[Nov 14, 2000] Ralf Berzinski Intermediate Strength: Good quality, very good lens. Some really nice features (described in the review summary). Weakness: Loud and slow power zoom, useless bulb mode, manual is too superficial. The 38-90mm S-VarioApogon zoom lens shows good contrast and sharpness. I made a little test to compare it to Tamron/Pentax 28-200 zoom lens: Using tripod I photographed a full newspaper opening with different zooms (38, 50, 90) and different apertures (5.6, 8, 11), and the usual results were obviously different: with the Rollei lens the text was readable, with the other lens I had to guess what it says.This camera is hard to use if you have to react to situations fast. The power zoom is quite loud (almost sounds like rewinding film) and takes time to go from 38mm to 90mm. The auto focus also is not of the fastest I have seen, but seems to be very accurate. Regarding focusing: I like very much how the camera focuses in darkness: it projects a red line pattern and uses it for focusing. Very convenient.
Metering: It took me some time to find out how it works. In the beginning I was assuming that it is multi-zone metering because the manual says so. I found out that my slides often were overexposed or underexposed. Then I carefully examined meter’s reactions to the light and dark objects in view and my conclusion is that the meter is behaving very much like a spot meter. It means that if you are using the automatic mode, you have to find an object that is not dark and not light and use the exposure locking. Or, if you are using tripod, measure the exposure in shutter or aperture priority automatic mode and then go to the manual mode. I think that a spot meter is a great thing to have, I just wish the manual explained that the meter works this way.
The camera does not have a cable release and there is no possibility to attach it. If you are working from tripod, you have to use the infrared release that is built into the lens-cap. After pressing the infrared release button you have to wait for about two seconds before the shutter fires. The problem with the infrared release is that it does not work in the bulb mode, and to use the bulb mode you have to hold the camera’s shutter release button with your finger. I could not believe in this and I contacted technical support from Rollei Germany. They said yes, the camera’s shutter release button is the only way to use the bulb mode.
The camera is not easy to use in ambiguous focusing situations where you have both close and distant objects close to the center of the viewfinder. The camera tells you that it found focus but does not tell to what distance it focused, and there is no visual way to check it. The solution is to switch to the manual focusing mode and to get focus confirmation at the desired distance.
What I miss very much is a decent lens hood that I could attach to this camera’s lens. The lens cap is quite big and heavy (because the infrared release is inside it) and easily comes off. Once I accidentally dropped it into a mountain creek. After disassembling and drying in sun it worked fine again. The control dials on the camera turn very easily and that is convenient when you are taking pictures but inconvenient when you take the camera out of the camera bag and have to check all the dials for proper positions. And it is too easy to switch on the date imprint while you are taking the camera out of the bag. Customer Service They answer my questions promptly but are not very descriptive. The Rollei QZ 35T: First Impressions
I had been after one of these cameras for some time. I eyed the beauty in the case every time I visited the camera shop in Hong Kong. The store owner even let me play around with it on several occasions. I enjoyed its smooth curves, its feel and beautiful looks. This is a camera, by the way. The store owner boasted repeatedly of a skylight filter on the front of the lens. I couldn’t have cared less. I wanted this camera. That was six month ago. On every visit, we talked money, but he wouldn’t budge from his price. On a recent visit to the store, I had bought a case for a Leica IIIf. The case attached to the camera with a 1/2-inch (or is that 3/8) tripod screw. My camera has the smaller socket. So the case had to go back to the store. I had in the back of my head (OK, maybe it was in the front of my head) that I’d make another try for the Rollei, so I got money out of the bank. Surprisingly, he agreed to my price. Twenty minutes later, I had the Rollei QZ 35T in my possession — the full pack, including the box, the strap, owner’s manual, various warranty and ownership cards, flash and soft cases for the camera and flash. Immediate disappointment: The owner’s manual is in Korean! Well, that’s not going to help me, so I downloaded an English version of the manual, printed it out and stuck it into my bag. I picked up two sets of batteries and some film, and I was set for some semiserious photography with my new camera. Initial impressions: The smooth curves that I loved in the camera store keep growing on me. Man, this is one beautiful camera. To me, I think it’s one of the most elegant cameras I own.
I don’t care much for how the strap attaches. If it were up to me, I’d have put both lugs on the end of the camera, so it would hang vertically from your neck. The right-side end of the strap interferes somewhat with holding the camera properly. I’m divided between the security of using the neck strap and the comfort of holding the camera.
The flash is sort of cool. I don’t use flash that much in photography, so the fact that it’s not TTL (through the lens) doesn’t really bother me. I wonder how it will fare as a fill-flash unit. Oh yes, it needs an auto-off function.
Start-up time is very good. The lens cap is a mixed bag. I can see myself losing that really quickly. I think I’ll find something smaller and cheaper and keep the lens cap cum remote control in the bag. The remote control is cool, but I’m almost positive the lens cap will fall off and be gone for good.
The camera’s fit and finish is exquisite. The Rollei name is deeply engraved into its titanium case and filled with a high-gloss black paint. Other markings also are engraved, so a year or a decade from now, the numbers and writings won’t have rubbed away from use.
The controls operate with a precision you don’t see in a mass-market camera. That’s probably why it costs so much when it was first introduced.
The lens range is OK. Not stellar, but OK. I’d have liked a little more room on the wide end, maybe down to 28. Still, 38-90 is a decent range — even in this day of 28-200 zooms. It’s reasonably fast at f/2.8 at the wide end and f/5.6 at 90mm. I’d have accepted a bit more weight to get it down to f/4.0. I’m going to stop with the accolades. Suffice to say, it’s a superlative camera in every sense. The F.A. Porsche design is unquestionably excellent, and it’s matched by what appears to very high construction quality. By the way, I scrapped the filter. It was unimpressive and turned out to be little more than a filter ring against a optical UV glass disk.
Rollei QZ35W / QZ35T
The QZ35 cameras were titanium-bodied point-and-shoot models from Rollei, styled by F.A. Porsche and offered in two versions. The QZ35W version had a 28–60 mm zoom (offering greater wide-angle coverage) while the QZ35T included a 38–90 mm lens (offering more telephoto reach). These were large and substantial cameras compared to the typical autofocus compact, particularly as electronic flash was available only as a separate, matching unit. It has a metal focal-plane shutter with speeds of up to 1/8000. It can be used in fully automatic or manual mode. It has program mode along with manual, shutter and aperture priority exposures modes. The top of the camera does not have a hot shoe, instead it has a LCD, and two dials one for shutter speed and the other for focusing distance. Press down onto the dial and it will raise allowing you to turn and change the settings. The dials also have a noticeable clicking sound. The lens barrel has the A (auto) mode setting as well as aperture settings. There are many settings that can be changed that are not common on compact 35mm cameras. The lens cap features a remote controlled shutter release. Quartz date back is standard. The camera uses 2x 3v CR2 battery and the flash unit uses 2x CR123A.
