How To Make The Perfect Winter Bed
Ah, to every season, turn turn. So begins the yearly tradition of watching the temperature drop and sweaters come out of the closet. Everyone’s got their perspective on layering to stay warm (but not sweaty) and cozy (but not frumpy) when it comes to their winter wardrobe, but we’re to talk you through the step-by-step process to layer up the ultimate winter hot spot: your bed.
The inexperienced go overboard on base layers, with stifling flannel sheets, then skimp on the top, with loosely woven blankets or cheaply-filled duvets. So we’re taking the opportunity to share our best practices, for anyone looking to transform their bed into a haven that looks like a dream and feels like the ultimate comfort zone. So hands off the thermostat, and cancel your order for the wearable sleeping bag. We’re making a bed so cozy you’ll prefer sleeping in the nude.
STEP 1: Lay Down The Sheets
Consider your own base knowledge of base layers: the items closest to your body soft, but more importantly, breathable. Here you’ve got options. If you like to keep things on the crisp side, our Percale gives you the hotel feel you crave, ensuring every night feels like you’ve gotten turndown service. Alternatively, it’s always linen season. Our Italian-made Linen Sheets offer a breezy base for those who sleep a little on the warmer side.
STEP 2: Layer In A Coverlet OR Quilt
Put the comforter down (not totally, but just for now). This is your sweater layer: something soft and just heavy enough to add a hint of weight and welcome insulation. Remember how excited you felt when that first whiff of sweater weather showed up in October? Our coverlet is the bedding equivalent, thanks to its unique Softexture wash and, like the perfect chunky sweater, offers a subtle contrast to your smooth sheets.
Prefer a slightly heavier-ply sweater? Meet its equivalent, the quilt. A cotton shell packed with premium fill adds substance without plumpness, so the bed still looks streamlined and elegant. This is also the key layer of your bed that you’ll want to drag off to the sofa for a marathon TV-watching session. (It’s machine-washable, aka popcorn-safe.)
STEP 3: Choose Your Comforter
Now we’re ready to get puffy. If you’re the type that often wakes up chilly, or always opts for the most heavy-duty winter jacket (the kind that looks and feels more like you’re shouting mush at huskies than walking to get coffee) it’s no contest: The All-Season, Down-Filled Comforter is your happy place.
Meanwhile, hot sleepers, even those living in the coldest temperatures, may prefer the Lightweight. (Truly, you should see how many of these we ship to Michigan.) It may be named “Lightweight” but it’s mighty, especially if it’s layered up properly.
The allergy-prone amongst us (bless you) can opt for our Down-Alternative Comforters, which replicate our (ethically sourced!) white duck-down fill brilliantly. And finally, whatever comforter you choose will look nice and contoured when wrapped up neatly into any of our duvet covers.
Sure, your eyes aren’t open to enjoy this view while you’re asleep, but why not give yourself some top-tier dream inspo before going to bed?
STEP 4: Throw On Something Extra
As for the equivalent of your scarf, hat, and gloves? A Throw or Quilt. Depending on how you’ve built your bed so far, you can add a final bit of weight and warmth that also increases your style points. Already used a Quilt as a lower layer? Go throw blanket. (It also serves nicely as an end-of-bed layer, for chilly feet). We’re partial to our Australian lambswool and Mongolian cashmere version, with the stripes and fringe, or maybe you want something with a little more breezy like our Edge Stripe Throw. If you went with the slightly lighter-weight coverlet as your sweater layer, this is your moment to add the Quilt as your top layer. Sensing the versatility here? Good. Our goal is to amp up your arsenal of cozy for you to stack up as you see fit.
Light layers mean you have the ability to gradually increase warmth based on your body temperature, and then fling them off, one by one. Especially helpful if you live somewhere with a finicky thermostat that cranks up for no reason at 4 AM. (Just us?)
Ultimately, like the perfect outfit, it’s up to you to figure out what feels right. This is more of a choose-your-own-adventure guide than a how-to manual. Play with layers, change things up, and you’ll know you’ve nailed it when you wake up feeling nice and toasty, like you never want to leave your brilliant cocoon. Know what? Who needs that winter jacket anyway. It’s not such a bad idea to stay in bed ‘til springtime.
5 Ways To Layer Your Bed For Warmth This Winter
Step 1: Mattress Topper
Building from the bottom of your bed, a mattress topper is the natural first step. Usually included to add an extra layer of comfort to a mattress, we tend to overlook a mattress topper’s insulating qualities. A topper works by trapping layers of air above the mattress, around your body. These pockets of insulation create a cosy atmosphere courtesy of your body heat, believe it or not. Depending on your comfort preference, choose anything from a microfibre to a memory foam mattress topper and relish in your new cloud-like surface.
Tip: to assist in keeping your topper clean, pop a protector on top!
How to Layer and Style Your Bed Like a Stylist in 2022
There are different ways to make your bed, depending on your style preference as well as the season. But you’ll always want a comfortable base with clean lines, plus premium layers you can drape, fold and stack to achieve the look of modern styles. Check out the details for your options then how to style a bed using these components.
Mattress Topper
The foundation of a great night’s sleep starts with your mattress , but a mattress topper offers the ability to customize your sleep experience.
Start with a mattress pad for your base, to add a protective layer between you and your mattress. A mattress topper also adds an extra layer of comfort. Consider upgrading to a Down Mattress Topper to feel like you’re sinking into a marshmallow-stuffed cloud. Or take comfort to the next-level with a Wool Mattress Topper that offers extra support while cradling your pressure points. The wool topper features a natural resilience to body impressions. Its breathable, moisture-wicking qualities provide a comfortable sleep year round.
Since the mattress topper rests underneath everything else on the bed, it’s important to find one with deep enough pockets to fit your mattress so it doesn’t lose its grip and bunch up. For help finding the best duvet for you, read the Guide to Mattress Toppers & Mattress Pads.
Sheets
The sheeting layer is essential because it’s the part of the bed you’ll come in contact with the most, so make sure you choose high-quality sheets. You’ll need a fitted sheet — that’s the sheet with the elastic around the edges — and a top sheet if you prefer one. Your choices for sheets depend on your preference for both the feel and look of the fabric. Whether you’re looking for the crisp, clean look of percale, the silky, luxurious sheen of sateen, the buttery soft finish of brushed cotton, or the relaxed, casual elegance of linen, Parachute sheeting has you covered in a variety of colors and styles. If you want to learn more about each sheeting option when thinking about how to make your bed, check out Parachute’s Fabric Guide .
