Alfalfa feeder for deer
We made 4 alfalfa bale feeders by welding two 55 gallon drums together, leaving a lid latch on top…and welding a 4″x4″ welded wire cage on the bottom. The wire cage was about 18 to 20 inches high. Leg supports for 4-foot legs were bolted on and adjusted to a height where the deer could easily pull alfalfa out of the cage. You could drop in a few squares from a bale from the top and then roughly shake the remaining squares over it. The feeders hold exactly 2 bales. Easy to fill from a tailgate or truck tool box. When we first used them we only dumped 2 compressed bales in, but the weight compressed the bales even more and it was too hard for the deer to pull the alfalfa out…hence the rough shaking of the squares. I had some pictures of it…but I think it’s on an old hard drive. The deer… mostly armpits, would easily eat a little over a bale a week.

The deer did well this year with my automatic hay feeder. In fact, they’ve hit it harder this year than they have in the last 2 years. The bales lasted 5-7 days! I don’t break it up and just put the whole bale in the bin. (I don’t even pull the bale wire out!) If it was loose they would kill it in less than 2 days!
I made my keg with a smaller leg diameter so I could slide it to the side, pull the lid, slide the bale in and then set it back up. All with one person and my feet never leave the ground. My back thanks me! Attached images
