Socom Gear Barrett M107 GBB Shell Ejecting
Stories of the shell ejecting, CO2 Barrett M107 Sniper Rifle had been hovering around the Airsoft universe for a very long time so when we, at RedWolf, heard the news of its impending arrival, all we could do was wait at the front door like a child before Christmas Day. That day is now and here it is, the Socom Gear M107 GBB Shell Ejecting Sniper Rifle and yes, it is a thing of beauty. The fact that it is fully licensed exclusively to Socom Gear, the sister company of Madbull, with all the correct markings only make that much more special.
Here is RedWolf TV’s Tim’s take on this monster of a rifle:
Looking at the black case it calls home, one would think that it looks a little smaller than you think it would. This changes once you open it as you notice it comes in quite a few different parts. There’s the lower receiver, heavier than most airsoft GBBRs today. And then there’s the upper receiver and outer barrel combination heavier than most airsoft guns in general. The bolt and carrier, bi-pod and carry handle sit tidily inside untouched and without a scratch.
One would think that since this is not the cheaper airsoft replica on the market, it should have arrived in it’s full form. Much like it’s AEG counterpart, you’ll have to put it together yourself but it isn’t that difficult. Few adjustments have to be made on the upper receiver and outer barrel, then you place the bolt carrier on the lower receiver right in front of the recoil spring tube. To make things easier for yourself, clip on the bi-pod a and stand it up before you do anything else. After that, you slide the upper receiver into place, front first, pull the charging handle back a little bit (make sure it slides into position smoothly as it may take a few attempts) and then the rear of the upper receiver should sit comfortably on the lower. Use the included lugs to keep them in place, attach the carry handle and voila, you should be ready to go! Do not worry, RedWolf Tim is working on a how-to video when it comes to the setting up of the M107 as visuals are always more helpful.
Now that it is standing erect in it’s final form. All you can do is sit back and admire it from afar, but not for too long as you’ll want to try and pick it up as soon as you put it together but mind your back as it weighs just under 12 Kilos. That may not sound like a lot, but 12 kilos spread over 144cm making you believe you’re carrying your new girlfriend around hoping no to drop her on the first date. This is mainly due to its metal body with the steel upper and lower receiver, bi-pod and carry handle which feels gritty and amazing at the same time. Every other metal part is aluminium with a rubber grip and butt-pad. The casing of the magazine is metallic and so are the cartridges which fit 8MM BBs. Coming across a replica shooting 8mm BBs is as rare as winning a prize on the slots machines.
The Barrett M107 comes with one 10 round magazine but it only comes with 5 cartridges. WARNING. Before you charge the cartridge, you must tighten the base of the shell. The cartridges itself is where the CO2 is contained, but how do you charge it? The M107 comes with a CO2 charger. Open it up, insert a CO2 capsule, screw it tightly and charge the cartridges like you would a pistol magazine. Place the BBs in the tip of the cartridge, slide them into the magazine, insert it into the M107, wrack the charging handle and let it fly! It sounds truly amazing.
Now, don’t expect a great deal of power. Even if it is powered by CO2 gas, the heavier and larger BB will be traveling a lot slower than a 6mm BB would. All you will get is 260 fps but don’t let that deceive you! 250fps with a 0.48g BB is around 1.5 joules. Now imagine if that was a 6mm 0.2g BB instead. It would most clock in around 400 fps which is a fair bit!
Sure, the M107 has the looks and the power of a Bentley but everyone has been talking about the ‘recoil’ of this magnificent beast. It is something alright. Lying down with feet pressed up against the wall didn’t stop the M107 from pushing you back even more as your shoulder will most definitely feel it. Of course, it’s not painful at all as it’s airsoft but it is still very impressive. But wait, there’s more! The pressure from the CO2 propellant will push the charging handle back ejecting the spent cartridge with a pitch perfect ‘clang’. The first shot will stun you, but then you’ll want to keep on pulling the trigger till you’re out.
There are a lot of moving parts would need to be oiled for it to work smoothly and consistently. The only thing missing is a large BOOM sound but apart from that, It is a magnificent piece of engineering!
