Ludochilus Sea Turtle
Description
Ludochilus Sea Turtle is a hybrid jewel between Ludisia discolor var. nigrescens and Anoectochilus formosanus. The result has the dark leaf of the Ludisia with the bright patterning of the Anoectochilus. In other words, a gorgeous plant.
Although the plants do bloom, they are grown primarily for their amazing foliage. Pictures do not do these plants justice, as the white veins shimmer as if they lit by neon when you see them in person. As with other jewel orchids, Ludochilus Sea Turtle is a terrestrial orchid. I prefer to grow them in moss which retains moisture while providing some air pockets around the roots as well. Grow intermediate to warm, KEEP MOIST, and put in moderate to low light. Did I say keep moist? High humidity is helpful, but not a requirement if you keep the media moist. Terrariums are excellent for growing this and all jewel orchids. Find an old fish tank and fill it with jewel orchids! What could be more beautiful?

Ludochilus ‘Sea Turtle’ is a hybrid between the two jewel orchids known as Ludisia discolor and Anoectochilus formosanus. Unconventionally, the genus name is a portmanteau of the two parents. Mature leaves are deep maroon with shimmering white to pink venation that quite resembles the shells of its namesake. This terrestrial Orchid will do best grown in a terrarium with medium to low light.
Care of Ludochilus ‘Sea Turtle’:
Part shade, temp. 50-90 degrees, 6 to 8 in. tall, will trail 10-12 in. easy grower, winter bloomer.

General Information and Care: Ludochilus Sea Turtle is another one of the many wonderful Jewel Orchids that Glass Box Tropicals offers. This species appreciates typical terrarium conditions in terms of moisture and temperature. It does however prefer slightly lower light levels than what most plants can tolerate making it a great choice for an understory plant. You may consider planting Bromeliads epiphytically above it, or allowing a medium to larger leaved vine to crawl up the background and shade the plant slightly. This species will typically flower once a year with white flowers on a 10-14″ tall flower stalk. If your tank is not that tall, do not worry, it will simply bend over when it reaches the top of the tank. Typically customers grow this species for the foliage instead of the flower though. As you can see from the photos, the foliage is quite stunning!
*If you have snails or slugs, we do not recommend this species. It seems to be a magnet for them and they can quickly kill the plant once in your terrarium.

Ludochilus ‘Sea Turtle’ is one of the so-called “Jewel Orchids”, terrestrial orchids grown primarily for their sparkling foliage, rather than flowers. This species is a hybrid between Ludisia discolor and Anoectochilus formosanus. The result is a stunning, deep purple-green foliage with pink venation in a pattern that looks not unlike the back of its namesake, the sea turtle.
