Love and Leashes (Korean: 모럴센스; lit. Moral Sense) is a 2022 South Korean romantic comedy film, based on the webtoon Moral Sense by Gyeoul. The film directed by Park Hyun-jin and starring Lee Jun-young, Seohyun and Seo Hyun-woo, depicts a romance between Ji-hoo, who has everything perfect but has secret BDSM desires, and Ji-woo, a competent public relations team member who finds out about his secret. It was released on Netflix on February 11, 2022, to coincide with Valentine’s Day.[2]

In February 2021, at the Netflix content road show ‘See What’s Next Korea 2021’, they announced the production of a romance film tentatively titled as Moral Sense.[8]

Casting [ edit ]

On March 21, 2021, Netflix confirmed through a press release that it would distribute another Korean original film Moral Sense, based on webtoon of the same name. It further revealed that the romance film would be directed by Park Hyun-jin, and have Seohyun and Lee Jun-young as main leads.[9][4]

The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 80% approval rating, based on 5 reviews with an average rating of 6.20/10.[11]

Kim Junmo writing for OhmyNews stated that the film has a message and the attributes of a romantic comedy. Kim wrote, “as it is a story about the minority taste of BDSM, the difference between likes and dislikes is a limitation of this film.” Kim opined, “the barrier to entry is high. Above all, scenes containing BDSM’s actions are the core of sympathy between the two main characters, but it is difficult to universally provide emotional pleasure, catharsis, and excitement.”[12] Kate Sánchez rated the film with 8.5 out of 10 and wrote, “Love and Leashes is sweet and sensual. It’s a wholesome look at boundaries and love while also taking time to explore kink in a context that doesn’t treat it as something dangerous or abnormal… one of the best representations of kink I’ve seen in a film.”[13] Ricardo Gallegos of La Estatuilla praised the performances of Seohyun and direction stating, “Park Hyun-jin does a good job of weaving the threads of the story together and adding a touch of respectful humor to the story’s development.” Concluding Gallegos wrote, “Although “Amarrados al amor” manages to use classic and conventional elements of the romantic comedy genre, it stands out thanks to its sweet handling of the central relationship, the sensuality that it transmits in its exploration of sexual freedom and its honest intentions to inform and break taboos.”[14]

James Marsh of the South China Morning Post rated the film with 3 out of 5 stars and praised the performances of lead pair writing, “Seohyun and Lee Jun-young deliver sweet and wholesome performances”. Marsh opined that the film has made “efforts to normalise BDSM and erase its stigma,” and it has come out as “a sweet and well-meaning workplace romance”. March concluded “Love and Leashes is a commendable effort to lift the blindfold on a stigmatised subculture, albeit without the reward of any lasting gratification.”[15]

Yeon Woo Jin plays a very introverted and shy CEO named Eun Hwan Ki. He tries to avoid people at all costs until he meets Chae Ro Woon (Park Hye Soo) who starts to work at his company. She is the complete opposite of Hwan Ki and does not seem to leave him alone. When they say opposites attract, this particular series embodies that saying. Seeing these two come together and eventually fall in love is the perfect story. Not to mention that epic shower kiss scene. You might have seen it circulating online because it was literally steamy as it took place in a shower tub. You could feel the heat from where you are.

Although underrated, “1% Of Something” has quickly become a must-watch K-drama for many, and a big reason is that post-shower kiss between Ha Seok Jin and Jun So Min. Although the story is pretty conventional in that it involves a contract relationship between a chaebol and elementary school teacher, the chemistry between the two stars is what really makes the series entertaining and unforgettable. My only complaint is that there were not enough kiss scenes in this series. For what Joo Ji Hoon and Kim Hye Soo delivered, there should have been at least a dozen more. The veteran actors had such sultry and fiery chemistry that you were screaming at the screen for more. Seeing both hot-headed prosecutors engaging in a passionate romance with each other and seeing them take down the country’s most notorious villains are enough to entice anyone.

“Healer” is one of those K-dramas that you can watch countless times, and it’s still just as good. The drama stars Ji Chang Wook as Seo Jung Hoo, a man who runs errands anonymously, and Park Min Young as Chae Young Shin, a journalist. There’s a lot that goes on this series, but the romance and love between Jung Hoo and Young Shin pretty much make everything right in the world. How can we forget that legendary kiss where Chae Young Shin is blindfolded? They have such undying love for each other that it only intensified their kiss scenes, making it seem so real.

Both movies delve into the world of BDSM and how it may free the people involved. “Love and leashes” gives more of an introduction into the matter for someone with no prior knowledge but “Nana and Kaoru” as well shows one experienced partner and one newbie who discovers this new world. Both movies are ultimately comedies and have a slither of romance in them even though that is not the main focus.
