This type of removal will be performed if there is a risk of skin cancer as it’s vital to ensure that all the cancerous cells are eliminated.
If any cells are left behind, then the mole can re-appear. Just as the microscopic moles we are born with can develop into visible moles, a few cells left behind after a mole removal can grow into a full-sized mole again. Moles are more likely to grow back if you have a shave excision, as the procedure won’t be attempting to remove the entire mole. You may still be able to see a darker patch after the procedure, as the main purpose is to flatten the mole rather than to get rid of it entirely. The mole can then keep growing and may form a small bump again.
Mole removal is permanent as long as long as you have a surgical excision to remove all of the cells. If there is a risk of skin cancer then it is important to have this type of removal, but if you are getting rid of a mole for cosmetic reasons then you may want to consider a shave excision instead. Mole removal is a safe and common procedure with thousands of moles removed every year in the UK for both medical and cosmetic reasons. Whatever the reason for having your mole removed, it’s good to be informed, to know why and when removal is best advised and what to expect.
Medical reasons for mole removal
The main reason for removing a mole is when there is a suspicion it may be a skin cancer. The majority of cancerous moles come from new spots: the American Academy of Dermatology states that less than one-third of melanomas come from an existing mole. By removing the mole and an area of normal skin around it, the chances of any cancerous or precancerous cells being left behind are reduced and the chances of preventing further growth are increased.
Cosmetic reasons for mole removal
A mole may be benign (noncancerous), however, you may wish to have a benign mole removed for cosmetic reasons. Perhaps the mole is on an exposed area of your body such as your face, neck arms and hands or another area of your body that causes discomfort or embarrassment. Mole Biopsy
Checking your moles often for any visual changes can help you spot risk factors early, but the safest option is to see a Dermatologist for regular check-ups, also known as mole screening. If your Dermatologist wants to check a mole for skin cancer or melanoma, they will perform a biopsy. The mole is removed in a procedure under local anaesthetic. You will be given a local anaesthetic by an injection at the place on your body where the biopsy will be taken from. The local anaesthetic may sting a little when it is injected, however the skin will then go numb and the operation should be pain-free.
The mole is then sent for examination under the microscope by a specialist pathologist who will determine if the mole is malignant or benign.
Methods of mole removal
The most common forms of mole removal are:
Shave excision
This procedure is best for raised moles that aren’t too deep in your skin.
The lesion is scraped or shaved off using a very sharp blade, leaving a graze or small depression in the skin
The bleeding is stopped using an electric cautery machine. This procedure does not require stitches
A scab will form over the surgery site and may take up to two weeks to fully heal
This procedure usually leaves a pink scar which fades into a faint white scar
Excision with stitches
This is for moles that lie flat on the surface.
The entire mole is removed with a small amount of normal skin around the edge.
There will be several stitches both above and below the skin surface.
The biopsy normally heals as a straight line that is usually three to four times the length of the lesion being removed.
What are the risks of having a skin biopsy?
All treatments and procedures have risks. The risks associated with having a skin biopsy are:
Pain
Local anaesthesia is usually effective for about two hours. The wound often feels tender after this time. Paracetamol tablets may be taken for pain relief as directed.
Bleeding
It is normal for a small amount of blood to come through the dressing. Any heavier bleeding can be stopped by applying firm pressure to the dressing for 15 minutes. If bleeding continues, you need to seek medical assistance.
If you have a large swelling under the wound, you may have had a more significant bleed. Any large swelling after surgery needs medical attention quickly, so go to your nearest Accident and Emergency department.
Bruising
It is normal to have some bruising around the surgery site, which will settle. The forehead, scalp and eyelids often bruise more easily than other sites.
Infection
Rarely a wound can become infected, and this will show up as increased pain, swelling, discharging pus and redness at the site of the wound 48-72 hours after surgery. If you are concerned that the wound has become infected, you should contact your Doctor. Infections can be treated with antibiotics. It is important that infected wounds are properly examined and treated.
Scarring
You will always have a scar following a skin biopsy as it is impossible to cut the skin without leaving a mark. The aim is always to leave you with the smallest scar that is possible for the procedure. Individuals will vary in the way they heal so not all scars will look the same.
The stitch line is likely to be red initially but this redness fades over a period of weeks to months. You will be left with a permanent scar in the area, the length and width depends of the type on operation performed and can sometimes be larger than the lesion being removed.
Some patients will produce a scar that is thicker than expected; this is called a hypertrophic or keloid scar. Certain areas such as the chest and back are more susceptible to this type of scarring.
Reducing scarring following removal of a mole
Your Dermatologist will provide advice with regards to minimising the risk of scarring and how to protect your skin during the healing process:
Minimise sun exposure and where possible avoid sun exposure completely.
Keep the area moist and clean. Petroleum jelly under a bandage may reduce scarring while the wound heals. Once the scar tissue has formed, it may be recommended to use a silicone gel or silicone strips for a few hours daily.
Once the wound has healed and the scab or crust is gone, you can massage the area gently. This invigorates the skin which stimulates collagen and aids the healing process.
In some cases, your Dermatologist may also suggest laser therapy or corticosteroid injections.
Who should remove your mole?
The most qualified person to decide if a mole should be removed is a Consultant Dermatologist. Only a suitably qualified professional such as a Consultant Dermatologist or Plastic surgeon who specialises in surgical skin procedures should remove a mole. This helps minimise the risk of scarring or anything being missed during the diagnosis and removal stages. Patients can either self refer direct to a reputable Dermatologist or Dermatology Clinic or be referred by their GP.

Mole removal can usually be done by a dermatologist in a single office visit. There are several techniques used to remove a mole:
Shave excision
During shave excision, your doctor will give you a local anesthetic to numb the area around the mole. Then, a thin tool similar to a razor is used to gently slice away your mole and some tissue beneath it. Facial Mole Laser Removal with Seoul Cosmetic Surgery & Banobagi
Hi guys! Today’s post is about my experience having 4 facial moles removed, courtesy Banobagi with cosmetic surgery concierge service, Seoul Cosmetic Surgery (a sponsored treatment in return for honest review). I’ve had some fantastic experiences with Seoul Cosmetic Surgery, and at no extra cost to the client, would urge any foreigner seeking dermatology/surgical procedures in Seoul to get in touch with them. Why laser removal?
There are various ways to remove moles. Laser removal is really only appropriate for smaller, flat moles that do no not need a biopsy. In the past I had a mole that needed a biopsy after strange changes and bleeding, and that had to be cut out surgically. This time the doctor looked at my moles, and decided laser removal would be fine. Laser removal is quick, zero downtime, and not too painful. There is a chance of scarring as with any removal method. Of course, you should always consult with a licensed medical professional regarding any kind of moles and mole treatment. Always get them checked!
Also a quick note, I wasn’t ashamed of my moles, and I’m not trying to encourage removal. It’s a personal choice, and completely up to the individual as to whether it’s something they’re interested in doing.
My Experience
I honestly could not have predicted how quick this process would be! I had a doctor consultation to check the moles, and then the selected moles were highlighted with a pen on my face. I opted for three smaller moles and one slightly larger. I was whisked away and after a cleansing facial, numbing cream was applied to all four moles. After about a 30 minute wait, I was led through for the two lasers.
The first laser was CO2 laser which is very common for mole removal. It stimulates the skin with heat and blitzes away the mole pigmentation. The second laser used was Erbium: Yag, and is more advanced because the doctor can adjust the heat level to minimize skin damage. This laser is basically a resurfacing tool. Using both together should be more effective for removal.
The lasers were somewhat painful in my opinion, but they literally were only on each mole for about 5 seconds. It was like a burning sensation, but just so fast it was very doable, even for me with my low pain threshold. You can smell burning, which of course isn’t pleasant.
Aftercare
The laser part of the treatment, carried out by the doctor, lasted about 5 minutes. The esthetician applied very small, transparent, healing patches to each mole removal area after the treatment. I was instructed to change these daily for the following 7 days to protect the areas from sun and infection. This was a very easy process and not any hassle. The patches were visible on my face, but didn’t stand out. Being in Korea, it’s very normal to walk around with these patches or pimple patches, however I feel like I’d have been slightly more conscious of them had I been wearing them back home. Still though, not a huge deal.

I was quite shocked by how red and sore the areas still looked 9 days later. However as soon as they had some air, they scabbed over and began to heal very quickly, within the next couple of days. It was possible to cover them with sunscreen and makeup so they weren’t very noticeable day to day. The sunscreen is SO important to avoid scarring and skin damage.
One more time…
Although I was happy with the treatment of the smaller moles, which were only still slightly pigmented because of the healing, I felt that my larger mole still looked very visible 6 weeks later. Banobagi were more than happy to do another session on that one, so I headed back to the clinic!
Here is what my mole looked like before the second session (the larger brown mole in the middle of my cheek), 6 weeks after the initial treatment. It was definitely less pigmented and smaller, but still obviously there:

Final Thoughts & Results
I’m going to be honest, I was a bit confused at first. It was hard to tell what was scarring/pigmentation, and what was still mole pigmentation. I felt like although the moles were definitely faded and size reduced, they weren’t completely gone. However now, nearly 4 months after the first treatment, and 2.5 months after the top up, I can really see that my moles are almost gone. I think because of my skin tone and type, I had lingering pigmentation after the removals, despite wearing lots of sunscreen and being very careful. Before any treatments, the three main moles I wanted treated (you can’t really see the fourth tiny one on photos so I’ve focussed on showing you these three):
6 weeks after first treatment of the three moles:
12 days after second treatment of the larger mole (no further work on the other two):
Now, 4 months after the first treatment of all three, and 2.5 months after second treatment on larger mole:
My final thoughts are that in Korea, at an estimated 22,000KRW per mole at Banobagi (roughly $20 or £15)(not including the other facial treatments or consultation), it’s definitely worth it, even if you just want your moles to look less noticeable. It’s so affordable, quick, and as long as you don’t mind wearing pimple patches and sunscreen, very little aftercare.
Now, my moles are barely noticeable (less noticeable IRL than in the photos, actually). I will note that the darker hair that grew out of the larger mole still grows (TMI?). Whilst I’m happy with my current results, if I’d had time before I left Seoul, I’d have had a second session on the two smaller moles, and a final third session on my larger. They’re still slightly visible. Over the past month the pigmentation has greatly reduced, and I think that’s been helped by my daily use of Vitamin C serum too. I’m going to continue with this and see if any more pigmentation can be reduced with products.
If you’re able to access this treatment at the affordable price of Banobagi, I would totally recommend it! Like I said, the moles are far less noticeable and I think the care, advice, and ease of the treatments was great. Thanks again to Bano and Seoul Cosmetic Surgery for their continued support. I decided to have a mole removal procedure here in Seoul last Friday, April 25. It has been a long wish to have the prominent mole in my face removed but I was hesitant. But when I asked permission from my husband, he easily said yes!
With my husband’s permission secured, I informed my family I am going to have my mole removed. I know it isn’t a major procedure. But, I still just wanted to inform them. At my age, I am laughing at the thought of making this like a big step.

The clinic’s name is 나의미래 or My Mirae. Mirae means “future”. You have a skin clinic’s name as “My Future”. You see, Koreans are known to give high value on their physical appearance. That’s why medical tourism was extremely profitable here in Korea pre-Covid19. Go to Gangnam and skin clinics line up a whole street offering the same services.
Anyway, I find the clinic’s name amusing especially knowing the cultural reason behind it. It’s catchy in Hangeul. I believe the clinic is a chain clinic and I am happy they have one here in Digital Media City where I live. This is where I bring my sons whenever they have skin problems.
Cost of Mole Removal Procedure
Mole removal is not an expensive procedure. 나의미래 or My Mirae charges 33,000-krw won per mole and per session. In my case, the doctor thinks my mole runs too deep in my skin. So, I would need to be back 3-4 times more to have it completely gone. I am looking forward there will be no more traces of it after my third or fourth session.
Payment was immediately secured after the anesthetic cream was applied to my face. I guess, it’s part of the ppali-ppali culture. No need to waste more time so better they get my payment during waiting time rather than after the whole procedure is done.

I had a consultation with the doctor and that is when he told me my mole is too deep. Once is not enough to take out the mole.
An anesthetic cream was applied to my mole. I waited for 40 minutes before the next procedure.
My mole was cauterized in less then 5 minutes.
