I am trying to connect to an Oracle 11g XE databse using Oracle SQL Developer. However, I am getting the following exception:

Error starting WebSphere with Cognos WAR/EAR deployed: Package oracle.jdbc.driver is sealed

Problem In a Cognos installation with IBM WebSphere, an error appears in the cognos_install\logs\cogserver.log when starting the WebSphere server where the Cognos WAR\EAR is deployed.

Symptom CM-CFG-5063 A Content Manager configuration error was detected while connecting to the content store.

Sealing violation: package oracle.jdbc.driver is sealed

Runtime Exception stack trace:

java.lang.SecurityException: sealing violation: package oracle.jdbc.driver is sealed

Cause The WebSphere server in use contains other deployed applications. In this case, one or more of those applications have been deployed with the odbc14.jar. The Cognos WAR\EAR deploys with the odbc14.jar as well in the webapps\p2pd\WEB-INF\lib directory. The odbc14.jar deployed with the other applications is an exact Copy of the cognos file.

Resolving The Problem Remove the odbc14.jar from the webapps\p2pd\WEB-INF\lib directory. Then re-create the EAR\WAR, and redeploy the new EAR\WAR. Cognos should start successfully.

Oracle JDBC Sealing Violation

Oracle Commerce 11.2 now supports JDK 1.8. I ran into the following error when running CIM with WebLogic 12.1.3 and JDK8:

This error is normally attributed to multiple versions of the same class on the CLASSPATH, however in this case without a pre classpath being set, CIM derives all the CLASSPATH elements itself, and I couldn’t find any duplications.

As we use either JBoss or WebLogic we pull in the JDBC driver from a Maven repository via a Gradle configuration, so I normally supply this version to the JDBC library path for CIM. You can of course also use the JDBC driver in the Oracle XE installation:

/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/xe/jdbc/lib/ojdbc6.jar

or from the WebLogic installation itself:

/Oracle/Middleware/oracle_common/modules/oracle.jdbc_12.1.0/ojdbc*.jar

The mistake I made of course was to use the ojdbc6.jar with JDK8 as I have been doing for JDK7 and the supported driver for Oracle XE.

Using the ojdbc7.jar with JDK8 resolves the sealing violation issue.
