I genuinely have no idea what you are trying to ask here. Do you mean mating like reproduction? Then I don’t know what you mean about marking and mates. More likely, do you mean the fanfic trope of mating? That’s a fanfic trope. We don’t have that here. Its not in canon, it doesn’t work with the principles of canon, it doesn’t match to actual wolf behaviour, and it doesn’t just plain doesn’t work at all.

Harry Potter – reminder, again, that this is a HP fanblog – is all about choice. Part of the reason Werewolves are Dark creatures is because their transformation is against their choice, and removes their ability to chose, as well as the potential for infection which in turn takes away the choices of other people.

The transformed wolf is just that – it’s a wolf, largely like any normal wolf but for their taste for human flesh. If it mates [1] with another transformed werewolf and offspring result they will be born as intelligent wolf pups. They can’t feasibly mate with a human [2] and if they had children with a human as a human then the offspring would be human (see: Teddy Lupin).

The thing is, a HP werewolf is still a person, still able to choose who they might spend time around when human, who to build relationships with and who to love. Just because they turn into an animal once a month – once. a. month. the rabid wolf does not have hold of them at any other time – does not mean that they are animalistic when human. They can choose to be (see: Fenrir) but they don’t have to be (see: Remus), and even if they choose to be it doesn’t by any means mean that they will have some fated mate or be able to forge a bond with someone because of super special werewolf magic.

My dudes, there is no such thing as super special werewolf magic. The “wolf” is not present away from the full moon. An untransformed werewolf does not have super senses. They are just people as is reiterated repeatedly throughout the series.

Furthermore, even natural wolves don’t have some automatic mate. They find potential ones and have whole mating behaviours to encourage bonds to build and allowing options for attack and rejection. There is no one true mate or soulmate bullshit. I know many people like the idea that there is one person out there for everyone but 1. No, 2. Poly people exist who may love several people at once, and 3. please don’t make people feel that they have one (1) hope for happiness and that a failure of a relationship means a failure at romance forever and thereby make them feel like they have to stay in a bad relationship when they don’t, that’s just shitty.

This whole concept of mating and marking sounds like something out of trashy smut-fuelled fanfic and look, sometimes we need some nice iddish smut-fuelled trashfic, but it isn’t canon.

This blog does it’s best to stick to the rules and principles of canon. As I have shown: 1. This doesn’t match to canon in any part. 2. It violates the rules and principles of canon. 3. It makes no sense based on actual wolves, actual people and what we know of canon werewolves and 4. what?

So, lets answer your questions here:

It doesn’t. They don’t mate. If an untransformed werewolf wishes to be with someone romantically they may have a relationship and maybe one day get married. If they wish to have sex then they will proposition someone and perhaps have sex.

And up until the human is marked how does the werewolf mate react and also if you are a werewolf and your mate is a werewolf do you still mark each other?

There is no marking. Not if both parties are werewolves, not if only one party is a werewolf, there is no marking. If they want a sign of commitment they can discuss their relationship, and agree to make it committed. They could propose, and get married. There is no marking. There is no mating. This whole concept is bullshit fanfic tropes that makes no sense and I’m sorry but I can’t take this question seriously because it breaks down on every fundamental level!

THERE IS NO MATING.

THERE IS NO MARKING.

The closest you would get to each would be as follows:

Mating: 1. Reproductive mating, when transformed to produce intelligent wolves, or as humans having sex resulting in a human kid. 2. Mating as in mated wolves as in a relationship wherein well… they’re people. With people brains. And people thoughts. And human self-restraint. They’d discuss their relationship (I hope) and set the terms of their relationship that way. 3. Mates as in friends as in common British parlance “you’re his mate, aren’t you?” or “hey mate, maybe cool off a bit,” see also the Marauders, see also much of Ron’s conversations with Harry.

Marking: 1. Marking a wolf you make, which seems like something Fenrir Greyback would do, by making sure the transforming bite is in an obvious, easily visible body part so they can’t hide that they’re now a werewolf. 2. Two partners at least one of which is a werewolf marking their relationship possibly with a idk, a tattoo or a promise ring, or engagement ring, or wedding band or a goddamn friendship bracelet I don’t know. 3. Marking as in to mark a partner as yours because you’re a possessive person and/or engaged in a BDSM relationship. 4. Marking because you’re an abusive possessive piece of shit and so you scar up your partner so they can’t escape you because everyone will see the words “property of” carved into their face.

Yeah I know I’m getting a bit hyperbolic but I really don’t know why you’re asking this question of this blog.

This is a HP fandom blog. I try to keep in line with the rules of canon and the principles of canon. This mating and marking idea is neither. It’s fanon at best and a shitty and poorly used fanfic trope at worst. It doesn’t work with what we know of canon [3] it doesn’t work with the principles of canon [4] and it MAKES NO SENSE.

Okay look. If you really want to have werewolves with a mating (and marking) component then here’s how you could do it:

You extend the principles of the Dark magic of the lycanthropic disease to cover this as well. As well as stealing the choice from those it infects (transforming them against their will, taking away their minds when transformed) and taking away the choices of those bitten (because it will do the above) it also forces them when transformed to find a partner and bind their partner to them, further stealing their choices.

This partner may be human, in which case the werewolf may try to bite them and turn them or may straight up attack them and then be obsessed with them if they get away. Maybe this obsession lingers when they become human again, leading to them stalking the person, trying to convince them to accept them, to bind them to them via manipulation and the bonds of a possessive relationship. If the other mate is a werewolf (or is bitten and becomes a werewolf), then presumably the marking shows when untransformed and binds their will to the person who marked them. Or, if it was a mutual thing done under Wolfsbane, it binds their wills to one another, making them a cohesive (and codependent) unit.

If you want to make it a healthier thing then you can keep the “finding a mate” as a Dark compulsion to find someone, but instead of taking away the mate’s choice its taking away the werewolf’s choice (see also: the wolves of the Twilight Saga) and compelling them to take away their prospective mate’s choices in turn. They obsess over this person, they want some way to mark this person as theirs, they can’t stand other people trying to instigate relationships with their chosen mate nor their mate seeking relationships with others.

A werewolf trying not to be an awful human being would take the time to woo their partner, would try to get control of their possessive tendencies, would explain whats going on and try to convince them to agree to a formal marking. A werewolf like Fenrir would just go for it, and likely turn them in the process.

But in either case: it’s still not canon, it’s still a pain in the arse to work with canon and I don’t know what you meaaannnnnn.

[2] – Before Wolfsbane they’d probably eat the human, after Wolfsbane the only people into it would probably be people into bestiality or teratophilia and not that those people don’t exist but the wixen world is SMALL and numbers of werewolves are SMALL and numbers of people willing to risk the bite is SMALLER STILL so I find this highly unlikely.
[3] – We literally see a werewolf in a relationship in canon! We know that there’s no “mating” or “marking” involved, its a matter of romantic emotions, general compatibility, degree of care, degree of willingness to work through problems and you know, goddamn human relationship shit not any kind of supernatural marking or soulmate-mating bullshit!
[4] – Choice! Free will! Werewolves are wild rabid animals when transformed and try to eat humans, they wouldn’t want to fuck one unless their mental wires there are very crossed! Wolfsbaned werewolves are people in a wolf body, they probably don’t want to fuck a human unless they’re a teratophile of some description! These people are still free to choose who they engage in a relationship with, there is no mating system, nothing to bind people together whether one party chooses it or not, there is mutually agreed upon relationships or there is nothing.
[5] – Not because I don’t think you should fuck a werewolf. If you are interested in werewolves sexually I don’t blame you, but unless you’re more into bestiality than teratophilia you probably are more into the film version of werewolves as opposed to canon werewolves. Difference: Book werewolves are wolves, while film werewolves are closer to wolfmen. Further, its not because I don’t think you should be into vore or BDSM or whatever else. Its your choice and provided you don’t hurt people and everyone involved is a consenting, fully informed adult I really don’t care what you get up to. The reasons are because bonds of this sort are often deeply unhealthy and having been in a really bad relationship I’d not wish it on someone else. The relationships in every fic I’ve seen tropes like this in have been deeply abusive, manipulative and unhealthy as fuck, and I don’t want those ideas to be unquestioningly romanticised and giving teens an awful idea of what to base a relationship on and I’ve yet to see a fic which actually shows just how unhealthy a lot of those relationships are. Maybe there are some out there – I’d be interested to read some – but I’ve never yet seen one.
[6] Oh and yeah, blanket statement rn, FUCK whatever JKR claims are the new messages she’s adding to canon, the original books were about freedom of choice, the importance of love, equality even despite bigotry, accepting death, seeking justice, fighting for the betterment of all, and the principles of self-sacrifice. This mating and marking business fails.

So here’s something I never really planned to do a werewolf fact on, but – hey, I get asked things like this all the time, so let’s go ahead and talk about it!

How about werewolves and mates? Or mating in general? How about all that stuff? Was that even a thing in folklore?

No.

The answer is very easy and straightforward, so there you have it. No. Werewolves needing a particular kind of “mate” or having some kind of mating seasons or rituals was never, ever a thing in folklore whatsoever.

Werewolves in folklore are perfectly ordinary individuals with an unusual curse. This doesn’t stop them from being an entirely ordinary spouse otherwise. We see werewolf men with good wives and plenty with bad wives (like Bisclavret, among others), we see werewolf women with husbands and we see werewolf women seeking husbands (ordinary, human husbands) or werewolf women who are grandmas and have entire ordinary, un-cursed families.

Long story short, werewolves in folklore “mate with” un-cursed humans, get married to them, and often try to live normal lives in spite of their curse, because werewolves are human. That is, of course, if the werewolf in question wants a significant other; they don’t always want one (because there is no weird instinctual drive to have one, as they are people who make that decision for themselves).

Something that a lot of very modern media seems to lose track of is that werewolves are still human, themselves. They are humans with a curse, not just animals or some new alien species with totally different biology and instincts. And their personality doesn’t change. What a werewolf might do would depend entirely on the individual’s personality, not some predetermined “werewolf instinct” or something to do with packs or whatever. They aren’t animals – they’re people.

They are people with spouses/significant others (if they choose to have one; they do not have to have one like some modern pop culture implies), not animals with mates and some kind of mating drive.

And while we’re on the biology thing, since I get so many asks about this: no, folklore never talked about werewolf genitalia, because that really wasn’t on anybody’s mind. And no, I cannot imagine a single reason why werewolf bits down there would be altered except someone is into that and wants to write something kinky about it. You do you, I guess. Personally, I think that has no place in a werewolf story (especially if you want them taken seriously), but I’m not into werewolves in that way.

And as for the popular Alpha/Beta/Omega trope – I mean that both in relation to werewolf pack stories and in relation to A/B/O as a genre – that is also a pop culture thing, which got its start from misconceptions about wolf packs.

Now, obviously, all of this is in relation to folklore. Not that pop culture had anything like this for a very, very long time, either – it’s a pretty recent development.

So… you do whatever you want with it! And I’m sure various settings you enjoy have done whatever they want with it, too. I’ve seen so many takes on it that it makes my head spin. But if you want to ask from a folkloric perspective, there’s your answer. I also personally like the folklore answer best, because I like werewolves as people and as characters, not as animals or some kind of animal-people species that exists in a setting just to explore somebody’s weird subversive lore take on it… and then, more often than not, to be promptly killed off unceremoniously, which – unfortunately – is what werewolves mostly are today. Anyway–
