting him worried glances. The young Master Hamilton performed his part admirably through the whole evening, however, donning the persona of the host as easily as he did his mask. He chatted and danced and flirted with the appropriate people, giving Lilli adequate attention as required as well. His mother must have been pleased, for the night was a smashing success, from the dinner to the dancing to the decor. Everyone was raving the whole evening about what a splendid party it was. The best one yet, everyone said, just as they said every year. Jesse, however, was utterly miserable. The bodies packing every room made him too warm, the lights were too bright, the music and din of talking made his head throb, the food smells turned his stomach, and the aroma of pine everywhere left him feeling on the verge of a sneeze all night, especially since his nose had been on the verge of dripping since he awoke. He could only nibble the rich supper. He was barely able to swallow even small sips of Christmas punch without feeling the urge to gag. In order to keep his sanity, whenever Lillian was occupied talking to someone and he wasn’t otherwise engaged, he would duck into one of the unused side parlors. In this sanctuary, away from the lights and sounds and smells, he removed his mask and composed himself. He would first allow himself to sneeze unhindered, finally able to stop his incessant stifling and sniffling, each time surprising himself at how wet and messy and ill they sounded. Then, if he hadn’t been gone too long, he would rest his face against the icy window pane, breathing slowly and deeply as a halo of condensation spread out from his hot forehead. Inevitably though, the time would come when he was forced to replace his mask and reenter the ball before he was missed. He counted down the hours desperately, willing himself to last until the end of the party. The evening began to wind down, and Jesse found himself ducking away more and more frequently. His stomach was in knots and his nausea was gradually rising, so composure was getting harder to maintain. He always checked to ensure Lilli was involved in a conversation before he did so, however. Imagine his surprise then, when moments after he snuck into his sanctuary yet again, he heard the door open after him and Lillian appeared just as he had given over to a violent sneezing jag: Hiihhh’GEHSSSH’ieeew! ESSSHH’yuuh! Hrrr’USH’IIEWW! Kuhh-hhiiih-ISSSHYUUH!” “Bless you, Jesse! Heavens, that was a fit! Are you alright?” she asked, approaching him and removing her own mask. “Have you been sneezing like that all night? You keep disappearing.” He flashed the most winning smile he could muster even as he wiped the mess from his face. “I’m just ducky,” he said, swallowing thickly as his stomach also decided to give a nasty lurch. “All the pine in the air gets me sneezing. Must be a bit allergic. Sorry for worrying you. Let’s go back out before we’re missed. I think I owe you a dance or two.” She ignored his rambling and came to stand directly in front of him with a searching look. She lifted a hand and brought the back of it to his sweaty forehead. She clucked softly. “You’re sick, aren’t you? You’re not feeling well at all.” The thin facade that was holding him together finally crumbled. He limply leaned against the wall, nodding mutely. “Why didn’t you say something? You should be in bed. You look awful.” “I didn’t want to spoil the evening,” he mumbled. “Well we need to get you out of here. You look like you’re about to collapse.” “I am about to collapse,” he said ruefully. “Come on then. No one will miss us anyway. Let’s go up the servants’ steps over here so we’re not seen.” “I don’t want you to miss out on the ball. You looked like you were having fun.” She caressed his cheek fondly. “I came here tonight to spend time with you. I’m not missing out on anything.” They shared a smile, his first genuine one of the night. Then she took him by the hand and led him expertly along the least conspicuous route to his bedroom. The pair of them had spent hours exploring every inch of this house from top to bottom as children, every cupboard, cranny, and corner. He hadn’t forgotten those times, and clearly she hadn’t either. It was strange bringing her back to his room. They had spent hours together here too during their growing-up years. He couldn’t help but imagine it through her eyes–what was different, what was the same. He realized bitterly that the only thing that was really different was the lack of toys and games everywhere. His room was a reflection of his life–boring and stagnant. If she was thinking along those lines, she gave no indication. Instead she led him to his bed with a hand at the small of his back, guiding him into a sitting position and helping him remove his jacket and tie. His shirt clung to his back with sweat, and heat rolled off of him in waves. The drier air up here made him begin to cough as soon as he sat, the sound hoarse and desperate. She made a sympathetic sound as she carded her fingers through his damp hair, then dug through his dresser, pulling out a set of his pajamas and tossing them over. “Make yourself more comfortable, and I’ll do the same.” She headed to his en suite bathroom. “I’ll be right back. Try to relax, Jess.” She gave him a little smile, which he attempted to return, a hand going to his sore stomach even as he did. Once the bathroom door was closed behind her, he slowly changed into his pajama bottoms and managed to strip down to his undershirt. All at once, his stomach had had enough, and he knew he was going to vomit. With the bathroom occupied, the next available option was the balcony off of his room. He dashed outside to the railing, emptying the contents of his stomach onto the ground below, heaving until he had nothing left. As the spasms slowed, his vision began to go gray and wobbly. He sank to his knees weakly, unable to do anything else, clinging to the railing in the freezing cold, which at first felt pleasant on his fevered skin. He wasn’t sure how long he knelt there, and it would have been even longer had Lillian not come out to find him. By the time she did, he was shivering so violently that his teeth rattled in his head. She was speaking to him, but he couldn’t register what she was saying. Finally she pulled him bodily to his feet and helped him inside, her arm wrapped around his waist as she supported most of his weight. She again led him to his bed, making him lie down this time and bundling blankets over his icy cold skin while she sat at his side. His consciousness solidified and the world stopped spinning, and eventually he noticed that while she was still wearing her party dress, she had removed her makeup and unpinned her hair, looking more like her old self. The thought made him marginally warmer. “Let me go fetch some tea for you, and some medicine,” she murmured, stroking his hair. She stood and tried to pull away, but he quickly grabbed her wrist, his grasp surprisingly strong. “Don’t go,” he rasped, choking back a cough. “I don’t want tea or medicine. It’ll only make me vomit again. Just stay.” “Stay…” she repeated. “Right. I suppose I could stay.” She went to pull a chair to his bedside, but he stopped her. “No, come lie here with me.” “Jesse…” she began. “That’s not–” “Why shouldn’t you? You were my date. It’s what everyone is expecting anyway,” he said, a glint of humor in his eye. She laughed in spite of herself. “I suppose there is that.” Against her better judgement, she crossed to the other side of his bed and slipped under the blankets, trying to be mindful of her dress as she got comfortable. He immediately rolled over and nestled against her, and she wrapped an arm around him and began to rub his back soothingly. They passed the night exactly like that. He was exhausted and very ill, and was clearly miserable the whole night through. However, he refused to let her leave the bed to fetch him anything and only wanted to lie against her all night as he slipped in and out of sleep. She vaguely recalled him being the same way when they were young, but she certainly hadn’t expected such behavior tonight. Then again, she hadn’t expected to be sharing his bed either. He slept fitfully, his symptoms keeping him from true rest despite his weariness. Away from the pine trees his sneezing was less, but the congestion and coughing was worse. He was achy and nauseous and too hot or too cold. He also wanted to be touching her at all times, so she slept even less, for between his tossing and groaning and his sweltering fever heat, she could not get comfortable. Yet she knew he needed her this way tonight, and was glad to be able to help her oldest friend. The morning dawned gray and cold. Lillian lay awake still, while Jesse was at last sleeping beside her, his face tucked into her side. She was trying to decide how best to convince him to let her go home and change when an opportunity for escape presented itself in the form of his mother. Lillian heard her well before she saw her, for her best shoes clattered loudly on the stairs, and her inebriated giggling and whispering was impossible to miss. It was almost certain she hadn’t gone to bed after the party. Lillian quickly slipped out from under Jesse’s arm and slid to the floor, ducking under the bed. Just because Jesse seemed to think she was expected to spend the night with him did not mean she wanted to be caught in it, especially by Mrs. Hamilton, regardless of what did or did not happen. Mrs. Hamilton attempted to be stealthy as she peeked into her son’s room, but only his fever-induced slumber prevented him from waking. However, even while intoxicated, what they say about a mother’s sense is true, for she apparently noted something amiss and crept closer to her son’s bed. Lillian could only see her feet and legs, but she assumed she Mrs. Hamilton reached out to feel her son’s forehead, for the elder woman made a little sound of dismay and began to shake him awake. “Jesse, you’re burning up! Oh my, what happened? Are you sick? Did it start at the ball? How long have you not felt well? Oh you’re so pale! And you’re shivering! My poor baby! What can I do?…” It seemed she had no end of exclamations and questions. Lillian couldn’t help but roll her eyes. Meanwhile Jesse made sounds of waking, sounding very irritated and confused at first. He didn’t realize what was happening initially, and Lillian heard him say her name more than once. Thankfully his mother did not notice over the sound of her own constant flow of verbalized concern. Eventually Jesse realized who was speaking to him and began to give appropriate answers, leaving Lillian out of most of it, which the young woman appreciated. Mrs. Hamilton didn’t stop speaking the entire time she was in the room. Eventually though it became clear she intended to fetch a doctor, tea, medicine, and one hundred other things for her son’s illness. Jesse spoke only as much as he had to, his voice weak and hoarse and congested. He did not argue with her about any of it, knowing it was futile. Finally the well-meaning woman left, still talking even as she shut the door behind herself. Lillian gingerly rolled out from under the bed, startling Jesse when she appeared beside him out of nowhere. However a grin split his face when their eyes met. “I thought you left me without saying goodbye,” he rasped. “Well now you see I haven’t. I do need to leave now though, before your mother returns with an army of doctors and finds me here. I would also like to change my clothes at some point and freshen up. Perhaps take a bit of a nap.” He looked devastated at this, but perked up as she continued: “I’ll come back soon though, as a proper visitor. I don’t fancy ducking under the bed whenever anyone comes up the stairs.” “All right,” he sighed. “I’ll be waiting for you, then.” She approached him, pressing her lips to his hair as he hugged her fiercely. “Be well, Jess. I’ll see you soon.” She moved to the doorway, her eyes twinkling in a smile. “And thanks for a great night. That was a date I’ll never forget.” #sickfic#everyone is hotter with a fever#sicktember2021#prompt 28 20 notes · View notes

hoodoo12 · 10 months ago Text The Ties That Bind (And How to Follow Them) 2/? @bunnys-beetlejuice-blog @werwulfy @mel-time @rainingpaint @heresathreebee @infptarius @turtlepated @sweetcat-666 @fireflower1015 @go-whovian-universe @genderless-cryptid @monsterlovinghours @strange-n-unbluusual @love-pony13-blog Pate never did fall back asleep properly, but she was content to doze lightly in Beetlejuice’s arms for a few more hours. It wasn’t deep enough to dream, but in between snoozes she did her best to commit what she had seen in the nightmare to memory. The better to understand it, she hoped. Even Lillian was of two minds as to whether or not the dreams meant anything at all but Pate couldn’t shake the notion that they meant something important. Maybe they were warnings. Her first thought was Rigel, trying to claw his way back into their lives. Just the thought was enough to make her shudder and Beetlejuice’s arms tightened around her, sensing her unease. They spent the weekend in, lazing together on the couch and rewatching The Mandalorian. Pate felt bad that she was really too tired these days to take him out to do anything, but he never seemed to mind. She recorded her dreams in the journal to take to Lillian’s for the next session, slept fitfully Saturday and Sunday night, and all too soon it was Monday again. Showering woke her up a bit more, chasing away the last of the feelings of dread from her nightmares and she readied herself for work. As he usually did, Beej saw her off at the door. Pate wound her arms around his neck, pressing her lips to his in a lingering kiss. “I’ll see you tonight,” she said, pecking him on the nose before departing. ⁂ Pate always seemed to get better rest closer to dawn. He hated that she had to then be woken just when she was comfortable; Mondays really did suck. Beetlejuice hoisted himself up on the sink in the bathroom while she showered, wishing he could join her under the spray like he’d done in Las Vegas, but she was already behind schedule and a distraction wasn’t going to be appreciated. He stayed out of her way even though he followed her around through the apartment as she made to leave. Promising to be good but knowing there was no way for her to possibly think of every single thing that could be construed as “bad”, he pressed against her to steal some of her body heat and then watched her leave. He went to the front window to look down at her as she made it to her car, and blew a kiss when she saw him in the window. He watched till she was gone out of the parking lot. Another day alone in the apartment. At least he had the freedom to smoke inside with Pate gone, so he lit a cigarette and stared forlornly at the empty room. Pate had suggested he take up a hobby to fill the time, but put her foot down when he believed raising a baby Sandworm would be a good idea. “Whatever a “Sandworm” is,” she’d included at the end of the conversation. She didn’t leave her dream journal behind; her mentor had told her to keep it with her so she could jot things down if they came to her, but Beej had read through it when she was dozing beside him. That wasn’t invading her privacy, not really, he justified, because she just left it right beside the bed– –Lillian Borden. He could go visit Lillian Borden and talk to her about Pate’s progress or lack thereof. The thought sprung on him so quickly the cigarette fell out of his mouth. He crushed it into the carpet, vowing to himself he’d clean it up before Pate got back and saw it, and stepped into the ether to visit the antique shop Pate spent so much time in. ⁂ The store was closed, of course. It was early in the morning for the antique crowd. But Pate had mentioned the old woman lived above the store, so he simply spirited through the door. Good thing he wasn’t a vampire, he chuckled to himself. Making his way through the aisles towards the staircase he could see, a few of the items he passed had some tendrils of energy that either moved towards him like he was a magnet, or away from him like they were repelled. All of them were wispy and easily avoided. On a wall hung a old, ratty taxidermied deer head that slowly turned to look at him, but he was pretty sure whatever that was wouldn’t be able to move any further. Its glass eyes lit with inner fire and if there was some way to make friends with that thing, it would make a very creepy Halloween decoration. Beetlejuice made a mental note to talk to it later. Reaching the stairs, there was a slight resistance as he put his foot on the first step. Bulling his way through it, it popped like he’d broken bubblewrap and he skipped the rest of the way up. If it was a ward, there was no sense in knocking on the door at the top, so he simply opened it and went inside. There, he found a small, clean apartment. Plants surrounded the windows, and old tin type photographs and decorative mirrors were hung on the walls. Someone was in the kitchen. Straightening his jacket and running a hand through his hair–which did nothing to tame it–Beetlejuice walked to the door separating the living space from the kitchen and found the older woman standing at her stove, stirring something in a pot. A tea kettle was also on, with steam rising from the spout. She was muttering something half under her breath. “Hi!” he said, without preamble. “You’re Lillian Borden, right? Pate’s been coming to see you, and I want to talk.” He could never remember that people needed some warning when he appeared and started talking. Typically he was met with screams. This woman didn’t scream. She turned towards him, eyes narrowed, with a knife in her hand he hadn’t noticed on her far side. There was more of that strange repellent energy wafting from the knife, and he held his hands up even though his natural instinct was to meet force with force. “I just want to talk, lady–” She didn’t look like she wanted to talk, really. ⁂ In all her years, Lillian had never expected to find herself with a pupil. But then this young woman had come into her shop one day, and it was like getting hit in the chest with a sledgehammer when she got closer. Lillian had met others in her time with… gifts, but none like this girl. Whatever she had, it was potent, close to the surface, and raw as wet clay just waiting to be shaped. She must have sensed something about Lillian because in no time she was showing up regularly, asking for Lillian to teach her, to show her how to handle this power inside her. At first Lillian had been reluctant to go poking around something so volatile, but eventually she conceded that the younger woman was in need of guidance. What with the strange, terrible dreams that disturbed her sleep and the almost miasmic aura that seemed to accompany her. It didn’t emanate from her, it just hung around her like a cloud of smoke from a cigarette. There was something haunting her, something Lillian urged her to purge as quickly as possible. For whatever reason, Lillian could tell that Pate hadn’t done it, that she actively lied about it when asked. Why she should want some dark spectral energy floating around her all the time was beyond Lillian’s ability to comprehend, but she felt sure that it had something to do with the girl’s nightmares, or even her abilities themselves. It was Monday, not quite time to open up the shop, so she muddled about in the kitchen. Lillian didn’t consider herself a witch or a Wiccan or any such thing, but there were certain practices that she had found beneficial in her particular way of life. The tea was almost ready to come off the stove, the talismanic elixir she’d been preparing nearly finished when she felt it: the ward on her stairs dissipated like a puff of breath on a frigid day. She paused momentarily in what she was doing, opening the drawer by the stove and withdrawing a black-handled athame from it’s sheath, keeping it concealed by her body as she continued to putter around the stove, mumbling a protective charm against whatever was entering her apartment. He greeted her genially enough, mentioning Pate by name and Lillian knew at once that who or whatever this garishly bedecked man with his green hair and striped suit and mischievous aura was, it was the entity she sensed around her student. Turning toward him, gripping the athame tightly and feeling the thrum of energy in the instrument, Lillian maintained her cool despite the intrusion. “Don’t imagine you and I would have much to talk about,” she said not impolitely. ⁂ “Well, Pate’s a common denominator,” Beej replied snappishly, despite trying to keep his voice in more the pleasant range. He wasn’t exactly sure what his hair was doing color-wise at the moment; that knife in her hand put him on edge. He moved towards her to help her understand his sincerity about the situation, although he dispensed with pleasantries. “I watch what’s been happening to her. I see the nightmares she has. She came to you for help and it isn’t getting any better, so you and me, we’re gonna talk–” ⁂ The tea kettle’s shrill whistle sounded behind her as the thing that looked like a man but wasn’t a man stepped closer. Without pausing another moment Lillian pointed the athame at his chest and traced a sigil in the air, murmuring in rapid Latin as she repeated the movements of the consecrated instrument again and again. She reached down within herself, feeling for the well of power that resided inside and tapped into it, pouring her will and intent into the drawing of the sigil and the recitation of the incantation. He froze in place as if his shoes were stuck to the scuffed hardwood floor, looking first down at his own feet and then back up at her as she continued to chant and trace with the athame. His form began to blur and then to disintegrate around the edges, spreading inward as a stiff breeze from nowhere blew his coat and tie and hair around until they were no more. Lillian didn’t relax even when she was once again alone in the kitchen, nothing remaining of the entity that had stood before her. Keeping a tight hold on the athame, she strode slowly but purposefully towards the decorative mirrors hanging on her living room wall. Inside the glass she saw, not her own reflection, but the man who had broken her ward and entered her home uninvited. After verifying that her temporal displacement had succeeded, only then did she breathe a sigh of relief. “There,” she said in a grim, satisfied tone. “That ought to hold you. And keep you away from that girl.” The figure in the glass raised both fists, hammering against the surface of the mirror but made no sound. Turning away, Lillian returned to her kitchen and took the kettle off the stove. ⁂ Coming at him with that dark-handled knife wasn’t good. Beetlejuice bit off his own sentence and raised his hands to show he was no threat, but whatever this old lady was doing he felt a combination of bound and dizzy. She was going to stab him, and he most definitely did not want that to happen; instinctively he knew that blade meant bad news. But she didn’t stab him, only the air in an intricate design. Her Latin was whispered and hurried, and he only caught some of it, “Entrapment . . . reflection . . .” as an unearthly breeze caught him. Glancing at his feet, they seemed to fly away as if dust on the wind. It didn’t hurt, it didn’t feel like anything, but he didn’t like it and opened his mouth to protest, to say they got off on the wrong foot. Before any words could leave his mouth he was no longer in her kitchen. Now he was looking out at her living room from an odd angle. He didn’t know what had happened, and defensively black tentacles erupted around him, but there was nothing here to fight against. Just a white endless plain, except for the window he was looking out of. Beetlejuice willed his tentacles away. A movement in his periphery caught his eye and he leaned forward to see it better. His forehead hit something. Brow furrowed, he raised his hands and they were stopped by something unseen as well. Lillian came into full view in front of him, peering at him like a bug under a magnifying glass. When she stepped closer, what he could see of her changed–only her shoulders and head were visible. He tried to wrap his head around what he was seeing. He had no problem hearing her and her proclamation that he’d be ‘held’, and kept away from Pate. Beetlejuice pounded on the glass, shouting that there was a mistake, that she better let him out, he was going to rain terror down on her the likes of which she’d never imagined– Lillian smiled sweetly and walked away, back out of his range of vision. The kettle stopped whistling. The whole thing had only taken three minutes, tops. ⁂ It took him some time to figure out where she’d imprisoned him. He hadn’t paid much attention to her living room since he had immediately heard her in the kitchen, but after some thought–because what else was there to do in an endless white space of nothingness?–and her returning, giving him a smile, and sitting down to watch TV (it was some Hallmark movie that was possibly more torturous than being wherever he was), he realized he could only see the windows opposite the wall that separated the kitchen and living room. That, and where she was sitting he could only see the top of Lillian’s head. She’d put him in one of her mirrors. “FUCK,” Beej shrieked into the void. There was no echo, which was creepy. This old woman was going to keep him down in her antique store of horrors! He wondered how many of the presences he felt walking through the first floor of the place were people like him–misunderstood, just wanting to talk, and she was like some self-appointed Pinkerton agent, cleaning up potential problems. Beetlejuice slammed the back of his head, hard, on the glass. Lillian didn’t react. He let the tentacles come out again, and used their strength to attack it. Nothing. Brute force wasn’t the way out. Cleverness was. If he sat with his back below the glass, he was fairly sure he was unseen. Maybe she had some fancy-schmancy wards on the glass, but maybe there was another way out. He let his tentacles explore the space. There wasn’t much, just endless white. There was no way for him to call for help. No way to let Pate know what had happened. He’d be stuck here for an undetermined amount of time– –a tentacle found a seam. Not a seam per se, but some break. Crack. He didn’t know what, because it was white too. Scooting over to it, Beetlejuice couldn’t even see it, but he could feel it beneath his fingertips. He dug a nail under it, not caring that it became ragged, only wanting to widen it and see what might be beyond. When it was more than just a crack, a tentacle snaked in and broke it open more. Pieces fell away like plaster, and shoving his face against the hole he could see another window. Another mirror! Tenaciously, Beetlejuice tore apart the crack until he could squeeze through. He had no idea how much a maze it might be, with nothing to guide him. He’d just keep going until he could find Pate’s bathroom mirror, as long as it took. tbc . . . #writing#fanfiction#Beetlejuice#Ties that bind 19 notes · View notes

“Have you ever stood and stared at it? Marveled at its beauty, its genius? Billions of people just living out their lives, oblivious. I’m talking about the unfathomable depths of space, of course. What? You’ve never seen it? Ooh, do I have a tale for you. Me? You may call me Horizon, dearie.”

Greetings, dearies! Time (and space) has come to talk about our favorite space mom, Dr. Mary Somers, callsign Horizon. Her story has everything you would expect from the Titanfall universe: Science, black holes, betrayals, time travel, and family drama. In this article, we’ll take one small step for man and one giant leap for Apex Legends lore. Hmm, I seem to be gravitating towards these puns. Let’s spacewalk right into her story.

Who is Horizon?

A Life Dedicated to Science

“I survived being swallowed by the dark heart of the universe, so you lot seem a wee bit… quaint to me.”

Born on Psamathe nearly a hundred years before the current events in Apex Legends, Dr. Mary Somers was a brilliant scientist and one of the pioneers of her time. When the energy crisis hit the Outlands, genius billionaire playboy Lillian Peck put together a group of specialists called Project: IRIS to tackle the issue, and Peck’s close friend Dr. Somers was among them.

Located on Olympus, Project: IRIS and the group of scientists in it worked tirelessly towards finding a solution to the energy crisis. After a while, it was none other than Dr. Somers and her trusted assistant, Dr. Ashleigh Reid, who came up with a method to fix everything. Dr. Somers and Dr. Reid discovered a new element named Branthium. However, it could only be “mined” near a black hole and required a near-impossible refining process before it could be used. But if Project: IRIS managed to refine it, even the tiniest amount of Branthium would provide enough energy to the entirety of the Outlands.

The reward was very much worth the risk, so Dr. Somers and Dr. Reid made an expedition to the black hole where they could get the Branthium required. The honor of taking this huge step belonged to Dr. Somers, who got out of the ship in a capsule tethered to the main body of the ship. After Dr. Somers acquired the Branthium and sent it through the tether back to the ship, Dr. Reid decided to cut the tether off and leave Dr. Somers to her demise for reasons unknown at the time.

Dr. Reid returned with the Branthium and announced Dr. Somers’ “unfortunate death” during the expedition. Everyone involved knew of the risks of getting anywhere near a black hole, so Dr. Somers was presumed dead.

While Dr. Reid and the rest of the group started working on how to refine the Branthium, a betrayed and very much confused Dr. Somers was clinging to the last bits of hope near a black hole. Dr. Somers had promised her son, Newton, that she would return safe and sound, and they’d be together again. Holding on to her dear son’s memory, Dr. Somers achieved the unthinkable and managed to retrieve more Branthium, refining it to a usable degree, thanks to her drone named N.E.W.T. She used the energy generated from the Branthium and the space-bending nature of the black hole to travel back to her home, and against all odds, she succeeded. However, the black holes also bend the time, and Dr. Somers found out that her interstellar maneuver didn’t cost her 15 months but 87 years.

Back from the Dead

“So, is anyone else here technically over 100 years old? Wait… some of you are? I’m right at home then!”

During her decades-long absence, the events mentioned in Ash’s story happened, leading to the creation of Pathfinder and Ash. It is heavily implied that Newton and Dr. Ashleigh Reid also had a romantic relationship. Returning as a ghost from the past, Dr. Somers decided to join the Apex Games under the callsign Horizon to fund her next research: a way to go back in time to see her son, Newton.

Horizon’s return coincided with the debut of Olympus as the new battleground in the Apex Games. Seeing her old friend’s dream city becoming a warzone, Horizon found herself frequently challenged by a Simulacrum named Ash. While Ash kept a hostile attitude towards Horizon, she also saved her life when the latter was in danger. Confused by the duality of Ash’s actions, Horizon decided to focus on the Simulacrum to figure out what was going on.

When the Legacy Antigen incident occurred, Horizon worked tirelessly towards a solution, a feat that was recognized by Ash, who mentioned that her son Newton would be proud of his mother. Once again confused by Ash’s knowledge of her son, Horizon was shocked when Ash later dropped by to tell her that Lillian Peck would thank her if she was alive to see Horizon’s work. At that point, Horizon was sure that Ash was hiding something big about both their past.

Horizon proceeds to ask Pathfinder about the Event, where the members of Project: IRIS sacrificed their lives to save the Outlands since he was there. During their talk, Pathfinder being the silly MRVN he is, says that Ash had the access codes to Olympus. Further confusion envelops Horizon, as the access codes of Olympus can only be known by Lillian Peck. Horizon, now believing Ash is her old friend Lillian Peck in a Simulacrum form, pays a visit to Revenant to find out how he woke up to his suppressed personality.

While being against the idea, Revenant tells her about the override system: a unique code for each Simulacrum that can wake them up. Horizon proceeds to visit Crypto, who acquires Ash’s override codes for her. She then visits Ash in her quarters, reciting the code, in hopes of waking up her friend Lillian. While Horizon recites the codes, stunning Ash due to the debilitating amount of data being processed all at once, Revenant reveals that he followed Horizon and tries to destroy Ash, reminding Horizon that waking up a Simulacrum is an unbearable torture.

Ash survives Revenant’s attack and, after Horizon finishes reciting the code, reveals herself to be the Simulacrum version of Dr. Ashleigh Reid. Shocked and angered by this revelation, Horizon pushes for answers. Ash takes back control from the suppressed persona she calls Leigh and leaves the room after thanking Horizon for setting her free from the illusion of being a pitiful human.

So far in the story, the only encounter between Horizon and Ash is where Leigh once again surfaces for a moment to tell Horizon that Newton did not die during the Event, followed by Ash threatening Horizon with taking the information about Newton to the grave. As I mentioned previously, Newton is one of the top contenders for a future Apex Legend. Maybe Horizon won’t have to travel through time to find her son, but the son she will find in the present might not be the one she remembers. We’ll have to wait and see.

Horizon’s Abilities

“Looks like someone didn’t understand the ‘gravity’ of the situation.”

Horizon’s Passive Ability is Spacewalk. With Spacewalk, Horizon can bypass the stagger effect of falling from high altitude. She can start moving faster than any other Legend after landing. She can also make quicker mid-air turns and loses substantially less accuracy while firing mid-air.

Spacewalk saves you from a lot of quality of life precautions you would take while playing as other Legends, such as holding on to ziplines at the last moment while falling from a high spot. Her ability to instantly get back into action after making a big position shift puts her in the “figure things on the go” category of Legends, thanks to Spacewalk, among her other abilities.

Horizon’s Tactical Ability is Gravity Lift. Horizon throws a device that activates upon reaching a surface and projects a reverse-gravity field, pushing everyone and everything upwards. Exiting the gravity field will push you out with force, helping you cover a certain distance. This ability can be used to lift yourself and your squadmates to literally get the high ground whenever you want. However, there’s another crucial use for this ability. Remember, it can lift everyone and everything. If you want to deny entrance to a building or a room, you can drop the Gravity Lift to its entrance. Gravity Lift will also lift the explosives thrown at it, providing you safety for its 10-second duration.

Joining a bloodsport doesn’t seem to have taken away her good spirits. (Image: Respawn Entertainment)

Like other throwables in Apex Legends, the device you throw when you use Gravity Lift can be zapped by Wattson’s ultimate ability, the Zappinator 5000. The most common use of Gravity Lift is to lift yourself during a fight to take a quick breather to shield up. This became a bread and butter combo before Gravity Lift was nerfed to kick you out after 2 seconds. So now you have 2 seconds to make sure you position yourself well. Considering all its functions, Gravity Lift is one of the most influential abilities in Apex Legends in terms of changing the course of a fight. If you’re the type of player who can adapt to any situation, Gravity Lift will create countless opportunities.

Horizon’s Ultimate Ability is Black Hole. Time to give the opponents a taste of what Horizon had to deal with before coming back to scold all of us. When you activate Horizon’s Ultimate Ability, you throw a device that will create a gravity field. But this time, the device we’re throwing is our trusty not-a-replacement-son N.E.W.T., who activates the Black Hole effect after 2 seconds. The Black Hole pulls in opponents regardless of their position, as long as they’re in range. This means they can be pulled from behind walls and such. Thanks to this function, a well-placed Black Hole will create more opportunities than just pulling opponents to itself.

For example, if an opponent is blocking a door with their body to prevent you from entering, throwing your Black Hole sideways will pull them away from the door, albeit on the other side of the wall. This sudden displacement will both disorient your opponent and let you open the door to enter and finish them off. With Horizon, the possibilities are endless! Like space!

Black Hole will also highlight the opponents behind it, providing you with enough info to pinpoint their location. Remember that N.E.W.T. is still a physical device and can be destroyed with gunfire and explosives. It has 175 HP, and the Black Hole will shut down early if N.E.W.T. is destroyed. Also, since we “throw” N.E.W.T., guess what happens if Wattson’s nearby. Yep, the Interception Pylon once again zaps it mid-air, canceling the ability altogether. Additionally, since this is a mechanical device, a well-timed Crypto EMP will also disable N.E.W.T. and the Black Hole.

Remember that mobility abilities such as Pathfinder’s grapple can help your opponents get out of your Black Hole. Also, Legends such as Wraith and Ash can travel through the Void to escape your ultimate. To prevent this, make sure to have a plan before throwing in your ultimate ability or be prepared to figure things out on the go.

How to play Horizon

“With skills like that, you’d earn the Psamathe peace prize for, ya know… war.”

Horizon’s main playstyle is, as it frequently comes up during talks about Horizon, to figure things on the go. This is mostly because Horizon is a great Legend to pick when you want to be the one that dictates who goes where—including your opponents. In a fight, you go where the space mom wants you to go, whether you want it or not.

When you’re playing as Horizon, communication with your squadmates becomes crucial. Because of Horizon’s crowd-control-oriented skill set, the level of coordination you have with your squadmates will decide your success rate.

When initiating a fight, especially if you already have the high ground, your ultimate ability—Black Hole—is a great opener. Catching opponents off guard with your ultimate will give you even further advantage if you’re able to follow up. Make sure to throw as many explosives as you can towards the Black Hole since opponents will be near it. If you have a Fuse, make sure he throws everything in as well. If all else fails, just throw Fuse at the Black Hole. He’ll know what to do.

While Apex Legends has always been a very vertical game, Horizon takes this to another level. Use your Tactical Ability -Gravity Lift- to quickly reach higher places or disorient opponents by lifting them up when they least expect it. This is why Horizon is an “on the go” Legend. Her abilities can affect anyone, so how you utilize them is entirely up to you. Both her tactical and ultimate can be used aggressively, as well as defensively. Being chased? Throw your Gravity Lift at the door after you enter a room to deny entry or if you’re in an emergency situation, throw your Black Hole at a strategic spot to draw opponents away from you.

Other than fighting and making the lives of your opponents harder, Horizon has a unique ability when traversing through the maps. If you manage to get enough horizontal momentum, her Spacewalk passive will allow you to travel much faster and further than any other Legend. At the correct angle and speed, Horizon can almost reach Pilot levels of quick traversal. A great way to achieve this is using the Gravity Cannons in Storm Point. After launching yourself from a Gravity Cannon, use the easier air movement facet of Spacewalk to make sure you don’t land on the designated landing spot. The rest is sliding and jumping at the right time, and you can travel through nearly half of Storm Point—which is currently the biggest map in Apex Legends—in a flash.

Horizon skins

“Particle colliders or R301s. They both split atoms if you ask me.”

Horizon’s skins have been… divisive among the community, to say the least. While she constantly gets new skins with each event and store sale, most of these skins are considered either uninspired or downright ugly. She doesn’t have any story-related skins, so this section of the article will be more of an opinion piece and might include some juicy gossip!

Horizon’s skins rarely get a “meh” from the community. This one did it. (Image: Respawn Entertainment)

Horizon’s base legendary skins are Solaris and Dark Matter, each having one variation. Dark Matter is the more popular one, while Solaris arguably received the better variations. Horizon’s Season 10 Battle Pass skin, Biotic Luminary, is considered one of the worst skins in Apex Legends, and it’s rivaled only by Neon Stardust, another Horizon skin. Personally, I find Neon Stardust interesting enough and am not irritated by it, but the community loves to hold surveys such as “which is the worst skin in the game,” and Horizon’s name is mentioned frequently in those threads.

Fortunately, Horizon mains are also blessed with one of the most popular skins in the game: Galactic Guardian. Heavily inspired by the mecha-themed franchise Voltron, this legendary skin frequently comes up during the “best skins in the game” discussions. The gaming communities just love to pick bests and worsts, don’t they?

Horizon’s finishers and emotes

“Strap in, Newtie. Things are about to get mighty interesting.”

Horizon’s finishers mostly revolve around her being a scientist. Again, sorry for the puns. I seem to be unable to drift away from them. All three of her finishers involve Horizon using her devices to take out the knocked-down opponent.

In All Charged Up, Horizon charges up her Gravity Lift device and points it towards the victim’s face at point-blank range, taking them out with the immense force that comes out from the device.

In the aptly named Event Horizon, Horizon brings out N.E.W.T. to create a much smaller black hole that sucks the victim in, sending them to the shadow realm. This finisher has since become a meme among the community as the “Pokémon catching” finisher.

“Hello, sir. I’m from space, and you’re coming with me.” (Image: Respawn Entertainment)

In First Law, Horizon once again deploys devices, two of them this time, that smash the opponent upwards and then downwards to the ground. Meanwhile, Horizon, knowing her devices would do their work flawlessly, is lost in thought about something else and has an idea just before the finisher ends.

On the other hand, Horizon’s emotes reflect her awkward and playful side.

In Hover Pen, Horizon uses her Gravity Lift device to, well, hover a pen and comes up with a new idea while watching it.

In Inspiration, she summons a hidden device that turns into a digital whiteboard, and Horizon once again figures something out. She tends to focus on mundane tasks while thinking about things.

In Mom Dance, Horizon summons N.E.W.T., jumps on it, and performs an off-balance mom dance.

In Lighter Than Air, Horizon deploys two Gravity Lift devices and steps on them, performing a figure skating move resembling an axel jump. A triple axel, no less.

Horizon’s Relationship with other Legends

“Excuse me, mommy! Sorry. Mommy! Sorry. Mommy! Sorry. Mommy! Sorry.” – Newcastle, probably.

Lore-wise, Horizon can be considered one of the core characters since she’s connected to almost every big event until Season 12. She was part of Project: IRIS, connecting her to Gibraltar, Wattson, Pathfinder, and Ash. After her return from the black hole, she immediately gets involved with crisis scenarios such as the Legacy Antigen and quickly forms friendly bonds with many Legends, even Ash to some degree, until Ash’s real identity is revealed.

Horizon’s relationship with Ash is rough at best. Having her personality split in two, Ash claims her “human” side, Leigh, is the weaker one. Ash also mentions that she existed long before Dr. Ashleigh Reid died, implying Ash was the one who cut off Horizon’s tether during the expedition. Leigh seems to be in a desperate situation and tries to help Horizon whenever she manages to briefly take control of the Simulacrum body. Traveling 87 years into the future only to find her betrayer right next to her, Horizon is heavily conflicted while building a relationship with Ash. However, Ash and—by extension—Leigh is the only person who might have any information about Horizon’s son, Newton’s fate after the Event.

If nothing else, Newcastle brings lots of charm to the Games. (Image: Respawn Entertainment)

Since Horizon’s current goal is to get back to her son, she reluctantly works with Ash in hopes of getting the information out of her at some point. Being a time-traveling Scottish mom, though, she’s not above calling Ash a “heartless toaster” at times.

Horizon seems to be on good terms with most of the Legends, but she’s particularly fond of some. Wattson, for example, fascinates her as a fellow “clever lassie.” Seer is another subject of Horizon’s fancy because he deploys devices similar to Horizon’s. Of course, Pathfinder is the Legend Horizon’s most interested in, being the only person—other than Ash—who might have any information about Newton.

The newest teaser for Season 13: Saviors shows Horizon dancing with the new Legend, Newcastle. The players have already started talking about Horizon’s flirty attitude towards Newcastle. However, in the same video, Gibraltar can also be seen quite charmed by Newcastle’s personality. Personally, I hope this doesn’t turn into another love triangle a la Valkyrie-Bangalore-Loba. Still, a romantic involvement between Newcastle and one of the Legends would definitely make for an entertaining story, all things considered.

Conclusion

“Ring’s closin’, and we ain’t in it. Move. Unless you’re a soulless heat-lovin’ snakebot.”

Did you know Horizon’s real name, Dr. Mary Somers, is a direct reference to a Scottish scientist named Mary Somerville? Mary Somerville, who lived between 1780 and 1872, was the first person to be officially called a scientist in print. The word “scientist” is believed to be created to describe her in the first place.

Horizon was first designed to be a mad scientist, similar to Lex Luthor, but later versions ended up with her being a single mom. After her Scottish heritage was decided, Elle Newlands breathed life into her with her amazingly natural performance. Newlands claims to be the biggest method actor in the Apex Legends voice cast, citing she “has spoken with a Scottish accent her entire life to stay in character.” She’s a gem.
