However, concerns about safety and potential side effects have also been raised.

Apple cider vinegar is a natural tonic. It has several health benefits backed by scientific human studies.

Apple cider vinegar is made from acetic acid, which may contribute to weight loss and health benefits like lower blood sugar and healthier cholesterol levels.

Unfortunately, human studies supporting daily use of apple cider vinegar are lacking, and more research is needed (6).

Several animal and human studies have found that acetic acid and apple cider vinegar may promote fat burning and weight loss, lower blood sugar levels, increase insulin sensitivity, and improve cholesterol levels (2, 3, 4, 5).

In addition to acetic acid, vinegar contains water and traces of other acids, vitamins, and minerals (1).

Acetic acid makes up 5–6% of apple cider vinegar. It is classified as a “weak acid” but still has fairly strong acidic properties when concentrated.

The yeast converts the sugar in the apples into alcohol. Bacteria are then added to the mixture and ferment the alcohol into acetic acid (1).

Unfortunately, apple cider vinegar has been reported to cause some side effects.

This is especially true when consumed in large doses.

Although small amounts are generally fine and healthy, consuming too much can be harmful and even dangerous.

1. Delayed gastric emptying

Small human studies have shown that apple cider vinegar can decrease the rate at which food leaves the stomach and enters the lower digestive tract. This could slow down the absorption of nutrients into the bloodstream.

However, this effect can worsen the symptoms of gastroparesis, a common condition that affects people with diabetes.

In gastroparesis, the nerves in the stomach malfunction, causing food to sit in the stomach too long and not empty at a normal rate.

Symptoms of gastroparesis include heartburn, bloating, and nausea. For people who have both type 1 diabetes and gastroparesis, timing insulin with meals is very difficult because it is difficult to predict how long food will be digested and absorbed.

A controlled study examined 10 patients with type 1 diabetes and gastroparesis.

Drinking water with 2 tablespoons (30 mL) of apple cider vinegar increased the time food stayed in the stomach compared to drinking plain water ( 7Trusted Source ).

However, a controlled study suggests that in some cases, appetite and food intake may decrease due to indigestion.

People who consumed a drink with 25 grams (0.88 ounces) of apple cider vinegar reported less appetite but also significantly more nausea, especially when the vinegar was part of an unpleasant-tasting drink ( 10Trusted Source ).

Summary Apple cider vinegar can help reduce appetite, but it can also cause nausea, especially when consumed as part of an off-flavored beverage.

3. Low potassium levels and bone loss

There are currently no controlled studies on the effects of apple cider vinegar on blood potassium levels and bone health.

However, there is one case report of low blood potassium and bone loss that has been attributed to large doses of apple cider vinegar taken over a long period of time.

A 28-year-old woman consumed 8 ounces (250 ml) of apple cider vinegar diluted in water daily for 6 years.

She was hospitalized with low potassium levels and other blood chemistry abnormalities (11).

The woman has also been diagnosed with osteoporosis, a condition that causes brittle bones and is rare in young people.

Doctors who treated the woman believe the large daily doses of apple cider vinegar caused minerals to be leached from her bones to buffer the acidity of her blood.

They also found that high acidity can reduce the formation of new bone.

Of course, the amount of apple cider vinegar in this case was far more than most people would consume in a single day—plus, it did so every day for many years.

Summary There is one case report of low potassium levels and osteoporosis likely caused by drinking too much apple cider vinegar.

4. Erosion of tooth enamel

Acidic foods and drinks have been shown to damage tooth enamel (12).

Soft drinks and fruit juices have been studied more extensively, but some research shows that the acetic acid in vinegar can also damage tooth enamel.

In a laboratory study, wisdom teeth enamel was immersed in various vinegars with pH values ​​ranging from 2.7 to 3.95. The vinegars resulted in 1-20% mineral loss from the teeth after 4 hours (13).

Importantly, this study was conducted in a lab and not in the mouth, where saliva helps buffer acid — and a person wouldn’t keep vinegar in their mouth for 4 hours. Still, there is some evidence that large amounts of vinegar can cause tooth erosion.

A case study also concluded that a 15-year-old girl’s severe tooth decay was caused by consuming 1 cup (237 mL) of undiluted apple cider vinegar per day as a weight-loss aid (14).

6. Skin burns

Due to its highly acidic nature, apple cider vinegar can also cause burns when applied to the skin.

In one case, a 14-year-old girl developed erosions on her nose after applying several drops of apple cider vinegar to remove two birthmarks, based on a log she saw online (17).

In another case, a 6-year-old boy with multiple health problems developed leg burns after his mother treated his leg infection with apple cider vinegar (18).

There are also several anecdotal reports online of burns caused by applying apple cider vinegar to the skin.

Summary There have been reports of skin burns occurring in response to attempts to treat moles and infections with apple cider vinegar.

7. Drug Interactions

Some medications may interact with apple cider vinegar:

However, if you are taking medication to treat diabetes, you should consult a doctor before taking apple cider vinegar.

2. To keep you feeling full Apple cider vinegar is sometimes recommended as a weight loss aid. This is because it can help you feel full. Some short-term studies have shown that consuming apple cider vinegar can help you eat fewer calories, lose weight, and reduce belly fat if that’s your goal (10, 11). However, its long-term effects on weight loss are unknown and likely small unless a person also makes other diet and lifestyle changes (2).

3. Preserving food Like other types of vinegar, apple cider vinegar is an effective preservative. In fact, people have used vinegar as a pickling agent to preserve food for thousands of years. It works by making the food more acidic, which deactivates its enzymes and kills any bacteria that can cause spoilage. You can find many recipes online for preserving or pickling food with apple cider vinegar.

4. As a deodorant, apple cider vinegar is known to have antibacterial properties. For this reason, it is often claimed that apple cider vinegar can eliminate bad smells. There’s no research to back these claims, but you can try it by mixing 1 part apple cider vinegar with 1 part water to make a deodorant spray. This is a natural alternative to odor neutralizers. You can also mix the apple cider vinegar with water and Epsom salt to make a foot bath like this one. This can help get rid of unwanted foot odor by killing odor-causing bacteria.

5. How to Make a Salad Vinaigrette An easy way to use apple cider vinegar is to make a simple salad dressing like this one. Homemade salad dressings are much less processed than store-bought ones and are often tastier.

6. To Make an All-Purpose Cleaner Apple cider vinegar is often a popular choice for a natural alternative to commercial cleaning products. This is due to its antibacterial properties. Mix 1 cup of water with 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar and you have a natural all-purpose cleaner. However, it’s worth noting that while vinegars, including apple cider vinegar, can kill some bacteria, they’re not as effective at killing harmful bacteria as commercial cleaning products (12).

7. For a sore throat Gargling with apple cider vinegar is a popular home remedy for a sore throat. It’s anecdotally thought that its antibacterial properties might help kill the bacteria that could be causing a sore throat. However, there is no evidence to support its use in this way. If you try this at home, make sure to mix the vinegar with water before gargling. This is because apple cider vinegar is very acidic and has been known to cause throat burns when consumed undiluted (13, 14).

8. As a facial tonic Apple cider vinegar is anecdotally claimed to help soothe skin problems and promote graceful aging. Therefore, many people like to use apple cider vinegar to make a skin tonic. The general recipe is 1 part apple cider vinegar to 2 parts water. You can then apply this to your skin with a cotton pad. However, if you have sensitive skin, you may want to make a more dilute solution by adding more water. There isn’t enough research to prove the safety of using apple cider vinegar for this purpose.

9. To Catch Fruit Flies Fruit flies can be pests and it’s really easy to make a cheap fruit fly trap using apple cider vinegar. Just pour some apple cider vinegar into a mug, add a few drops of dish soap (to help catch flies sink) and you’re good to go.

10. Boil Better Eggs Adding vinegar to the water you use to boil or poach eggs can help you produce consistently good eggs. This is because the protein in egg whites solidifies faster when exposed to a more acidic liquid (15). When you poach eggs, you want the whites to set as quickly as possible so the eggs will hold their shape. Using vinegar when cooking eggs can also speed up the curdling or coagulation of the egg whites. This can be useful if the shell cracks while the egg is cooking.

11. As a Marinade Another way to use apple cider vinegar in cooking is to make a marinade. In fact, apple cider vinegar is a popular ingredient in many steak marinades. This is because it adds a nice sweet and sour flavor to the meat. Combine with wine, garlic, soy sauce, onions and cayenne pepper to add delicious flavor to your steak.

12. Wash fruits and vegetables Pesticide residues on fruits and vegetables can worry many people. This is why some people like to wash their fruits and vegetables in apple cider vinegar. The hope is that it removes more chemical residue than water alone. If you want to try it, add 1-2 cups of apple cider vinegar to your bath water and enjoy a soak in your tub. Be sure to dilute the vinegar sufficiently. A higher percentage of vinegar can irritate your skin.

15. As a hair conditioner An apple cider vinegar hair conditioner is designed to remove product build-up, detangle, and add shine to your hair. Mix 1 part apple cider vinegar with 1 part water and pour the mixture over your hair. Leave it on for a few minutes before washing it out. If you have sensitive skin, try this with a weaker dilution first as the vinegar is quite acidic.

To make your own toothbrush cleaner, mix 1/2 cup (120 mL) of water with 2 tablespoons (30 mL) of apple cider vinegar and 2 teaspoons of baking soda. Mix everything well and then leave the head of your toothbrush in the mixture for 30 minutes. Make sure you rinse your brush well with water before using it. Otherwise, the acidity of undiluted vinegar could damage your teeth.

24. For Treating Acne Dabbing small amounts of diluted apple cider vinegar on pimples has been anecdotally cited as a good way to get rid of them. However, undiluted apple cider vinegar is highly acidic, and applying it directly to the skin can cause burns (22, 23).

25. To get rid of warts As with acne, apple cider vinegar is said to be a natural way to get rid of warts. Due to its acidic nature, it is likely effective in removing warts from the skin. Note, however, that this method is very painful and some people who have tried it have required local anesthesia (24, 25).

Yes, you can actually make vinegar. I know it sounds wild, but it’s honestly a piece of (apple) pie!

Homemade Apple Cider Vinegar:

I’ve been making my own apple cider vinegar for over five years. It’s so easy and so cheap. There are different ways you can do this. You can use a whole apple that has been chopped and sliced, or you can use the skins and seeds!

I personally prefer to use the skins and seeds because it’s a great way to use up food that would otherwise end up in the compost.

You can use any type of apple – you could even use a different fruit entirely. You can make a pear cider vinegar, pineapple, persimmon, fig or anything your heart desires.

Depending on the sugar content of the fruit, you might just need to add a little more to your appetizer.

Do you have to use sugar when making apple cider vinegar?

Sugar is a very important part of the fermentation process. One of the comments on my Instagram post explained the process so well I’ll quote you. “To make vinegar you first have to make an alcohol – so the sugar is there for the yeasts on the apple seeds to consume it to make a cider, and then bacteria convert that alcohol into acetic acid, making a vinegar.

“Technically, you could do it without sugar, but you would need to make the sugar in the apples much more accessible (probably through juicing) so the yeast can colonize your solution faster than mold spores. I tried using honey to make a batch of apple cider vinegar and it didn’t go particularly well. I’ve heard it’s possible, but it’s a much longer process. It works so much better with the sugar, so even if you’re a very low-sugar household like we are, it’s worth getting some!

Good news, your vinegar pretty much lasts forever! It’s a fermented product, and the “expiry date” on most vinegars you buy in the store is completely arbitrary. According to the vinegar institute. “Because of its acidic nature, vinegar is self-preserving and doesn’t need to be refrigerated.”

can I speed up the process?

Ok, so this is my FAVORITE vinegar hack. Whether you got homemade apple cider vinegar from Mom or something else you bought from the store, you can create a never-ending vinegar fountain.

If your vinegar is in a jar with a small opening, transfer it to a slightly larger one. It will help it ferment a little faster.

Fill the jar with half the apple cider vinegar with the nut and the other half with water. Place a small piece of cloth over the lid with a rubber band, and in about a week or two you’ll have a full bottle of ACV. It is really that easy!

Additional Notes: I keep the bottle as you see below with the fabric swatch on top and keep the vinegar flowing constantly and my bottle has been running strong since 2017.

With its many uses, it can be difficult to know how much apple cider vinegar to take each day.
