Some things to keep in mind are: if you are short, a brim or trim that swings up to give you the illusion of height will prevent you from getting lost under a hat, while if you are tall, something wider can be more flattering. On the wedding day, you are expected to greet and kiss the guests. So consider whether you need something that sits on one side so you can offer an available cheek to kiss, or would you appreciate a brim that makes it difficult for you to reach out to people and keep them at a distance!

If you keep your hat on during meals, will you prevent anyone by your side from joining in the conversation, or will you end up tickling their face with a feather? In general, we don’t think these things are necessarily a bad thing. At the end of the day, if someone else knocks on your hat, at least that’s a topic of conversation!

Shoes and handbags: Shoes, bag and hat don’t all have to match, as long as your outfit harmonizes as a whole, all three can be different colors if desired. Often we recommend that two items in one color are enough to coordinate, again you can match one on top of the other! Bags are often left on a bench or under a table, so when a tint color works just as well, it’s worth considering how much attention you need to pay to the exact color. If the wedding is at your home or at a hotel you’re staying at, do you really need a bag?

However, bags can be lovely props when photos are being taken, or give you something to do with your hands when you’re nervous and fidgety, and store tissues for those tearful moments. Finding a shoe in the right colour, style and fit can be a nightmare as many people settle for two of the three.

Classic or modern? There is no right or wrong here, because fashions can change, but they also come back. Be yourself and feel good. A timeless look will always be classy and stylish, but it can prevent you from having fun with your outfit. Going for something very contemporary can go out of style…think ’80s shoulder pads and Princess Diana’s wedding dress. But that doesn’t mean it’s wrong; The event is happening at a specific time, so why not dress for the time? As I always say… in 20 years what would you like to see in that photo on the mantelpiece? At the end of the day, this will be the only lasting part of what you choose to wear, other than the wonderful memories of the wedding day itself.

How long do you keep a hat on? The tradition is that everyone should keep their hats on until the mother of the bride takes hers off… so if you’re the mother of the bride, do what you will! It’s really to each his own. We strive to make all of our hats, hatters and fascinators as comfortable as possible (the bigger and heavier the style, the harder this is as we always struggle with gravity!).

So if you want to leave your hat on well into the night, do it! If it’s a spring wedding, hats can be designed to be worn with a coat so they’re perfect for the ceremony and photos outside, but may not work if you’re inside at the reception and the coat is removed. In these situations we can make a small fascinator that complements your outfit, is easy to wear and continues your desired look into the evening. Ultimately, it’s up to you, but no one will be angry if you take off your hat after the ceremony, after breakfast, or just before bed!

Why not take the opportunity to wear a hat or fascinator and keep it on for as long as possible! Don’t worry, etiquette says women should only wear hats indoors before 6pm and men should never wear hats indoors!

Hats don’t suit me: how often do we hear that? Probably every day and several times! As we get to know our customers, we often find that they actually match hats. Many are just a little afraid of them, having never worn one; they think they look like their mother in a hat, the only connection to hats is an old-school hat, or they’ve only ever tried on hats in department stores with a mass-market collection without an assistant to help you. Let me assure you that wedding costume jewelry is a whole different ball game than the above.

This should include dress, jacket, jewellery, purse, sling, shoes etc. If you don’t already have some of these items, that’s fine. But if you have already bought them, we strongly advise you to bring them with you so that we can style the hat to perfection without having to guess how it would go with the other elements of your outfit! During the consultation we will go through the shapes and styles, narrowing down using your input and our expertise, from there we will work on colors and trimmings until you are happy with everything from the head fit to the final quote.

For made to order hats and fascinators we ask for a minimum lead time of 6 weeks but where possible longer lead times are appreciated and will allow you to have your piece ready and safe at home well in advance of the event. All of the hats in the boutique can be bought off the shelf and taken away immediately, although many pieces can be tweaked and edited in the shop or given a secondary color at short notice to make them work for you if there isn’t enough lead time for custom orders. So don’t panic if time is short!

Once your hat is ready we invite you back to the store to try it on and make sure you are happy with everything. Once you are satisfied you can take it away, otherwise any changes or adjustments will be made until you are completely satisfied with your order.

Don’t forget that hats are a topic of conversation! People will remember your hat or headpiece over any dress or your shoes for years, as they are the crowning but often underappreciated part of an outfit. When the wedding night turns into a party, everyone will want to try on your hat… dresses and shoes will never get the same attention! Ever wondered why wearing hats and fascinators to the races is a thing?

“Racing has been called the sport of kings for a reason. It’s an expensive sport, so people who could afford to keep a stable, look after horses and pay the people who ride them had a lot of money,” said Melbourne-based hatter Richard Nylon.

“Money goes with prestige, with precision comes fashion, and back then fashion went with hats.

“It became a way for a lady to show off her status and fashion, and in the days when women were really owned by men, it was a way for men to show off their wealth – so they could make sure their lady.” dressed was the finest, most tasteful, and the latest fashion.”

Fast forward to now and it’s still a firm tradition on the racing scene and one that needs to be honored. Kate Waterhouse, racer queen, media personality and Sydney Spring Carnival ambassador agrees.

“Wearing headgear on race day is a really important tradition. The race is a unique occasion and there aren’t many other places to wear a hat. That doesn’t mean you have to wear a massive big hat if you don’t feel comfortable, there are many different alternatives – but we do have to honor a tradition that goes back years and years ago when they wore top hats and tails.”

“My mother [Gai Waterhouse] has been getting ready for races every Saturday since I was very young, before I can remember. When she was getting ready I always played dress up. She would leave the races and I would be left with this big pile of dresses and gloves and hats and headgear and lipstick. I thought it was my personal wardrobe!” recalls Waterhouse.

So what’s in fashion this racing season? We asked Nylon who knows his headgear.

“The trends are towards headdresses, it’s like taking a necklace and putting it on your head – it’s a young trend and we’ve seen it a lot in the last season. There is also a big trend in boat hats – very simple looking hats with a simple shape that is very flattering. We also still see the more structured, traditional pieces that go quite high, and a lot of veil too.”

“I wish for the return of extravagance in headgear. As a milliner, I naturally wish for more statement pieces and hats. But at the end of the day, you have to be comfortable in what you wear,” says Nylon.

Not sure where to start? Invest in a versatile piece.

“When investing in a hat, think about the color of your hair. If you wear a dark hat and have dark hair, it will get lost in photos and it can look like part of your hair – so try to have some contrast. If you’re new to headwear, try a nice piece on a headband — these pieces aren’t hard to wear,” Nylon said.

Last but not least, Nylon offers some great advice when it comes to caring for your new purchase.

“Hats should be kept in boxes that do not rest on the brim but are opened open on the crown, with tissue paper supporting the brim underneath. Fascinators should also be placed on tissue paper. Silk, feathers and materials are tasty for moths, so be careful.”

Shop these styles now

There are no hard and fast rules as to how small or large your fascinator should be, but there are a few traditional guidelines to follow.

If your fascinator is for a wedding, traditionally the mother of the bride has the largest fascinator of all the guests. It really is time to be bold and go for something bold and beautiful! The groom’s mother could also opt for a large fascinator. Wedding guests would typically opt for fascinators that are smaller than the mothers of the bride and groom. Traditionally, the closer the relationship with the people getting married, the bigger the hat!

If your fascinator is for races like Ascot, the general rule is the bigger the better! You’ll see all sorts of great and fabulous creations throughout the races, so don’t be afraid to go for something different and outstanding!

What to wear to the races

Many people choose to dress up for a day at the races and while this is often not mandatory it is considered part of the race day experience. The Racing Post has compiled a list of everything you need to know when deciding what to wear to the races.

While far from mandatory in all enclosures, smart attire is the accepted dress code for race-goers. Sneakers and shorts are widely considered unacceptable, although they are not prohibited in some enclosures or at some meetings.

Classic men’s flat racing attire is a collared shirt with pants and smart shoes. Some choose to finish off the look with a tie and blazer, but that’s a personal preference and to some extent dictated by the weather.

Jumps meetings tend to adapt to the weather, as opposed to a strict dress code, as most large meetings take place during the winter months. Wearing tweed is an old tradition among jump fans, but that’s just personal preference.

Also when deciding what to wear to the Cheltenham Festival it is best to dress appropriately for the weather unless you are lucky enough to be a corporate guest in which case a suit may be more appropriate.

Many ladies attending flat race meetings during the summer associate a day at the races with a day where they can dress up in all their glitz and glamour, although in many areas this is not mandatory. Some of the more prestigious meetings and the ever-increasing number of women-specific days put fashion in the spotlight, while some meetings offer competitions for the best-dressed racegoers.

As with men, weather-appropriate clothing applies here in winter, heels are not advisable in the expected wet conditions.

Royal Ascot – a special occasion

Royal Ascot is a prestigious five-day gathering in June steeped in history and one of its most traditional elements is the dress code. The racecourse imposes strict dress codes, failure to comply with which may result in denial of entry.

For example, the Royal Enclosure requires all gentlemen to wear a three-piece morning suit and top hat at all times. Ladies must wear a hat or head covering at all times and adhere to an extensive list of restrictions on their outfits. Ascot also recently introduced a rule that all gentlemen should wear socks.
