Protoform Synthesis Overview: A Zereth Mortis Crafting System for Mounts and Pets
This page will provide information on how to unlock the Protoform Synthesis forges and also explains the reagents and patterns that are needed in order to craft your companions.
Protoform Synthesis is a new Zereth Mortis system which was introduced in Patch 9.2 as an extension to the Cypher of the First Ones . It allows players to craft a multitude of Battle Pets and Mounts from various reagents and patterns that are found throughout the zone.
1. What is the Protoform Synthesis system
Protoform Synthesis is a new system of Patch 9.2 which allows players to craft their own pets and mounts from reagents that are found in Zereth Mortis. It is unlocked by the Cypher of the First Ones Cypher Research Console, more specifically the Dealic β Wildlife Control section.
If you would like to learn more about the rest of the Cypher of the First Ones system and what it can unlock, please see our guide below.
There are a total of 2 Forges that can be unlocked. One of them provides you access to crafting new Pets and the other one grants access to the Mount crafting.
1.1. Unlocking the Protoform Synthesis Forges
Unlocking the Protoform Synthesis Forges requires you to research the Dealic section through the Cypher of the First Ones Cypher Research Console and then completing a short quest line. You will gain access to the Cypher Research Console after you finish Chapter 3 of the Secrets of the First Ones campaign.
You need two specific talents from that tree to gain access to both, with one unlocking the ability to craft Battle Pets and the other for Mounts.
Dealic Understanding β talent in Dealic , grants access to the Pet crafting Forge
β talent in , grants access to the crafting Forge Sopranian Understanding β talent in Dealic, grants access to the Mount crafting Forge
After researching Dealic Understanding your Pocopoc will provide you with a quest called Protoform Synthesis. Finish this and you will have access to the forge which allows for the crafting of Battle Pets.
Once Sopranian Understanding finishes researching Elder Amir will give you a Quest called Finding Tahli. This will lead to a questchain which consists of the following quests:
Finding Tahli;
Selfless Preservation;
Junk’s Not Dead;
Core Competency;
Revival of the Fittest;
Maintenance Mode;
Access Request;
The Final Song;
Judgment Call;
The Lost Component;
A New Architect;
Schematic Reassimilation: Deathrunner.
After completing the questchain mentioned above you will gain access to the forge which allows you to craft Mounts.
1.2. Forge locations
As mentioned before there are two different Protoform Synthesis Forges. One is for crafting Battle Pets and the other one is for crafting Mounts. While the quests that will unlock them will take you directly to their locations you can take a quick look at the images below to figure out where they are.

2. Crafting Components
Now that you have a clear understanding on how to unlock the Protoform Synthesis Forges we can talk about what items you actually need in order to craft your companions and mounts. To put it simply you need 3 types of different components, and sometimes also a Schematic:
Genesis Mote
A Rare Component related to the craft
related to the craft A Lattice
A Schematic
Genesis Motes, Lattices, Schematic for pets, and some of the Rare Components will start dropping after you research Dealic Understanding while the remaining Rare Components and Schematics for mounts start showing up after you finish the Sopranian Understanding research.
If you would like to see the exact costs, appearances, and battle pet moves for all of these pets and mounts, please consult the relevant sections of our collection guides for Patch 9.2 below.
2.1. TomTom – your personal Navigation assistant
TomTom is a navigation addon that helps you find the correct places where you need to go in order to obtain some of the items. We strongly suggest you download this addon as it makes navigating the zones a lot easier.
In the next sections you will notice coordinates in the form of “/way 25.5, 23.3”. When using TomTom all you have to do is copy that command and use it in game β after doing so you will notice a waypoint added to your minimap at these exact coordinates. This will make finding the required items and places significantly easier. You can use this link to obtain more information about TomTom.
2.2. Genesis Motes
Genesis Motes are the most common and the easiest to find component. These drop from all types of enemies found in Zereth Mortis. You should be able to obtain them by just doing your quests and daily activities in Zereth Mortis. While the amount of Genesis Motes needed to craft a specific pet or mount varies, the rough estimate would be around 300 Motes for a Pet and 400 Motes for a Mount.
3. Rare Components and Sources
These items are a lot harder to find than Genesis Motes. They drop from specific enemies or from some designated area of Zereth Mortis. Generally you need to have one of these items per craftable pet or mount. That said, you need to go hunting for the correct one from the correct place.
3.1. Glimmers
Glimmers are items specifically needed for crafting Battle Pets. There are a lot of different types of them and they generally drop from specific types of enemies. For example, the Glimmer of Discovery drops from various Annelid enemies like Engorged Annelid and Annelid Mudborer. For a full list of Glimmers and from where to obtain them take a look at the table below.
The table below is being updated as more sources are found.
3.2. Other Rare Components
Rare Components are similar to Glimmers in how they are found and used. You need one specific Rare Component for crafting a mount. Below you can find a table which explains where you can find them.

3.2.1. Mawforged Bridle
The High Value Cache is located inside Sepulcher of the First Ones, in the area just after the first boss. To unlock the Cache you need an item dropped by Taskmaster Xy’pro.
4. Lattices and Sources
Lattices are another ingredient that is needed to successfully craft your companion. They are needed to craft the “body” of the creature. This means that if you wish to create a snake type of mount or a pet you need a Viperid Lattice which has a chance to be dropped by all types of snakes found around Zereth Mortis.

5. Schematics and Sources
Schematics are needed to craft specific Mounts and Battle Pets. There are a multitude of them and each of them unlocks a single craft. They can be obtained from various sources ranging from killing enemies to picking them up from treasures. For more precise information about where they can be obtained you can take a look at the table below. Some of the schematics are a lot easier to obtain once you unlock flying in Zereth Mortis.
5.1. Battle pet schematics
These Schematics will only start showing up after you finish the Dealic Understanding research.
5.1.1. Obtaining Schematic: Multichicken
You need to find 5 Lost Ovoids and turn them in at /way 53.55 72.22. Lost Ovoids are a random spawn throughout Zereth Mortis. Below, you can find some coordinates where they can potentially appear:

After collecting 5 of them, make your way to /way 52.35 73.46 where the cave entrance is where you can find and find the Frazzled Poultrid Hen and hand in the Lost Ovoids.
5.1.2. Obtaining Schematic: Prototickles
Schematic: Prototickles is a well-hidden one and is best explained by the steps and pictures below.
Go to /way 53.55 75.52 and jump down onto the rock below;
Once on the first rock jump the gap to reach the second rock from /way 52.99 75.78
Make your way to the tree top at the edge of the rock;
Pan your camera so that you can see inside the tree past the leaves;
The Schematic is on one of the chain links that are seen inside the leaves.
5.1.3. Obtaining Schematic: Resonant Echo
Crystallized Echo of the First Song can spawn in a number of areas around Zereth Mortis. Some possible locations are as follows:
/way 77.40 45.40
/way 77.5 60.45
/way 77.6 59.0

5.1.4. Obtaining Schematic: Shelly
Below are step-by-step directions to reach Schematic: Shelly:
Cave entrance /way 59.13 81.59;
Make your way behind the shelf to /way 57.73 77.71;
Use Door of Shadows Dimensional Translators
5.1.5. Obtaining Schematic: Terror Jelly
This Schematic is hard to reach without flying. You need either a Goblin Glider Kit or a movement ability like Door of Shadows, Heroic Leap, or anything similar.
If you have a movement ability like Door of Shadows Go to /way 67.55 32.69 and stand on the pots; Use your leap ability to get to the pillar at /way 67.21 32.60 where you will find the schematic.
If you do not have a movement ability: Go to /way 68.86 31.05 and make your way up to the top; Once at the top use your Goblin Glider Kit
5.1.6. Obtaining Schematic: Tunneling Vombata
Below are step-by-step directions to reach Schematic: Tunneling Vombata:
Enter the cave at /way 55.70 53.47;
Turn right and make your way into the first room following the path down;
Keep following the path until some rocks block you from going further;
The Schematic is next to those rocks at /way 74.79 50.85
5.1.7. Obtaining Schematic: Viperid Menace
The Schematic is inside the Library Vault; this is not interactable when you first enter the cave. You need to pick the correct table to make it interactable after which you can open it.
Cave entrance /way 59.13 81.59;
Pick up the tablet at /way 57.92 78.85;
Go to the Library Vault at /way 58.82 77.20 and open it.
5.2. Mount schematics
These Schematics will only start showing up after you finish the Sopranian Understanding research and complete the quest line Finding Tahli.
5.2.1. Obtaining Schematic: Adorned Vombata
This Schematic requires either flying in Zereth Mortis, Door of Shadows,or any other similar leap/teleport ability.
This Schematic is found inside the Grateful Boon treasure located at /way 37.2 78.3.
Start from /way 40.00 74.95 and make your way to the top of the doorway;
Once you reach the top of the doorway use Door of Shadows
Go to /way 39.60 76.50 and look up, you need to jump on that ledge, you might need to play around with your cursor to find the place where you can leap to;
Move to /way 39.63 77.16 and look up, there is a ledge where you can teleport/leap to;
When on the ledge, move left and onto the rock formation there;
For the last leap you need to jump from /way 39.94 77.82 to the upper most ledge;
Now that you have made it past the parkour part we can start working on accessing the Grateful Boon.
Make your way to /way 38.34 77.98 and drop down into the valley;
You will see Agitated Vombata , Agitated Lupine , and Agitated Cervids around;
, , and around; You need to click on all of them to pet them;
of them to them; Take notice that there is an Agitated Vombata on top of the sphere in the middle and an Agitated Cervid on the ledge to the left;
on top of the sphere in the middle and an on the ledge to the left; After you have interacted with all of them Tah Fen will speak and summon the Grateful Boon next to him at /way 37.2 78.3.
5.2.2. Obtaining Schematic: Buzz
Schematic: Buzz has a chance to be looted from Pulp-Covered Relics, which are found near Vespoid nests. Some nest locations are listed below:
/way 42 34.2
/way 50.4 41.2
/way 53 45.8
/way 53.4 25.8
/way 64.5 63.5
5.2.3. Obtaining Schematic: Darkened Vombata
This Schematic requires either flying in Zereth Mortis, Door of Shadows, or any other similar leap/teleport ability.
Schematic: Darkened Vombata is found inside a cage at /way 64.2 35.6 hat is too high up to reach normally.
5.2.4. Obtaining Schematic: Desertwing Hunter
This Schematic requires either flying in Zereth Mortis, Door of Shadows, or any other similar leap/teleport ability.
Schematic: Desertwing Hunter is found on top of a tall pillar that you need to climb.
Go to /way 62.29 43.62;
Start making your way up as shown on the images below;
The Schematic will be on the platform where you land after the third jump.
5.2.5. Obtaining Schematic: Prototype Leaper
This Schematic requires either flying in Zereth Mortis, Door of Shadows, or any other similar leap/teleport ability.
This is going to be one of the longest climbs unless you have flying unlocked in Zereth Mortis. Be sure to have a Goblin Glider Kit at hand before starting.
Go to /way 63.21 68.54 and start following the images below;
The Schematic will be placed on top of the rock you land on after the last jump.
5.2.6. Obtaining Schematic: Vespoid Flutterer
This Schematic requires either flying in Zereth Mortis, Door of Shadows, or any other similar leap/teleport ability.
Go to /way 50.33 29.70 and jump to the pillar in front of you;

6. NPC locations
Below you can find the various NPCs who have been mentioned on this page and where to find them.
6.1. Elder Amir
Elder Amir can be found at Pilgrim’s Grace in the east end of Zereth Mortis. There is an Ancient Translocator nearby that can take you directly to this area.
6.2. Vilo
Vilo acts as the quartermaster for The Enlightened reputation faction in Zereth Mortis and can be found in Haven. This is one of the first areas you will visit while exploring the zone in Patch 9.2.

I was trying to avoid posting in here again as I feel like Iβm posting too much, but wanted to respond. (Plus, as a mainly outdoor content player, Zereth Mortis is kinda my endgame lol)
Bremmenn: Bremmenn: Change the cypher gear item that drops to a token that can be turned in to a vendor for a specific slot item, this would also include weapons and off hands.
Increase the drop chance. If the plan is for it to take months for one char to fully gear up people will not do it. People donβt mind spending a couple/few weeks gearing up an alt (letβs be honest thatβs what we are all doing here, not gearing mains).
The token would be nice for the ones with buffs. I looted 5 or 6 252 Boots, but none of them had the affix I wanted. Thankfully, once flying came out, I didnβt want that affix anymore, but still was annoying. Likewise, I still havenβt looted a second shoulder with a gem slot. (The worst part is the campaign quest this week was supposed to reward one, but the game justβ¦ didnβt give me a reward.)
Are you doing every daily and world quest each day? Cause there hasnβt been a day without at least 2 pieces a day from them.
They can also drop rarely from treasures, but I think Iβve only had like 3 pieces from it?

I have -almost- everything to craft every mount/pet and thatβs from just regular play, I havenβt farmed any of them except the Protoform Sentience Crowns, but that took like 30 minutes when the daily quest was up. What I feel could use improvements from my experience:
Viperid, Vespoid, Aurelid and Helicid Lattices.
Viperid have very limited enemies that can drop them, only the small snakes that have like a dozen spawnpoints total over the entire zone, and theyβre neutral, so people donβt really kill them. Just add them to the big snakes as well, and maybe buff the drop rate a little. That, or you could revert Furidian back to being a snake like he was on the PTR, and re-add the Lattice to his drop table. A worm in a box is weird, but a snake in a box is something thatβs a common trope. Lol.
Vespoid, as anyone knows, is the 2nd most needed Lattice, and has a terrible, and I mean TERRIBLE, drop rate. Please, just buff it.
Aurelid only has 1 reliable source, Hirukon, which groups are becoming rarer and rarer to find. The other source is locked behind a single world quest and only has like 5 spawn points with a 15 minute respawn. Please fix the inability to get a new Lure from vashj each week. The gms we ticket say is a bug but itβs been weeks.
Helicidβ¦ needs the most Lattices of anything on ZM and yet has the 2nd least sources (behind Aurelid). Thereβs 7-8 snails in zereth mortis and all have the equally small chance of dropping the Lattice. Either add more Helicid mobs, or buff the drop rate please
Glimmers of Cunning and Satisfaction.
Glimmer of Cunning can ONLY drop from the Tarachnid Egg treasure. Problem is that treasure has a very lengthy respawn time. I have done the Tarachnid Eggs at least 5 times a day for over a week and still only have one Glimmer. One of my friends, who has crafted every pet but I think 3, still hasnβt looted a single one.
Glimmer of Satisfaction can only drop from eating from a Feast of Gluttonous Hedonism or Stone Soup in Zereth Mortis or Sepulcher, with a 15 minute cooldown between attempts. Problem with this? If you donβt raid, you arenβt going to be doing that. I drop stone soups in Zereth Mortis every hour or so on maizou, and eat from it on as many alts as I can (for some reason, they spawn in different shards a lot of the time). And still havenβt gotten one. Iβve gone through I think 2 stacks of soup so far. Thereβs reports on wowhead that these can drop from the bag Xyβmox drops, but Iβm thinking thatβs a bug in wowheadβs system cause I literally sat in ZM doing nothing but open that bag for 2 hours and nada.
Iβm not exaggerating when Iβve already considered not playing until 9.2.5/10.0 over the Satisfaction Glimmers. Iβve never been more aggravated with a game mechanic. And yes, I know βYou have a year to do it!β thatβs not the point. I donβt raid, so I donβt eat in raids. And people donβt drop feasts for rares in ZM. Iβm spending 400-500g PER ATTEMPT at this, and Iβve already gone through 40 of said attempts, at least. Thatβs ~20,000g I spent on something with nothing to show for it. This is made more frustrating by the fact we donβt know if the 15 minute cooldown stops when we log out, so some of these attempts may not even be eligible, as they made the cooldown completely hidden with no way to track it.
3. Bauble of Pure Innovation
This just need a respawn timer adjustment. Itβs far too long. I got mine, but it took a LOT of realm hopping because Proudmoore is just way too populated to ever catch it on Proudmoore.

Please add a secondary source for these. Having them locked behind dropping from a raid boss is a ridiculous restriction, for a system designed for open world players. The same goes for the schematic the same boss drops.Why not make them a low drop rate from the 3 Dune Dominance Rares? As devs, how do you think raiders would respond if you made it so a raid boss was locked behind having caught every battle pet in the zone? The same can be said for the Mawforged Bridles. Those require being in a Normal+ raid, because for some reason, you guys opted to not let the chest spawn in LFR.

My frustration with this is immeasurable beyond words. Iβve slaughtered those avians to the point Iβm surprised they donβt override their code and run away from me. I still havenβt had one drop. I know quite a few in the same predicament. It doesnβt help thereβs so few Avians that drop them and they are immensely spread out.

I didnβt have an issue with this, but I know a lot of people do. The fact they just drop from pretty much every elite mob in the zone is weird and makes targeting them to farm difficult. Mine dropped while I was in the group that was confirming where the Mawdapted Raptor schematic dropped, so I was lucky.

PERSONALLY speaking, I think motes are fine. But I also know they are the biggest turn off for a good majority of players, as we need something like 18,000 total. And as elites donβt drop them, that makes them rather hard to acquire for people who arenβt killing non elites for other reasons. Honestly, just adding them to the drop table for elites would go a long way.
Bremmenn: Bremmenn: Make the specials chests such as the one by the log and the sunken chest respawn, currently a lot of them are one time only and seem to never show up after they are looted the first time.
β¦thatβs the point though? Theyβre part of the Treasures of Zereth Mortis achievement. Lol.
Anyway, one last note, from personal experience:
Wowhead Rondure Cache Rondure Cache is a World of Warcraft object that can be found in Zereth Mortis. In the Shared Containers category. Added in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands.
I want to personally say, this is by far, BY FAR, (I genuinely cannot stress how big the gap between this and the 2nd place is) the worst thing in Zereth Mortis.
Not only is it a jumping puzzle, you made it so none of the things you gave us to help with jumping puzzles work. The Dimensional Gear, Door of Shadows, heck, even Warlock Gateway, Heroic Leap, etc.
And If you are like me and use trailblazer talent to move faster, or you use the ZM gear that gives you 20% speed? We will jump right over the orbs. I had to mail myself a talent change item to get rid of it. (Because I didnt want to farm the 60 energy to get back).
To top it all off, thereβs random orbs flying around the room, where if they hit you, you will go FLYING and land on the ground. On top of this, when you get high enough, the orbs seemingly start to seek you out, limiting how long you have to line up your jumps.
And the icing on the cake? When I finally got to the top and looted the cache? I expected something fun like a toy or a unique piece of gear. (Like how the sands gave a unique trinket that is actually pretty good)
No. It had 25 anima, cypher wrists, and a costume for Pocopoc I already looted from another treasure.
That was it.
Why is this thing even in the game other than to cause frustration?
