Stonecutting speed is controlled by the cutting pawn’s General Labor Speed stat, which is determined by a pawn’s stats and capacities rather than any skills. Thus, maximization is based on improving that stat and removing process inefficiencies rather than grinding for experience.

General Labor Speed

General labor speed is affected by manipulation, sight and global work speed.

Sight decreases general labor speed at values below 100%, but offers no benefit above 100%.

Manipulation can be improved with bionic or archotech arms, or with drugs that improve Manipulation or Consciousness (as it directly affects Manipulation) such as Go-juice or Wake-up.

Global work speed is only improved by certain traits, such as Industrious or Neurotic, a Leader’s Work Drive , and the drug Wake-up, which stacks with the drug’s manipulation improvement.

Care should be taken to avoid assigning stonecutting to pawns with damaged vision or manipulation or with traits such as Lazy unless they are otherwise unoccupied.

General Labor Speed is also increased by +50% Production specialists, as well as those under the Production specialist’s Production Command. While being a specialist locks out many other work types and the quality increase is of no use for stonecutting, it can be useful to give to a dedicated stonecutter, to crafter pawns that will benefit and are temporarily seconded to stonecutting, or only temporarily to build up a stockpile of bricks before abandoning the role. A separate pawn as production specialist using the command and staying nearby will also improve rates and can be used independently or stack with the improvement from the cutter being a specialist.

Additionally, like many other production tasks, lack of light or excessive temperatures will negatively affect rates, and up to two tool cabinets will improve rates.

Using shelves placed directly adjacent to the crafting position will remove travel time to pick up new chunks for cutting, as described on that page, so long as:

-Do you build a mobile stone-carving station and move around to where the blocks are so that your hauling can be 3-4x as effective?

Never thought of that, but theoretically it would be the most efficient. Especially in non-mountainous mid-game, when nearby chunks are used up. Deep drill is an option, but it’s so slow I doubt it’s worth it while chunks still exist.For the cost of making a small roofed shack, hauling a stonecutter bench and two toolbenches inside, you could increase the stonecutting efficiency for however long it takes to exhaust the chunks in that area.Lets say there’s a cluster of 30 chunks, and relocating the station to the center of the cluster reduces average hauling time by 10 seconds each (hauling a short distance to the station instead hauling the full distance to the base), that would give a saving of 300 seconds. Which is much less than the time to relocate the benches and build the shack.But in application there are challenges. You need two dedicated toolboxes just for the cutting station, which might get destroyed in a raid. Also, a pawn must be dedicated to just stonecutting. If the pawn commutes to the main base to do other jobs, it’s not worth it. The pawn is also vulnerable to raids or manhunters while far from base. The pawn also has to commute at least once in the morning and once in the evening to sleep, which further eats away at the benefits. The player has to constantly monitor the chunk supply around the station, and move it when hauling distances become too long. The optimal time to move is hard to compute because it depends on the stonecutters crafting skill versus his move speed (does the crafter spend more time hauling the chunk, or cutting it?).So even though moving the cutting station around might be the optimal method, the micro and complications would probably nullify it. It’s still a good idea in early game, though, before you have a lot of animals or enough steel for toolbenches.
