If you haven’t heard of Helen Turley, or tasted one of her wines, you’ve definitely not been paying close enough attention to the wines coming out of California in the last 10 years. She is arguably one of the most influential winemakers in the business, receiving critical acclaim for almost every wine she touches. Aside from her own boutique winery, Marcassin, which she runs with husband John Wetlaufer, Helen has been the consulting winemaker for some of the best wineries in the country – Colgin, Bryant Family, Martinelli – just to name a few.
Marcassin (french for ‘young wild boar’) is a VERY small winery – in fact it’s so small that the wines have actually been made at the Martinelli winery in Russian River Valley. Located on the Sonoma Coast, the Marcassin vineyard is planted to 50/50 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and is about 10 acres in size. Fruit for the other vineyard designated wines is sourced from other neighboring vineyards. Marcassin will always be a small winery; John & Helen feel the perfect size is 100 barrels, enough for 2,500 cases.
Helen’s winemaking philosophy is simple: great vineyards, meticulously farmed, limited yield, long hang time and natural yeast. She approaches every project with these same priorities.

Notes of caramelized citrus, hazelnut, apple blossom, lemon oil and orange marmalade are all present in this wine of dazzling aromatic and flavor dimension. It is full-bodied, again shows some wet pebbles (which I equate with minerality), vibrant acidity, and no real evidence of any oak. Much like the 2012, the finish goes on for 45+ seconds. This is another killer Chardonnay from Helen Turley and John Wetlaufer .

The 2013 Marcassin Chardonnay displays racy levels of unctuous fruit flavors (hints of lemon oil, grilled peaches, and caramelized oranges) on the introduction. The core of this masterpiece features a harmonious balance of captivating notes of honeycomb, lemon oil, butterscotch crème Brule (a Marcassin hallmark in my opinion), and hints of both umami and marzipan on the glorious finish. Initially tasted in October, 2018 this awe-inspiring new vintage promises even more grandeur in the next 3 – 5 years and should offer superb enjoyment through 2025.”
Additional tasters’ notes: This 2013 reminds me of a combination of favorite Marcassin vintages such as 2009 combined with stunning Puligny Montrachet bottlings by Leroy or Leflaive. Now that I’ve been fortunate to sample more than ten vintages of Marcassin Chardonnay, I can finally grasp why this coveted nectar truly stands apart from any other white wine in America. My team and I sample hundreds of collector level whites from California with many of the proprietors proclaiming they adhere to ‘Burgundian’ practices (tempting me to wonder if any actually understand the implications). Robert Parker has famously compared Marcassin to Burgundy’s Coche-Dury and Marcassin’s co-proprietor has compared their wines to Domaine de la Romanee Conti. I’m suspicious whether Marcassin would be mistaken for either of those wines in a blind tasting but ‘who cares’ as many American collectors would likely prefer Marcassin!

“What an extraordinary tasting this was at the Marcassin winery just north of Santa Rosa in Sonoma County. Just when you think the duo of Helen Turley and John Wetlaufer can’t make greater wines, they bowl over the taster with an array of exquisite quality that really must be tasted to be believed. Marcassin was probably California’s greatest Chardonnay after the famous Chalone winery fell from the pinnacle and onto hard times in the 1980s (and it has yet to rebound). Moreover, Marcassin set the bar for great Pinot Noir as well. And while both their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir have many competitors these days (from the likes of Harford Court, Mark Aubert, Kistler, Kongsgaard, DuMol, Thomas Brown, Peter Michael, Martinelli and Luc Morlet, to name a few), John Wetlaufer and Helen Turley remain the reigning geniuses of these two varietals in California. Certainly, their meticulous attention to detail in both the vineyard and in the winemaking and élevage account for the quality, but they were among the pioneers who saw the unlimited potential from the Sonoma Coast, now a relatively crowded neighborhood. This was a remarkable tasting that simply blew me away, and I have been following their wines since the first Marcassins were made in the early 1990s. By the way, any doubts about aging potential should be crushed immediately, as even in the most challenging vintages in California, Marcassin Chardonnays and Pinots have aged as well as, if not better than just about any grand cru white Burgundy. For example, 1995 and 1996 Chardonnays, particularly those from the Lorenzo Vineyard, are incredibly youthful and dynamic, and the Marcassin Estate Pinot Noir, even from vintages such as 1998, is simply amazing.
