How do you know if your CV axle is worn out and needs replacing? There are 5 common ways to determine if you need a new axle.

1. You hear popping or clicking noises when turning.

– To check this, put the ATV in reverse, then turn the handlebars all the way in one direction, then drive in a circle. If the noise gets louder, it’s time to replace the axle.

2. You hear and/or feel a knock when accelerating, decelerating, or when shifting the transmission into any gear.

– To check this, put the car in reverse and back up, vary the speed up and down. If the noise gets louder or more pronounced, it’s time to replace the axle.

3. A buzzing or buzzing noise

– This is usually more the sound of a bad wheel bearing, but can also be a sign of low grease in one or both CV joints. A crack in the CV boot is usually the cause of insufficient lubrication.

4. You feel a vibration when you accelerate.

-This can be caused by play in the inner or outer joints, but it is usually a worn inner joint.

5. A vibration that increases with speed.

– This symptom is not usually due to a worn CV axle, but is usually caused by an unbalanced tire or a bent wheel.

Paul,

I believe the steps listed above should work for your machine. Especially if your service manual dictates using a slide hammer to remove an axle from the differential. The only manual I have for a 650 is an electronic version and it only includes the one procedure of removing the axle with a slide hammer.

If you just pull straight out (without pushing it in first) you won’t have much luck pulling it out unless the locking ring is missing. So slide the axle IN towards the differential as far as it will go (this will move the CV all the way against the back of its case) and pull it OUT quickly. Repeat if necessary, but usually takes 2 to 3 moves. Like I said, I prefer to put my feet on the differential case when I’m pulling, it gives me a little more leverage.

I have a pdf file with instructions on how to remove the axle (with their expensive tool). If you need them, PM me an email address.

Hope that helps
