However, not all peoples understand sickness and healing in the same way.”

In June, Moore and her students traveled to Brazil for two and a half weeks of field research in addition to two weeks of classes at USC.

“We weren’t in Brazil to heal ourselves or refute anything,” Moore said. “We were there to explore a culture – who believes and why do they believe?”

Body Mind and Soul

At a healing center just outside of Brasilia, Brazil, students met with his medium Valentim and spent the day observing and asking questions.

Most of the research, however, has been conducted in Abadiânia, home of the renowned spiritist healer John of God, a trance medium who claims to channel 47 different beings – or disincarnated spirits – to heal the body, mind and spirit.

When the students visited the compound where John of God is based, the Casa de Dom Inacio de Loyola, they waited in line with people from all over the world who had come to seek physical or spiritual healing.

“I feel like I’m at a concert as everyone around me sings along with the performer on the Great Hall stage,” wrote Cristina Gago, a dual major in human biology and health and humanity, on the class blog.

Meditation halls, tranquil gardens, therapeutic crystal baths, an apothecary and a waterfall were available on the Casa grounds. Everyone dressed in white with the idea that it would allow the spirits to see their auras better. Visitors stayed in pousadas, simple bed and breakfast accommodations that serve three meals a day.

Senior Caitlin Sims, a dual major in health and humanity at USC Dornsife and communications at USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, recalled her experiences at the Casa.

“As participating observers, we walked the path and had the conversation,” she said. “When we went to John of God, we wrote down all three problems we had or things we wanted to work on and it was translated for him once you were at the front of the line. Then he gives you some kind of prescription and whatever he prescribed we did.”

Prescriptions generally involved a combination of taking Passiflora herbal supplements from the pharmacy, sitting in silent meditation for varying lengths of time, and then visiting him again the next day.

Meditation sessions, a primary healing practice at the Casa, lasted anywhere from 3.5 hours to five or even six hours.

“It was a challenge for all of us, but a good experience,” said Sims. “The idea is for people in the meditation rooms to focus on positive, healing energy, which John of God says he feeds on to channel the spirits. This energy should also be able to be transferred there to others who need healing.”

Many students opted for what is known as spiritual “surgery,” or spiritual intervention, where they sat quietly with a group in a small meditation room with their eyes closed. Then the healer told them to cover the parts of the body they wanted the spirits to target.

Participants then had to go home and sleep or rest in a darkened room for 24 hours. Food had to be brought to them and Moore took away all electronic devices.

“I couldn’t speak, listen to music, read or write all the time,” recalled Senior Oliver Hayward, also a Health and Humanity major. “I could only eat in silence, get up to go to the bathroom and sleep. But in agreeing, I respected the customs of the casa. I decided to let go of my insecurities and really participate.”

In the second week, the focus shifted to a critical examination of the Casa rituals. Students collected stories of healing from patients, volunteers, and supposed mediums. The group also met with the author of a book about John of God.

“We’ve interviewed a lot of people, healing seekers and volunteers, who have lived there for decades,” Sims said.

During their stay in Brazil, the class also had the opportunity to visit the capital Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro and the old Portuguese colonial city of Pirenópolis. In Rio they visited beaches, the Corcovado and Sugar Loaf mountains, the Christ the Redeemer statue and also got a guided tour of the favelas, the Portuguese word for slums.

The course resonated with students, many of whom plan to enter the healthcare field.

“I chose this course because at some point after graduation I want to spend time in Africa or South America to provide medical assistance or do some type of research,” Hayward said. “I knew that going to Brazil would really give me a taste of how the healing process works in other countries.”

Moore reflected on what she wanted the students to take away from this experience.

“The most important thing is that students learn open-mindedness and understand that they only see the world in one direction because of their education, gender, cultural background and ethnicity. Others experience their worlds based on their own background.”

Jesus said that one of the signs that “will follow those who believe” was, “They will lay hands on the sick, and they will be healed” (Mark 16:17-18). Examination of this one passage might lead one to believe that whenever one has the courage to lay hands on a sick person, a miracle of healing is guaranteed. Even Jesus could not simply impose his goodwill on others. Mark 6:5 testifies that while he was in Capernaum, he “could do no mighty work there except lay hands on some sick and heal them.” What hindered the Lord’s work? Verse six says, “And he marveled at their unbelief.”

During my years of ministry, I have laid hands on hundreds of people in need of physical and spiritual deliverance. Believers have laid hands on me even in times of need. I know the joy of witnessing complete and immediate healing for others and for myself. I know from experience that what Jesus said is true. On the other hand, I have experienced the disappointment of seeing people unchanged after serving them. There have been times when I myself have not responded to prayers for my recovery in the way I had hoped. These inconsistencies bothered me. What was responsible for these seemingly random successes and failures?

One day I was reading the Bible and a verse seemed to jump off the page.

Luke 5:17:

And it came to pass on a certain day that he was teaching, there sat Pharisees and teachers of the law, who had come from all the cities of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.

If in that day “the power of the Lord was present to heal them,” there must have been other occasions when it was not present. What conditions must be met for the healing power of the Lord to be present?

“EVANGELISTIC HEALING”

In a number of biblical records of deliverance, nothing is required of the needy person except to be needy. This becomes very clear in the story of the healing of the blind man.

John 9:1-2:

And as Jesus was walking by, he saw a man who was blind from birth.

2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?

Psalm 51:5 says, “Behold, I am formed in unrighteousness; and in sin my mother conceived me.” This verse does not condemn the act of conception, but rather affirms the truth that all human beings are born dead in trespasses and sins. The disciples did not claim that this man’s physical blindness was caused by his sinful condition. They implied that he had committed a sin before he was born (although one has to wonder how such a thing could be possible). For the disciples, the only other option was to accuse the parents. No doubt they too wanted to know the cause of this birth defect. Did something go wrong during pregnancy? Was God angry with her? Were they cursed? Jesus put an end to their wonder once and for all.

V. 3:

Jesus answered: Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

This man was born blind for one reason – to be healed by Jesus. Neither Satan, nor sin, nor circumstances had caused this sickness. This man was a chosen vessel for God’s glory. “I must work the works of him who sent me while it is day,” said Jesus, “the night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world” (vv. 4-5).

V. 6:

When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made a paste out of the saliva and put the paste on the blind man’s eyes and said to him: Go and wash yourself in the pool of Siloam (which is by the side Interpretation, Sent.)

The blind man “went on his way,” says verse 7, “and washed, and came seeing.” Like Naaman in Elisha’s day, he did what he was told. However, his obedience can hardly be called faith in God. This man didn’t know who Jesus was! When the Pharisees later questioned him about Jesus, he said: “Whether he is a sinner or not I do not know; one thing I know, that I see now, though I was blind” (verse 25). This healing was not about the blind man’s faith. The event of that day transcended the meaning of the nameless man seeing for the first time. Although others had previously performed many of the same miracles as Jesus, no one had ever opened the eyes of a blind man. This work was reserved for the Messiah. Even the once-blind man knew that this was a very special miracle. “Since the world came into being it has not been heard of anyone opening the eyes of a person who was born blind,” he said (verse 32). The closest one came to such an act was when Elisha prayed that God would open (i.e., open again) the eyes of the Syrian army, after first “praying to the Lord and saying, I pray you, strike this people blindly. And he struck them blind, according to Elisha’s word” (2 Kings 6:18).

The healing of a man born blind is an example of an “evangelical” healing—the type of healing recorded most frequently in the Gospels and Acts. Such healings say nothing about the faith of the recipient, for the recipient is not yet saved. Such healing is used by God to call people into His kingdom. In modern times these healings are often witnessed in evangelistic campaigns in third world countries. It’s not (as some people suggest) that such people have any more faith than we do in the West. The fact is that the West has been sufficiently evangelized. Now we must learn to walk in truth.

I am not saying there is no healing for the saved. The Bible and personal experience prove the opposite. However, when we realize that the primary reason for healing is not the preservation of the human body but spiritual awakening, many questions are put to rest. Some things in life have to be endured. Therefore Paul (who clearly understood healing better than any of us) could say: “I delight in infirmities, in reproaches, in afflictions, in persecutions, in afflictions, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak then I am strong” (1 Corinthians 12:10).

THE HEALING OF THE PALSY MAN

The statement that “the power of the Lord was present to heal them” is found in the account of the crippled man’s healing. This account occurs in three of the four Gospels: Matthew chapter 9, Mark chapter 2, and Luke chapter 5. All three records indicate that this event occurred fairly early in Jesus’ ministry; for the calling out of Levi or Matthew follows immediately.

By consulting all three records we can discover the circumstances surrounding this healing. Matthew 9:1 says that Jesus had come to “his own city.” Mark identifies this city as Capernaum and tells us that “he preached the word to them.”

Mark 2:1-2:

And again after a few days he entered Capernaum; and it was announced that he was in the house.

2 And immediately many gathered together, so that there was no place to receive them, nay, not even around the door; and he preached the word to them.

From Luke 5:17 we learn that Jesus not only preached, but “he taught” and that “Pharisees and teachers of the law sat there.” But what was his message? What was his message that day and every day? “I must preach the kingdom of God,” he said at Luke 4:43, “for for this purpose I was sent.” Matthew 4:17 says: “From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, Repent! For the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” As Jesus said later on the road to Emmaus, he came “that repentance and forgiveness of sins might be preached in his name among all nations, beginning in Jerusalem” (Luke 24:47). The path to forgiveness begins with repentance. That was also his message that day in Capernaum.

Luke 5:18-19:

And behold, men were putting a paralyzed man to bed, and were looking for a means of bringing him in and laying him before him.

19 And when they could not find a way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up onto the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles in the midst of Jesus.

Verse 20 says, “And when he saw their faith, he said to him, Man, your sins are forgiven you.” Jesus was impressed not only by the sick man’s faith, but also by that of his friends. That he “saw their faith” had to be a revelation. But what can we suppose from what we have learned so far that they believed? Did the sick man think he would be healed like Lystra’s paralytic?

Acts 14:8-10:

And there sat a certain man in Lystra, powerless in his feet, a cripple from his mother’s womb, who had never walked:

9 The same heard Paul speak, who looked at him steadfastly and saw that he had faith to be healed,

10 Said in a loud voice: Stand tall on your feet. And he jumped and went.

If so, Jesus gave him a very strange answer. Jesus taught people to repent and believe the gospel. The words of truth had found their mark in the hearts of these men. They had repented of their sins. Realizing this, Jesus said, “Man, your sins are forgiven.”

The scribes and the Pharisees were angry. “Who can forgive sins but God alone?” they said to themselves (Luke 5:21). Had they recognized who was standing in front of them, they would have recognized that they had answered their own question! Jesus responded to them as if they had voiced their thoughts for all to hear.

Luke 5:22-24:

But when Jesus saw their thoughts, he answered them and said to them, What are the reasons in your hearts?

23 Would it be easier to say: Your sins are forgiven you; or to say: get up and go?

24 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins (he said to the paralyzed), I say to you, get up, take up your bed, and go into your house.

Therein lies an amazing truth. Healing is a sign of God’s forgiveness. Like forgiveness, healing is a gift of mercy. After our repentance, we are given a new beginning. Our sins are erased as if they never occurred. A gift of healing is a tangible sign of a new beginning.

Acts 3:19:

Therefore repent and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out when the times of refreshment come from the presence of the Lord;

The paralyzed man had repented. He had believed and received forgiveness of his sins. This miraculous healing was a sign of his forgiveness. Jesus began his sentence by addressing the religious dignitaries. “So that you [scribes and Pharisees] may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins,” he said, turning to the bedridden man. and take your bed and go to your house.

Luke 5:25-26:

And immediately he rose up before them, and took what he was lying on, and went to his own house, and glorified God.

26 And they were all amazed, and glorified God, and were afraid, and said, We have seen strange things today.

A gift of healing is a sign of forgiveness for all who repent and believe. Forgiveness of sins and healing go hand in hand.

Psalm 41:4:

I said: Lord, have mercy on me, heal my soul; because I have sinned against you.

Psalm 103:2-3:

Bless the LORD, my soul, and do not forget all his blessings:

3 who forgives all your wrongdoings; who heals all your diseases;

What can we say about these things? Where the anointed Word of God is presented with power, love, and compassion, and where hearts turn to the Lord in repentance, the Lord’s power will be present to heal. The Bible proclaims this truth, and historical accounts of miraculous healings in revival tents and mission fields around the world confirm it. Praise, honor and glory to those who make such things possible. Praise the Lord!
