“It’s well known that when you eat something sweet like a brownie, your blood sugar spikes, so nobody’s surprised when that happens,” said Dr. Stephen Devries, cardiologist and executive director of the Gaples Institute. “However, many patients are unaware that starchy foods, many of which are devoid of a hint of sweetness, can push blood sugar levels even higher.”

Donuts are loaded with added sugar and fat — no one considers them a healthy choice. But sometimes well-intentioned food substitutes can have unintended consequences.

“Patients who have cause for concern about their blood sugar typically understand that sugary foods like donuts are poor choices,” said Dr. devries “To lower their sugar, they might swap out a donut for breakfast for something less sweet, like a bagel. But what many patients don’t realize is that starchy foods can spike blood sugar even more than sweet foods.”

The explanation is that starch is converted into glucose by the body. Because the bagel has a greater carbohydrate mass than the donut, it results in a higher release of glucose into the bloodstream, known as “glycemic load.”

With a quick Pinterest search, dozens of sugar scrub variations also became available almost immediately. With so many recipes and variations, here is some information on why sugar and oil are not only good for baking but also good for your skin.

Here are some more tips to help you avoid low blood sugar:

Eat all your meals and snacks on time and try not to skip any.

Take the right amount of insulin.

If you’re exercising longer or harder than usual, have an extra snack.

Don’t take a hot bath or shower right after an insulin shot.

Stick to your diabetes management plan.

Check your blood sugar levels regularly so you can determine if your blood sugar levels are too low and your treatment plan needs to be adjusted.

Always carry something containing sugar and take it with you immediately if you have symptoms. Don’t wait for the symptoms to go away – they can get worse!
