Best Holster For When You Have To Tuck In Your Shirt
Not all of us like to have long, droopy clothing that hangs loose. Some people like to dress up, wear a nice button-up shirt, and maybe some good slacks. For those of you that do, you may have been traditionally stuck either carrying outside the waistband or wrapping your dress shirt over and around an inside the waistband concealed carry holster that clips directly onto your gun belt.
Good news – there’s easy solutions to this. You can stay concealed AND tuck in your dress shirt without any worry. The big element you have to pay attention to is the belt clip. Inside the waistband holsters that clip directly from holster to belt don’t allow you to tuck your shirt between the two. If you see a belt clip that hooks up like an upside down letter “J”, you have the ability to tuck down into the space between the clip and the holster. But that’s where carrying with a tucked-in shirt begins.
Cloak Tuck Belt Clips: Why Two Is Better Than One
When you’re tucking in your shirt into your trousers, wrapping into a single cloak tuck belt clip is convenient – but at what cost? A single point of contact between belt and holster is also a single point of failure. It may also bunch up throughout the course of repeatedly sitting and standing.
Having two belt clips that allow you to tuck in your dress shirt is far better. This enables you to smooth out the profile of your handgun in its inside the waistband holster. Add a suit coat over the top and you are good to go throughout the day.
What’s The Best Position For A Tucked In IWB?
This is a question we get asked pretty often. The Cloak Tuck iwb holster series was made to be tucked beneath a polo or dress shirt. As such, different users may find different degrees of concealment depending upon where they position the holster.
In general, we usually recommend starting off at a standard 3 o’clock position on the waistline. This is a good general place to start. Tuck in your shirt and look at yourself in the mirror. If the outline of your gun is clearly visible or stands out prominently, try moving the holster back to 4 o’clock or, conversely, forward to 2 o’clock.
The good news is that with an IWB with a neoprene backpad, no matter where you decide to tuck in, it’s always going to be a comfortable fit. The backpad helps distribute the weight of the firearm evenly across the waistline.
How to use an IWB Holster
When looking for the ideal position for your tucked-in IWB holster, look for flat contours in your waistline. This is the best way to add an additional inch or two of width to your waistline without attracting as much attention. Again, depending upon the gun you use, some models will fit more flush with the waistline than others. Just stay patient and definitely consider adding a sweater, jacket, or suit coat over top.
Since the shirt is tucked behind the waistband and belt, it’s harder to get it out of the way compared to wearing an untucked shirt over your concealed carry gun and holster or a cover garment like a jacket. Untucked shirts are rather easy to clear; you basically move them out of the way.
A tucked shirt can get a little trickier. Not by too much, but by a bit. Therefore, make sure that you train for clearing the cover garment on a regular basis.
Drawing From A Concealed Carry Holster Behind A Tucked Shirt
If your concealed carry holster is concealed in this manner, there are some techniques for clearing the cover garment.

The grip must be strong; you have to rip the shirt clear of the holster to get onto the grip. When you clear the cover garment, it has to fully clear the pistol. If clearing the cover garment with one hand, grasp your shirt near the holster. If possible, use your support hand as an assist.
Much of the literature about the draw stroke suggests the support hand is supposed to be used to clear cover garments. There are some caveats, though. Not all people carry their pistol in a location easily accessed by the support hand. Also, that presumes you’d have use of that arm to begin with; most defensive shootings occur within a few feet so that’s not an assumption you should necessarily make.
Therefore, make sure you train to clear your cover garment one-handed.
Grasping the cover garment near the holster is essential. Since the shirt is held in place by some tension from being tucked behind the belt and waistband, you can’t move as much of the shirt as you could with one that wasn’t tucked.
Wherever on the waistband you carry your pistol, make sure to train the draw. The more you’ve trained for it, the more you can rely on muscle memory should the moment you need to use it ever arise.
Three Keys to Wearing a “Tuckable” Holster

A “tuckable” is a holster designed to be worn inside the waistband of your pants. A clip that fastens the holster to a belt allows a shirt to be tucked over the pistol and between the attaching clip and the holster. This allows the gun and holster, except for the belt clip, to be covered by a tucked-in shirt. But having one work perfectly for you and for the gun you’ll be carrying in it takes some thought and experimentation. These three fundamentals will guide you.
1. Conceal It Properly
Tuckables do not give you a cloak of invisibility. With most of them, the on your belt will be visible. Also, the gun under your shirt can “print,” or show through, many fabrics.
I have found that you get better concealment with a lighter fabric if the shirt is worn outside the pants and not tucked, which is another option with these holsters. Make sure the shirt is long enough to cover the gun when you move or bend over.
Bianchi Model 135 Suppression Holster This is the Bianchi Model 135 Suppression holster with a Model 1911 pistol. This comfortable holster has a padded, anti-microbial mesh fabric on the body side.
2. Keep It Comfortable
Not all holsters are created equal, and of course, neither are handguns. I love Model 1911 pistols, but all their protruding levers and latches will file your hide until you bleed if you don’t pad them. Minimalist holsters, like the Galco Skyops Holster or the Blackhawk Leather Tuckable Holster, work better with a “smoother” pistol like a Smith & Wesson M&P or a Glock than with a Model 1911.
The DeSantis Pocket-Tuk is one of the few holsters I could find that fits the S&W M&P Shield with a Crimson Trace laser sight installed. I find the smooth-sided Shield very comfortable to wear with this holster, and it is one of my preferred warm weather carry rigs.
Galco Skyops and Blackhawk Suede Leather Tuckable Holsters This is the Galco Skyops Holster and Blackhawk Leather Tuckable Holster, both with Model 1911 pistols. These holsters expose a lot of the pistol, so a smooth handgun will be more comfortable.
Leather-backed tuckable holsters such as the Galco KingTuk, CrossBreed SuperTuck, or one of the multitudes of clones now available will put a leather barrier between you and part or all of the gun. Such holsters are more comfortable because the gun won’t be directly against your skin or undershirt.
Some of the most comfortable tuckable holsters I have tried have a fabric backing, such as the Bianchi Model 135 Suppression holster. My 1911 rides low in this holster and the padded, anti-microbial mesh fabric is very comfortable against my body. The leather keeps the slide, hammer, and safety from touching me, so it’s very comfortable to carry. The padding makes it thicker than some other holsters, but in my opinion, the comfort makes up for that.

3. Use it for the Right Purpose
Tuckable holsters are made for concealment, not speed. While you may be able to draw and shoot in less than one second with your competition holster, that is not going happen with a tuckable. I did some testing and found that the average draw and shoot time was more like 2.2 to 3 seconds, even with practice.
Reholstering the gun may be difficult with some designs. Also, be very careful when reholstering, particularly with a striker-fired gun. There have been instances where a person’s shirt got inside the trigger guard, discharging the gun.

What’s the Best Position for a Tucked-In IWB?
Most wearers with an “inside the waistband” (IWB) holster position their holster at a 4 o’clock position if they’re right-handed and an 8 o’clock position if they’re left-handed. This positions the weapon slightly behind the front of your hip. Some wearers modify this position to a 4:30 or 7:30 position, respectively, which positions the gun slightly more behind the wearer’s back while still allowing for a comfortable, fast, and easy drawing motion. These positions work for a wide range of body types and most pants and shirts.
If you’re not sure what position will work best for you, begin by placing your holster directly at the 3 o’clock position, directly at the side of your dominant hand. From there, you can shift the gun and holster further back along the clock position until it’s in a comfortable, accessible point. Alternatively, you may prefer to move it forward, such as to the 2 o’clock position in front of your hip. As you’re deciding the best fit, also look at yourself in the mirror so you can make sure the holster isn’t jutting out visibly or changing your profile or silhouette. The primary goal is to keep the gun concealed, and you may have to train yourself into drawing your gun from a position that wasn’t originally the most comfortable.
Advantages of a 4 o’clock or 4:30 drawing position include:
Comfort: Most IWB holsters are designed with (or have options for) back padding so there’s little risk of you hurting your back if you fall backwards.
Easy Concealment: IWBs can be clipped at multiple points so they won’t visibly pinch or bunch up your shirt if you’re sitting and standing multiple times. Your back also has flatter planes than your hip and stomach, allowing for easier positioning.
Versatility: More guns of different sizes and styles can be concealed in this position than in others.
