Working in the nursing field means constantly updating your skills and adapting your practice to best serve the people you support.
All caregivers must work in a person-centred manner to meet the needs and wants of the people they serve, which begins with identifying their needs and wants before tailoring your practice to meet their needs.
For example, if a person prefers to communicate using Makaton Sign Language, you would need to learn Makaton yourself in order to communicate with them effectively. This can be formal training organized by an external agency or in-house by your employer, or even informal on-the-job training with the individual and other caregivers.
You may need training to use equipment that is specific to the person.
If you have previously worked with people with severe learning disabilities where you had to do everything for them including grooming, bathing, feeding, etc., and then start working with someone who needs very little support, you may find it difficult to adjust at first . However, it would be important to change your practice to allow the latter person to maintain their independence.
