There is a rainy season from the middle of June through the middle of October, with the highest concentration of rain between July and September. The dry season is during the winter months with minimal cloud cover during February, March, and April. Hurricanes are rare but can occasionally hit Puerto Vallarta.Most people come to Puerto Vallarta for the scenery. The beaches are beautiful, as is the surrounding area. Banderas Bay is one of the largest and deepest bays in the world, and there are view points from many of the surrounding hills. There are beaches in many different areas, each with its own atmosphere and some more remote than others.There are many specific neighborhoods in Puerto Vallarto. One of the most notable is Centro, which is the oldest part of the city. This area’s center is found north of the Cuale River. Emiliano Zapata is south of the Cual and is usually referred to as “Old Town” in most of the tourist information. The city’s largest fish market is in Lazaro Cardenas.The city has recently renovated the boardwalk, which runs from just south of the old town to the middle of the downtown area. The area also has papaya and mango plantations and small villages. To the south of town there is lush, green vegetation and hills that fall into the bay. This area also has many small fishing villages, some of which are only accessible with a boat. To the east of town are the Sierra Madre Mountains and to the west is the Bay of Banderas.Most people head to Puerto Vallarta to relax on the beach, and for this purpose it will not disappoint. For those hoping for a more adventurous vacation, there are plenty of activities and things to do in Puerto Vallarta as well. There are some great beaches for surfing, and scuba diving and snorkeling is a favorite activity for many. You can also head out of town and enjoy a zip line ride as well as a canopy tour through the jungle. Whale watching is also a favorite activity between December in March when you are most likely to spot whales. There are also many places around town to play golf, try your hand at parasailing and enjoy some horseback riding.There is an abundance of food options available around town. For casual meals and for the budget conscious, there are plenty of taco stands. There are also some wonderful rooftop and waterfront restaurants that offer excellent views of the water, but also come at a higher price. We love La Palapa which isn’t too expensive but has nice food and nice views. You’ll find plenty of beach side restaurants, some are a better quality than others, but in general the seafood is quite delicious and not to be missed.Taxis are a common way to travel around Puerto Vallarta. Prices are set and you can find a list of current rates at your hotel. You’ll find a concentration of taxis around the intersection by the liquor outlet in the Centro District. Hotels and travel agencies also offer pickups from the airport, but prices can be high. There are two types of taxis at the airport. The white federal taxis are available as you exit the airport, but these are expensive. If you cross the pedestrian bridge over the highway you can pick up a cheaper yellow taxi.Buses are an easy way to get around town. Another issue is simple compatibility…many of the most worthwhile experiences in Puerto Vallarta are cash driven enterprises, and even those that do rarely accept the cards of smaller issuers like Discover and American Express. This means that lack of preparedness with the correct currency could mean you miss out on a unique opportunity. With this in mind, here are a number of ways you can access pesos for your Mexican vacation using your home country’s currency.
Through Your Bank
Perhaps the best and most convenient way to obtain pesos before your trip is to order them in advance through your bank. Of course, this must be done in advance of your departure from your home country, but is an easy way to ensure you have the currency you need to get the most out of your trip.
Travelers Checks
Some tourists prefer to carry travelers checks as a backup supply of funds, but visitors to Mexico may want to consider another method. Not only are fewer banks issuing and accepting them in recent years, they are also notoriously difficult to change into usable cash in the country as well as in many places around the world.
At the Airport
Airport currency exchange centers are the most immediate and visible resource for travelers in need of a particular form of cash, placed ubiquitously throughout world class airports. They provide the most possible flexibility, allowing you to retain your home currency until your landing on foreign soil while enabling you to leave the airport already equipped with the cash you need.
However, this flexibility comes at a significant cost: exchange rates at airport currency exchange centers are often much less favorable than with currency exchanges performed through other means. Tourists can lose 20 percent or more of their funds in each exchange, making airport currency exchanges into more of an emergency resource for the savvy traveler.
Local Currency Exchange
Fortunately, currency exchanges in town offer much more preferable exchange rates for visitors. Although the relative value of North American dollars against the peso can fluctuate with some regularity, the rate at Puerto Vallarta’s officially sanctioned exchange houses typically follows closely with the official federal exchange rate, making it a good option for currency exchanges once you’ve arrived.
From the ATM
ATM machines, colloquially known as “cajeros” are another reliable resource for accessing pesos in Puerto Vallarta. Although there are relatively few American based banks in this Mexican beach town, withdrawal fees are relatively low and in line with transaction tariffs at American and Canadian ATMs. International transaction fees may also apply to ATM withdrawals, and you should check with your card issuer to learn more about the terms associated with transactions abroad.
Travelers should also ensure their card is approved by the issuer for international use, as issuers overzealous in their efforts at identity protection have been known to freeze he cards of unsuspecting tourists as a result of unexpected transactions outside of their usual location.
MoneyGram and Western Union
These wire transfer services are less than ideal choices as a main resource for accessing your funds as pesos abroad, but can represent a critical lifeline in an emergency situation. These two services allow the instant transfer of cash overseas, and serve as a saving grace for travelers who have encountered unfortunate scenarios such as a lost wallet or lost luggage.
There are relatively high standard fees associated with use of these services, often exceeding $10 per transaction, but for travelers with no other access to funds, it’s an outstanding option. To receive funds sent from abroad, visitors must use their passport to identify themselves at one of the dozens of Western Union or MoneyGram locations in the Puerto Vallarta area.
General Tips
Money in Puerto Vallarta of Mexico
Prices in this book are quoted most often in U.S. dollars. Some services in Mexico quote prices in dollars, others in pesos. Because of the current fluctuation in the dollar/peso market, prices may be different from those listed here, but we’ve done our best to give accurate rates.
A stay in one of Puerto Vallarta’s top hotels can cost more than $350, but if you aren’t wedded to standard creature comforts, you can spend as little as $40 a day on room, board, and local transportation. Lodgings are less expensive in the charming but unsophisticated mountain towns like San Sebastián del Oeste.
You can get away with a tab of $50 for two at a wonderful restaurant (although it’s also easy to pay more). The good news is that there are hotels and eateries for every budget, and inexpensive doesn’t necessarily mean bargain basement. This guide recommends some excellent places to stay, eat, and play for extremely reasonable prices.
Prices throughout this guide are given for adults. Substantially reduced fees are almost always available for children, students, and senior citizens.
ATMs and Banks
ATMs (cajeros automáticos) are widely available, with Star, Cirrus, and Plus the most frequently found networks. Your own bank will probably charge a fee for using ATMs abroad; the foreign bank you use may also charge a fee. You’ll usually get a better rate of exchange at an ATM, however, than you will at a currency-exchange office or at a teller window. And extracting funds as you need them is a safer option than carrying around a large amount of cash.
Many Mexican ATMs cannot accept PINs with more than four digits. If yours is longer, change your PIN to four digits before you leave home. If your PIN is fine yet your transaction still can’t be completed, chances are that the computer lines are busy or that the machine has run out of money or is being serviced. Don’t give up.
For cash advances, plan to use Visa or MasterCard, as many Mexican ATMs don’t accept American Express. Cash advances are allowed at most local ATMs, however it’s the most expensive way to get your money. It may be better to leave cash advances just for emergencies. Large banks with reliable ATMs include Banamex, HSBC, BBVA Bancomer, Santander, Banorte, and Scotiabank Inverlat. Some banks no longer exchange traveler’s checks; if you carry these, make sure they are in smaller denominations ($20s or $50s) to make it more likely that hotels or shops will accept them if need be. Travelers must have their passport or other official identification in order to change traveler’s checks.

Credit Cards
Credit cards are accepted in Puerto Vallarta and at major hotels and restaurants in outlying areas. Smaller, less expensive restaurants and shops tend to take only cash. In general, credit cards aren’t accepted in small towns and villages, except in some hotels. The most widely accepted cards are MasterCard and Visa.
When shopping, you can often get better prices if you pay with cash, particularly in small shops. But you’ll receive wholesale exchange rates when you make purchases with credit cards. These exchange rates are usually better than those that banks give you for changing money. U.S. banks charge their customers a foreign transaction fee for using their credit card abroad. The decision to pay cash or to use a credit card might depend on whether the establishment in which you are making a purchase finds bargaining for prices acceptable, and whether you want the safety net of your card’s purchase protection. To avoid fraud or errors, it’s wise to make sure that “pesos” is clearly marked on all credit-card receipts.
Before you leave for Mexico, contact your credit-card company to alert them to your travel plans and to get lost-card phone numbers that work in Mexico; the standard toll-free numbers often don’t work abroad. Carry these numbers separately from your wallet so you’ll have them if you need to call to report lost or stolen cards. American Express, MasterCard, and Visa note the international number for card-replacement calls on the back of their cards.
Currency and Exchange
Mexican currency comes in denominations of 20-, 50-, 100-, 200-, and 500-peso bills. Coins come in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 pesos and 20 and 50 centavos. (Twenty-centavo coins are only rarely seen.) Many of the coins are very similar, so check carefully; bills, however, are different colors and easily distinguished.
U.S. dollar bills (but not coins) are widely accepted in tourist-oriented shops and restaurants in Puerto Vallarta. Pay in pesos where possible, however, for better prices. Although in larger hotels U.S. dollars are welcome as tips, it’s generally better to tip in pesos so that service personnel don’t have to go to the bank to exchange currency.
At this writing, the exchange rate was 13.43 pesos to the U.S. dollar. ATM transaction fees may be higher abroad than at home, but ATM exchange rates are the best because they’re based on wholesale rates offered only by major banks. Most ATMs allow a maximum withdrawal of $300 to $400 per transaction. Banks and casas de cambio (money-exchange bureaus) have the second-best exchange rates. The difference from one place to another is usually only a few pesos.
Some banks change money on weekdays only until 1 or 3 pm (though they stay open until 4 or 5, or later). Casas de cambio generally stay open until 6 or later and often operate on weekends; they usually have competitive rates and much shorter lines. By law, no more than $300 can be exchanged per person per day, so plan in advance. Some hotels exchange money, but they give a poor exchange rate.
You can do well at most airport exchange booths, though not as well as at the ATMs. You’ll do even worse at bus stations, in hotels, in restaurants, or in stores.
When changing money, count your bills before leaving the window of the bank or casa de cambio, and don’t accept any partially torn or taped-together notes: You won’t be able to use them anywhere. Also, many shop and restaurant owners are unable to make change for large bills. Enough of these encounters may compel you to request billetes chicos (small bills) when you exchange money. It’s wise to have a cache of smaller bills and coins to use at these more humble establishments to avoid having to wait around while the merchant runs off to seek change.
