How to use a Kindle without an Amazon account

The Amazon Kindle was one of those devices that completely changed the way we live. Paper books became an endangered species and other manufacturers rushed to produce copies of the Kindle to take part in the campaign. If you own one, did you know you can use a Kindle without tying it to your Amazon account?

Amazon sells Kindle as a loss leader. This means they take the upfront cost of the device in hopes of getting it back, and then something towards selling books, magazines and other media that you want to use on it. This is why Kindle is so insistent that you register your Amazon account when you first start the device. It wants you to be able to shop whenever you want because this is where Amazon makes the real money.

However, you don’t have to do this if you don’t want to. It’s your device, use it your way.

Use a Kindle without registering an Amazon account

Although it’s not obvious, you can access your Kindle without linking it to your Amazon account or creating a new one. However, it limits the usefulness of the Kindle. You can’t buy books or magazines or use many of the free things that Amazon is happy to give away. You also can’t use collections. However, you can use it as a standalone e-reader.

By installing Caliber on your Kindle, you can transfer books and media to it from your computer and use it as a simple tablet.

When you start your Kindle for the first time, leave Wi-Fi off or don’t connect it to your Wi-Fi network. Instead of having to register with Amazon or create a new account, you have the option to register later. You cannot register your Kindle with this option.

As long as you can ignore the prompts to register and install an eBook reader, you can use the Kindle as much as you like.

Some recent Kindle versions force you to connect to Wi-Fi. Option one is to press the X in the corner of the WiFi setup screen to generate a “set up later” option. Select this option to use your Kindle without registering it.

Option two is to choose to create a new Amazon account and you should see a “Set Up Later” option on the bottom left of the next screen. Select that and you are in the same place.

Deregister your Kindle from your Amazon account

If you have already registered your Kindle, you can deregister it again if necessary. It will limit its functionality to being an eBook reader, but you can still read with it. Again, you can’t use collections, buy books or media from Amazon, or download their freebies.

Open your Kindle and select Settings. Select My Account and then Sign out. Confirm your choice in the pop-up menu.

You will be signed out of your Amazon account and will have to use third party apps to read books and do everything else you do on your Kindle.

This page on Stack Exchange lists a number of entries, including logs, collected from the Kindle when connected to WiFi. For the most part, the data looks harmless and anonymized. However, some things were identifiable.

This page at Investopedia lists some of the many ways Amazon tracks you, including your Kindle usage. Again, this is mostly about business and your reading habits and not anything serious.

I can assume Amazon tracks your purchases, reading habits, time spent on the Kindle, and time spent reading specific books or magazines. This all feeds into its recommendation engine and helps it sell you more stuff. Remember, Kindle is a losing leader and Amazon wants their coin.

Some users have said that Amazon tracks books not purchased from its platform and sideloaded using Caliber or another eBook reading app. I think that’s probably true too. Can I transfer media to the Kindle Fire using Amazon’s Cloud Drive service?

Yes, although the integration isn’t as tight as it could be. At launch, any music you upload to your personal Cloud Drive account is available to stream or download directly from the Kindle Fire’s Music menu. The same level of integration hasn’t been available for videos, documents, or photos yet (although that may have changed by the time you’re reading this).

Either way, you can point the Kindle’s browser to the Cloud Drive site and access your content that way. Using this technique, we successfully transferred a 1GB MPEG-4 movie file from a laptop to our Cloud Drive account and back to the Kindle Fire.

Does the Android Marketplace work through the Kindle browser or is it completely blocked?

Seems sturdy enough to us, especially considering there are so few ports that are in danger of being glued. The bigger problem is that there are no measures (yet) you can take to disable the web browser. With iPad, Apple has gone to great lengths to allow parents and teachers to lock down browsing, purchase and age-restricted content. The Kindle Fire doesn’t share these same controls yet.

Will there be either a larger 10 inch version or a 3G version?

There are rumors of a larger version in the works, but again, I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Once you step into the 10-inch tablet range, you really need apps that are optimized for that larger screen size or they’ll look terrible. Amazon may be able to launch a 10-inch tablet after Google rolls out Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), which could cause some of the app scaling issues. Even then, it will take time for Amazon to achieve the same deep level of code and hardware optimization. I suspect we’ll see a 10-inch version of the Kindle Fire by this time next year.

As far as 3G goes, Amazon really pioneered the use of 3G on their e-ink Kindle readers. For these devices, it makes sense — content is limited to books and documents, files are small, actual usage is minimal, and device battery life is measured in days.

It looks different with a color tablet. For starters, the Kindle Fire’s 8-hour battery life is already on the low end of things. You throw in 3G and the battery will take a hit. Then you run into the problem that all the files you’re likely to download or stream are significantly larger than the occasional black and white e-book. Streaming videos, color magazines, games and music requires huge amounts of data. If Amazon ever offers 3G as an option for the Kindle Fire, it won’t be cheap – and cheap is the name of the game.

How much of the 8GB of internal storage can the user access?

The device settings menu provides a running total of how much storage space you have available. When delivered, we had around 6.5 GB of storage space available.

Will there be a sale version of the Fire?

Who knows? But it makes sense. I’m just speculating, but it seems likely that Amazon will use the same discount formula it uses on its other Kindles to keep a low, competitive price for future Kindle Fire models. Due to the Kindle Fire’s color screen and significantly different platform, it would likely take some time to adjust the Kindle Fire’s special offer program. I wouldn’t expect a 2011 release.

Important information about Amazon Kids+ subscriptions (formerly known as Fire for Kids Unlimited and Kindle for Kids Unlimited) (collectively, the “Subscription”).

These Amazon Kids+ (formerly known as Fire for Kids Unlimited and Kindle for Kids Unlimited) Terms (“Terms”) are between you and Amazon Media EU Sàrl, Amazon Digital UK Ltd and/or their affiliates (“Amazon”, “we ‘ or ‘Us’) and set out our respective rights and obligations. Please note that your use of and subscription to the Amazon.co.uk Website are also subject to the Agreements set out and linked below and all other applicable terms, conditions, restrictions and requirements on the Amazon.co.uk Website, all of which ( as amended over time) be incorporated into these Terms. By signing up for a Subscription, you expressly accept that we may provide this Service (as defined below) to you within your 14 day cancellation period and you accept these terms, limitations and requirements:

By using or accessing Amazon Kids+, you agree to be bound by the terms of this Agreement on behalf of you and all members of your household and others using the Service under your account.

Please read the above terms carefully and please see our privacy notice, our children’s privacy notice, our cookies notice and our interest-based advertising notice, which do not form part of the terms.

Amazon Kids+ is a personalized service that offers thousands of content titles (collectively, the “Services”) for a customized and age-appropriate experience for children ages three to twelve.

We personalize content and features as part of Amazon Kids+, including showing recommendations about content titles, features, and services that may be of interest. We also strive to continuously improve Amazon devices and services and the experience with them.

The subscription is a monthly or yearly plan and is purchased per Amazon account.

The program is currently only available to UK customers.

Your subscription will automatically renew every month or year – depending on your selected billing cycle – until you cancel it. You can cancel your subscription at any time before the end of the first billing period, which in the case of promotions may vary depending on the offer. Current subscription fees are shown on www.amazon.co.uk/kidsplus.

You can cancel your subscription by contacting our customer service or through the Amazon Parent Dashboard. You may cancel your subscription at any time, effective at the end of the current billing period, by contacting our Customer Service or by visiting the Amazon Parent Dashboard. If you cancel your Amazon Kids+ monthly or annual subscription before the end of the first billing period, you will not receive a prorated refund of the fees already paid. You will continue to have access to your Amazon Kids+ subscription until the end of the billing period. If you cancel the annual subscription after the first billing cycle, you will immediately lose access to your Amazon Kids+ subscription and receive a prorated refund. If you cancel your subscription, the titles you have purchased through the program will be removed from your account, devices and applications at the end of the billing period.

14-day cancellation right: If you paid your subscription fee as soon as you signed up for Amazon Kids+, you can cancel within 14 days of signing up. If you choose to cancel, we will refund your full subscription fee.

We reserve the right to accept or decline any subscription at our sole discretion. We may take reasonable steps to prevent fraud, including limiting the number of titles that can be accessed through the Program at one time.

We may, from time to time, offer eligible customers a free trial of Amazon Kids+. We consider your free or paid subscription history when determining if you qualify for a free trial.

You need a current, valid credit card to sign up and pay for the subscription. Please do not sign in to Amazon Kids+ with a card linked to your bank account, such as a B. a debit card. If we are unable to process your payment using your specified payment method, we reserve the right to charge a payment method that we have on file for you in your Amazon customer account. If you purchase a subscription or begin a free period for a subscription, your subscription will automatically continue and you authorize us (without further notice, unless required by applicable law) to use the then applicable periodic subscription fee including all taxes collect the payment method we have on file for you. If all payment methods we have on file for you are declined for payment of your subscription fee, your subscription will be canceled unless you provide us with a new payment method. If you provide us with a new payment method and are successfully charged before your subscription is cancelled, your new subscription term will be based on the original billing date and not the successful charge date. You can use the settings under “Your Account” to update your specified payment method(s).

At the end of your free period, your subscription will be upgraded to a monthly or annual subscription, depending on the free period, unless you notify us before the end of the free period that you wish to cancel your subscription. If you do not wish to continue your subscription, you can unsubscribe at any time during the free period by contacting our Customer Service or by visiting the Amazon Parent Dashboard. If you cancel your free trial subscription at any time during the free period, your rights to all Amazon Kids+ content will be revoked and your payment method will not be charged. During the remainder of the original free period, you have the option to reactivate your free period, with the same right to cancel at any time during the original free period if you do not wish to continue your subscription.

The price of your subscription may change if, for example, you become an Amazon Prime member or cancel your Amazon Prime membership. We may change the subscription terms or fees at any time and in our sole discretion. An increase in the applicable subscription fee will not apply until the end of your current billing cycle.

Learn More For customers who already have an Amazon Kids+ subscription, when you activate a new Fire Kids or Kids Pro tablet, Kindle Kids Edition, or Echo Dot Kids Edition, your active subscription will be automatically replaced and you will receive a Year of Amazon Kids+ from that time.

Subscription content is subject to change at any time. We cannot guarantee that specific books, movies, TV shows, apps or games or any other type of content will remain available through the subscription, and certain content is only available on compatible devices.

We may, at our discretion, terminate your access to the Subscription without notice. In this case you will receive a pro rata refund. However, we will not provide a refund for termination in connection with conduct that, in our sole discretion, violates any applicable law or Terms of Service, or involves fraud or abuse of the subscription.

Syncing reconciles the digital purchases on your Amazon account with your Kindle Fire. Syncing can be done by swiping down from the top of the screen and tapping the Sync button. Kindle Fire can also sync reading (or viewing) progress between your other devices using the Kindle or Amazon Videos apps. This technology is known as Whispersync and is usually enabled by default, but settings can also be customized through your Amazon account.[1]
