The free camera encyclopedia

The FF-70 is an autofocus compact camera for 35mm film, introduced by Ricoh in 1985 as the successor to their FF-3 AF. This camera is also known as the FF-90 in North America. In Japan, it was widely marketed with the name of Myport LUI. A version with a date back was also available, and it was called the FF-70D or the FF-90D.

“The best that modern technology can offer”, that was the claim of Ricoh when they introduced this camera at the time. What makes the FF-70 look different from its predecessor the most is its huge LCD control panel located on top of the camera. It provides information about the exposure, film speed (ISO), battery condition, backlight compensation etc at a glance. In addition to the very informative LCD panel, the FF-70 had some notable features that set it apart from ordinary compact point-n-shoots; a fast Rikenon 35mm f/2.8 lens, 2 to 1/500s shutter speed, a wide film speed range, DX-code/non-DX-code film capability, +2EV exposure compensation etc.

Learn more about the camera and films for it

The Ricoh FF-70 is a 35mm camera. It was introduced by Ricoh in 1985 as the successor to the FF-3 AF. The Ricoh FF-70 was also sold as the FF-90 in America and the Myport LUI in Japan.

A Rikenon Lens 35mm f2.8 lens is installed in the snapshot camera. Focusing does not have to be done manually thanks to autofocus.

Quite unusual for a camera of this type is the large screen that displays information such as film speed, exposure, loading status and more.

All 35mm films (eBay / Amazon) with a sensitivity of ISO 25 to ISO 1600 can be used in the Ricoh FF-70. It is possible for the camera to read the ISO value based on the DX code, or you can set it yourself.

If the light is too low, the built-in flash can be activated. A self-timer can also be turned on, as well as a +2EV exposure compensation.

Two AA batteries (eBay / Amazon) power the Ricoh FF-70.

Some Ricoh compact cameras with a more serious lens from the FF series:

The Ricoh FF-3 AF (1982) and FF-3 AF Super (1984),

the Ricoh FF-70 aka FF-90 (1985),

the Ricoh FF-700 aka FF-900 or FF-90 Super (1987)

and some accessories.

I think that there are basically two models. I can’t find any difference between the FF-3 and its Super version but other writings, e.g. ASA/ISO instead ASA only, so this is the first model. The FF-700 is an FF-70 with a different battery compartment, it takes a CRP2 type instead of 2 mignon cells, so the camera body is a bit longer and bulkier. Besides this the FF-700 has a socket for a remote control, but everything else is the same, so FF-70 and FF-700 are model number two.

Some specs:

FF-3 : 3.2/35 mm lens, 1/8-1/500 s shutter speed, 1 m nearest focus distance, 25-1000 ASA

FF-70(0):2.8/35 mm lens, 2 – 1/500 s shutter speed, 0.8 m nearest focus distance, 25-1600 ASA (DX)

All cameras have a lens with 5 elements in 5 groups, the shutter is in between the elements. All cameras show the shooting distance in the viewer with luminous symbols. All cameras has a flash with guide number 12 (m). The FF-3 has an underexposure-warning and an off/on-switch for the flash, the FF-70(0) have a Nikon-L35AF-like automatic flash: on low light situations a small button pops up above the flash and switches the flash on, when the shutter button is pressed halfway, you can’t fire the shutter until the flash is loaded. If you want to switch it on for some fill-in light, you’ll have to darken the light sensor and press the shutter release button half-down. If you want to switch the flash off for some night shots, you’ll have to press the button above the flash down while taking your shot. The FF-3 and FF-70 take two AA batteries, the FF-700 a 6 Volts CRP2. The FF-70(0) has a back light compensation, +2 EV.

About the FF-70 and FF-700

They have the biggest LC-display I have ever seen on a camera like this and they make entirely use of the DX-code. They show(!) you the determined film speed, the number of frames on the film and much more, they even have a show-off-mode “display”. In this mode the LCD shows everything it can, it has no further function.

The ISO button is for setting the the film speed on films without DX-code, you can’t override the DX-code. If you want to do so, you have to insulate the electrical contacts of the film cartridge with some tape, e.g.

The FF-70 and FF-700 have problems with the film advance. Sometimes they wind the film back, sometimes they wind it three frames forward, like when loading a new film. I can’t reproduce this behaviour, but I think it appears when the camera is shaken a lot, e.g. on a long transport.

I have an extra picture about this item.

The FF-700 has a socket for a remote control. The plug of my Canon remote control fits and it works. It is a common 2.5 mm stereo jack, shown on the right side of the picture. Normally the remote control works in two steps (1. metering, 2. releasing) like the shutter button, but here it does both steps at once. The point of interest is: is the flash disabled when the shutter is fired with the remote control? The answer is no! So this feature is kinda useless …

The close-up adaptor CL-9

You can see the auxiliary lens kit on the lower right corner, provided with the FF-70. You can clip it onto the camera, there are optical elements not only for the lens, but for the AF-system and the exposure meter too. There is also a translucent shield which covers the flash light, it reduces the light to the right amount. The new focus distance is 0.3 to 0.4 meters, therefore the string of the lens cap is 0.35 m long.

I took some shots with the adapter, but the results were not convincing. The adapter fits the FF-700 too, but I didn’t tested it. It isn’t suitable for the FF-3.

Image quality

The image quality of the FF-70(0) is excellent. Contrast and resolution like the Olympus XA, better than the Yashica T5. I didn’t tried the FF-3 so far.
