Can you screw into polystyrene?

Clear polystyrene appears to be a type of plastic, so I would say a wood drill bit should work. However, be careful about heat – you dont want to melt it. Take a break to let the bit cool if its starts getting hot.

How do you attach wood to foam board?

Sticking foam insulation to wood requires a special heavy-duty glue that sets the adhesive strongly. This glue adheres to all types of wood, from plywood to wood fiber. Choose either beadboard, rigid polyurethane or polyiso foam insulation (beadboard is less expensive).

How do you secure foam board to a wall?

How do you attach foam to metal?

You can also use silicone caulk or expanding spray foam as the adhesive to secure the rigid foam to the metal. After the adhesive dries completely under the foam insulation, apply seaming tape over all joints between the boards. If desired, you can apply silicone caulk between the joints instead of using seaming tape.

How do you connect Styrofoam together?

Generally an all purpose PVA glue that is water-based and safe for use by children can be used for gluing Styrofoam. These conventional PVA glues (wood working glue) are thick and suitable for use on virtually all craft surfaces. Glue has to be tacky style glue. There are specific styro craft glues on the market.

What glue do I use to stick foam together?

Loctite Foamboard Adhesive

The adhesive hardens in one hour (you can reposition materials until then) and fully cures in seven days. When dry, the adhesive is harder than foam board and light blue in color. It is excellent to use with rigid materials such as foam board, Styrofoam, polystyrene, and foam sheets.

Does mortar stick to foam?

After installing Styrofoam, you must use some cement or mortar to cover it up and harden the surface. If you want a highly reinforced structure, especially if you use a cheaper and “softer” polystyrene insulation, use some fiberglass mesh on the surface and apply a coat of mortar on the mesh.

What is foam board insulation?

Foam board insulation is a great alternative to the very common fiberglass batt insulation that is in most of our homes. It has a higher R-Value per inch of thickness, it’s resistant to moisture and is easy to work with.

There are a few different kinds of foam board insulation DIYers should know about:

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) . This is the same stuff your disposable coffee cup and is made out of and it’s used to protect fragile items in their packaging. It provides an R-value of 4 per inch of thickness and is the cheapest type of foam board insulation. EPS is used under roofing, over foundation walls and beneath siding.

This foam board insulation is the rigid pink or blue panels that can be found at home centers in many different thicknesses. It is denser than EPS and provides more R-Value with a rating of 5 per inch of thickness. This foam board insulation is available with straight or tongue-and-groove edges to help limit air movement. It is available in all different size configurations to accommodate lots of different applications. One common use of extruded polystyrene foam board is for foundation insulation panels.

Polyiso (Polyisocyanurate). This is an even more dense and more expensive foam board insulation. It provides an R-value of 6 per inch of thickness and often comes foil-faced to help reflect radiant heat. Polyiso comes in several thicknesses and is used over house sheathing underneath siding or in attic spaces where its reflective properties are very effective.

When to use foam board insulation?

Because of its resistance to moisture, foam board insulation is a great choice whenever and wherever there is a chance it could get wet, such as: an exterior foundation, inside a basement against the foundation, and on the outside of a house beneath a house wrap. Foam board insulation is more expensive than traditional batt insulation, so use it only when moisture is a factor and it makes sense with your budget.

How to use foam board insulation?

Foam board insulation is easy to cut with a circular saw with a masonry blade or scored with a utility knife and snapped like you would drywall. To attach the insulation, you can use screws with large washers, a special adhesive made for adhering foam board insulation or, for smaller pieces, you can seal them in with caulk or spray foam.

Location: Jupiter, FL Sep 200710Jupiter, FL OGM Is there a recommended method for installing screws into a foam core? For the hard top I’m building I plan on installing an aluminum track for the isenglass enclosure. The track will be screwed into the top and I’m concerned that the skin will not be sufficient to hold the screws. I plan on gluing the track with 5200 also, but I’m still concerned. I could inlay a strip of wood in th foam when I’m building it, but didn’t know if there is an easier way. I thought that there was an insert like the ones you put in drywall. Does anyone know about them or have suggestions. OGM, #1 Joined: Jul 2006

Location: Iroquois, Ontario Jul 200656685Iroquois, Ontario KnottyBuoyz The wood inlay is a good idea or a high density foam insert. Include it when you lay up the top. Next popular method is to overdrill the holes and fill with thickened epoxy. Then drill out for screws. 5200 is gonna be a b*tch if you ever have to take the track down. 4200 might be a better choice or a foam gasket. Sorry, just that most things I build I have to eventually take apart!! Maybe it’s just me!

post some pics of your project OGM I’d be interested in seeing how you do it.

Location: Palm Beach Gardens, FL May 200725Palm Beach Gardens, FL JRL I used SS nut-certs on a set of radome couplers I made a few months back. Sealed the back side with 3M DP-420. Although it was anchored in 9 layers of plain weave E glass.

Also had good success using those twist in bolt inserts (cant remeber the name). I believe there meant for wood. I used them as the boot anchors in a kiteboard that me and a buddy made. We set them into the foam before the layup. Filled the thread with plasticine. Then performed the layup on top of them. When the glass is nearly dry you cut it away with a razor and then dig the putty out.

And another way is to use solid fiberglass rod. Cut them to size and counter sink them into the foam (before the layup). When the layup is done drill a slightly undersized pilot hole before you screw into it and your all set. Just make a location template before you start your layup. JRL, #3

HELP – anchoring screws into EPS foam

Re: anchoring screws into EPS foam (EPS = Expanded PolyStyrene)

I am making this a specific post for the future benefit of the entire WWW browsing community.

My skylight interior plastic trim, known in the trade as a Garnish, has 8 screws that anchor it into the underside of my Aliner Roof.

these screws normally bite into the cheesy interior thin plywood. You can upsize the screw once (which I did a while back), but when that stops working, one is left trying to get a screw to bite into EPS foam. Which is not so easy.

Do any of you have any tricks for doing this – in a reversible manner – so that the garnish can be removed at a later date? (i.e., not gluing the screws in place).

The only trick I found on WWW was to put bamboo sticks in the hole in the EPS. Toothpicks may also work.

What other options has anyone had success with?

So you have finished reading the how to screw into foam topic article, if you find this article useful, please share it. Thank you very much.
