This is not RAC specific and could happen in Single Instances as well

if Flashback logs required are not available, as for example FLB logs was deleted using OS commands.

The following example shows symptoms seen in a RAC environment.

One of the RAC Instances does not come up, its looking for a Flash back log which has been accidently deleted.

Oracle is trying to turn on flashback database on startup automatically and failing with ORA-38760 as flashback log is missing.

Changes

Current flashback log deleted accidently from OS level.

ORA-38714: Instance recovery required.

Database is not opened, so we need to drop restore point that is created in the past. Find it and drop this restore point like following.

SQL> select NAME,SCN,GUARANTEE_FLASHBACK_DATABASE,DATABASE_INCARNATION# from v$restore_point; NAME ——————————————————————————– SCN GUA DATABASE_INCARNATION# ———- — ——————— RESTORE_POINT_17052019 5.9932E+12 YES 1 SQL> SQL> SQL> drop restore point RESTORE_POINT_17052019; Restore point dropped.

After Restore point is dropped, we can open database like following.

SQL> alter database open; Database altered.

ORA-38760: This database instance failed to turn on flashback database – The Geek Diary

Question: How to find the name of old restore points when the database fails to open with the below error?

ORA-38760: This database instance failed to turn on flashback database.

All flashback logs have been manually deleted but the database will not open because there is an old restore point that needs to be dropped but the precise name has been forgotten.

1. MOUNT the database and issue:

SQL>alter session set events ‘immediate trace name controlf level 9′;

2. Look for the trace file generated in the trace sub-directory of the ADR (11G) or the udump directory for releases prior to 11G. The first few lines will be similar to this:

DUMP OF CONTROL FILES, Seq # 4780 = 0x12ac V10 STYLE FILE HEADER: Compatibility Vsn = 186646528=0xb200000 Db ID=4058109829=0xf1e1d785, Db Name='[DBNAME]’ Activation ID=0=0x0 Control Seq=4780=0x12ac, File size=624=0x270 File Number=0, Blksiz=16384, File Type=1 CONTROL

3. Any restore points will be listed in the section: NORMAL RESTORE POINT RECORDS:

NORMAL RESTORE POINT RECORDS *************************************************************************** (size = 212, compat size = 212, section max = 2083, section in-use = 1, last-recid= 1, old-recno = 1, last-recno = 1) (extent = 1, blkno = 198, numrecs = 2083) Earliest record: RECID #1 Recno 1 Record timestamp 01/24/11 15:37:22 RESTORE POINT #1: restore point name: guarantee flag: 0 incarnation: 1next record 0 restore point scn: 0x0000.000e8733 01/24/2011 15:37:22 Latest record: RECID #1 Recno 1 Record timestamp 01/24/11 15:37:22 RESTORE POINT #1: restore point name: guarantee flag: 0 incarnation: 1next record 0 restore point scn: 0x0000.000e8733 01/24/2011 15:37:22

ORA-38760 While starting an Oracle Database

This is a quick post about an issue that I faced while trying to start one database yesterday.

When I was trying to open one 12cR1 database, I got the following error:

SYS SQL>alter database open;

alter database open

*

ERROR at line 1:

ORA-38760: This database instance failed to turn on flashback database

The database status was “mounted”:

From the alert log, it is clear that flashback mode is enabled in the database and someone has mistakenly deleted flashback log physically. So, I tried to disable the flashback mode as follows:

After that, I tried to open the database again but I received the same set of the above errors.

Did someone create a restore point, let us check:

So, this is the reason behind this issue. There is a guaranteed restore point, and its flashback logs were physically deleted. Let us drop this restore point:

Now let us try to open the database:

Done !

Thanks

Ahmed

ORA-38760: This database instance failed to turn on flashback database

I faced this error message while opening my database, after restoring the database from a cold backup (OS level copy of all database files). I realized that when I backed up my database, it had flashback feature turned on and there was also a guaranteed restore point at the time I took the backup. And this time when I was trying to open this database, there were no old flashback logs available in fast recovery area.

ODG — ORA-38760 This database instance failed to turn on flashback

In my last post, I resolved an ODG issue that the primary server IP was wrong on the standby server. I walked away and one hour later, I was told the redo apply was still not working. “Something else is wrong?” I was thinking.

So I looked at the system again. I saw the error ORA-38760 in the alert log

2020-06-12T15:48:29.542757-04:00 ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE DISCONNECT NODELAY Starting background process MRP0 2020-06-12T15:48:29.574028-04:00 MRP0 started with pid=46, OS id=6800 2020-06-12T15:48:34.605048-04:00 Started logmerger process 2020-06-12T15:48:34.620654-04:00 PR00 (PID:2948): MRP0: Background Media Recovery terminated with error 38760 2020-06-12T15:48:34.620654-04:00 Errors in file C:\PROD\DATA\LOGS\ORACLE\DIAG\diag\rdbms\PROD2\PROD\trace\PROD_pr00_2948.trc: ORA-38760: This database instance failed to turn on flashback database 2020-06-12T15:48:35.729969-04:00 Recovery Slave PR00 previously exited with exception 38760 2020-06-12T15:48:35.823714-04:00 Errors in file C:\PROD\DATA\LOGS\ORACLE\DIAG\diag\rdbms\PROD2\PROD\trace\PROD_mrp0_6800.trc: ORA-38760: This database instance failed to turn on flashback

The trace files didn’t contain too much information other than the ORA-38760 error itself. There were messages like below because OS is Windows:

Required IPC RDMAV_FORK_SAFE environment not set Required IPC RDMAV_HUGEPAGES_SAFE environment not set

According to MOS note: 19c Database On Windows – ADR Is Flooded By Linux-related Trace Files (Doc ID 2588705.1), “This is not an error or warning in particular.”

The standby database has flashback_on set to yes. It looked like Oracle tried to turn it on after the media recovery started, but failed to do so for some reasons. Then recovery service terminated. So I decided to turn it off and see how it goes:

SQL> alter database flashback off; Database altered. SQL> alter database flashback on; alter database flashback on * ERROR at line 1: ORA-38706: Cannot turn on FLASHBACK DATABASE logging. ORA-38788: More standby database recovery is needed

Now it’s clear why Oracle complained about “ORA-38760: This database instance failed to turn on flashback”. It was because the standby had fallen behind too much. And because of failing to turn on flashback as configured, redo log could not be applied — kind of like a deadlock. What I needed to do was to just start the media recovery with flashback off.

SQL> ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE DISCONNECT NODELAY;

and wait for the redo applying to catch up. During this process, I see the warning ORA-16853 in ODG broker because DelayMins is set to “0”. It would disappear when the log gap was closed.

DGMGRL> show configuration; Configuration – DG_PROD Protection Mode: MaxPerformance Members: PROD1 – Primary database PROD2 – Physical standby database Warning: ORA-16853: apply lag has exceeded specified threshold Fast-Start Failover: Disabled Configuration Status: WARNING (status updated 43 seconds ago) DGMGRL> show database “PROD2” Database – PROD2 Role: PHYSICAL STANDBY Intended State: APPLY-ON Transport Lag: 0 seconds (computed 1 second ago) Apply Lag: 1 day(s) 24 minutes 33 seconds (computed 1 second ago) Average Apply Rate: 10.81 MByte/s Real Time Query: OFF Instance(s): mvf Database Warning(s): ORA-16853: apply lag has exceeded specified threshold Database Status: WARNING DGMGRL> show database “PROD2” DelayMins DelayMins = ‘0’

After the primary and the standby was in sync, I stopped redo apply on the standby, turned on flashback, then started redo apply again. The issue was fixed by then.

SQL> alter database recover managed standby database cancel; SQL> alter database recover managed standby database disconnect nodelay;
