Anthony Fantano breaks down in tears reviewing Mac Miller’s “Good News”

“Internet’s busiest music nerd” Anthony Fantano was unable to hold back emotion while reviewing the track “Good News” from the upcoming Circles album from late rapper Mac Miller, the artist’s first posthumous album release.
In the modern age, no music artist is ever truly gone. Their legacy is often defined by their body of work, and for many, more work is released to the public even after they’ve passed on.
Another of these posthumous works is being released on January 17th, in the sixth studio album from artist Mac Miller, who tragically passed away in 2018. The new album is titled Circles, with the first single titled “Good News” released on January 9.
[ad name=”article1″]Anthony Fantano is a popular music reviewer who runs one of the most prominent music review YouTube channels in The Needle Drop, and also posts daily videos on his own personal channel Fantano.
On that channel, he does a show called Track Review, where he gives his first/second impression of new singles as they are released.
On his January 11th video, he reviewed the newest Mac track. After fast-forwarding through footage of his face listening to the song, viewers saw Anthony in tears, a rare moment of him struggling to maintain composure.
[ad name=”article2″]“S**t, oh my God, the f**k am I even supposed to say about this?” Fantano asks aloud while trying to pull himself together. This reaction was a stark contrast to Fantano’s review of Mac’s last album, Swimming, which he gave a 3 out of 10, earning him 28k dislikes on the video compared to less than 8k likes.

After collecting himself, he goes on to praise the instrumentals of the song, calling it “breezy, gentle, and sweet” before highlighting individual aspects of the instrumentals that he thought were perfect for “the very intimate and close right-in-your-ear sound of Mac’s voice.”
Fantano then dove into the “surreal, difficult to listen to” themes of Mac’s lyrics on the track, saying that the discussions about isolation, depression, and how “good news is the only news people want to hear” were very difficult to listen to.

Mac Miller, born James Allen McCormick, was a hugely popular rap artist throughout the 2010s. He was found dead in September 2018 from an accidental drug overdose. He was 26. Circles is his first posthumous full album released since his death.

MAC MILLER DISCOGRAPHY RANKED! INSPIRED BY @DoryLovesRap . I wanted to do something special for 300 followers and I love Mac Miller so one thing led to another and I wanted to rank his entire discography according to personal enjoyment. Here we go!
The Best Day Ever (6.75/10)- I feel like BDE didn’t have the charm and hits that KIDS had. It seemed rather average, Mac hadn’t found his identity yet and instead played it safe. Donald Trump and BDE Bonus are exceptions, being some of my favorite songs Mac has ever made.
Blue Slide Park (7/10). I’ve always had mixed feelings on Mac’s debut. On my recent relisten, I found myself pleasantly surprised at how much I ended up enjoying this album. It improved on where BDE lacked and Mac found an identity he could attach himself too. Although I (1/2)
prefer Mac’s more downtempo and more RnB music in his later years, this album has some of Mac’s best uptempo and hype songs. “Up All Night” and “One Last Thing” are my two favorite songs from this album. (2/2)
Macadelic (7.5/10). Originally my least favorite Mac project but it definitely grew on me. Mac experimented with some more RnB elements on this mixtape which I really appreciated but stuck to his hip hop roots. I feel that this mixtape while having some duds in the (1/3)
mixtape, there are some killer and underappreciated tracks in this mixtape. Tracks like “Fight the Feeling” with a pre-GKMC Kendrick Lamar go absolutely off the walls and happen to be some of my favorite Mac songs. The features are excellent on this album, bringing in (2/3)
Lil Wayne, Joey Bada$$, and Kdot. “Desperado” is another absolute banger in the tracklist with some of Mac’s best rapping to date. “America” absolutely goes HARD and Joey Bada$$’s feature sells the track for me. (3/3)
Faces (7.5). I really hope I don’t get flak for this but Faces is next. Faces has always weird for me. I love the mixtape but at the same time, I don’t find myself coming back to it nearly as often as other Mac projects. The production on this mixtape is one of Mac’s best (1/5)
out of all of his records. Like Macadelic, the features here are amazing even though they are relatively few and far in between. There are absolute legends on here like Earl, Vince Staples, and ScHoolboy Q. Some of the tracks I don’t really get down with like “55”, “Uber”, (2/5)
and “Thumbalina”. Even though I’m not a huge fan of these tracks, the production saves these songs. Every song just sounds great to listen to, even if I don’t particularly enjoy Mac’s lyrics, unfortunately. The killer features go absolutely HARD on this record. Goddamn, (3/5)
Earl Sweatshirt sells each song he is on. Mac really complements each artist he brings on and there isn’t a single bad feature on this mixtape. My favorite songs Funeral, Diablo, Rain, and New Faces v2 by far, each being contenders for some of my favorite Mac songs. (4/5)
GO:OD AM (8). What a project. After I listened to Swimming for the first time earlier in the year I listened to this album and was pleasantly surprised at how much I loved this album. Mac perfectly mixes hip hop with his emerging RnB style which is seen fully in Swimming (1/3)
and Circles. The album opens with “Doors” which starts the album off strong and then goes banger after banger from there right into “Brand Name”, “Two Matches”, “100 Grandkids”, and “Weekend”. The album slumps a bit for me but then picks back up when Perfect Circle/Godspeed (2/3)
comes on. This album has everything that a fan of Mac Miller could want from a project, it has hip hop, RnB, introspection, and Mac Miller having fun with music (3/3).
Watching Movies with the Sound Off (8.25/10). This is one of my favorite Mac projects of all time. It represents an important milestone in Mac Miller’s discography when he departed from the strict hip-hop style from previous projects and created more introspective music, (1/5)
talking about his problems with drug use. We get to see the human side of Mac more. We get to know him more as a human, seeing his flaws and his state of mind. Mac’s creativity comes in full swing right with the opening track “The Star Room” which has some of my favorite (2/5)
production from any Mac Miller song of all time. It is truly unique and is in my top 10 songs ever created by him. Having similar themes and features to Faces, I prefer this album to the mixtape. I find myself coming back to this album more and more than Faces and his other (3/5)
projects released previously. Despite having more serious themes, Mac does have tracks where he’s just having fun, seen in the track “O.K.” featuring Tyler, the Creator. Whenever I hear this track, it makes me smile hearing Mac and Tyler clearing not giving a fuck and (4/5)
having an absolute blast. It just goes off the rails and is an absolute blast to listen to. “Youforia” appears at the end of the record and is an absolute rollercoaster to listen to. It is so calming to listen to, I love it. (5/5)
Divine Feminine (8). Only one word can describe this album: horny. This album is such a fun listen. There’s amazing production, features, and Mac at his best. This album has the best features Mac has ever had on a project (1/4)
Where to even start with the features? Anderson .Paak is a cheat code and always has the best features and of course, he goes above and beyond in “Dang!”. Ty Dolla $ign in “Cinderella” has one of my favorite hooks of all time. “Cinderella” is hands down my favorite song Mac (2/4)
has ever made. Words cannot express how much I love this song. Everything about it to me is perfect. Every song just is so good, with the exception of “We” with CeeLo Green. I’ve never been a huge fan of that song and no matter how many times I listen to it, I just cannot (3/4)
bring me to enjoy it. Kendrick Lamar returns with “God is Fair, Sexy Nasty” and I really enjoy the track! It took time to enjoy the track but the more I listened to it, the more I’ve come to enjoy it. (4/4)
KIDS (8.5/10). KIDS is my favorite mixtape of all time. whenever I want to take a trip back to high school, I listen to KIDS. MAN, does this mixtape remind me of high school. I always have an amazing time listening to it. The vibes of this record are all feel-good vibes and (1/)
Mac’s lyrics about growing up and high school just send me into a flurry of happiness and nostalgia. “Knock, Knock” is one of my favorite song Mac has ever made, easily being in my top 10. “Senior Skip Day”, “The Spins”, “Kool-Aid and Frozen Pizzas”, and “Nikes On My Feet” (2/)
are such amazing songs. Mac’s hip hop style here isn’t comparable at all to BDE and honestly I find it far superior to BDE in every manner. I can’t explain it properly, but KIDS has always been a Mac record I find myself coming back to again and again (3/3).
Circles (9/10). My album of the year for 2020. This album got me to come around to Mac Miller, with watching Anthony Fantano cry to “Good News” made me interested in seeing what the fuss with Mac Miller was. I listened to “Good News” and immediately listened to the rest (1/3)
of Mac’s discography. Circles holds a special place in my heart, it is one of my go-to study albums and is so calming to listen to. It sounds as if Mac Miller had made peace with his life before his death. The production is just so amazing, especially on “Blue World”. Each (2/3)
