Trader Joe’s Korean Style Beef Short Ribs Review – Freezer Meal Frenzy

Every once in a while, we’ll be wandering the aisles of Trader Joe’s and something will make our eyeballs pop out of our heads like we’re characters in a Tom & Jerry cartoon. We had one of these moments recently when we spotted the Trader Joe’s Korean Style Beef Short Ribs at our local TJ’s store. Are you telling us we can simply buy a bag of frozen ribs and fry them up at home? Well yes, we can. And apparently, folks on Reddit love these!

The recommended cooking method for these is a grill, and we think that’s probably a great idea. However, we cooked ours in the Freezer Meal Frenzy office, where we don’t actually have a grill, so we decided to use the stovetop method instead. No matter how you cook these, you’ll want to thaw them first, but you can read the full cooking instructions at the bottom of this review.

One thing we should point out is that we thawed ours in a bowl of warm water, but we accidentally cracked open the inner bag (yes, these are double-bagged) at some point. We noticed that the marinade was starting to leak into the bowl, so we dumped it before we lost too much sauce. This is something you might want to watch out for if you thaw yours in water.

Now, because of our marinade loss, these tasted perhaps a little subtler than intended. We can’t be sure how much sauce was lost due to our carelessness, but we assume it was enough to make at least a little bit of difference. But we’re not really complaining. Even when it’s subtle, the marinade here is very good. It’s a Korean style sauce with brown sugar, rice wine, soy sauce, and garlic, and it has that classic Korean BBQ flavor to it.

Each strip of meat can be cut down the middle, and on one side you have the actual meat portion, and on the other you have a row of rib bones and a whole lot of fat. You can eat this down to the bone if you’d like, but we preferred the non-bone side to the boned side. Even so, we found this beef to be a bit tougher than we hoped it would be. It tastes great — especially with that marinade, but it’s hard to cut through and it sticks in your teeth. You’ll definitely want to eat this with a fork and a steak knife, and prepare to spend a good amount of time cutting around fat and bone.

We haven’t actually been to a Korean restaurant in a good long while due to the pandemic, but this is certainly no replacement for a good restaurant trip. Still, it cuts that Korean-style ribs craving down to size.

According to the bag, there should be about five pieces of meat inside (ours had exactly five). One piece is a serving size. If you stick with that, you’ll be downing 320 calories (240 from fat) and 230 mg of sodium. The calorie count is a little high, since we think you’ll easily down two or three of these in a sitting, but the sodium level isn’t super bad, as long as you eat just one or two of these. If you eat more than that, the sodium starts adding up. Then again, we’re not sure how much of each piece you’ll actually end up eating, as there tends to be a lot of fat around the edges.

The Trader Joe’s Korean Style Beef Short Ribs are a pretty tasty way to enjoy Korean-style ribs, but they’re certainly not perfect. They’re a bit of a chore to eat, because you’re going to be doing a whole lot of cutting, and there’s a lot of bone and fat that you’ll probably end up tossing out.

Oh, and we should mention that you’ll want to be careful about how you dispose of the bones. This meat has a deliciously sweet scent to it, and if you live in a rural area, you could find yourself attracting wild animals if you simply toss them into a trashcan out back. Be responsible with your discarded fat and bone.

How to have Korean BBQ at Home with Trader Joe’s Products – FOOD is Four Letter Word

This is how I made Korean BBQ at home with products that I gathered from Trader Joe’s – it was pretty amazing to have this wonderful meal at home with very little prep work and my kids always have a lot of fun grilling at the table.

Simple salad made with Baby Spring Mix + Trader Joe’s Carrot Ginger Miso Dressing

Sesame Oil Dip, this is always my favorite dip at Korean BBQ Restaurants. Made by mixing Tablespoon Toasted Sesame Oil mixed with ¼ Teaspoon Salt + ¼ Teaspoon Black Pepper

Ssamjang Dip (spicy Korean BBQ dip), this was the only thing not from Trader Joe’s so it’s totally optional, I used this basic recipe here

Potato Salad, one of my favorite side dishes for K-BBQ, I used this recipe here

Trader Joe’s Scallion Pancakes, I air fried these and they were perfectly crispy.

Thinly sliced jalapeños and garlic, use these in lettuce or jicama wraps.

I seasoned the salmon with salt & pepper, grilled them skin side down for about 90% of the cooking time so it the skin would get crispy, flipped to brown the tops a little before serving

Trader Joe’s Shaved Steak is a great substitute for the thin brisket you usually order at the restaurant. Enjoy by dipping in sesame or soy dipping sauces or use them to make a wrap.

At Korean BBQ Restaurants, they will give you thinly sliced daikon wrappers, Trader Joe’s Jicama Wraps are a great substitute

Trader Joe’s Korean short ribs in air fryer

These Trader Joe’s Korean short ribs made in the air fryer are flavorful and tender with a crispy outside. Ready in under 20 minutes, these juicy short ribs are perfect for dinner because they don’t require hours of cooking and are already marinaded. Just throw them into the air fryer for an easy meal.

Trader Joe’s is known for having tasty and convenient freezer meals at affordable prices. And these Korean short ribs are no different. The tender meat is marinated in a flavorful Korean-style sauce made with soy sauce, brown sugar, rice wine, sesame oil, garlic, and lemon juice. They cook up very quickly in the air fryer and make a great restaurant-quality meal at home.

What cut is Korean short ribs

Korean short ribs are a style of cutting beef ribs called ‘flanken’ or LA galbi. The ribs are cut lengthwise across the rib bones. Each piece of meat contains multiple “short” rib bones. Unlike American or European-style short ribs – which include a thick slice of bone-in beef cut in between the rib bones, the Korean-style results in thin strips of meat on one side of the bone.

Korean short ribs are usually found in the Asian market, but you can also find them in your local grocery stores in the beef section or ask your butcher.

The thin slices of meat are great for marinating and they cook very quickly on a grill or over the stovetop. These short ribs are usually grilled but for this recipe, we are cooking them in the air fryer.

Can you cook Trader Joe’s Korean short ribs in the air fryer

Yes! It’s a favorite go-to kitchen appliance. If cooked improperly, Korean short ribs can be tough and chewy. The hot circulating air of the air fryer breaks down the meat quickly and easily, producing tender and juicy ribs. They are ready in under 20 minutes with little prep or clean-up.

Before cooking your short ribs in the air fryer, make sure to defrost them. This is easy to do in a bowl of cold water for 10 – 15 minutes (do not open the plastic bag if using the water to defrost).

How long do you air fry them

The time you cook your short ribs in the air fryer will depend on your air fryer model and how thick the meat is. Cooked at 400 degrees F, they should be ready in 15 minutes. Korean short ribs cook very quickly, so keep an eye on them so they don’t overcook.

You also don’t want to crowd the air fryer basket, because the meat won’t get as crispy, so cook in batches if you need to.

What temperature should short ribs be cooked to

Your ribs are fully done when they have reached an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit. To get the most accurate temperature, use an instant-read or meat thermometer to check!

How to cook Trader Joe’s beef short ribs in the oven

While the packaging says that these short ribs are best cooked over a grill, sometimes we want a quick and easy no-fuss meal. Broiling them in the oven is convenient for most people, and is an easy alternative to grilling.

Start by defrosting your short ribs in the original bag in cold water for 10 – 15 minutes. Preheat your broiler, then remove the meat from the bag and into a baking dish. Discard the marinade.

Broil until the meat is golden brown and has reached an internal temperature of at least 160 degrees F, about 10 – 15 minutes.

You can flip the meat halfway through to ensure even cooking and browning with a pair of kitchen tongs or a fork.

Leftovers

You can store beef short ribs leftovers in the fridge for up to 5 days. Use an air tight container. Reheat in the air fryer for 2 minutes at 400 degrees.
