The Goes Wrong Show

BBC television comedy

The Goes Wrong Show is a British comedy series created by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields and produced for the BBC by Mischief Screen and Big Talk Productions in association with Lionsgate UK. The program features the ensemble members of the Mischief Theater Company reprising their roles as members of the fictional theater company, the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society, while conducting a “live” televised stage play that, due to errors, accidents and other problems affecting the hamper the company’s efforts. The concept was developed by Lewis, Sayer and Shields following two television Christmas specials for the BBC, with the series premiering on BBC One on 23 December 2019. In 2020, the group performed a second series, but under strict guidelines due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK, which aired on September 27, 2021.[8]

premise [ edit ]

The plot for each episode of the program focuses on the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society having the opportunity to conduct a play on live television in front of a live studio audience. As with the stage performances put on by Mischief Theater as a fictional theater company, all of the Cornley Group’s productions and events are prone to go awry due to prop and stage play problems, line errors, and problematic accidents. In some cases, the game goes wrong from the start due to a setup error.

Cast [edit]

Henry Shields as Chris Bean – the company’s fussy, long-suffering director who struggles to keep the play running smoothly.

Henry Lewis as Robert Grove – an actor who believes acting is about presence and volume. He constantly argues with Chris about starring in performances.

Jonathan Sayer as Dennis Tyde – an actor cast in small roles, including animals and inanimate objects, due to his inability to remember lines and his misinterpretation of stage directions and directions.

Dave Hearn as Max Bennett – an actor who is talented but tends to be an amateur at performing or stunts.

Charlie Russell as Sandra Wilkinson – an actress who tends to go over the top in her performances and is eager to impress her audience.

Bryony Corrigan as Vanessa Wilcock-Wynn-Carroway – an actress prone to frequent performance accidents and unable to cope with improvisation.

Nancy Zamit as Annie Twilloil – a member of the company who has been recruited as an actress against her will and is often assigned supporting roles that may not work out so well.

Chris Leask as Trevor Watson – the company’s stage manager who is responsible for sets and props and does his best not to be seen by the audience while fixing mistakes; although occasionally used as a supporting character when needed.

Greg Tannahill as Jonathan Harris – an actor who has trouble being noticed when performing, either because he can’t open the doors on set and therefore sometimes gets trapped, or his scenes get muddled by mishaps and accidents.

Ellie Morris as Lucy Grove – an actress who suffers from stage fright, anxiety and stress, largely due to her uncle Robert training her acting skills rigorously.

production [edit]

background [edit]

In 2016, the BBC offered the Mischief Theater the opportunity to produce a television adaptation of Peter Pan Goes Wrong, which aired in December 2016.[9] The following year, the network invited the company again to produce a new special titled A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong in December 2017.[10] Both specials proved popular with viewers and led to Mischief Theater being commissioned for a television series for BBC One. Company directors Shields and Sayer opted to use the same writers and cast for the series and developed the series as The Goes Wrong Show, which focused on the fictional theater company that the cast believed to be involved in performing various stage performances ][12] The six episodes were each given different themes for their play, including a historical romance and a spy thriller, and resulted in the production of six half-hour episodes. A second series was later commissioned, beginning with a Christmas special in 2020, followed by five episodes in 2021.[14]

Development [edit]

The Goes Wrong Show was announced by the BBC on February 22, 2019. The show was commissioned by Shane Allen, the BBC’s Controller for Comedy Commissioning, and Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content.[15] Following the success of the first series, the BBC commissioned a second series, which premiered on December 22, 2020. The first half hour episode was a retelling of the nativity scene story. In addition to the writers, the show also features regular Mischief cast members, including Charlie Russell, Bryony Corrigan, Dave Hearn, and Nancy Zamit.[18] In one of the episodes, the cast is filmed upside down.[19] The first series was recorded at Dock10 Studios in Salford, Greater Manchester.[20]

Reception [edit]

The first series received generally positive reviews. Huw Fullerton of the Radio Times said that “The Goes Wrong Show…is actually the Mischief Theater Company’s laugh-out-loud new project”.[21] Tim Dowling of The Guardian praised the show’s farce and the behind-the-scenes effort that went into making it work.[22] Liverpool Sound and Vision’s Ian D. Hall called A Trial To Watch “one of the best examples of farce to come onto television in years”. Another positive review for the opening episode came from Michael Hogan’s review in The Telegraph. He said, “This old-fashioned, family-friendly comedy walked the line between seasonal gaiety and dark humor with aplomb. It was like Mrs Brown’s Boys, but funny.”[24]

In reviewing the Christmas episode, Chortle’s Steve Bennett said, “While every flaw here is of course meticulously planned, they’re pulled off with enough flair, dedication, and the occasional ingenuity to have all but the most cynical viewers laughing.”[25] The show received a five-star rating from Suzi Feay of the Financial Times, who said, “This stuff has to be staged and performed with the utmost accuracy if it’s going to be successful. Luckily it’s perfect, intentional, awful.”[26 ] In a negative review, Lottie Young of the Evening Standard called the first episode “embarrassingly bad” and argued that “the formula of slapstick comedy is petrified rather than old-fashioned.”[27 ] Rupert Hawksley of i News said that “theater doesn’t always translate well to TV” and called the script “awful”.[28]

On April 3, 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, The Mischief Theater began following episodes of the show on Twitter (with the hashtag #GoesWrongAlong), beginning with “90 Degrees.” The watch-alongs began at 7 p.m.[29]
