Ambient light is called general lighting because it is light that covers the entire space like a chandelier or a flush-mounted light fixture on the ceiling in the center of the room.
Also, ambient light comes from smaller light sources that contribute to the overall light in the room, like a table lamp or floor lamp. Thus, ambient light is a fundamental light source that is indirect rather than focused.

Ambient light differs from other types of artificial light, such as task and accent lighting, which are more localized forms of light.
Ambient light sources
There are many sources of ambient light that are useful in interior design. Use different sources to achieve the right level of lighting for different times of the day.
Chandeliers and Pendant Lights – These lights hang from the ceiling and have one or more light bulbs. Many of these lights are decorative. This light may not reach the entire room, requiring other light sources to illuminate any dark corners.

Other forms of light
You can use any light sources available to create a layered look to add depth and interest to your space.
Natural Light – Many people forget that sunlight and moonlight are important sources of indoor and outdoor light. Windows bring in light during the day, making the need for extra light at certain times of the day less important. Task lighting – Task lighting illuminates an area where you are performing a task, such as a desk lamp for study or under cabinet lighting in a kitchen. Accent Lighting – This lighting highlights certain areas to draw more attention to them. For example, you could illuminate specific architectural features in your home or a piece of wall art.
The right light balance
Ambient light has the biggest impact on mood; that is why it is also called mood lighting. It is therefore important to set the ambient light correctly.

Here are some factors to consider when considering ambient light sources.
location
Consider where you will need an ambient light source to illuminate the space. You can’t use ambient light to obliterate every dark corner, but you can consider where overall lighting will have the most impact. Complement with shapes of moving lights like lamps if you can’t use overhead lights.
colour
The color of light, both warm and cold, has a noticeable impact on the mood and feeling one has in a given space. Most of the time, cool light, light with blue undertones, looks too harsh for the overall interior lighting.
Warm light or light with yellow undertones creates a cozy atmosphere.
However, you don’t want your light to turn too yellow. Therefore, measured in Kelvin, most experts recommend ambient lights ranging from 2000K, a bright white, to 3000K, a warm white.
brightness
Your ambient lighting needs vary throughout the day. Therefore, it’s important to have a way to control the amount of ambient light in a given space. Dimmers on ceiling lights are helpful here, as are multiple light sources such as lamps that can be switched on and off as needed.
style
All of the lighting in your space should work together to create a cohesive look. Use different categories of lamps but try to keep a consistent style.

Lighting usually consists of “light tubes” installed around the dashboard and in the doors to emit a dim light that does not distract the driver. Additional menus are introduced into the instrument cluster or radio system to allow control of the colors and brightness of the lighting. The number of colors is determined by the age and equipment of the car.
For certain models we now offer after-market kits that offer a very similar look to the factory system at a lower cost. These kits use the same light tubes in the doors and dashboard and have the same control over brightness and colors.
We can also offer lighted air vents, lighted Burmester grills, lighted and motorized tweeters and many other cosmetic parts.

New to the forum. I just picked up my 2020 x3 xDrive30i 2 weeks ago and have been enjoying the ride so far. Coming from a 2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport HSE, the x3 feels more like a car compared to the Disco.
A few modifications I’ve done so far have included adding ambient lighting to the car, upgrading the front turn signals to LEDs, installing a clear bra for the lower front of the bumper, and coating the vehicle with ceramic. I was quickly disappointed to find out that the 2020 ambient lighting package does not come with Vernasca leather. I was at the dealership looking at one with Sensatec and didn’t notice any ambient lighting in it and thought mine would have it as the specs were pretty similar to what I’ve seen at another dealership that had the leather ambient lighting but was not listed in the window sticker. I found the interior a little dark and even in Disco Sport there was dim but moody lighting along all 4 doors. The spec I had wasn’t what I really wanted but due to COVID there is a very limited inventory of cars here in NJ and especially at Open Road where I got mine from. As far as my build goes, I have a premium package, cognac Vernasca leather, and driver assist with the standard 18-inch Y-spoke wheels. I’ve noticed at other retailers that the convenience packs have the upgraded 19″ Ferric Gray wheels.
As for the lighting, the installation was a project. I’m by no means a mechanic but have a basic knowledge of adding accessories. I tapped into the front wiring fuse box by adding a fuse but couldn’t find a fuse that was an ACC power source that would only turn on when the car turned on so the lights only went out after 6 minutes . Installing the cables from the passenger side to the driver’s side footwell wasn’t as difficult as I thought. I installed 4 lights, one under each footwell front and rear, and a fiber optic cable along the dash and center console. Each lighting set has its own fuse tap. Here are some photos of what the interior looks like now at night, with a before image. The lighting is not as bright as in the photos, I took it with the iPhone in night mode. The lights can be controlled via remote and app to change colors and adjust brightness, and they’re completely unobtrusive when driving at night. I know it’s not the same as OEM, but it’s much better with some light than when it’s completely dark.

Which car has best ambient lighting?
Luxury brands like Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, and BMW have some of the most vibrant ambient lighting on modern cars. High-end automakers like Bentley and Rolls-Royce take opulence up a few notches by using ambient lighting to create beautiful visual effects.

What is ambient lighting?
The feature uses courtesy lights placed around the cab to enhance the design and maybe even reassure the driver and passengers. In addition to the footwells, some ambient lighting systems often illuminate the door and instrument panel trim, cup holders, air conditioning vents, and speaker surrounds. Some cars offer the ability to customize the color of the ambient lighting, and some even allow the lighting to pulse to the beat of the audio system for additional customization options.
Every car manufacturer makes ambient lighting differently. Some are subtle, as with certain Nissan, Infiniti, Honda, and Acura products. At the other end of the spectrum are systems that can get very bright, as in new Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Porsche models. More expensive vehicles even have the option of simultaneously illuminating the cabin in two colors, one main color and a second one that acts like a pipeline on certain parts of the interior. Then there are newer Mercedes cars that can slowly change the color of the cabin while driving.

Why is ambient lighting only recently common?
Incandescent bulbs have long been the preferred choice for vehicle lighting. While it worked, element size was limited and the bulbs didn’t last long. LED technology has changed that, allowing automakers to use a solid-state electronic light source that can support multiple colors from a diode. This has allowed automakers to create all of the cool interior lighting patterns you see in vehicles today because LEDs are more configurable. They also last longer than an incandescent bulb.
Which cars have the best ambient lighting?
Among mainstream cars, the Kia Soul was one of the first to feature ambient lighting. The last two generations featured multicolored lights around the speakers that pulsed to the music. The current Soul adds new themes and illuminated interior panels, giving the car a more welcoming cabin. You can choose anything from a dance floor to a quiet café-like atmosphere to adapt the atmosphere to your mood. Kia’s flagship K900 sedan takes it up a notch with 64-color ambient lighting, including seven custom themes developed with the Pantone Color Institute. Sports cars like the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro also feature ambient lighting to brighten up the interior, with the former even allowing you to change the colors of the instrument cluster.
Luxury brands like Mercedes-Benz, Lexus and BMW have some of the most vibrant ambient lights of any modern car. High-end automakers like Bentley and Rolls-Royce take opulence up a few notches by using ambient lighting to create beautiful visual effects. Rolls-Royce, for example, transforms the headliner into a beautiful night sky using strands of fiberglass installed in the headliner. In Bentleys, high-end sound systems illuminate the door speakers to highlight intricate (and beautiful) details.

Is ambient light safe?
The researchers found each driver’s perception of the vehicle improved through the use of ambient light. Drivers found the interiors more spacious, the interior design and finish more attractive and the controls easier to use. Generally speaking, they felt safer, too.
Cost to Install LED Lighting in 2022
A study by engineers at BMW and the Lighting Engineering Group at Ilmenau University of Technology found that ambient lighting improves the driver’s perception of the vehicle interior. Such lighting, which is offered in a variety of colors in more and more mid-range and luxury vehicles, intensifies the perception of space, enhances the material appearance and gives the driver a feeling of security.
The number of light sources in a car has grown tremendously over the last decade and this trend is not expected to slow down. Previous studies have shown that annoying and uncomfortable glare is eliminated when luminance is kept below 0.1 cd/m² (candelas per square meter, a measure of luminance). Other studies show that drivers feel less distracted when they can control lighting levels.
But what does all that ambient light do to the driving experience?
In conducting the study, published Monday in the journal Lighting Research and Technology, the researchers had 31 people “drive” a real car in a simulator. The light intensity on the simulated road varied from 0.1 cd/m² to 1.5 cd/m². The engineers tested a dozen lighting scenarios with different colors, luminance levels and positions. Drivers were asked about spatial perception in the car, interior quality, perceived safety, and other factors. Their emotional states were also recorded using questionnaires before and after the test.
Researchers found that each driver’s perception of the vehicle was enhanced through the use of ambient light. Drivers found the interiors more spacious, the interior design and finish more attractive, and the controls easier to use. In general, they also felt safer. But a little goes a long way. A few well-placed lights are just as effective as many lights, and increasing the brightness did nothing to improve the driver’s impression. On the contrary – it led to complaints about annoying glare.
Interestingly, drivers perceived blue lighting as brighter than orange or red. The researchers suggest that color is important for brand identity, but the test did not provide conclusive results on the effect of ambient light on the driver’s emotional state.
The researchers also found that ambient light did not affect driver performance, but the test wasn’t very strenuous as drivers did nothing but stay in their lane. Researchers plan to expand the study to include other lighting colors and how ambient lighting helps or hinders tasks such as locating controls and using features like a navigation system. They’re also curious about interior lighting that responds to input from passengers, the car, and the environment.
“The benefits and problems arising from such systems, as well as their acceptability by drivers, have yet to be tested and verified,” says Luca Caberletti, the BMW engineer who led the project. “Nevertheless, they offer a new, interesting, emotional and much more colorful way to understand and further develop vehicle interior lighting.”

Are LED bulbs legal?
There are two types of LED bulbs: Original Equipment (OE) and retrofit. OE LED bulbs are completely road legal and fitted as standard by car manufacturers. However, OE LED bulbs are a non-replaceable part and so if the bulb fails then the entire headlight needs to be replaced.
Cost to Install LED Lighting in 2022
You are probably familiar with many of the laws that govern how we can use our cars. But what you may not know is that there are also laws that govern the components inside – including our lightbulbs.
United Nations (UN) legislation describes how every car lamp should work. This contains:
how bright the bulb should be (in lumens)
how much electricity the lightbulb should use
Bulb shape/design including specification information on filament location to ensure light output is correct
What does this mean for drivers on a practical level? Let’s take a look at some of the common areas people have questions about.
Brighter car bulbs
Brighter bulbs are designed to keep drivers safe by allowing them to see farther on dark roads. A brighter bulb alone shouldn’t result in additional glare since the light output is well defined and glare is usually an indicator of another problem.
Brighter lamps are fully road legal as long as they meet the above regulations. Clever design, different filament thicknesses, precise filament position and blue stripes are used as methods to direct light where it is needed without exceeding legal limits.
While another way to achieve a brighter bulb is to simply increase the wattage, exceeding the wattage limit means the bulb is not a road legal bulb.
White car bulbs
Whiter bulbs are also fully road legal as long as they meet the above regulations. Generally, a coating is used to create a whiter light and this blocks some of the light. This means that some lamps fall below the minimum allowed lumens. Other bulbs then increase the wattage to bring them within legal lumens, but too much wattage to be road legal.
All whiter Ring Pro 5000K bulbs are 100% road legal.
HID lamps
High intensity discharge (HID) lamps have their own UN legislation, although broadly similar to the higher level legislation. As long as an HID lamp meets the specifications of this legislation, it is road legal.
An important rule with HID bulbs is that they should only be installed in a vehicle that originally had HID bulbs. If your car originally had halogen bulbs, it is not street legal to install HID bulbs.
Led Lamps
There are two types of LED bulbs: Original Equipment (OE) and Retrofit.
OE LED bulbs are fully road legal and are fitted as standard by car manufacturers. However, OE LED bulbs are a non-replaceable part and if the bulb fails, the entire headlight will need to be replaced.
A retrofit is the replacement of a standard light bulb with an LED version. At the moment it is perfectly legal for you to replace an internal light bulb with an LED light bulb. However, there is no legislation covering the retrofitting of outward-facing light sources and therefore outdoor LED lamps are not road legal.

2022 Cost to Install Light Fixtures
The biggest cost factors when installing new lighting are the number and type of fixtures you choose and the condition of your home’s wiring.
number of lights
Some companies charge by light. For recessed fixtures, the fee per fixture includes the fixture body, wiring, lamp and trim, LED bulb, and labor cost for installation.
Number of lights Total cost 2-4 $406 5-10 $948 11 and up $2,030
For rooms with existing lighting, a thumbtack professional and lighting installation specialist in Rancho Cucamonga, CA will charge $65 to $85 per downlight, including materials and labor. The company charges an additional $100 to $125 per room for rooms without an existing power source. Price fluctuations reflect the height of the ceiling.
Existing wiring
All lights require wiring, junction boxes and switches. If you’re replacing one with a new light fixture of the same style, you likely have the necessary wiring and power supply. If you’re building from scratch or changing to a different type of light fixture — say, from a wall light to recessed lighting — the electrician must add wire, a box, and a switch, as well as cut into the drywall, increasing labor costs.
It is best to simply replace an old lamp with a new one in the same place. Moving furniture is expensive.
Typical costs for additional electrical work in lighting installation:
Add a dimmer switch or regular switch: $104
$104 Add an in-ceiling junction box: $75 to $250
$75 to $250 Pull out old wire: $2.65 per square foot
age of the house
If your home is over 35 years old, your electrical wiring, panels, outlets, and amperage ratings may need an update before you can install this new 1,000-watt bulb chandelier in the foyer.
In older homes, you may need to fix one of these common electrical problems:
Insufficient power supply: $1,300 to $3,000
Modern homes need a lot more juice than older ones. Before the 1970s, households had a total of 60 amps of electricity. In the 21st century, a typical home is 200 amps, more than three times the rating of old homes.
Upgrading your power supply will make your home both safer and more convenient. To increase the amperage, the switchboard must be replaced and the house rewired.
Legacy wiring: $1,500 to $10,000
Rewiring a home costs $1,500 to $10,000 depending on the size of the home and whether you also need to replace the panel.
Button and tube wiring, used in homes built between the 1880s and the 1930s, is a system that dates back to Edison’s time. It can only handle 60 amps of electricity for a home, so the system is easy to overload. Suffice it to say that button and tube wiring is not secure or conforming to modern codes. You will have to completely rewire the house and install a new panel.
Aluminum wiring used in the home in the 1960s and 1970s is downright dangerous. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission houses with aluminum wiring are 55 times more likely to be “fire prone” than houses with copper. It also wears out at the terminals, so if you can’t rewire the entire house, at least get your electrician to add a short length of copper wire to the end of each aluminum wire.
permits
Permit costs vary by location, but typically range from $20 to over $100. Installing a light fixture doesn’t require a permit, but if you end up having to change the wiring in a structure to accommodate the new lighting, you may need a permit for the project.
The Psychology Behind LED Ambient Lighting
When you come across the term “car LED lighting” you probably think of sleek looking headlights and taillights that are super bright. However, LED lighting is so versatile that it can be placed anywhere in your car. One place where LEDs are definitely taking things to the next level is in the vehicle interior.
Here comes the concept of ambient lighting! For those unfamiliar with the term, ambient lighting refers to LED lighting that goes beyond just dashboard lighting. These are lighting elements that are installed elsewhere in the vehicle interior.
But how exactly does ambient lighting help? Aside from that incredibly progressive feeling, it also helps create a cool and exciting emotional atmosphere that makes you feel safe and comfortable. It has also been shown to result in reduced driving fatigue while instilling a sense of pride.
You can find LED ambient lighting options for almost every part of your car. These include presence detection lights, brake lights, night vision and many other options. The concept behind ambient lighting is simple – it’s designed to affect our mood whenever we get in our car.
We often speak of dull colors or colors that are bright. This proves that color affects how we feel. The idea is the same as for interior lighting. The fact that LEDs come in a wide variety of colors means we can choose the ones we are most comfortable with. Factors such as eye fatigue and alertness and concentration can all be affected by ambient lighting.
Take blue ambient lighting, for example. It makes it super easy to find controls in the car. However, it’s not that convenient. Orange LED ambient lighting is more pleasant, but the brighter it is, the more likely it is that the driver will be distracted.
LED ambient lighting might be more common in higher-end vehicles, but we’re starting to see a trend where lower-cost models also have the feature. You don’t have to break the bank to decorate your car’s interior with the perfect colored lights. There are always many options and customizations to choose from.
Since the LED ambient lighting influences the driver’s attention, it contributes to safety. You’re less likely to lose focus and drive off-road.
Versatility is the name of the game with LED lighting. They can be installed on dome lights, backlit instrument panels, map lights, controls, on gear knobs, in door panels and on displays.
In addition, the LED ambient lighting can be adjusted in brightness, allowing the driver to achieve the most comfortable shade.
One thing remains true, ambient lighting affects the driver’s psyche. While they can help increase your alertness behind the wheel, the wrong lighting can create a distraction that only increases the likelihood of something going wrong.
The best colors as well as the brightness need to be carefully researched. Once you’ve made the right choice, it’s time to transform your car into an icon of elegance and comfort with LED ambient lighting.
Cost to Install LED Lighting in 2022
Project plans and electrical wiring costs plus labor will affect your costs. Read on to learn how much LED lights cost.
The price of light emitting diode (LED) bulbs, dimmers and strips is becoming more and more affordable. These lights are among the most energy efficient on the market, but the number one factor affecting the cost is what you want to do with them.
How much do LED lights cost?
Replacing incandescent and compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs with LED bulbs costs about $4 to $8 for a 10 watt LED. So if you’re replacing 24 lightbulbs, it’ll cost $96-$192 to replace them all at once.
When buying multiple LED bulbs, you usually get volume discounts. For example, look at the cost of this 6-pack of light bulbs on Amazon.

10W LED bulbs are the standard replacement for 60-100W incandescent bulbs. LED lights use lumens instead of watts. In the table below you will find the suitable LED lamp that can be used as a replacement for an incandescent lamp and the average price.
Comparable LED bulb size and price to standard incandescent bulbs. Incandescent Watts LED Watts Lumens Cost per bulb (average) 40w 6w LED 450 lm $3 60w 8.5w LED 800 lm $5 75w 10w LED 1,000 lm $7 100w 15w LED 1,600 lm $9 150 W 25W LED 2,500lm $12
While the initial cost may be higher, these durable and highly durable lights will save you significant amounts of energy and therefore money over time. Try our electricity cost calculator to calculate the energy costs of LED lamps.
Smart LED bulbs
The new smart LED bulbs, used with voice-controlled services, cost between $40 and $100 per bulb. These bulbs are capable of voice-activated color changing, dimming and on/off functions from a remote location.
There are even smart LED lights with built-in video recording capabilities using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Many call these nanny cams so you can discreetly keep an eye on the nanny or babysitter.
Color changing bulbs also cost a little more than a typical LED bulb, but offer the ability to control the mood with a smartphone or remote control.
LED light bars
LED light bars offer an elegant way to add accent lighting in many applications. You can add backlighting for a piece of art, add under cabinet or bed lighting, or add a glow to pretty much any indirect surface with the strips.
Strips often come with an adhesive backing and a low-voltage power supply, meaning almost anyone can install them without an electrician or expensive tools. Stripes often range in price from $50 for a standard white stripe to $300 for a color-changing variety.
Integrated devices
One way to upgrade to LED lighting is to replace the entire fixture with a new fixture that has built-in LED lighting instead of standard bulb sockets. Lights typically cost between $100 and $150 and require an electrician to install.
Install track or string LED light
Tracks or strings of lights are the easy way to get targeted and personal lighting for any space. Track lights are particularly popular in kitchens, dens and craft areas, allowing the user to direct the light where they need it.
Otherwise, you could put up a string of lights to highlight artwork or prints to make them a highlight of your room. Track lights typically have six or more lights on the track and cost around $50 to $200 for a simple style, but elaborate styles can cost up to $1,500.
A DIYer can install track lights using a cord that plugs into a wall outlet. You typically hang the track with sheetrock screws or the screws that came with the track lighting kit.
However, if the wiring needs to be changed or added, an electrician will need to be called in. Where an overhead light already exists, you can hook onto these wires without installing more. Figure 2-3 hours and between $150 and $250 for the labor.
DIY of LED lights
The DIY LED light projects are minimal. The only thing you can do yourself is change the bulbs or install a plugin rail or strip. If you don’t have the tools, time, or knowledge, a handyman will charge $40-$80 for a small project.
Any other project will likely require a permit and a licensed electrician. Licensed electricians charge $50 to $100 per hour, depending on the rate in your area.
Quality with energy saving
LED lights are the same or in many cases better quality than comparable incandescent or CFL lights. (The comparison to CFLs is probably pointless, as most companies have stopped producing them due to disposal issues with toxic mercury.) LEDs will save you money on your energy bills long after you’ve installed them.
How much do LED lights save per month?
Many new and refurbished lighting projects can use indoor and outdoor LED lighting. These LED lights will save you nearly 85 percent on your electricity bill, generate less heat, and some last up to 35 or 40,000 hours.
The estimated savings for the average homeowner by replacing 24 incandescent light bulbs with LEDs is nearly $7,000 over twenty years. Likewise, consider using solar powered lights where practical for even more savings. These are also becoming increasingly affordable.
For that “warm, cozy” feeling, choose warm white LED bulbs. Cool white is a bright blue, and natural incandescent bulbs fall somewhere between these colors. New smart lights come in a variety of colors.
Use our lighting cost calculator to calculate how much you’ll save by upgrading to LED lighting.
Why do LEDs save money?
LED lights save money because they use less energy to operate. LEDs consume less watts for the same light output, i.e. they consume less energy than an incandescent lamp for the same operating time.
Not convinced of the savings? Use our Watts to kWh calculator to calculate the amount of energy a 60W lightbulb uses when left on for 8 hours compared to a 10W lightbulb. You should get 14.4 kWh per 60W bulb per day.
If you multiply that by 12 cents per hour, you will see that a single 60W light bulb used 8 hours per day costs $1.73 per month. How many lightbulbs do you have in your house?
Depending on how much you are spending per bulb and how often they are used, the payback time is typically 4-8 months per bulb when converting to LED.
Estimates for a professional installation
