January 25, 2007 Squeeze a massive 8.2 litre supercharged V8 monster truck engine with as much power as a Bugatti Veyron into a motorcycle and you have the Rapom V8, the product of the vivid imagination of 44-year old British engineer Nick Argyle. Unlike many who design such wilderbeasts , Argyle has manifested a fully functional and road registered version of what is world’s most powerful roadgoing motorcycle. Running on alcohol, the 1000 bhp returns just four miles per gallon, and it’s transportation brief usually only covers the 10 mile journey to a local drag racing strip. With that sort of power available at a twist of the wrist, the monster bike requires a super long chassis end every bit of its kerb weight of 1000lb in order to stop the bike flipping under hard acceleration.

The unique bike was created in a small garage in the Cotswolds, its conception spawned from the unusual marriage of convenience and naivety, says its builder.

After selling the chassis of his monster truck, Nick Argyle was searching for a much smaller project. He said: “I didn’t have the same workshop space I had when I built the truck. I only had the house garage so it had to be a bike. I was going to buy a new engine for the project but my wife told me to use the one that was still in a garage – a monster truck engine! Despite its size, I thought why not?’

The impressive Rapom V8 will make its public show debut at the MCN London Motorcycle Show on the Harrison Billet stand at ExCeL on February 1-4, 2007.

What to do with that spare Mopar big block you’ve got left over from your monster truck project? Why, let’s build a motorcycle!

The unique bike was created in a home garage in Broadway, Worcestershire, UK, at a cost of £40,000. It was spawned from the unusual marriage of convenience and naiveté, says its builder.

Electrician Nick Argyle was searching for a much smaller project after selling the chassis of his monster-truck.

He said: “I didn’t have the same workshop space I had when I built the truck. I only had the house garage so it had to be a bike. I was going to buy a new engine for the project but my wife told me to use the one that was still in the garage – the monster-truck engine! Despite its size, I thought ‘Why not?’”

At the heart of the road-legal machine is an 8.2-litre, supercharged V8 monster-truck engine that develops 1200HP. The bike runs on pure alcohol and with a fuel consumption rate of 4 miles to the gallon it has a monster appetite too.

The monster weighs in at 450kg with a super-long wheelbase to prevent it flipping backwards under hard acceleration, but even then, power-to-weight ratio is twice that of, say, a GSX-R1000 or ZX-10R.

The bike can reach 0 to 60 mph in 2 seconds and can travel at 220mph, which is why if you ever meet Mr. Argyle at a stoplight, you probably shouldn’t try to race him down the street. Rapom V8 kicks out 1200 horse power at max boost from the supercharger and will truly reach its full potential on a drag strip like Santa Pod raceway.

Rapom V8 specifications:

Engine: 8193cc Mopar big block, tuned by ICE Racing.

Supercharger: 8.71 Littlefield blower.

Power: 750-900kW (1000-1200 HP) depending on blower speed and fuel type.

Gearbox: Two-speed with reverse API gearbox.

Frame: 32mm-diameter steel tube using the motor as a stressed member, kept short by running the blower belt through forks.

Wheels: 15 x 5.5 Prostar with 180/70 Metzeler Marathon at front, 15 x 15 Prostar with 29×18.5 Micky Thompson Sportsman Pro at rear.

Brakes: Dual Harrison “Big” billet six-piston calipers at front, Harrison “Mini” billet six-piston caliper at rear.

In this instance, however, it’s supremely cool (and strange) to see an engine sitting there looking just as it would under the hood of a car, but with a set of handlebars and a drive chain connected to it. There’s no performance data, but some rough math assuming a 1500lb total weight (blown Mopar big blocks aren’t light — the engine alone probably weighs 1000 pounds) and using the provided horsepower figure of 1200 gives an estimated quarter-mile ET of 6.27 seconds with a trap speed of 217 MPH.Damn.We’d be curious to see actual ETs, as we just scratched a few things out on paper without knowing gearing or the actual weight using the handy formulas in our Auto Math Handbook . The Rapom V8 is the most powerful motorcycle in Britain and it runs on pure alcohol.

With a wallet busting fuel economy figure of four miles to the gallon, it’s just as well the bike is only used on the roads for a 10 mile journey to a local drag racing strip.

At the heart of the road legal machine is a massive 8.2 litre supercharged V8 monster truck engine that develops 1,000 BHP from a ludicrous 8,193cc engine – equivalent to five Mini Cooper engines and capable of arm-wrenching performance akin to 10 Supersports 600cc motorbikes bolted together.

With that sort of power available with a twist of the wrist the monster bike tips the scales at over 1000lb and features a super-long chassis in order to stop the bike flipping on hard acceleration.

After spending hours in the garage trying to get your end-can to fit properly, you’ll appreciate the work that’s gone into the UK’s most powerful motorcycle, the Rapom V8. Created by Nick Argyle, a 44-year old engineer from the Cotswolds, the huge 8.2 litre supercharged engine comes from Argyle’s ‘Monster Truck’ and produces over 1000bhp, which we need not mention, is a figure more than five times more than the output of Kawasaki’s ZZR-1400, the world’s fastest production motorcycle.

The Rapom V8 was created in Argyle’s garage after he sold his ‘Monster Truck’ chassis and wanted to build another small project. A bike it had to be. Argyle told Visordown: “I didn’t have the same workshop space I had when I built the truck. I only had the house garage so it had to be a bike. I was going to buy a new engine for the project but my wife told me to use the one that was still in the garage ” the monster-truck engine! Despite its size, I thought ‘Why not?'”

One of the best known, the Y2K, is one of them, with more than 320 horsepower offered by its helicopter turbine. More recently, crazier, completely surreal, Dodge has raised the tone with a 500 hp Tomahawk, powered by the engine of the famous Viper. But these machines were not enough for Nick Argyl, an Englishman like no other who pushed the limits of mechanical madness.

First, he stuffed it with ethanol, to make it all fire. And then he grafted a compressor to this mill. Now you know that you have to be completely barge to dare to open wide. The numbers like the look of this bike are just scary. It’s huge, it’s a monster, and it’s super well done. But what about the tubular steel frame of all this power? He must be as much in agony as the rear tire. Square, disproportionate, it is up to him to withstand twice the power of a Ferrari. And what about the tubular swingarm, as beefy as the chassis – it seems completely lost in this mechanical hell. And for the transmission, it is not even a gimbal that collects the potato…. No, no, it’s a very classic chain; well, a little reinforced. A hoist chain should resist hardly better.

As long as we’re nuts, let’s go through with it. Is it a reinforced Superbike swingarm or a MotoGP Ohlins pressurized inverted fork that takes care of the front end? What dale !

If the steering column and the triple trees seem able to withstand a tank, the fork, on the other hand, is a completely standard model, finished with a single brake disc and a modest 6-piston brake caliper..

The design is as scary as the braking capabilities of the machine. It’s violent, both insane and awesome. And if the front has as much panache and bitterness as a Terminator, the rear shell seems the result of less metallic work, more carnal, with this posterior mixing the curves of the backsplashes of Suzuki Hayabusa and MV-Agusta F4.
