In April, Dubspot hosted a special ‘Production 101′ workshop at the Downtown Independent in Los Angeles with Ableton Certified Dubspot Instructors Thavius Beck, Professor Nalepa, and a few special guests. The evening focused predominently on new technology including the debut of Keith McMillen Instruments’ QuNeo controller and a special overview of Teenage Engineering’s OP1 by Thomas White (Natural Rhythm).
The the first part of this video recap, Dubspot’s Thavius Beck debuts Keith McMillen’s QuNeo controller, a dynamic touch-sensitive 3D MIDI controller that features velocity, pressure and location data on each of its pads. Beck explains some of the QuNeo’s features and uses the controller in a performance environment with Ableton Live.

First off, the microUSB cable is a deal breaker. I’m beginning to think that there’re no such thing as quality connectors (cable, sure). So go cheap, rather than premium/rugged, and buy multiples as the connection becomes loose, and it will. This is probably a good trade-off: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01 … NGWD4FMQNO I created a nice safety loop with some sugru surrounding a key chain in the corner.You cannot reverse the range of the controls, so using the long fader to x-fader while turning the unit around, such that the cable extends directly to the left side ports on a laptop is not an option.While that’s out of the way, there are very few parameters in live that you want ganged with a 3D control. And you cannot isolate a note value (nor assign tap to a CC) from pressure values, even if quneo was implemented with a threshold value. And the corners are not so isolated that they won’t engage something sympathetically when using the “tilt” of the pad. So they won’t work as a dashboard for clyph scripts nor device i/o. You’ll end up disengaging much of the dimensionality of the quneo.And you can’t Remote Script the assigned x/y of audio effects nor the native interface for vsts in ableton. So there goes all those nifty pads. The jog dials make for decent tap tempo pads; use a library card around the corners if they get stuck transmitting notes. And the width of long fader can be used for any of your morphing synths and effects.The conclusion may be that it serves much better as a keyboard instrument, for expression rather, than as a general controller.
