Invite a child to say the opening prayer.

Reach out to the children when you have encouraged them to do something during the week.

Explain that there is another way we can be helped when we are sick. When Jesus Christ walked the earth, He blessed and healed many people. He used the power of the priesthood to heal her.

The baby had come earlier than expected and was very small and weak. The doctor said the baby might not live more than a few hours. Jessica could see how worried her father was. She was sad because she wanted the baby to live. Jessica’s father called one of her home teachers to help give a blessing to the baby. When the home teacher arrived, they all went into the bedroom where Jessica’s mother and her new brother were. Jessica’s father and the home teacher gently placed their hands on the new baby’s tiny head, and Jessica’s father blessed him to live on to fulfill his mission on earth. Warm comfort and peace filled Jessica. She knew that through the power of the priesthood her little brother would grow and become strong. Luke 5 is the fifth chapter of the Gospel of Luke in the New Testament of the Christian Bible, traditionally attributed to the evangelist Luke, a companion of the apostle Paul on his missionary journeys.[1] The chapter tells of the recruitment of Jesus’ early disciples and goes on to describe Jesus’ teaching and healing ministry. As the chapter progresses, one encounters early criticism from Jewish religious authorities.

Catching Fish and Men: The First Disciples[ edit ]

Verses 1-11 tell of the calling of the first disciples of Jesus. Jesus arrives at the Sea of ​​Galilee or Sea of ​​Galilee. Bible scholar William Smith suggests that “there was a fair and fertile plain called ‘Gennesaret'” in the north-west corner of the Sea of ​​Galilee and “from it was derived the name ‘Sea of ​​Galilee'” used by Luke in Luke 5 :1.[3] According to Eric Franklin, Gennesaret was the district south of Capernaum[4] where Jesus’ ministry in chapter 4 was located.

Here Jesus continues to preach the “word of God” to the many hearers, using Simon’s fishing boat as a platform. Then he tells the fishermen to go fishing again. The story of the calling of the first disciples is also told at Mark 1:16-20 and Matthew 4:18-22, although Matthew’s account also includes Andrew, Simon’s brother. The story is expanded by Luke, who connects it to the miraculous catch of fish. Luke also revealed earlier that Jesus had healed Simon’s mother-in-law, establishing a bond between the two.[7] Franklin notes an emphasis on Simon Peter’s distinction of “the presence of God in Jesus,” comparable to the prophet Isaiah’s response to his vision of “the Lord of hosts” at Isaiah 6:5:[4]

Woe is me, for I am destroyed! Because I’m a man with unclean lips. (Isaiah 6:5) Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man. (Luke 5:8) [8]

The calling of the first disciples is told differently in the Gospel of John, not in connection with the miraculous catch of fish and with Andrew as the mediator who brings Simon to Jesus.[9]

In the final chapter of John’s Gospel, the evangelist tells of a later miraculous catch of fish when the risen Jesus meets seven of his disciples who are again fishing at the lake. At first they don’t recognize him. Then Jesus tells them to fish on the right side of the boat. They catch a large load and begin to see who he is (John 21:1-14).

Healing a leper[edit]

Jesus encounters a leper who falls on his face and begs him directly, “Lord, if you wish, you can cleanse me” (verse 12b). Jesus touches him – an unusual gesture since lepers were quarantined according to Jewish law (Leviticus 13-14) – and heals him: “Be clean.” Healing occurs in an instant. Jesus asks him to present himself to the priest. This will provide official confirmation of the healing and, along with an offering, will be in accordance with the law “as Moses commanded” (verse 14).

Since Jesus is now followed by many who listen to him and want to be healed, he withdraws into the desert.

Healing the Paralytic[edit]

Jesus teaches in a house where Pharisees and teachers of the law are present. Luke indicates that the members of the religious authorities come from Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. There is a paralyzed man and his friends bring him to Jesus by lowering him through the roof of the house from above. When Jesus sees the faith of his friends, he declares that his sins are forgiven. In the eyes of religious authorities, Jesus’ act of forgiveness constitutes blasphemy. He knows their thoughts and challenges them: Which is easier, to forgive sins or to heal them? (Anyone can say that he forgives sins.) Then Jesus commands the man to get up, take his mat and go home. Jesus’ instant healing demonstrates his authority to forgive sins.[10] The people praise God, but with the seemingly silent presence of the religious authorities, Luke has begun to set the stage for the growing conflict. This story is also told in a shorter version in Mark 2.

In John 5 Jesus also heals a paralytic man (at the pool of Bethesda), which puts him in conflict with religious authorities because the healing takes place on the Sabbath.

The Calling of Levi[edit]

Jesus asked the tax collector Levi to follow him. Levi does so immediately. Later he arranges a big feast for Jesus with other tax collectors present. Pharisees and some teachers of the law complain that Jesus feasted with tax collectors and other outcasts. Tax collectors are despised as they collaborate with the Romans and tend to enrich themselves. Jesus answers that healthy people do not need a doctor, he came to help those who need to repent. This event is also related in Mark 2:13-17 and in Matthew 9:9-13 (where the publican is named Matthew).

About fasting[edit]

The behavior of Jesus’ disciples is criticized, their lack of fasting and prayer – they eat and drink instead. In response, Jesus compares himself to a bridegroom and his disciples to guests at the wedding feast. Now that he’s still with them, it’s time for celebration, but he’s also announcing his death for the first time in his ministry. Fasting is appropriate when he is gone: In Acts 13:2-3 “we are told that they fasted”.[11]

A double parabola[edit]

The answer to the criticism of fasting is immediately followed by a double parable.[12] Jesus compares “old” and “new”: first, a new patch does not go with an old garment, and second, new wine does not go with old skins. The reasons are clear: tearing a new garment to repair an old one would destroy the new one and may not fit, and using old wineskins that have already been stretched with use may not be able to accommodate new wine that will match the old wineskin expands beyond its limits during fermentation: you burst and all is lost. The parable is also related at Matthew 9:14-17 and Mark 2:21-22, but only Luke uses the term παραβολὴν (parabolēn, a parable) in his account.

A traditional interpretation of the double parable is that Jesus’ new teaching is incompatible with the old paradigm:[13] His ministry deviates from Jewish tradition.[14] This interpretation of the incompatibility of “new” and “old” probably goes back to Marcion and was also used as an argument by later reformers within the church.[15]

Verse 39 [ edit ]

Jesus goes on to explain that the old wine is usually preferred to the new wine – “the old [wine] is better” – a comment not found in the other two Synoptic Gospels. This verse raises some difficulties in interpretation. If Jesus teaches separation from Judaism, would he say that the old is better?[15] A number of explanations have been given. One view is that the line does not belong here and should be ignored or removed, one by Marcion.[15] Another view suggests that Jesus is merely pointing out that old and familiar patterns are difficult to discard.[13] Another explanation suggests that Jesus is trying to salvage the old and the new relates to the teachings of his critics. Other explanations translate the original Greek words differently to make sense of the statement.[15]

Another approach is the suggestion not to assume that Jesus is talking about “old” and “new” religious teachings, but about his way of choosing disciples. So Jesus uses new methods (new clothes) to provide new people (vineskins) with a new message (wine).[15] He does not reject the “old”, but the “old” is limited and not accessible to everyone. At the beginning of his ministry he demonstrates that his reach is comprehensive, finding the sinner, the outcast, the poor and the sick.[15]

The interpretation favored by John Calvin regards old robes and old wineskins as representations of Jesus’ disciples. In his commentary on Matthew, Mark, and Luke, he explains that the new wine and unshrinked cloth represent the practice of fasting twice a week. Fasting in this way would be a burden for the new disciples and more than they could bear.

Asklepios is the ancient Greek god of medicine who is the son of Apollo. Asklepios represents the healing aspect of the medical arts. He was also the embodiment of the ideal doctor, he was the god of medicine and healing while also possessing the power to raise people from the dead.

Asclepius was the son of the Olympian god Apollo and the mortal Coronis and is considered one of the youngest Greek gods in mythology. His wife was the goddess of healing, her name was Epione, and together they had a number of children: Hygea, the goddess of hygiene, cleanliness and health; Laso, the goddess of recovery from illness; Aegle, the goddess of radiance and health; Panacea, the goddess of the panacea.

Aesculapius narrowly escaped death at birth: his mother died at birth, but he was saved by Apollo, who cut him from his mother’s womb and took him to a centaur – half horse, half human mythical creature – to study him to teach medicine. The centaur Chiron followed Apollo’s instructions and Asclepius grew up with a great knowledge of medicine and healing – much greater than that of either Apollo or Chiron.

He became so powerful that he could heal all people, including dying people, and he could even bring them back to life after death. Some legends say that Athena, the goddess of wisdom, gave Asclepius the blood of Medusa, and with that blood he found a way to revive humans. People loved him and called him a hero – but eventually other gods noticed, and many of them disagreed.

There was a point in his life when Asklepios healed a snake, which in turn taught him the secret of knowledge – remember that snakes were considered divine beings who were wise and had the ability to heal. Later, Asklepios carried a staff with a snake wrapped around it, which was then associated with healing.

There are versions of mythology that say Asclepius was in a secret prison when he was ordered to bring Glaucus back to life. As he sat in his prison pondering what to do, a snake crept near his staff. Unknowingly, he killed the snake by repeatedly hitting it with his staff. Later, another snake appeared with an herb in its mouth and placed it on the dead snake’s head, which was then brought back to life. Seeing this, he used the same herb and brought back Glaucus.

The Death of Asclepius

Once Asklepios began to bring people back from the dead, for example, Tyndareus, Glaucus, Capaneus, Hymenaeus and others. Some sources say that he even brought Hippolytus back from the dead at the request of Artemis, accepting gold for the deed.

Hades was not satisfied with this, however, and accused Asclepius of stealing from his subjects. This was because fewer and fewer people died because Asklepios healed them, which meant there were fewer and fewer souls to be welcomed into the underworld.

Hades complained to Zeus about this. Zeus was concerned that Asklepios would teach others the art of resurrection. So he decided to kill Asclepius with lightning. Apollo was very upset by this act and went and killed the Cyclopes who were making the lightning bolts for Zeus.

The punishment meted out to Asclepius was to show that a mortal man should only reach a certain limit in the natural order of things and that he is forbidden to transgress that natural order. By killing Asklepios with a bolt of lightning, Zeus wanted to make sure the rest of the human population understood that there was a bridgeless gulf between them and the gods.

However, Zeus was considerate enough to realize that Asklepios had done humanity a great service and decided to turn him into a constellation so that he could live in the sky forever. This constellation is called Ophiuchus, which translates to “The Serpent Keeper.”

The Asklepieion

After Zeus killed him, people began to worship Asklepios as a god because it was believed that even dead, he had the power to help people heal and take them out of pain. They built amazing temples to honor him, called Asklepieion, on many Greek islands and areas, and many people went there to seek a cure for their disease. Others used to go to the temples to learn the secrets of medicine. It is believed that Hippocrates, the father of medicine, studied at the Asklepieion of the island of Kos and began his medical career.

The Asklepieion is said to have been a sanctuary for the god, but also a healing center popular in antiquity. People went there hoping to be healed to find out the right treatment for them and some came to spend the night for the god to come to their dreams and tell them what they had to do to be healed . People could also go to the Asklepieion to exercise in the nearby gyms and bathe in the healing waters.

Sometimes snakes were involved in the healing practices; This is because snakes were sacred to Asclepius, so non-venomous snakes were allowed to roam the dormitory. This was done so that the snakes would be close to the patients to bring blessings and good luck.

With the rise of Christianity, the cult of Asclepius declined. However, there are some sanctuaries that can be found throughout Greece. The most famous Asklepieion is found in Kos, Epidaurus and Asklepios’ birthplace Trikala.

Final Thoughts

So who is the Greek god of healing? Asclepius may not have played a major role in Greek mythology, but it’s still interesting to learn about his life. He is the god of healing, and many medical things were created because of Asclepius, including the Hippocratic Oath – a promise new doctors make to the Greek gods, including Asclepius, that they will do their best to uphold medical standards.

On the first day we sat in a room and meditated for four and a half hours. Eyes closed, it could easily have been seven hours—or two. It felt timeless.

This is how sociologist Sarah Newell described her arrival at a spiritual healing center in central Brazil. She had traveled there as part of a Problems Without Passports (PWP) course at USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.

Taught by Erin Moore, Associate Professor (teaching) of Anthropology, The Global Performance of Healing allows students to learn about cultural anthropology by examining the practices of healing in other cultural contexts. As a case study, the course focused on spiritism, a healing practice in which mediums are said to channel spirits from other realms to deliver messages or instructions.

“All healing uses the power of the mind to move the body to heal,” said Moore, a cultural anthropologist with a background in medical anthropology. “People are getting sick everywhere, and all societies have developed practices, technologies and medicines to treat disease. However, not all peoples understand sickness and healing in the same way.”

In June, Moore and her students traveled to Brazil for two and a half weeks of field research in addition to two weeks of classes at USC.

“We weren’t in Brazil to heal ourselves or refute anything,” Moore said. “We were there to explore a culture – who believes and why do they believe?”

Body Mind and Soul

At a healing center just outside of Brasilia, Brazil, students met with his medium Valentim and spent the day observing and asking questions.

Most of the research, however, has been conducted in Abadiânia, home of the renowned spiritist healer John of God, a trance medium who claims to channel 47 different beings – or disincarnated spirits – to heal the body, mind and spirit.

When the students visited the compound where John of God is based, the Casa de Dom Inacio de Loyola, they waited in line with people from all over the world who had come to seek physical or spiritual healing.

“I feel like I’m at a concert as everyone around me sings along with the performer on the Great Hall stage,” wrote Cristina Gago, a dual major in human biology and health and humanity, on the class blog.

Meditation halls, tranquil gardens, therapeutic crystal baths, an apothecary and a waterfall were available on the Casa grounds. Everyone dressed in white with the idea that it would allow the spirits to see their auras better. Visitors stayed in pousadas, simple bed and breakfast accommodations that serve three meals a day.

Senior Caitlin Sims, a dual major in health and humanity at USC Dornsife and communications at USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, recalled her experiences at the Casa.

“As participating observers, we walked the path and had the conversation,” she said. “When we went to John of God, we wrote down all three problems we had or things we wanted to work on and it was translated for him once you were at the front of the line. Then he gives you some kind of prescription and whatever he prescribed we did.”

Prescriptions generally involved a combination of taking Passiflora herbal supplements from the pharmacy, sitting in silent meditation for varying lengths of time, and then visiting him again the next day.

Meditation sessions, a primary healing practice at the Casa, lasted anywhere from 3.5 hours to five or even six hours.

“It was a challenge for all of us, but a good experience,” said Sims. “The idea is for people in the meditation rooms to focus on positive, healing energy, which John of God says he feeds on to channel the spirits. This energy should also be able to be transferred there to others who need healing.”

Many students opted for what is known as spiritual “surgery,” or spiritual intervention, where they sat quietly with a group in a small meditation room with their eyes closed. Then the healer told them to cover the parts of the body they wanted the spirits to target.

Participants then had to go home and sleep or rest in a darkened room for 24 hours. Food had to be brought to them and Moore took away all electronic devices.

“I couldn’t speak, listen to music, read or write all the time,” recalled Senior Oliver Hayward, also a Health and Humanity major. “I could only eat in silence, get up to go to the bathroom and sleep. But in agreeing, I respected the customs of the casa. I decided to let go of my insecurities and really participate.”

In the second week, the focus shifted to a critical examination of the Casa rituals. Students collected stories of healing from patients, volunteers, and supposed mediums. The group also met with the author of a book about John of God.

“We’ve interviewed a lot of people, healing seekers and volunteers, who have lived there for decades,” Sims said.

During their stay in Brazil, the class also had the opportunity to visit the capital Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro and the old Portuguese colonial city of Pirenópolis. In Rio they visited beaches, the Corcovado and Sugar Loaf mountains, the Christ the Redeemer statue and also got a guided tour of the favelas, the Portuguese word for slums.

The course resonated with students, many of whom plan to enter the healthcare field.

“I chose this course because at some point after graduation I want to spend time in Africa or South America to provide medical assistance or do some type of research,” Hayward said. “I knew that going to Brazil would really give me a taste of how the healing process works in other countries.”

Moore reflected on what she wanted the students to take away from this experience.

“The most important thing is that students learn open-mindedness and understand that they only see the world in one direction because of their education, gender, cultural background and ethnicity. Others experience their worlds based on their own background.”

In Christian theology, the gifts of healing are among the spiritual gifts listed in 1 Corinthians 12. A major charism, gifts of healing are supernatural abilities given to a believer to minister to various kinds of healing and restoration through the power of the Holy Spirit.[1] In the Greek of the New Testament, both the words gift and healing are plural.[2]

In the account of the Great Commission in Mark’s gospel, Jesus explained that one of the signs to be followed by believers is healing after the laying on of hands. In the fifth chapter of James, the anointing with oil is associated with the laying on of hands and prayer for the sick. These symbolize that the believers were channels of divine power and that the healing was the work of the Holy Spirit. Healing is also related to the forgiveness of sins.[2]

Pentecostals and Charismatic Christians believe “that God made provision that physical healing would be a ministry of His church, and that healing gifts would work together with faith”.[2] However, they also believe that no healer will heal everything that comes to them.[3] The faith of the one praying is essential to healing, but often the faith of the one being prayed for is also important.[2] All Pentecostals and Charismatics are encouraged to pray for the healing of the sick, even if they do not claim possession of the supernatural gift.[4]
