How do you wear a fascinator to the races?
A fascinator is much lighter than a full hat and is worn using either a narrow headband or a sliding comb. Often easier to wear all day long, the fascinator should be placed on the same side as your parting. Always remember to check your appearance from the back, once secured.
Should I wear my hair up or down with a fascinator?
The Best Hairstyles with Fascinators
You can wear your donut bun in the best position to complement your fascinator – up high, down low, off to the side or in the centre. Braids in any form are on trend, whether all up, all down or half up and down, they always bring glamour to your hairstyle.
What do you wear on your head to the races?
Both the fascinator and the cocktail hat are best worn with a dress for the races. If you choose to wear a two piece skirt suit, you should be looking for a racing hat instead.

Personally, I know nothing about horses, but I’m indeed an expert at throwing back the bubbles while watching others who know what they’re doing (I even try to pat them on the back as a congratulations, but I miss her back quite often and watch my leg give way under my open palm…nothing beats a good slap on the thigh I guess).
BUT now let’s talk about race wear and the importance of NOT picking a color in your dress or shoes to match your fascinator.
NO! Let your headpiece be a character card, your signature, a period at the end of what you’re trying to say.
Make them STAND UP AND NOTE! or at least when you get up – they notice.
Are fascinators still in fashion?
The popular British headwear is commonly worn at weddings.
While there may be no royal wedding in the works right now, we’re still dreaming about royal nuptials past. One of our favorite fashion details (besides the wedding dress, of course)? The royal wedding guest attire. And more particularly, the fascinators.

What is a Fascinator? A fascinator is a high society headgear often worn by women at weddings and other events in the UK. An alternative to a hat, it usually consists of a large decorative design attached to a ribbon or clip.
It’s hard to pinpoint the exact origins of the fascinator, but they can perhaps be traced back to the 1770s, when Marie Antoinette frequently included feathers in her updos. In the 19th century, fascinators became popular as lightweight knitted headgear, and in the 1980s the style was popularized by London-based milliners Stephen Jones and Philip Treacy, who often created pieces for British celebrities.
Americans became obsessed with the word “fascinator” during and after the royal wedding of Kate Middleton and Prince William. It was featured in every report of the extravagant day, which was as much about fashion as it was about the new royal couple themselves. Their obsession continued well into Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding seven years later. Viewers around the world were shown how people in England dress for weddings and the whole world fell in love with fascinators.
Fascinator FAQs
Why do you wear a fascinator? What does it symbolize?
For some women it’s a status symbol or an honor of tradition, for others it’s pure fun. Depending on the event, there’s often an unspoken competition for the best fascinator or headpiece, and that’s where the fun comes in. Some of my clients wear them as a form of self-expression, particularly the more elaborate and artistic pieces.
What distinguishes a fascinator from other headgear?
Not everything that is worn on the side of the head is considered a fascinator. Usually it is created with some feathers, veil, crib and a wide range of ornaments that have mass appeal.
Are there certain fascinator styles that are better suited to a wedding?
It all depends on the requirements that the couple will formulate in their invitation. If you are invited to a wedding in the British Isles, this will be stated in the dress code. The word “encouraged” is often used. However, it has become a tradition to adorn the head with at least something chic and classy, and that is why fascinators have become so popular for weddings. For the wedding season, I mainly work with Sinamay straws, paradisiacal straw-like structures that are beautifully elegant and immaculately adorned.
What is typically worn with a fascinator?
It depends on the complexity, embellishments and overall design of the headdress. They look great with a dress or an elegant, well-fitting pantsuit. I am happy to help my clients with the final details. I always later take a photo of my clients wearing the fascinator properly for reference. One should have a cohesive look from head to toe – there’s nothing worse than a fascinator as an afterthought.
How should I style my hair while wearing one?
As long as you can securely attach the fascinator to your head, you are free to style your hair. Just remember that they are traditionally worn on the right side.
Go to a milliner who has experience making headwear for special occasions. Most importantly, find your comfort zone and don’t get on your feet.
Are there any fascinator trends that we should know about?
Everything from perches to bold and unusual architectural shapes is required for weddings. Monochromatic color palettes from head to toe are always on trend and of course there are many variations on the classic disc-like structure – from wide to upswept shapes with twists and turns.
How have fascinator styles evolved over the years?
There are many new and innovative millinery materials and techniques. There is also plenty of creative couture headwear in interesting and modern designs. Really, the sky is the limit.
Beforehand, we have compiled some of the best royal fascinators in history.
Should a fascinator match shoes or dress?
Whilst it is possible to build an outfit around a statement fascinator, it is often best to choose your dress first. This means you can pick a fascinator that matches or compliments the exact colour of the dress.

If your fascinator is for a wedding, traditionally the mother of the bride has the largest fascinator of all the guests. It really is time to be bold and go for something bold and beautiful! The groom’s mother could also opt for a large fascinator. Wedding guests would typically opt for fascinators that are smaller than the mothers of the bride and groom. Traditionally, the closer the relationship with the people getting married, the bigger the hat!
If your fascinator is for races like Ascot, the general rule is the bigger the better! You’ll see all sorts of great and fabulous creations throughout the races, so don’t be afraid to go for something different and outstanding!

Chic hairstyles for mothers of brides and grooms
The latest hairstyles we have selected will help all the mothers of the bride and groom decide in advance what the best wedding day hairstyle is. Here is a selection of trendy, classic and elegant updos and downdos for different tastes. In the pictures below you will find creative ideas for curly, thick and fine curls.
#1: Loose curly half updo with bouffant
This loose curly half updo is great for medium to long hair. First, leave the side sections of hair out of the initial bouffant. Once the bouffant is backcombed and pinned, pull both side parts around to meet at the back of the head and then flip them like you would with a topsy tail ponytail. Pull on random sections to add volume and less perfection to the top part of your hairstyle. The result is a stunning, dramatic hairstyle with enhanced volume.
#2: Half Up Curly Style with Highlights
If your daughter and her fiancé are planning a traditional wedding celebration, you probably want a stylish, tasteful look. In this case, it is not the best time to experiment with new extravagant hairstyles. A half up half down style with curls is classic and can easily be jazzed up with a fun accessory.
#3: Fancy Flowing Ponytail
Women with medium length hair can have the same fullness problem with ponytails as with low buns. To avoid a limp look, create volume with updo curls and thin side bangs. The style will have the look of a high loose curly ponytail.
#4: Low Updo for the Mother of the Bride
Cute updos are popular mother of the bride hairstyles that are quick and easy to put together in a snap. This one features long, thin bangs and a voluminous, shaggy bun at the back. The style might seem so casual (so you can try it), but it’s absolutely perfect for a daytime wedding.
#5: Soft shoulder-length waves
Opt for unconventional mother of the bride hair for sultry beachy waves. It’s a youthful and vibrant look for a mom who keeps up with fashion and hair trends. The look is especially nice to show off the color variations within your curly lob.
#6: Pulled up hairstyle
Whether you are in your 40s or 70s this hairstyle will look amazing and flatter you. Upswept hairstyles are timeless and work for a variety of hair types. Mother of the Bride hairstyles don’t have to be matronly – opt for this classy, beautiful hairstyle with youthful curls instead.
#7: Subtle curls and bun
Whether you are the mother of the bride or the mother of the groom, this understated updo will definitely suit you. It has curly hair that is gathered to the nape of the neck, and this works well for short hair too, not just long locks—which is great considering women tend to keep their hair a bit shorter as they age.
#8: French roller for shorter hair
Looking sophisticated and elegant, the mother of the bride wears a sleek French roll. The height at the crown creates a little puff inherent in formal updos. If you plan to dance a lot, the roller will keep your hair clean throughout the evening.
#9: Sleek chignon with a bouffant
Perfect wedding hairstyles for the mother of the bride are classic and timeless. Such a stylish updo will never look outdated in photos. The lines of this knot are sleek and feminine. A few loose tendrils caress the cheeks and neck.
#10: Updo with twists and bouffant
Plenty of twists and turns make this mother of the bride hairstyle an ideal choice for shorter hair. Tucking and pinning the ends of the braids gives the effect of quite a voluminous updo for long hair. Just tease the roots and keep the hairdo slightly loose.
#11: Modern updo
When your hair is highlighted, all the colors in your strands are beautifully showcased with this style. This hairstyle works for medium hair – meaning both length and texture. If your hair is very thick or long (or too thin or short), this hairstyle can prove a bit tricky.
#12: Messy Updo for Layered Hair
If you are looking for attractive mother of the bride updos for weddings with lots of activity and dancing planned, a curly updo style is a great option. It works well for women with layered hair because it doesn’t look messy if some of the layers don’t stay perfectly tucked in while having a ball.
#13: Feathered Chignon for Shorter Hair
Mothers of the bride who are over 50 can wear their short hair in a loose, low chignon bun with lots of feathery ends. It is effortless to style in no time and is particularly attractive for women with short to medium length hair.
#14: Wavy updo with hair accessories
Hair accessories will give your tresses an instant style update. Sparkly pieces are particularly favored for weddings to go all out for the occasion. A ruffled updo can be adorned with a standout piece of jewelery to complement the asymmetry and add some sparkle.
#15: Brushed beauty
When it comes to choosing a decent hairstyle from the variety of mother of the bride hairstyles, you want to make sure that it is both sophisticated and age-appropriate. This brushed low style is formal enough for the wedding day, but it won’t overwhelm the bride’s hair.
#16: Voluminous Curly Updo with Bangs
If you are looking for shorter mother of the bride updos, try this style that offers an illusion of long, voluminous curls pinned at the crown. This is a fabulous ensemble with bangs or without.
#17: Platinum Mother of the Bride
Blondes sometimes have more fun – especially at their son or daughter’s wedding! Live it up with this cute and sassy hairstyle that will show off your blonde locks and hold them together on the dance floor.
#18: Curly messy updo for fine hair
Undoubtedly one of the prettiest updos, the curly, messy variant makes an impression whether you’re in your 40’s, 50’s or over 60’s. Spice them up with fashionable and adorable hair accessories.
#19: Curly Bun for the Mother of the Bride
Curly bun hairstyles offer a quirky way to wear your hair on your daughter’s special wedding day. This updo has a little fullness for added height and subtle side parts to balance the front. It’s a great way to show off your neck, especially if your dress has a low back.
#20: Loose updo with swept curls
Effortless and elegant mother of the bride hairstyles are easy to choose and achieve when you have an experienced stylist on hand. Here’s a nice idea to consider. The hair has been curled and braided to create the exquisite loose updo.
#21: Cute formal half updo for thick medium hair
A cute formal half up half down hairstyle is alluring if you have thick or medium hair. Tease the crown and pull back the side parts, overlapping and pinning. This easy and eye-catching updo is simple but with panache.
#22: Messy Woven Updo for the Mother of the Bride
The messy woven updo works better on medium thick curls as very thick hair can prove difficult to manage. Fine hair is also a marvel with this style if you don’t mind a thinner look. Make sure to let some pieces hang loosely around the front to flatter and frame your face.
#23: Curly French Roll Updo
Medium length hair is easily pulled back into an elegant updo that showcases the nape of the neck. Modern hairstyles for the mother of the groom are updated classics, like the French updo. The slightly messy bouffant adds height and a touch of sophistication.
#24: Twisted and pinned half up hairstyle
Charming and charismatic, this twisted and pinned up hairstyle puts a contemporary spin on the traditional half up half down look. It has been carefully assembled to showcase the polished half section and then a beautiful contrast with the tousled, free-flowing bottom part.
#25: Curly updo for shorter hair
If you are the mother of the bride, you might be looking for a simple updo that is easy to style at home. Take advantage of your naturally wavy hair to create one of these short hairstyles. On the big day, sweep your hair into a quick updo and let your curls do the rest.
#26: Blonde and bubbly
Weddings are a celebration, so have fun with your look! Pump up the volume in your medium hair with loose, messy curls that are formal but not too stuffy. This look is an ideal option for a beach wedding.
#27: Big bun with messy curls
Here is a pretty hairstyle for the mother of the groom. The big bun with messy curls does not require very long hair. The trick is to add volume at the roots by backcombing before curling your entire head and putting the updo together. You can take the bun as high or low as you like to get the effect you want.
#28: Beautiful bouffant updo for long hair
This elegant updo is ideal for long hair. The bouffant is constructed to add a softer look and height to the front view. The sides and bottom are wrapped and pinned in an urban and seductive updo – an all around perfect style!
#29: Gorgeous braided updo for gray hair
As the mother of the groom, you probably want a stylish updo that is elegant and easy to put together, although it can look quite complicated. If you are blessed with long gray hair, use it to your advantage by styling a gorgeous low updo with fancy twists for long hair.
#30: Simple cute gray half updo
The simple half updo is one of the easiest mother of the bride hairstyles that you can do without any help, whether you have short or long hair. Develop just a slight fullness by backcombing the top section of hair and then pinning it loosely with glittery pins. Voila!
#31: Relaxed and regal
If you prefer a no-fuss lifestyle, you probably also prefer more relaxed hairstyles with carefree curls for very special occasions like your daughter’s wedding. Vibrant, effortless looking hair is totally mainstream. Consider a half up style with a delicate braid and touchable curls. The mother of the bride’s hair shouldn’t look too elaborate. Pretty and modern? Definitive!
#32: Sleek French Knot with Curls
Show off your vibrant hair color with a sleek and polished hairstyle. Combine a classic French twist with cute curls for a stylish mother of the bride hairstyle that won’t overwhelm or clash with your outfit.
#33: Demanding mother of the bride
Go vintage with this interwoven look reminiscent of turn-of-the-century hairstyles. These work best with longer hair, but a shorter or layered cut can also be manipulated into this elegant updo.
#34: Sleek Updo with Looped Bun
A high bouffant always adds a regal flair to updos for the mother of the bride. Curly curls at the back and a sleek front with bangs create a simple and elegant shape that’s great for an afternoon wedding.
#35: Creative and Curly
Mother of the bride updos can sometimes look overly complicated. Instead, keep it simple and opt for soft curls with hair half up. You can pin the hair and loop it through, or twist and pin sections over the hair tie to keep it from looking too high profile.
#36: Mermaid inspired
If you are a mom with long hair, you will be glad to know that there are many options for those who do not like their hair up for special occasions. Some wedding hairstyles for long hair simply involve pin curls or a small to medium flat iron. Use a few bobby pins to gather your hair back – this will give your tresses the look of cascading curls. Don’t forget hairspray.
#37: Delicate curly updo
Redhead moms can be strong personalities—but hair can still look muted and classy. To pull off this wedding hair look, pull hair into a low ponytail and curl individual sections. Let the curls curl up and then pin them towards the nape of your neck at their natural curve. You’ll look fiery on the big day, but also kind and supportive.
#38: Curly blonde updo for the mother of the bride
This curly blonde mother of the bride updo is especially effective when done on thick, luscious tresses. It’s all about utilizing the hair’s natural volume to create a feminine, romantic ensemble with movement. Set the style in place with a strong-hold hairspray.
#39: Pompadour Bun
Feel like a pop star with this youthful style that’s great for medium to longer hair. The thicker your hair, the chunkier the twists will be.
#40: Simplified waterfall braid
Waterfall braids are all over social media and they’re really pretty – but they can also be a little tricky. Instead of agonizing over a complicated hairstyle, opt for this simplified version that’s just as beautiful. After all, you have many other things on your to-do list, right?
#41: Tousled Asymmetrical Updo
This relaxed updo is one of the prettiest and most glamorous mother-of-the-groom hairstyles in our list. Due to its simple and understated nature, it’s perfect for balancing a sparkling statement dress or loud accessories.
#42: Twist, curl and pin
Mother of the bride hairstyles can look very different – this is another example of a fancy updo that looks good at any age. The side twists slim the face and soften the look of the hair pulled back.
#43: Chic and sophisticated chignon
Chignons are timeless and elegant, making them the perfect addition to any wedding outfit. The best part is that they work well with many different hair types, from thin and straight to thick and wavy. That’s why this look is universally flattering.
#44: Short and cute style
This hairstyle for the mother of the bride is gorgeous and works for any hair length – although it looks best on shoulder-length hair. Don’t forget to leave some loose, curled strands out to soften the face and give you a chic feel!

A formal evening wedding calls for a more serious, sophisticated hairstyle. Look no further than this updo with a jeweled pin.

#50: Messy Bun for shorter hair
Shoulder-length hair can sometimes look short and thin when pulled into a tight, low bun. If you want a fuller looking updo, have your tresses backcombed and placed in loose coils to create a bun-like look for an appealing mother of the bride hairstyle. Braided accents also add texture to thin strands.

How do you hide the headband on a fascinator?
Typically, headband-based fascinators are small enough to discreetly attach to the head, which you can wear by first pulling the hair away from the face. To hide the headband wire, your hair can be placed over the headband when you are styling it.
76 Best Race day hair ideas
Fascinators have grown in popularity over the years, and while there are many casual styles to choose from, it helps to know how to practice proper etiquette when wearing them.
How fascinators are worn
Women can wear fascinators in many ways, simply by attaching the clip or headband to the head, but usually it is worn attached to the side or front of the head. While you can wear a fascinator on either the right or left side of your head, traditionally a fascinator is worn on the right side of your face. Fascinators arguably look best when worn just above the eyebrow. Want a hat with a veil attachment but not sure how to wear a mesh fascinator? A fascinator with a net or a veil attachment can simply be worn over the eye.
You can also wear a fascinator as a tiara or at the back of your head if your hair is pinned up or in a curly or chignon style.
The best ways to style a fascinator
Here are some basic guidelines to keep in mind when wearing a fascinator:
Keep the fascinator in proportion to your head, hairstyle and body. For example, try avoiding dainty fascinators if you have long hair and complement it with a larger fascinator instead.
Keep a simple hairstyle so that it doesn’t distract from the fascinator. Consider something like a slicked back hairstyle or a simple ponytail.
Stay classy and stylish. You don’t have to wear a giant peacock feather to get noticed. Instead, keep it simple but appealing.
How to wear a fascinator hat with a comb
There are specific ways to properly wear a comb-based fascinator, including:
Comb or backcomb the hair on the side of the head where you will wear the fascinator, giving it a better base to grip.
Gently slide the comb in the opposite direction before sliding it into place, which will pick up more hair and weave it between the comb’s teeth for a better hold.
Use hairspray to further enhance the fascinator’s hold, but be careful not to spray directly onto the fascinator.
Use a few bobby pins to hold the comb firmly in place.
How to wear a fascinator with a headband
Typically, headband-based fascinators are small enough to attach discreetly to the head, which you can wear by first pulling your hair out of your face. To hide the bail wire, you can drape your hair over the bail when styling.
How to wear fascinators with elastic bands
If a fascinator uses an elastic band, make sure you position it behind your head. You can put the elastic either around the neck or behind the ears, but always avoid wearing it under the chin. You might want to consider using a bobby pin to help secure it.
How to attach a fascinator to your hair
The way you attach a fascinator to your hair depends on the fascinator style. Regardless of whether you wear a fascinator with a headband or a fascinator with a comb, one thing applies in general: freshly washed hair is not as easy to style with a fascinator as day-old hair. This is because your day-old hair contains natural oils that help hold your hairstyle in place. Therefore, depending on your hair type, it is important that you wash your hair 1-3 days before the day you need to wear your fascinator hat. Using a texturizing spray or hairspray can also help keep your fascinator in place.
How to choose a fascinator based on your hairstyle
For best results, consult your hairstylist or book a styling appointment with a hairstylist experienced in fascinator hairstyles. However, there is nothing to say that you cannot achieve a beautifully styled look yourself.
If you plan to wear your hair down and create a voluminous look, a larger fascinator will look best. If you wear your hair loosely up, a medium sized fascinator will work better and look more balanced. If you want to wear a tight updo or if you have short hair, a smaller fascinator is a great option as it will keep your hat from overwhelming the rest of your look.
Finally, it is important to consider your hair color. If you have darker hair, opt for a lighter colored fascinator and vice versa. This will ensure that your fascinator will “pop” and not blend into your hair.
Fascinator Etiquette
Fascinators have several rules for wearing them. First, it’s important to remember that others cannot see through the fascinator, which means you want to make sure you’re not blocking anyone’s view if you’re wearing it to an event. Avoid wearing fascinators at all stadium-style events, including movie theaters and symphonies.
If you are taller than your companion, you can also wear a shorter fascinator.

Do hat and shoes have to match?
Shoes and handbags: Shoes, bag and hat do not need to all match as long as your outfit coordinates as a whole then all three can be different colours if you wish. Often we recommend two items in a colour is enough to coordinate, again, you can over match!
76 Best Race day hair ideas
Where to start High street or designer? Hat or fascinator? What color to wear considering the color has probably already been chosen for the bridesmaids and maybe the other mother? Which shoes? High heels for extra height or a classic pump with a lower heel? How important is the comfort of your shoes to you so that you can wear your shoes all day and on the dance floor in the evening? Which dress? One that covers the upper arms and feels like “you”. Not only how to get that hat/dress/shoe combo, but also how to create a complete outfit that you can be proud to wear to your son or daughter’s wedding.
With so many things to think about and so far removed from what you might carry in your daily life, it can be a headache not knowing where to start! At Beverley Edmondson Millinery we have a wealth of experience with many mothers of the bride and mothers of the groom”; from extroverted and self-confident to very shy and not wanting to stand out from the crowd; stepmothers who are good-looking but don’t want to “outdo” the bride and groom’s parents; for those who have never worn a hat before and need that little boost to make them feel comfortable with their chosen headpiece.
Below we’ve summarized all our advice and ethos in simple steps to ensure you get the perfect outfit and look for the big day! There is no right or wrong when it comes to dressing. The most important thing is that you stay true to yourself and that you feel like you on the big day. Don’t think you have to wear something just because someone else tells you when it really isn’t for you… Friends can offer great advice on such occasions, but always be aware when they are imposing their taste on you and you and don’t consider your tastes. The most important thing is to feel comfortable!
hat or dress first? Again, there is no right or wrong place to start. However, if you have an awkward body shape or particularly want a statement or patterned dress, it may be best to buy the dress first so your hat can be designed to complement the outfit. Just make sure you give yourself plenty of time – a clumsy colored dress or an overly flashy dress will severely limit your options for off the shelf headwear. However, accessories can make an outfit, so sometimes the simplest dress with a statement hat, the right shoes and the right bag can say more than a patterned dress. Too much going on can sometimes be distracting.
Color Matching: There’s such a thing as over-matching! Sometimes you have to decide whether you want your hat or dress to be your statement, as too much of either can be a recipe for disaster. Color matching the exact same tone for your hat, dress, bag, and shoes can be overkill, and while it all goes together perfectly, it can make an otherwise interesting outfit seem rather dull and boring. Even if you are looking for a completely monochromatic look, the different materials of your dress, hat and shoes will never be exactly the same as they are made of completely different fiber compositions and all color differently. An accent color can be beautiful, or if you’re not so bold, simply different shades of the same color add depth, vibrancy, and interest to an outfit.
Hat Styles: There are many shapes and styles to suit all face shapes, builds and personalities. At Beverley Edmondson Millinery we don’t believe very much in the “rules” that hats shouldn’t be wider than your shoulders and you should wear a round hat with a round face. Most hats will fit anyone, as long as you wear the hat, stand up straight, shoulders back, put on a smile, and believe you can wear the hat! Have you ever wondered why some people look great in all hats? That’s because they rely on wearing hats.
With that said, not everyone is going to be comfortable all the time, so it’s our job to find you a style that makes you smile, stand tall, and feel confident. Some things to keep in mind are: if you are short, a brim or trim that swings up to give you the illusion of height will prevent you from getting lost under a hat, while if you are tall, something wider can be more flattering. On the wedding day, you are expected to greet and kiss the guests. So consider whether you need something that sits on one side so you can offer an available cheek to kiss, or would you appreciate a brim that makes it difficult for you to reach out to people and keep them at a distance!
If you keep your hat on during meals, will you prevent anyone by your side from joining in the conversation, or will you end up tickling their face with a feather? In general, we don’t think these things are necessarily a bad thing. At the end of the day, if someone else knocks on your hat, at least that’s a topic of conversation!
Shoes and handbags: Shoes, bag and hat don’t all have to match, as long as your outfit harmonizes as a whole, all three can be different colors if desired. Often we recommend that two items in one color are enough to coordinate, again you can match one on top of the other! Bags are often left on a bench or under a table, so when a tint color works just as well, it’s worth considering how much attention you need to pay to the exact color. If the wedding is at your home or at a hotel you’re staying at, do you really need a bag?
However, bags can be lovely props when photos are being taken, or give you something to do with your hands when you’re nervous and fidgety, and store tissues for those tearful moments. Finding a shoe in the right colour, style and fit can be a nightmare as many people settle for two of the three.
Here at Beverly Edmondson Millinery we offer the Rainbow Club shoe and bag dyeing service. Not only is there a wide range of styles, from low heels to high heels with platforms, peep toes, lace and/or glitter detailing and optional shoe clips, Rainbow Club is also known for their comfortable fit. In the five years we’ve stocked them, we’ve never had negative feedback on the comfort of this brand of shoes…even with the highest heels! Padded on the inside, both on the sides and on the sole, they sometimes feel like you’re putting your feet in a pair of slippers!
Not only that, they can literally be dyed any color under the sun! You are not limited by a color chart, just bring us a fabric swatch of the color you want, or we can supply a color from the hat we make and we’ll do the rest for you! We also stock heel stops to keep you from sinking into the grass and wobbling on uneven surfaces, and heel cuffs to protect against abrasion.
Classic or modern? There is no right or wrong here, because fashions can change, but they also come back. Be yourself and feel good. A timeless look will always be classy and stylish, but it can prevent you from having fun with your outfit. Going for something very contemporary can go out of style…think ’80s shoulder pads and Princess Diana’s wedding dress. But that doesn’t mean it’s wrong; The event is happening at a specific time, so why not dress for the time? As I always say… in 20 years what would you like to see in that photo on the mantelpiece? At the end of the day, this will be the only lasting part of what you choose to wear, other than the wonderful memories of the wedding day itself.
Places we recommend looking for your clothes are Phase Eight, Hobbs, Jacques Vert and LK Bennett; All high street but carefully selected and these brands offer a wide range of fits and styles at reasonable prices. Alternatively, Suzannah Fashion, Caroline Charles and Belulah are high end brands but known for their great cuts and finishes with stores in London and online. More local and for something a little different or very traditional mother of the bride outfits and excellent customer service we recommend a visit to Serendipity Fashions near Guildford, Melita of Cobham, Mulberry Silks in Farnham and Experience in Fleet. And if you’re shopping online, we love Bombshell and Gina Baconni.
For shoes, LK Bennett and Hobbs have a great selection, as does the Shoe Hall at the House of Fraser. But if you’re looking for colour, style and comfort all rolled into one, don’t forget we offer the Rainbow Club shoe and dyeing service in store.
How long do you keep a hat on? The tradition is that everyone should keep their hats on until the mother of the bride takes hers off… so if you’re the mother of the bride, do what you will! It’s really to each his own. We strive to make all of our hats, hatters and fascinators as comfortable as possible (the bigger and heavier the style, the harder this is as we always struggle with gravity!).
So if you want to leave your hat on well into the night, do it! If it’s a spring wedding, hats can be designed to be worn with a coat so they’re perfect for the ceremony and photos outside, but may not work if you’re inside at the reception and the coat is removed. In these situations we can make a small fascinator that complements your outfit, is easy to wear and continues your desired look into the evening. Ultimately, it’s up to you, but no one will be angry if you take off your hat after the ceremony, after breakfast, or just before bed!
Why not take the opportunity to wear a hat or fascinator and keep it on for as long as possible! Don’t worry, etiquette says women should only wear hats indoors before 6pm and men should never wear hats indoors!
Hats don’t suit me: how often do we hear that? Probably every day and several times! As we get to know our customers, we often find that they actually match hats. Many are just a little afraid of them, having never worn one; they think they look like their mother in a hat, the only connection to hats is an old-school hat, or they’ve only ever tried on hats in department stores with a mass-market collection without an assistant to help you. Let me assure you that wedding costume jewelry is a whole different ball game than the above.
Choosing your hat should be an exciting experience, not a daunting one. We are here to guide and advise you on hats, to dress you gently and give you the confidence to feel amazing in them. Funnily enough, most people who walk into the store and say hats don’t go with them always walk out with a hat… As we like to say, wearing a hat is all about attitude. “It’s what’s in your head, not what’s on your head” is what puts you off wearing hats. That’s what the team and I are here for. We truly believe that any hat can suit anyone if they have the right attitude to wear it. With shoulders pulled back, a smile and the right position, you’ll be amazed at what suddenly looks great on you if you just give herding a chance!

All our appointments are free and without obligation, so make the most of this service. It is designed to allow us to provide you with the best customer service and experience that we can and to ensure you have the time and expertise so that we can make you the best hat or headgear we can. We recommend that you bring everything you already have for your outfit with you to the consultation. This is to avoid any doubt as to how well it fits styles and shapes.
This should include dress, jacket, jewellery, purse, sling, shoes etc. If you don’t already have some of these items, that’s fine. But if you have already bought them, we strongly advise you to bring them with you so that we can style the hat to perfection without having to guess how it would go with the other elements of your outfit! During the consultation we will go through the shapes and styles, narrowing down using your input and our expertise, from there we will work on colors and trimmings until you are happy with everything from the head fit to the final quote.
For made to order hats and fascinators we ask for a minimum lead time of 6 weeks but where possible longer lead times are appreciated and will allow you to have your piece ready and safe at home well in advance of the event. All of the hats in the boutique can be bought off the shelf and taken away immediately, although many pieces can be tweaked and edited in the shop or given a secondary color at short notice to make them work for you if there isn’t enough lead time for custom orders. So don’t panic if time is short!
Once your hat is ready we invite you back to the store to try it on and make sure you are happy with everything. Once you are satisfied you can take it away, otherwise any changes or adjustments will be made until you are completely satisfied with your order.
Don’t forget that hats are a topic of conversation! People will remember your hat or headpiece over any dress or your shoes for years, as they are the crowning but often underappreciated part of an outfit. When the wedding night turns into a party, everyone will want to try on your hat… dresses and shoes will never get the same attention! Hats complete an outfit and encourage you to stand tall and improve your posture, which in turn leads to better photos. There are too few ways to wear hats these days, so seize the opportunity and make the most of it! Have fun creating your special outfit! It should be a fun and relaxed experience, no stress! Plan early, book an appointment and let us take care of your worries!

Why do people wear fascinators to the races?
“It became a way for a lady to display her status and fashionability, and in the days when women really where chattels of men, it was a way for men to display their wealth — so they would make sure their lady was dressed in the finest, most tasteful and the latest of fashions.”

Ever wondered why wearing hats and fascinators to the races is a thing?
“Racing has been called the sport of kings for a reason. It’s an expensive sport, so people who could afford to keep a stable, look after horses and pay the people who ride them had a lot of money,” said Melbourne-based hatter Richard Nylon.
“Money goes with prestige, with precision comes fashion, and back then fashion went with hats.
“It became a way for a lady to show off her status and fashion, and in the days when women were really owned by men, it was a way for men to show off their wealth – so they could make sure their lady.” dressed was the finest, most tasteful, and the latest fashion.”

Fast forward to now and it’s still a firm tradition on the racing scene and one that needs to be honored. Kate Waterhouse, racer queen, media personality and Sydney Spring Carnival ambassador agrees.
“Wearing headgear on race day is a really important tradition. The race is a unique occasion and there aren’t many other places to wear a hat. That doesn’t mean you have to wear a massive big hat if you don’t feel comfortable, there are many different alternatives – but we do have to honor a tradition that goes back years and years ago when they wore top hats and tails.”
“My mother [Gai Waterhouse] has been getting ready for races every Saturday since I was very young, before I can remember. When she was getting ready I always played dress up. She would leave the races and I would be left with this big pile of dresses and gloves and hats and headgear and lipstick. I thought it was my personal wardrobe!” recalls Waterhouse.
So what’s in fashion this racing season? We asked Nylon who knows his headgear.
“The trends are towards headdresses, it’s like taking a necklace and putting it on your head – it’s a young trend and we’ve seen it a lot in the last season. There is also a big trend in boat hats – very simple looking hats with a simple shape that is very flattering. We also still see the more structured, traditional pieces that go quite high, and a lot of veil too.”

“I wish for the return of extravagance in headgear. As a milliner, I naturally wish for more statement pieces and hats. But at the end of the day, you have to be comfortable in what you wear,” says Nylon.
Not sure where to start? Invest in a versatile piece.
“When investing in a hat, think about the color of your hair. If you wear a dark hat and have dark hair, it will get lost in photos and it can look like part of your hair – so try to have some contrast. If you’re new to headwear, try a nice piece on a headband — these pieces aren’t hard to wear,” Nylon said.
Last but not least, Nylon offers some great advice when it comes to caring for your new purchase.
“Hats should be kept in boxes that do not rest on the brim but are opened open on the crown, with tissue paper supporting the brim underneath. Fascinators should also be placed on tissue paper. Silk, feathers and materials are tasty for moths, so be careful.”

Should fascinator match dress or shoes?

Do you have to dress up for the races?
Many people choose to dress up for a day at the races and, although often not mandatory, it is considered to be part of the raceday experience.
76 Best Race day hair ideas
Many people choose to dress up for a day at the races and while this is often not mandatory it is considered part of the race day experience. The Racing Post has compiled a list of everything you need to know when deciding what to wear to the races.
gentleman
While far from mandatory in all enclosures, smart attire is the accepted dress code for race-goers. Sneakers and shorts are widely considered unacceptable, although they are not prohibited in some enclosures or at some meetings.
Classic men’s flat racing attire is a collared shirt with pants and smart shoes. Some choose to finish off the look with a tie and blazer, but that’s a personal preference and to some extent dictated by the weather.
Jumps meetings tend to adapt to the weather, as opposed to a strict dress code, as most large meetings take place during the winter months. Wearing tweed is an old tradition among jump fans, but that’s just personal preference.
Also when deciding what to wear to the Cheltenham Festival it is best to dress appropriately for the weather unless you are lucky enough to be a corporate guest in which case a suit may be more appropriate.
ladies
Many ladies attending flat race meetings during the summer associate a day at the races with a day where they can dress up in all their glitz and glamour, although in many areas this is not mandatory. Some of the more prestigious meetings and the ever-increasing number of women-specific days put fashion in the spotlight, while some meetings offer competitions for the best-dressed racegoers.
As with men, weather-appropriate clothing applies here in winter, heels are not advisable in the expected wet conditions.
Royal Ascot – a special occasion
Royal Ascot is a prestigious five-day gathering in June steeped in history and one of its most traditional elements is the dress code. The racecourse imposes strict dress codes, failure to comply with which may result in denial of entry.
For example, the Royal Enclosure requires all gentlemen to wear a three-piece morning suit and top hat at all times. Ladies must wear a hat or head covering at all times and adhere to an extensive list of restrictions on their outfits. Ascot also recently introduced a rule that all gentlemen should wear socks.
The golden rule
Full details of all dress codes can be found on the individual racecourse websites, most of which give great advice on what to wear for your day at the races.

What Headpiece to Wear with Your Dress at The Races
From wide brimmed hats to fascinators and headbands, there are a plethora of choices when it comes to choosing the perfect headwear to wear with your dress for the races.
Choose a size and style that suits both the occasion and your face shape, and try on as many as possible to get the best idea of what complements your look.
Wide brimmed hats look best in bright colors, while a fascinator can match your outfit for a more cohesive overall look.
Always remember to style your hair under your chosen hat and check the back before going to your event.
Whether you’ve already chosen your dress for a horse race or are just beginning your search, headwear for such an occasion can make or break an outfit.
Go too small and it’s not significant enough, go too big and it’s a little too over the top.
Choosing a chic hat or headpiece completes a formal race day outfit with the perfect added touch of glamour.
Is headgear always suitable for the races?
It’s always appropriate to rock a dressy headpiece or horse racing hat to elevate your outfit.
However, it is not always absolutely necessary.
Depending on your individual event, check the dress code to determine if a hat is part of the dress code.
If not, a lady usually doesn’t have many occasions to wear a hat to a formal event. So if you can, why not?
What are different types of hats/headgear?
If you have decided to complement your look with a formal headpiece, you need to consider the different types of headpieces available.
You should also think about how they would suit you, your face shape, your chosen outfit and the occasion itself.
Each event has different levels of formality and it is always better to be overdressed than underdressed at horse racing.
full hat
From small and chic to an ultra-glamorous wide-brimmed hat reminiscent of the French Rivera, full hats are an elegant way to complement your race-day outfit.
Wearing a full hat with a slightly asymmetrical tilt is the most flattering way to solidify the look.
But your hair should still be fully styled underneath.
Use additional products to avoid “hat hair” if you decide to take the hat off halfway through the event.
fascinator
The fascinator is a popular alternative to a full hat.
Though considered dated by some, it’s still an incredibly stylish way to add a touch of color or detail to a formal outfit.
A fascinator is much lighter than a full hat and is worn with either a narrow headband or a sliding comb.
The fascinator is often easier to wear throughout the day and should be placed on the same side as your parting.
Always remember to check your looks from the back once you are secured.
Top tip: if applying it with a comb, comb under the hair where you want to wear your fascinator.
This ensures there is as much texture as possible for added security in placement.
headband
When you think of headbands, clear the image of preschool and pink satin headbands with braids.
But if you don’t want to wear a flashy hat or fascinator, this is the perfect headwear for you.
For a formal day at the races, a chic and elegant headband can be the best solution.
Choose a headband with exquisite, intricate details or floral creations with a pop of color.
So don’t neglect this style as if chosen well it can look just as luxurious as any larger hat.
straw hat
When it comes to straw hats, few styles are formal and appropriate enough to take to the races.
Think traditional Victorian style with floral detailing and ribbons rather than a trilby or fedora style hat.
This is a slightly more casual way to complement your race day outfit, but can work if you choose to dress up.
Here’s how to coordinate it with your dress
Don’t get overwhelmed by the task of perfectly matching your headgear with your racing attire.
Coordination is often more elegant than a direct match.
So allow yourself to look at different shades within the same color palette.
Or, for a statement look, opt for something completely different.
The perfect match between hat and dress comes with balance.
You want your dress and accessories to coordinate rather than compete for attention.
So, if your dress is narrow, opt for a wide hat.
However, if your dress is voluminous and A-line, choose a smaller, more understated headpiece.
If you have already bought your dress
Wherever you buy your race day headwear, take your dress or full outfit with you.
The hat shop won’t mind helping you with color coordination.
Remembering shades can even help you avoid crucial mistakes.
If you haven’t bought your dress yet
If you have yet to choose your dress, but the hat is an essential part of your aspired look, don’t be afraid to choose the hat first.
This can actually help you pinpoint the dress you are looking for.
This will also ensure that the hat is the statement piece of your overall race day look.
Which combinations work best?
When it comes to finding the perfect dress and hat or headpiece combo, the most important thing is to do your research.
Start narrowing down the types of style combinations you like using online platforms like Pinterest.
That way it feels a little less overwhelming when shopping.
In terms of style and color combinations, the world is your oyster.
There are a few style tips you should stick to for a dressy look, but don’t be afraid to try something different if a hat appeals to you.
Contrasting colors work best for wide-brimmed hats.
So opt for a striking shade in a color that is quite different from your choice of dress.
Smaller pieces and fascinators can go together if you like a more cohesive overall look.
However, remember to always match exactly or find a fairly different shade in your chosen color.
Matches that don’t quite hit the mark can spoil a view.
If you have chosen a black dress, they look great with a touch of color.
So don’t be afraid to go big and choose from lime green or even bright coral or yellow.
Look at your hair
When choosing the perfect color combination for your dresses and hats, remember to consider your hair color as well.
Redheads go well with neutrals and earth tones. like olive green and soft beige.
Blondes look great in lighter colors; coral and lime as well as navy.
Brunettes are complemented by bright, but deep and rich jewel tones, such as emerald or ruby.
How to wear the hat
Wearing a hat or headband is a personal styling choice and you’ll know how you feel when you start trying them on.
Some styles sweep across the face while others are pinned further back.
Make sure you take the time to work out your own face shape to ensure your accessory complements both your dress and your face.
Angular faces are complemented by softer hats with feather or veil detailing, and larger and more rounded faces suit asymmetrically styled hats.
Remember that placement is also important.
Where you don’t want your hat sitting awkwardly on your head, you don’t want it in front of your eyes either.
Find the perfect position with any sloped part of the hat a thumb’s breadth above your eyebrow.
Think about your hair
When you’ve spent weeks or even months picking the perfect hat or fascinator for your race day outfit, it can be easy to forget about the hair that will be sitting underneath your accessory.
However, it’s still important to properly prep your hair for a hat to ensure it doesn’t look like a last-minute addition to your look.
A thorough blow dry will give you the volume you need at the roots, and a soft, ruffled updo will complement almost any headwear style.
Remember to use a little extra product, especially with a fascinator, to ensure it stays in place all day.
Also, remember to take the time to check the back of your hair in the mirror and make sure the look you’re going to look looks just as good in the back as it does in the front.
Avoid sunglasses
While sometimes unavoidable, the best way to avoid sunglasses is to wear a conspicuous hat or fascinator.
Too many accessories can ruin an outfit.
A feathered headpiece paired with curly hair and a made-up face, a pair of sunglasses on this look can take a step too far when it comes to style.
Wearing a hat or headgear for a day at horse racing should be fun and a great way to show off your creative and stylish side.
Don’t stress too much about matching your outfit.
Instead, think about how you can complement and enhance your overall look.
The most important thing is to take your time making the decision so you don’t go wrong.
Once you know you’re planning an outfit for race day, think hats, hats, hats and you’ll have plenty of time to choose the perfect accessory.
