A Brief History of Halloween
Halloween is celebrated on October 31st each year, with this year’s Halloween taking place on a Sunday. The tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, where people lit bonfires and wore costumes to ward off spirits.
The concept of Halloween only gained popularity when it reached the United States. Borrowing from European traditions, Americans began dressing in costumes and going from house to house asking for food or money, a practice that eventually became the trick-or-treating tradition of today.
Other superstitions also began to form around the holiday. Young women believed they could guess what their future husbands would look like by performing tricks with apple peels or mirrors.
Over time, Halloween has evolved from its focus on witchcraft and spirits to the festival we know and love today – a day that focuses on games, seasonal foods and festive costumes.

20 of the most iconic outfits from ‘Mean Girls’
Most prominently on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, Y2K fashion was widely embraced by Gen-Z, a generation too young to fully embrace the then-favored cropped, butt-hugging ensembles. Now that young adults are getting nostalgic for a simpler time, they’re reaching for all the cropped tees, baggy pants, and tacky accessories their bank accounts can handle.
The era was known for excess, with fashion then largely driven by pop culture and ultra-consumption. Think designer monograms and glitzy logos on everything, with a daily wardrobe full of pieces that exist in the sartorial limbo of streetwear-meets-glamour. It almost feels like a natural place to return to, given the convergence of Logomania-led fashion, the crossover between streetwear and luxury, the frighteningly self-centered nature of social media, and nostalgia for a simpler time.
Here we dive head first into the Y2K fashion trend to cover everything you need to know about what it is, how it came about and more importantly how you can incorporate it into your closet as a grown adult – without how you look. again in a midlife crisis.

Aladdin wished for two wishes and then granted Genie’s freedom for his last wish! Genie’s newfound freedom allowed him to venture out into the world and experience everything he could never do. He was no longer trapped in that tiny lamp as he had been thousands of years ago.
Genie wasn’t just known for granting wishes to strangers; He also showed how loyal and brave he could be when he helped Aladdin defeat Agrabah’s Grand Vizier, Jafar. Genie might have been scared at times, but he never left Aladdin’s side. We all know it wasn’t because he held onto him until he granted those three wishes for Aladdin. While it’s tempting to just throw some fake blood all over a Victorian-looking dress, some A-listers go above and beyond to come up with brilliant ideas every year.
One of the best comes courtesy of Kim Kardashian, who won everything in 2019 by recreating Elle Wood’s Harvard University admissions video. To be fair, the whole Kardashian-Jenner clan always comes up trumps, and of course Heidi Klum always pulls off a showstopper by bringing in an entire team of makeup artists to create her looks, which in the past have included aliens, old ladies and Jessica Rabbit belonged to .
There are a few celebrities who have gone out of their way to tickle our fun bones with creative Halloween costumes that are a twist on the usual sexy everything. Adele, who wears facial prosthetics as The Mask, and Fergie, as the child pageant star, walk the line between nightmare and comedy. Colton Haynes was iconic as Miss Piggy, while Katy Perry went all out as the fiery red Cheetoh.

Did you know that witch costumes have been one of the best-selling Halloween themes for decades? It’s true! They are very popular and there are so many different styles too. So many that we’ve written an entire guide to witch costumes! You have historical Salem witches and fictional witches, like the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch of the South from L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. And then there are mythological witches, like the green-skinned witches. Witches aside, there are so many cultural depictions of witches from American, European, and African folklore that you’ll have a hard time picking your favorite. And you can also find witches from the Harry Potter books and movies, Hocus Pocus and Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty. There are so many witch costumes for women and girls to choose from!
2. Clown costumes
Shop all clown costumes
Clown costumes have also been worn for centuries, although not always associated with Halloween. Pierrot was a Franco-Italian cartoon character 500 years ago, and both men and women still wear vintage pantomime costumes. The tradition of circus clowns is half as old, but it is constantly being revitalized and updated. Some of these circus clowns are happy and wacky, while others – like this spooky clown costume – are more sinister. Jester outfits are another centuries-old tradition that has been revisited in recent decades due to the DC Comics character Harley Quinn.
3. Funny costumes
Buy all funny costumes
Halloween isn’t always about being serious. It’s also about having fun and wearing something ridiculous and quirky. Comedy styles have changed over the centuries, but at their core, funny Halloween costumes will always have their place as part of our Halloween traditions. There are silly characters and concepts like the flying pig that make us giggle, and we love the newer inflatable costumes! Food costumes are their own brand of wit too, from eggplant to bacon — which is in pretty much everything these days. Well, it’s in Halloween costumes too. Which makes sense, since a side of bacon was the winning costume in one of our favorite early Halloween costume contests!
4. Pirate Costumes
Purchase all pirate costumes
Pirates have been popular costume ideas for decades, and not just for Halloween! Gasparilla (which began in 1904) and other pirate festivals are great excuses to don your pirate costume outside of Halloween, but you’re bound to see plenty of buccaneers while you’re playing trick-or-treating. They can pretend to be famous pirates like Blackbeard and Anne Bonny, or go for a pop culture pirate look. Many fans love Captain Hook and Jack Sparrow costumes! However, don’t let someone’s idea of what a pirate should be dictate what your pirate outfit will look like. We’re sure you’ll find the perfect pirate costume to fit your style!
5. Vampire Costumes
Buy all vampire costumes
Vampires are another supernatural creature from folklore. They were once thought of as grotesque monsters, but thanks to Bram Stoker’s Dracula, they’re now considered charismatic and seductive anti-heroes. These terrifying vampires and vampires are simply adorable in their velvety Victorian dresses! Some outfits also have bat-shaped veils and collars or ruffles, like these vampire costumes for kids and toddlers. But you’ll also find creepy vampire costumes that are more scrawny and terrifying, inspired by F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. Just like other Halloween costume themes, it’s all about variety!
6. Animal Costumes
Buy all animal costumes
Animals are one of the most old-fashioned Halloween costumes. Vintage Halloween photos invariably feature some sort of animal costume, and they’re usually pretty scary. You can try these looks, sure, or you can go for something a lot cuter. We recommend finding something cute or even silly! How about a cat costume? They are always in fashion, just like real cats! Likewise fox and dog costumes. And there are all kinds of animal accessory kits for adults (or anyone else) who don’t want to wear an entire costume!
7. Devil Costumes
Shop devil costumes here
Devil costumes have long been a part of traditional Halloween celebrations. While the devil costumes of yesteryear were primarily about horns, pitchforks, and fiery fate, there are a variety of more recent devil costume styles. They range from comfy and cool to sexy devil costumes with sequins. The best part is that with so many choices, you can create your own unique style. These traditional Halloween costumes might not break new ground, but you can’t beat a classic.
8. Zombie Costumes
Buy all zombie costumes
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear someone talk about spooky costumes? Maybe ghosts and skeletons? We bet zombies were at the forefront of your mind too! The best thing about zombies is that you can basically take any profession or character and turn them into a zombie. However, if you’re not DIY savvy, that’s fine too. We have plenty of zombie halloween costumes to buy online so you’ll be ready for your monster mash!
9. Skeleton Costumes
Buy all skeleton costumes
Skeletons are another classic Halloween costume theme. The earliest vintage skeleton costumes were just black clothing with white bones painted on them. Our classic skeleton costume mimics this look, but we also have a more modern, chic twist with the glamorous women’s skeleton costume. Then there are fun, nostalgic costumes like the skeleton suits worn by the Cobra Kai kids in The Karate Kid. And of course you have ghost pirate skeletons, because skeletons go great with other types of costumes. What’s next? A skeleton ninja? Maybe a dinosaur skeleton? Or even a skeletonized Victorian gentleman? Okay, these are all fantastic traditional Halloween costume ideas!
10. Ghost Costumes
Purchase all ghost costumes
Cultures have told ghost stories since ancient times. You can’t throw a stone without going, well, right through a ghost. Because they’re disembodied, right? Okay, it’s not a big metaphor. But what we are saying is that there are all kinds of ghost stories and just as many ways that ghosts are portrayed. They have ghosts that pull chains and do other spooky things and ghost brides that haunt houses. Then you have your “friendly” ghosts in the night because they can’t see well in this leaf. (Safety first!) And then there are evil spirits stealing souls, which ends up in Grim Reaper’s territory!
11. Scarecrow Costumes
Buy all scarecrow costumes
Nothing feels quite like fall like the sight of haystacks, corn husks, and scarecrow decorations outside. Scarecrows also make great Halloween costumes! While you have the famous scarecrow character that always features in Wizard of Oz group costumes, we have other options as well. Cute and classic scarecrow costumes are beautiful and comfortable for a full day of fall festivals. And then there are scarecrow costumes for horror fans. It’s great to have the flexibility to choose your favorite scarecrow!
12. Pumpkin costumes
Buy all pumpkin costumes
Pumpkin masks are a Halloween classic, and we’re not talking face scrubs here. (Pause for laughter.) But seriously, people have been carving faces into pumpkins and turnips, making grotesque jack-o’-lanterns for spiritual or religious purposes, or even just to scare people, for hundreds of years. This is exactly what the Headless Horseman does in many adaptations of Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. (It helps that the jack-o’-lantern replaces his severed head!) If you want to scare your neighbors with vintage Halloween masks like the ones kids have had for decades, a spooky pumpkin costume is just the ticket. But pumpkin costumes can also be fun and not scary at all, as you can see from these kid and toddler costumes!
13. Bat Costumes

14. Mummy costumes
Buy all mummy costumes
The universal classic monsters absolutely dominate when it comes to classic Halloween costume ideas, and the mummy is no different. 15. Black cat costumes
Buy all cat costumes
You knew it was coming – the black cat Halloween costume. Black cats have been one of the most popular Halloween icons for years! They’re all over the place in vintage Halloween decor. You can find black cat clothes for Halloween and of course lots of costumes. While they’re great on their own, adding a black cat with a witch costume is the epitome of a classic couples costume for Halloween. You can even turn it into an incredibly cute mommy and me costume idea with an adorable baby cat costume that will make everyone on your social networks jealous. If you know your way around makeup, you can do something reminiscent of the Cats musical! Sometimes the best Halloween costume ideas are the most flexible.
16 spider costumes
Buy all spider costumes
Halloween is all about our favorite crawlies, and what’s spookier than a spider costume for Halloween? You can look pretty scary with all those eyes and legs! Black widow spiders and tarantulas are some of the most common spider costume ideas, but you can also find some cute spider web ponchos for a more casual twist. You will definitely feel right at home with all the giant spider web decorations!
17. Professional costumes
Purchase all uniform costumes
You’re probably well acquainted with the popularity of the sexy nurse costume, but professional costumes are tried-and-true classics that let you slip into another role for the night. Astronauts, firefighters, sailors and other uniform costume ideas are great for Halloween, but your kids can always add them to their costume case too! Being able to wear your costume more than one night a year is great and kids love to pretend to dress up. That’s not to say adults can’t have their own fun with a professional costume, though. You may not have landed your dream job, but you can change roles just for Halloween.
18. Universal monster costumes
Buy all spooky costumes
We’ve already mentioned some popular universal monster costumes, like vampires and mummies, but let’s not skip Wolfman, Frankenstein’s monster, and the invisible man! These classic horror movie costumes are Halloween staples, and we’d love to see your take on your personal favorites. Monster Movie Watch Party, anyone?

The History of Halloween Costumes
Halloween has a rich, centuries-old history (you know, what about the dead coming back to earth and people trying to drive away spirits), but dressing up in costumes and trick-or-treating as we know it today was just beginning to emerge in the 1930s. In the 1950s, kids could buy just about any costume their hearts desired and go door-to-door on a candy hunt.
Each year, however, a specific Halloween costume seems to be on everyone’s trick-or-treaters mind. Exactly why are these overwhelmingly popular costume ideas catching on? “The celebration of Halloween often reflects what’s going on in our culture,” says Lesley Bannatyne, Halloween expert and author of Halloween Nation: Behind the Scenes of America’s Fright Night. “Halloween feeds on the zeitgeist in a way other holidays can’t. It expresses who we are and what we value, what we think about, what we fear or what we love – from bird flu to Game of Thrones to politics and Frozen.”
These are the costumes everyone had to have in the year you were born – from 1950 to 2005. Get ready for a serious walk down memory lane.
