With the releases of the Spiderman movies over the past few years, not to mention a December 2021 release imminent, it’s no wonder this character is on the minds of kids. In fact, around 1.8 million kids are thinking about it because that’s how many kids are planning to dress up like Spiderman this year.

2. Princess

Many children dream of being a princess and hope to make that dream a reality, even if it’s just for a day. Approximately 1.6 million kids will dress up as their favorite princess this year, whether it’s expressing their inner Elsa, Belle or Mulan.

3.Batman

Batman has always been a popular character, even for children in the 1940s when there were only comics of the hero. He has stood the test of time and 1.2 million kids are plotting to save the day as this beloved hero on Halloween.

4. Superhero

Batman isn’t the only crime fighter kids are looking up to this year. Another 1.2 million kids are planning to dress up as their favorite superhero – everyone from Superman to Thor to Wonder Woman.

5. Witch

A witch is perhaps the most classic and iconic Halloween costume since the start of the holiday and the fifth most popular costume in 2021. Kids can take inspiration from the more recent 2020 release of The Witches, or possibly the original Hocus Pocus,” a popular Halloween movie for almost 30 years.

Since the Twilight movies were added to Netflix, the vampire hype has picked up a bit. That’s perhaps why 1.6 million people plan to dress up as vampires, whether sporting the sparkling Edward Cullen vibe or a classic Dracula outfit.

In 2020 mobile game Among Us was the talk of the gaming world and this year it’s the 16th most popular costume rising in popularity in Jacksonville, Florida.

Other notable costumes in the top 50 include Pokémon at #50, Fortnite at #44, Velma Dinkley (of Scooby-Doo fame) at #42, Poison Ivy (the comic book villain) at #33, Beetlejuice at #24, and all 1980s -Decade ranked 18th.

The History of Halloween Costumes

Halloween has a rich, centuries-old history (you know, what about the dead coming back to earth and people trying to drive away spirits), but dressing up in costumes and trick-or-treating as we know it today was just beginning to emerge in the 1930s. In the 1950s, kids could buy just about any costume their hearts desired and go door-to-door on a candy hunt.

Each year, however, a specific Halloween costume seems to be on everyone’s trick-or-treaters mind. Exactly why are these overwhelmingly popular costume ideas catching on? “The celebration of Halloween often reflects what’s going on in our culture,” says Lesley Bannatyne, Halloween expert and author of Halloween Nation: Behind the Scenes of America’s Fright Night. “Halloween feeds on the zeitgeist in a way other holidays can’t. It expresses who we are and what we value, what we think about, what we fear or what we love – from bird flu to Game of Thrones to politics and Frozen.”
