Tinder profile icons

Text prediction is now permanently enabled in iOS 10, but it’s smarter. Predictive text used to only suggest words you just typed or words that might follow the word you just typed. Now it also suggests richer information. For example, if I type “George’s phone number is,” predictive text will look for “George” in my Contacts app and suggest phone numbers. I can quickly tap one of the suggestions instead of trying to type or copy and paste a long phone number.

Tap Back, Handwriting, Emoji Suggestions

Other new features let you graphically respond to someone’s message, just like you “like” or “love” a Facebook post. Tap on the message you received and six options will appear above it: heart, thumbs up, thumbs down, “ha ha”, double exclamation marks and a question mark. You can also write a text message by hand (turn the phone sideways for auto-rotate when the lock is off) or choose pre-written notes that look like handwriting.

Now when you pull up your emjoi board, Messages will highlight words you’ve already typed if it thinks there’s a suitable emoji replacement for them.

Pros and cons of iMessage

Squeezing all these new options into the Messages app has certainly made it clunkier. There are clearly some early issues as well. As mentioned, I couldn’t get the special effects to work at all on an iPhone 5c. And Digital Touch messages are sent before they give you a chance to make sure they’re right.

Another constant problem I have with iMessage is that you can associate multiple identifiers with your iMessage account, and depending on which identifier someone is using, this can result in you receiving a message late or not at all. For example, my iMessage account is tied to a phone number that’s temporarily banned (I use it when I travel every few months), a second phone number, and the same email address I use for my Apple ID. When friends try to message me from my blocked phone number because it’s in their address book, I don’t see the message until the number is reactivated. In the meantime, my friend does not receive any feedback or error message. So Messages isn’t a great app if you’ve ever changed your phone number.

My sister, who also uses iMessage, only has her phone number linked to the Messages app on her phone, but her email address is linked to the app she uses on her laptop. If I accidentally address a message to her email address instead of her phone number, she won’t see my messages until she opens her computer and starts Messages there. But when I look at my contacts list, all I can say is that she uses iMessage. I don’t have any details on what ID to use.

Another benefit of iMessage is read receipts, which you can turn off. Read receipts let you know that the recipient has opened your message. WhatsApp does the same.

One benefit of iMessage that I’ve glossed over is that you can use it on a Mac. You are not limited to using it on your phone. WeChat also has desktop apps. You can access your Facebook Messenger chats from Facebook.com or Messenger.com (although you can’t see any messages if you go to Facebook.com in a mobile browser, which I find infinitely annoying).

Alternative messaging apps

Some other messaging apps have a similar problem as iMessage regarding IDs. With multiple apps, your account is bound to your phone number. WhatsApp, Viber, and Telegram all require you to authenticate the app with a phone number, and that phone number must be the same phone number as the device you’re holding.

However, I have two phones. So I ended up with two installations of WhatsApp not syncing with each other. It makes it difficult to remember which phone I need to have conversations with different friends.

This is not the case with other apps. With Facebook Messenger, for example, if you’re friends on Facebook, people can easily find you on the app, and adding a phone number is entirely optional. Wickr also makes it optional to add an email address and phone number. By default you are only visible with the ID you create on this platform.

I asked about preferred messaging apps via a Twitter poll, and a few people who voted “Other” told me their favorites were Snapchat or Twitter, which I found unusual because while both services have a direct messaging feature, I don’t think of either of them as messaging apps per se. I see them both more as social networking apps and therefore think differently about their content and the meaning of it.

At least one person also called on Slack, a platform built for “teams” but will sometimes step in for messages among friends, as long as you can convince people to join your team. Slack requires you to first sign in to a specific team account every time you use the app. Having too many accounts is a real headache. The beauty of Slack, however, is that it gives you the ability to heed or ignore messages at your discretion. Slack is all about notifications that you can really customize. So if there’s a group chat about something you’re only marginally interested in, you can mute those notifications. If there are important keywords, you can set up an alert to notify you every time those keywords are used.

From the perspective of how easy it is to find and add friends, Facebook Messenger remains one of the best apps. I personally don’t like it and refuse to install it on my phone except for testing purposes because it collects so much information. But at least once a week someone I know (usually an acquaintance) texts me on Facebook. It reminds me that my phone number is listed in the White Pages.

The new messages offer some fun features to explore, even if they’re not super smooth yet. Just remember that it’s not the only messaging app for iPhone and there are other ways to reach people that might be better for you and your friends.

Apple introduced a lot of new social features in Messages for iPhone and iPad in iOS 10, and some of them can make a Valentine’s Day message more original and personal. Handwritten notes, Digital Touch kisses and heartbeats, and the love screen effect are all adorable ways to give your messages a little more care than usual. Here’s how:

iOS 10 is required for digital touch and handwriting in messages on iPhone and iPad, and iOS 10.2 is required for love screen effect, so you need to have the latest software updates for everything to work. Below we look at how this works on iPhone and the steps are very similar on iPad as well.

First, create a new iMessage with or reply to the person you want to message. In the conversations view, you’ll find a boxed icon with a white arrow inside it, showing the camera shortcut, Digital Touch, and the iMessage app drawer.

The middle option, with the heart and two fingers, is the Digital Touch option, which lets you send virtual kisses, your heartbeat, and ephemeral sketches. In the center of this screen is a solid black box that you can tap with various finger gestures and sketch disappearing messages. You can expand the space by tapping the up arrow at the bottom right.

When you tap the up arrow to expand the interface, Digital Touch also displays a detailed explanation sheet, telling you which gestures perform which actions. For example, you can send a kiss animation when you tap the surface with two fingers. Sending a heartbeat is done by tapping and holding with two fingers. These animated messages then disappear after they’re sent and viewed, unless one of the users taps the “Keep” button to save them.

If you’re wearing an Apple Watch, the speed of your heartbeat will also vary based on your most recent heart rate reading, so keep that in mind. You can also send quick sketches with Digital Touch, which allows you to be more creative with color and design.

Simply slide your finger over the surface to be drawn. You can change the colors using the color picker to the left above the camera icon. Each drawing can also contain multiple colors.

Digital Touch Sketches contain color and will disappear after viewing if not kept. You can send handwritten messages if you prefer to write in black ink and the message will be preserved by default. Both methods animate the message to the recipient as you drew it.

Rotate iPhone to landscape to reveal the sketch key in the lower-right corner of the keyboard. You may automatically see the handwriting interface (in which case you can tap the keyboard icon in the lower-right corner to toggle between modes). From here, just finger write what you want to say and tap Done to save it for sending.

Just tap the blue circle with the white arrow to send your handwritten message to the recipient, or you can optionally add a love screen effect here if you’re back in portrait mode. Screen effects can be applied to regular messages with text or even messages with stickers or handwritten notes.

Long press or firm press (on newer iPhones) to access the Send with Effect menu, then tap the Screen option at the top. Balloons are the first option. Swipe twice to access the love effect, then tap the blue send button to share your message with the animating reflective heart balloon.

Handwritten notes can be particularly impressive when created with Apple Pencil on iPad, but a quick sketched note with your finger on your iPhone can also be charming.

Use this code to add people to your circle.

After setting up a circle, you should be able to see all members on the featured map. If they use a profile picture, you will see it on their map location. Now tap on any of your children’s icons and use the menu to select the school they attend. The app will then notify you every time your child leaves or enters school.
